A team of scientists analysed Pacific Ocean sediments and found that the world can witness up to 14 degrees rise in temperatures, far more than what the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted.&nbsp;

Doubling atmospheric Carbon Dioxide can push levels beyond current expectations of 2.3 to 4.5 degrees Celsius (4.1 to 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit).

Researchers from NIOZ and the Universities of Utrecht and Bristol studied the Pacific sediments near California and found that Earth’s average temperature can rise by 7 to 14 degrees Celsius (13 to 25.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

“The temperature rise we found is much larger than the 2.3 to 4.5 degrees Celsius (4.1 to 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit) that the UN climate panel, IPCC, has been estimating so far,” said the study's first author, Caitlyn Witkowski.

A method developed 20 years ago at NIOZ, called the TEX86 method, was used to determine the past seawater temperature and to find hints of ancient atmospheric CO2 levels.&nbsp;

A 45-year-old drill core extracted from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean was used for the study. Professor Jaap Sinninghe Damsté, senior scientist at NIOZ and professor of organic geochemistry at Utrecht University, said, "The ocean floor at that spot has had oxygen-free conditions for many millions of years", which made it an attractive candidate.

<h2>The climate study</h2>

To derive past atmospheric CO2 content, researchers used the chemical composition of chlorophyll and cholesterol - the two substances commonly found in algae.

They found clues that indicate a dramatic drop in CO2 concentration 15 million years ago. It came down from 650 parts per million to 280 just before the industrial revolution.&nbsp;

When the scientists placed the derived temperature and atmospheric CO2 levels of the past 15 million years together, they found that the average temperature at that time was way beyond what we have today. It was on average 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit): four degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than current temperatures.&nbsp;

Currently, 1,223 sites have been included in UNESCO's World Heritage list. These are considered to be important and need to be protected.

Researchers from Climate X carried out a new study to understand which among them will perish because of climate change.

<h2>How did the team predict the future of world heritage sites?</h2>

Climate X's Spectra platform was used by the team in which models projected how properties, assets and infrastructure will be affected by climate change under different scenarios.

The platform's algorithm quantified the risk from extreme weather to 16 different climate hazards, which ranged from tropical cyclones, extreme heat and flooding, across eight different warming scenarios which may occur in the next 100 years.

In the analysis, 50 important sites were found to be at risk if global greenhouse gas emissions continue increasing at the current rate.

The number one on the list is Indonesia's Subak System which faces the risk of surface flooding, extreme heat days, and drought risk.

The second in line was Australia's Kakadu National Park which faced the risk of surface flooding and wildfires and China's Quanzhou: Emporium of the World emerged in third place by facing the risk of drought.

While the loss of these cultural treasures - many of which have endured for millennia - would of course be devastating, it's also vital to remember the real societal and economic impact of climate change is happening in the here and now," he added.

As people around the world grapple with environmental issues causing climate crisis, ranging from pollution, deforestation, forest fires and heat waves, there has emerged a profound sense of worry and helplessness.&nbsp;

This in many cases leads to a new form of psychological distress, for which experts have coined the term: "Eco-Anxiety".

The American Psychological Association (APA) recognises it as a "chronic fear of environmental doom".&nbsp;

The term encapsulates the psychological impact of ecological concerns faced by individuals as they witness the degradation of our environment and see its visible effects like smog-blanketed skies — daily reminders of the challenges our planet and we face.

<h2>Pollution and mental health</h2>

Recently, the Indian capital New Delhi has been living under a blanket of toxic air, which has made it hard for people to breathe.&nbsp;

There were days when the AQI (Air Quality Index) levels plummeted to a hazardous level of up to 999 in some areas. Naturally, this gave rise to a number of health problems. While many landed in hospitals, others battled a silent enemy.

Recent research has also shed light on the connection between pollution and mental health. Studies indicate that exposure to air pollution can contribute to an increased risk of mental health issues.

Talking to WION, Shannon Olsson, a chemical ecologist with over 20 years of experience said that for Delhi, the well-known pollution causes like vehicular emissions, stubble burning etc "come together in (a) perfect storm to create these incredibly high pollution levels which are really a little hard to comprehend even when you're in Delhi".

<h2>A sense of helplessness&nbsp;</h2>

Olsson, who is the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV) Special Scientific Envoy to India, said that natural disasters, coupled with wars and the many crises lead to a "helplessness that you feel as an individual".

"You feel like, what can I possibly do to try to control this? It feels like you have very little control and that produces obviously a fear because also these things are dangerous."

Olsson, the Founder and Global Director at the echo network says that eco-anxiety can manifest helplessness similar to what one feels when "they've lost a loved one or lost a job," which then "causes huge anxiety" especially among "children and our youth who are growing up in these environments where they feel very, very insecure about their own futures."

This sense of helplessness is also felt by parents.

Talking to WION, Neha Sonawane, a lawyer and a new mother, summed up the eco-anxiety felt by parents in one line: "As I started on this journey of parenthood, it is mostly this feeling of overwhelming sense of responsibility for the world".

"As a scientist I can tell you if you look at the statistics, the world is actually getting better. Overall, people are living better, things are getting better. The world is actually not as bad as it seems. We just have to keep that hope and keep trying."&nbsp;

But in this case, NASA's Earth Observatory says that unusual whirlpool currents were created by high winds on the ocean's surface, stopping the sheet ice from forming. Former US President Donald Trump has once again dismissed the threat of climate change, saying that rising sea levels would lead to more oceanfront properties being developed.&nbsp;

Trump was speaking to&nbsp;Elon Musk on Monday (Aug 12) on X (formerly Twitter) when he made the rather bizarre comment which reiterated his campaign policy regarding climate change.&nbsp;

"You'll have more oceanfront property, right? The biggest threat is not that. The biggest threat is nuclear warming, because we have five countries now that have significant nuclear power, and we have to not allow anything to happen with stupid people like Biden."

It is not the first instance when Trump has sidestepped the conversation around global warming. After the first presidential debate, Trump criticised Joe Biden for the latter's claim that the "only existential threat to humanity is climate change".&nbsp;

“He [Biden] said it again last night, that global warming is an existential threat. And I say that the thing that’s an existential threat is not global warming, where the ocean will rise – maybe, it may go down, also – but it may rise one-eighth of an inch in the next 497 years, they say. This irregularity would need to drop considerably for the remaining year for 2024 not to be hotter than 2023 -- "making it increasingly likely that 2024 is going to be the warmest year on record", said C3S.&nbsp;

It may be mentioned here, July 2024 was 1.48C warmer than the estimated average temperatures for the month during the period 1850-1900, before the world started to swiftly burn fossil fuels.

EU warns 2024 could be record-breaking hot year

There were 13 months of straight heat records this year,&nbsp;but mercifully the streak has halted in July as the El Nino phenomenon began to weaken.

Average temperature in July was 16.91 degrees, according to Copernicus, the European climate agency. That was 1.2 degrees above the 30-year average, but slightly lower than July 2023.&nbsp;
