Delhi reported its first Covid case on March 07, 2020. It reported its first fatality on March 13, 2020.&nbsp;

According to COVID-19 official bulletin figures released by Delhi's health department on Monday, around 2.07 million people have been infected since March 2020.&nbsp;

The data also showed that in the last 34 months, over 26,000 Delhi residents have died due to the infection.&nbsp;

For the first time in 1,027 days, Delhi registers no new Covid cases; no new fatality reported

Delhi is most likely to report around 10,000 new Covid cases today, taking the daily positive surge to nearly 10 per cent, state health minister Satyendar Jain on Wednesday said, while announcing the arrival of third wave in India.

On Tuesday, Delhi had recorded 5,481 news infections and three deaths in a day. The positivity rate stood at 8.3 per cent, a significant increase from 6.46 per cent on Monday.

“For Delhi, it is the fifth wave,” Jain said, adding, “Coronavirus is spreading very fast. The good news is that no serious cases have been found. We are also fully prepared to vaccinate teens.”

Testing for COVID-19 has been increased and around 90,000 tests have been conducted on Tuesday, the minister said.

He, however, added that only 300-400 samples are being sent for genome sequencing now as sequencing of all samples is not possible.

Anticipating explosion of cases, Delhi civic authorities had already announced weekend curfew in the national capital.

‘Fifth wave in Delhi’: State health minister says 10,000 new Covid cases expected today

India detected 37,379 new coronavirus cases and 124 more fatalities in the span of 24 hours, the most Covid cases since September, according to the Union health ministry's data updated on Tuesday.

The Omicron tally too saw a jump, as 1,892 cases were reported across 23 states and Union Territories so far. Of those cases, 766 have recovered or migrated, the health ministry said.

Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 568 cases, followed by Delhi (382), Kerala (185), Rajasthan (174), Gujarat (152), and Tamil Nadu (121).

With Tuesday’s figures, India’s active cases have now increased to 1,71,830 and the country’s Covid tally rose to 3,49,60,261, according to the data.

The active cases comprise 0.49 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.13 per cent, the health ministry said.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 3.24 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 2.05 per cent, according to the health ministry.

The Council, acting on the recommendation of a group of ministers from different states, cut to nil GST on COVID-19 drug Tocilizumab and black fungus medicine Amphotericin B, from existing 5 per cent. A 5 per cent GST levy on vaccines will continue which will allow manufacturers to get benefit of settling taxes paid on inputs.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained that the 5 per cent levy will not put any additional burden on common man as the government was procuring all vaccines and giving them to citizens for free.

The reduced tax rates were based on a recommendation of a group of ministers, headed by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, and would remain effective till September 30, 2021.

"It was felt that the GoM's recommendations has brought in a lot of substantial change. Many items, that were at 18 per cent and 12 per cent, brought down to 5 per cent. So there was a lot of substance in the recommendation made by GoM. The Council largely agreed to go with GoM's recommendation...," Sitharaman said while briefing reporters after the 44th GST Council meeting here.

The notification of lower GST rates would be issued "tomorrow or day after".

While GST on Tocilizumab and Amphotericin B is slashed to nil from 5 per cent, the rate on Remdesivir and anticoagulants like Heparin is lowered from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. GST rate on ambulance has been cut to 12 per cent from 28 per cent.

Tax on medical grade oxygen, oxygen concentrator (including personal imports), ventilators, BiPAP machines and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) devices has been cut to 5 per cent from 12 per cent.

Also, tax on Covid testing kits, pulse oximeter (including personal imports) has been brought down to 5 per cent from 12 per cent. Hand sanitisers, temperature check equipment, gas/electric furnaces for crematoriums too will attract lower 5 per cent tax, compared to 18 per cent earlier.

In the previous meeting of the GST Council on May 28, taxes on COVID-19 vaccines and medical supplies were left unchanged after the BJP&nbsp;and Opposition ruled states sparred over whether the tax cut benefits will reach the common man.

An 8-member GoM, under Sangma, was set up to recommend GST rate on Covid essentials.

The other members of the GoM are Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitinbhai Patel, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Goa Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, Finance ministers of Kerala (K N Balagopal), Odisha (Niranjan Pujari), Telangana (T Harish Rao) and UP (Suresh Kr Khanna).

To a query on Congress saying that they were not made part of the GoM, Sitharaman said, "... I don't want to comment on what was said outside. In the Council, the three Congress ministers said that in the future at least you should consider having us in GoM. The selection into a GoM is never made on party basis, neither is the exclusion. There are several GoMs and several ministers are made members of the GoM. All states are given representation in one or the other GoM. Neither the inclusion, nor the exclusions happen on political party affiliations."

Industry chamber PHDCCI said the calibrated reduction in the rates of GST on Covid relief essentials will go a long way in treating Covid cases and to provide required relief for treatment of infections.

"PHDCCI looks forward to the continued reform measures by the government to mitigate the daunting impact of Covid on people and to make India free from the pandemic," it said in a statement.

Shrivastava said this while reviewing the enforcement of lockdown and action taken against hoarding/black marketing of medicines/oxygen gas cylinders during a virtual meeting at the Vimarsh conference hall, Police Headquarters today.

"District Delhi Commissioners were instructed to activate a robust human intelligence mechanism with the deployment of decoy customer in order to unearth the entire chain," read a press release by the Delhi Police.

It was also emphasised to sensitise cyber cells to check the online frauds reportedly being committed in the name of arranging oxygen, medicines, and medical equipment.

It should also be ensured that AYUSH kits and other safety material meant for staff should reach till the last field functionary.

"Vulnerable persons viz. employees of the age of 50 years or above, employees suffering from hypertension, blood pressure, heart or lung disease, cancer and other chronic disease are at high risk of developing a serious illness, they shall not be exposed to any front-line work requiring direct contact with the public," said the statement.

Britain 
UK announced it will send 600 pieces, which include ventilators and oxygen concentrator devices, to India. The first batch will reach on Tuesday morning. Nine airline container loads of supplies, including 495 oxygen concentrators, which can extract oxygen from the air, 120 non-invasive ventilators, and 20 manual ventilators will reach India this week. UK prime minister, foreign and health secretaries, and ambassador made public comments in solidarity with the people of India. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said,“We stand side by side with India as a friend and partner during what is a deeply concerning time in the fight against Covid-19."

United States

The US has agreed to provide the specific raw materials for Indian Covishield vaccine manufacturers. The development comes after the Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and American National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke to each other.

US will be supplying therapeutics, rapid diagnostic test kits, ventilators, PPE kits, oxygen generators, and deploy an expert team of health advisors from CDC and USAID.

Already, more than 300 O2 concentrators have been brought by Air India from New York. Tweets by the US president, vice president, defence secretary, &nbsp;surgeon general, deputy secretary of the state showed support for India.

The French presidency has said that the country will provide India "significant" oxygen support and is working on the delivery of high-performance oxygen generator units as well as some other equipment.&nbsp;President Emmanuel Macron was the first world leader to send a message of public solidarity. Cooperation between German top medical institute Robert Koch Institute (RKI) with Indian institutions to support&nbsp; sequencing of viral loads is on the anvil. Armed Forces Medical Services or AFMS will be importing 23 mobile oxygen generation plants from Germany. These plants will be deployed in AFMS hospitals catering to Covid patients. From Germany, containers are also being imported.

Saudi Arabia 
80 metric tonnes of oxygen have been procured from the country in cooperation with Adani and Linde and the Indian high commission.

China 
The country has offered to provide assistance. A Chinese embassy spokesperson in Delhi told WION that "talks and discussions are ongoing" with the Indian side.

Hong Kong 
800 oxygen concentrators were airlifted for SpiceHealth, a healthcare company founded by the promoters of SpiceJet.

Pakistan 
Has offered to provide relief support to India including ventilators, Bi PAP, digital X-ray machines, PPEs and related items. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister SM Qureshi extended support to India.&nbsp;The country's well-known NGO Edhi Foundation has written to PM Modi and has offered to send ambulances. Spontaneous support by Pakistani society, especially on social media, was seen with a lot of positive trends.

Iran 
Iran Health Minister Dr Saeed Namaki wrote to the Indian Health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, saying, "The government and people of Iran are ready to spare no technical assistance, expertise and equipment in these difficult days and at the height of the plight of the dear citizens of India with the COVID-19 epidemic."

Japan 
Under its grant assistance, oxygen generators will be provided with a procurement process still underway. Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga for providing assistance to India for combating the pandemic during a call on Monday.

Russia 
Support has been offered by Russia. It is cosidering sending the drug Remdesivir to India for Covid patients.Australia

International community extends support to India amid Covid crisis

India's health ministry data on Thursday showed a steep spike in daily number of coronavirus cases. More than 314,000 COVID-19 cases were recorded in just 24 hours. This has brought the total number of cases to 15,930,965.

At 314,835, the number of new cases is highest ever recorded in any country.

The death toll has increased to 184,657 with a record 2,104 new fatalities.

Number of active COVID-19 cases has increased to 229,1428, according to the ministry.

In an alarming development, the national recovery rate has dropped to 84.46 per cent. But fatality rate has dropped to 1.16 per cent.

India's new daily Covid cases top 300,000, highest in the world

Paying "tributes" to India, Vietnam's ambassador the country&nbsp;Pham Sanh Chau recieved&nbsp;the first dose of Indian vaccine Covaxin. Covaxin is made by Bharat Biotech, headquartered in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad. The envoy got vaccinated at Delhi's Dr Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.

Speaking to WION after getting the first jab, Chau said, "I took the decision to come to a government hospital to take my first jab of Covaxin vaccine. Why I decided to take Covaxin, because I believe that Covaxin is a very good vaccine and it will be safer."

He added, "I am here for more than two years, and it's time for me to pay tribute to this great country of India and its people. Also, acknowledge the contribution of Indian scientists to the noble cause of vaccinating the whole world".

The Vietnamese envoy joins other envoys in getting vaccinated. Earlier this month, Australian envoy&nbsp;Barry O’Farrell got vaccinated using Covisheild&nbsp;vaccine.
