Raising serious concerns over the harsh impact of mobile video game addiction and its ramifications on the children and youth of the country, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court initiated a suo motu Public Interest Litigation to regulate such games. Responses of the Government of India, Government of Tamil Nadu and social media platforms were sought in this regard.

Justices Mahadevan and Sathya Narayana Prasad mentioned how certain video games and mobile apps were widely available for use, despite the ban imposed on them (various apps and games of Chinese-origin). Specifically naming 'PUBG' and 'GarenaFreeFire', the judges said that it was causing addiction and having an adverse impact on the health of youngsters. They added that addiction to games led to youth quarrelling with their kin and even ending their own lives.

It was added that educational institutions must conduct awareness programmes to dissuade students from accessing and playing games that are banned by the government. Two men from Australia were arrested in Sydney for bribing Sri Lankan officials in order to win infrastructure contracts worth 14 million dollars.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) arrested the men, aged 67 and 71, last month after a decade-long investigation spanning several countries.

It is said that the men bribed more than AUD 304,000 ($190,000) to government officials between 2009 and 2016.

The men, aged 67 and 71, worked for a company which has been accused of misconduct in South Asian countries. They will face the court on Tuesday, reports BBC.

The AFP officials added that more arrests and charges are in the offing.

“Corruption undermines fair competition and can have disastrous consequences for developing economies, global anti-poverty and development efforts,” AFP Detective Superintendent Helen Schneider said in a statement.

“The AFP works to fight bribery and corruption both here and overseas to support ethical business practices, national security and the rule of law,” she added.

The AFP’s move follows decades-long investigation into an Australian-based engineering firm, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) International Pvt Ltd, which involved officials from the US, Canada, India and other countries.

The AFP was assisted from police across South Asia and the FBI.

According to the Sunday Morning Herald, the probe started in September 2013 after World Bank investigators found that SMEC was engaged in suspected “fraud and corruption” regarding a power plant project in Bangladesh in 2007. A year later, the police raided the firm’s Australian headquarters.

SMEC and its and four subsidiaries in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were later barred by the World Bank temporarily in 2017 from bidding for any of its contracts.

SMEC, originally known as Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation, was formed in 1949 to build an iconic Australian infrastructure project.

It was privatised in 1993 and has since then become a global engineering giant with 5,400 staff in dozens of countries.

According to details that emerged after the conviction, Najib's attorneys claimed on Monday that Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali, the trial judge who presided over the SRC International trial, had a conflict of interest because he had been associated with a bank that did business with 1Malaysia Development Berhad. A division of 1MDB is SRC.

The five-member panel, led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, came to a unanimous conclusion on Tuesday, concluding that there had been "no miscarriage of justice" and that the court had been unable to identify any connection that would have created "a serious threat of prejudice."

Tengku Maimun read from the 20-page decision that the judges had concluded that "the entirety of the additional evidence sought to be introduced... is, in our view, irrelevant to the charges preferred against the applicant and fails to disclose any conflict of interest on the part of Justice Nazlan."

The highest court concluded after more than two hours of debate that Nazlan's function and involvement in the bank were not a secret because the facts might have been learned or obtained if the defence had exercised "due diligence."

Tengku Maimun declared, "All motions... are thus dismissed," requiring Najib's legal team to move forward with his last appeal. On Thursday, the hearing will continue.

Najib, 69, expressed his amazement and disappointment by the court's ruling.

Extension appeal is rejected

The court also rejected the defense's request for a postponement when Najib's lead attorney, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, pleaded with the judges for additional time to prepare for the trial because the new legal team had only been established at the end of the previous month.

"The document bundles total 179. This case is not typical. Additionally, the law has strong points. Hisyam requested a three to four-month extension and warned that "serious arguments will be raised."

However, since Najib was informed of the hearing date beforehand, Justice Tengku Maimun stated that the court determined that the motion and the reasons for the delay "are neither cogent nor reasonable."

Final plea

The Federal Court set aside August 15–19 and August 23–26 to hear Najib's plea, in which his attorneys listed 94 justifications for why the verdict should be overturned. In July 2018, Najib was charged. He was found guilty of seven crimes, including misuse of authority, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering, involving 42 million ringgit ($9.4 million) in SRC International funds discovered in his bank accounts after a two-year trial. A court in Indian capital New Delhi on Friday granted bail to Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair. He was arrested in a case related to his alleged objectionable tweet in 2018 on a Hindu deity. While granting bail the court observed that "the voice of dissent is necessary for a healthy democracy".

The court noted that till Friday (July 15), the police have failed to establish the identity of a said Twitter user who felt offended by the tweet of the accused and based on whose complaint the present case was filed

In spite of the bail however, Zubair will remain in jail as he has been remanded to judicial custody in some FIRs. These FIRs are registered against him by UP Police for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Zubair will be sent to the concerned jail in Uttar Pradesh after his release, according to a Tihar jail official in Delhi. The journalist is currently lodged in Tihar jail since July 2.

While granting bail, Additional Sessions Judge Devender Kumar Jangala said Indian democracy and the political parties are open for their criticism and that merely criticism of any political parties is no ground to invoke section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 295A (outraging religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC).

"Undoubtedly free speech is the proper foundation of a democratic society."

Further, the court said that Hindu religion, one of the oldest in the world was most tolerant.

Six separate FIRs have been lodged against Zubair in Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar and Hathras districts in UP.

The court has directed Zubair to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety of like amount. He has been directed not to leave the country without prior permission from the court. The journalist was also ordered to ensure that his tweet or retweet, or any material on social media content is not even touching boundaries of the offence punishable under Section 153A and 295A of IPC.

The court said that there was no need for any custodial interrogation and the alleged act would come into the category of offence only when it is done with a guilty intention.

"Be it any company, in any sector, they should abide by the laws of India," IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated.

On the basis that the content blocking orders from the IT Ministry do not meet "the test of the grounds provided under Section 69A of the IT Act," Twitter had earlier in the day filed a petition with the Karnataka High Court to challenge the Indian government's order to remove some content from its platform.

In its writ petition, Twitter claimed that various accounts and pieces of content that were subject to the blocking orders were either "overbroad and arbitrary," failed to notify the "originators" of the content, or were "disproportionate" in a number of instances.

The IT Ministry had threatened Twitter with harsh consequences in a letter from June if it disregarded some requests for content removal.

Twitter has now asked the court to overturn these blocking orders in order to obtain judicial review of some of the content that is included in them.

In India, Twitter has more than 24 million users. Its effort to obtain a judicial review of the content that is in question is seen as a part of its conflict with the government. Government requests for Twitter to remove content have mostly been ignored.

In the event that Twitter executives lose their legal protection, they may face fines and sentences of up to seven years in prison for user-caused IT law violations. In response, Twitter filed legal challenges to several of the restraining orders.

New IT regulations mean that social media networks are now held more liable for user-generated content. Additionally, they require the appointment of Indian grievance and compliance officers and work with law enforcement organisations to remove content.

'Comply with our laws and rules,' says Indian gov after Twitter goes to court

In a courtroom in Ohio, the father of a young murder victim lost control and repeatedly sucker-punched the suspect in the death of his son. According to reports, Nyteisha Lattimore, 29, was fatally stabbed by 22-year-old Desean Brown, who is also accused of throwing her 3-year-old son, Nylo, into the Ohio River while he was still alive.

If found guilty, he might have received the death penalty, but Antonio Hughes, the boy's biological father, was eager to exact his own brand of justice. Hughes can be seen sitting in the back row of the Hamilton County courthouse in a video obtained by Fox 19. He then sneaks up to the defence table from behind and strikes Brown in the jaw with a right hook.

Two sheriff's deputies rushed to stop the irate father and tackled him to the ground as he continued to beat Brown.

Hitachi-LG Data Storage was fined 37 million euros. Other sanctioned companies were Sony, Sony Optiarc which is a joint venture between Sony and NEC, and Quanta Storage. Philips avoided a fine as it alerted the cartel to the European Union competition enforcer.

The Commission said the collusion concerned optical disk drives for laptops and desktops produced by Dell and Hewlett Packard.

The General Court in 2019 agreed with the Commission's finding of a cartel and threw out the companies' challenge.

A man in Australia has been barred from seeing his children because he has a fetish for wearing adult diapers.

The ruling was ordered by the Family Court of Australia after his ex-wife refused to share the custody of their kids with the man, who has not been named by the authorities.

Justice Hilary Hannan from the Family Court ruled that the children of a man who has a fetish for wearing nappies could be psychologically damaged if exposed to their father’s lifestyle, The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported.

Justice Hannan said, "I have great reservations and ultimately do not accept that the father has an authentic willingness or capacity to disavow engaging in the behaviours in question and in his connections to the community."

She went on to say that it was inevitable that the man's children would be exposed to his fetish, which she claimed would badly affect them.

His ex-wife had decided to get separated after she came to know about his weird lifestyle. They met in the mid-2000s.

The woman had agreed to share the custody with the man, provided that he would keep his fetish away from the children.

A former Philadelphia police officer has been charged with first-degree murder after he fatally shot a 12-year-old boy back in March this year. District Attorney Larry Krasner said on Monday that the boy was unarmed and, on the ground, but the police offer still shot him which resulted in the boy’s death.

According to the judgement, the 12-year-old Thomas “TJ” Siderio and a 17-year-old identified as “NK” came across four officers in an unmarked police car. It is likely that “TJ” was the first person to fire a bullet towards the car and that resulted in officer Edsaul Mendoza chasing the two youngsters.

After a foot chase, Mendoza caught up with TJ and although he threw away his gun, the officer went ahead of shot him three times. Immediately afterward, Mendoza directed another officer to the spot where the boy had thrown the gun, which was found 40 feet away, the DA said according to CNN.

"Thus, when Officer Mendoza fired the third and fatal shot, he knew the 12-year-old, 5-foot tall, 111-pound Thomas Siderio no longer had a gun and no ability to harm him," Krasner said.

According to the CNN report, Mendoza was charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use it criminally.

Mendoza was relieved from his duties around two months after the incident as Police Commissioner Danielle M. Outlaw found him in violation of the use of force policy followed by the department.

The judge said he accepted the mitigating factors such as Gosling being "genuinely remorseful" for his actions after turning himself in to the authorities, his guilty plea and his voluntary compensation payment to the victims' family.

Gosling's lawyers had said alcohol may have impaired his judgement, citing a psychiatric report, and argued that his act is unlikely to be religiously motivated. They added he intends to appeal the sentence.

The prison sentence will commence retroactively from August 2019, when Gosling was taken into custody.

Singapore sentences Australian for hurling bottle, killing man in 'act of religious hostility toward Muslims'

After over two decades, Kyrgyzstan has taken full control of Kumtor Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines in Central Asia.

The goldmine was at the heart of the battle between the Kyrgyzstan government and Canadian mining company Centerra Gold. The mine is the 2nd highest in the world, behind Peru's Yanacocha mines.

President Sadyr Japarov, in an address to the nation earlier this month, said, "We have just signed an agreement with Centerra to resolve this dispute...Kumtor is now owned completely by Kyrgyzstan.”

The mine will now come under the direct control of Kyrgystan’s state-owned Kyrgyzaltyn after an out off-court settlement with Centerra.

Now, with full control of the mine, the Central Asian Country is expected to get $53 million even as the Canadian company ends all litigation against Kyrgyzaltyn in the United States, Sweden and Canada.

The mine is valued at US $3 billion. Over the next 10 years, according to Kyrgyz estimates, the mines can produce 160-200 tons of gold worth nearly at least US$5 billion dollars.

Highlighting the significance of the development, President Sadyr explained, "It is no exaggeration to say that today is a true turning point in the history of our country. Today, our people have taken responsibility for their fate into their own hands".

He added, "Our national assets are now exactly where they should be – in our own hands. This proves that we are on the path of sustainable development and growth."

Notably, the Kyrgyz foreign ministry had invited foreign envoys to visit the mines last year. These included envoys of India, UK, representatives from the embassies of Azerbaijan and delegates from the United Nations Resident Coordinator, UN FAO, UNDP.

The visit took place a month after Kyrgyzstan had taken over the mine from Canada's Centerra.

The Kumtor gold deposit is located at the Tien Shan Metallogenic Belt, also known as the Asian Gold belt that stretches from Uzbekistan to China's Xinjiang.

The goldmine was at the heart of the battle between the Kyrgyzstan government and Canadian mining company Centerra Gold. The mine is the 2nd highest in the world, behind Peru's Yanacocha mines. President Sadyr Japarov, in an address to the nation earlier this month, said, "We have just signed an agreement with Centerra to resolve this dispute...Kumtor is now owned completely by Kyrgyzstan.” The mine will now come under the direct control of Kyrgystan’s state-owned Kyrgyzaltyn after an out off-court settlement with Centerra. This proves that we are on the path of sustainable development and growth." Notably, the Kyrgyz foreign ministry had invited foreign envoys to visit the mines last year.

An Indonesian court on Monday sentenced a teacher to death for raping 13 girls at an Islamic school, upholding the prosecutor’s plea for death penalty.

The case of Herry Wirawan has stunned Indonesia and has drawn attention to the need to protect children from sexual violence in religious boarding schools.

Wirawan was initially sentenced to life in prison. However, the prosecutor who had requested the death penalty filed an appeal after Wirawan was sentenced to life in prison by court in Bandung in February.

The judge in a statement on Monday said that the defendant will now be punished with the death penalty. Herry’s lawyer, Ira Mambo, declined to comment on whether an appeal would be filed, citing the need to see the full court judgement.

During the February trial, it was revealed that Herry sexually abused 13 girls between the years 2016 and 2021, his victims were between the ages of 12 to 16 and eight of them fell pregnant following the rape.

The uncle of one of Herry's victims, Hidmat Dijaya said that "we initially wanted punishments of life in prison and chemical castration so that he would feel the pain from his crime", but that they feel "the death sentence represents justice."

The rape case in Bandung has also brought attention to the issue of sexual abuse in Indonesian schools, with 14 of the 18 incidents reported to the Child Protection Commission last year occurring in Islamic boarding schools.

Officials in Indonesia, including the country’s child protection minister, have backed calls for the death sentence, despite the fact that the country’s human rights commission thinks the declared death penalty is not appropriate.

As per Grant’s lawsuit: “As of 1 September 2020, the video had been viewed more than 13.7m times; the tweet containing the video had been ‘liked’ more than 350,000 times, re-tweeted more than 139,000 times, and had received nearly 50,000 comments.”

The singer has claimed copyright infringement and sought $300,000 in damages. Trump’s attempt to dismiss the lawsuit was unsuccessful.

The former president’s lawyers have claimed fair use, saying the ad was satire and exempted from copyright laws, and that footage was reposted without knowing its actual origin. They also claimed that Trump has presidential immunity and cannot be sued.

Judge John Koeltl said the defendants did not offer any justification for their "extensive borrowing".
