Hawaii, on Thursday (Jun 20) agreed to a “groundbreaking” legal settlement with young climate activists who filed a lawsuit accusing the US state of violating the state constitution by operating a transportation system which harmed the climate and infringed upon their right to a clean and healthy environment which would officials to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions.

<h2>What is the lawsuit about?</h2>

The settlement reached in Navahine v Hawaii Department of Transportation recognises the children’s constitutional rights to a life-sustaining climate and would require the US state to take action to decarbonise its transportation system in the next 21 years.&nbsp;

The lawsuit, by 13 young people aged between nine and 18, was filed in June 2022 and claimed that Hawaii’s pro-fossil fuel transportation policies violate their state constitutional rights.&nbsp;

The complaint accused the state of prioritising projects including highway expansion instead of those that cut carbon emissions like efforts to introduce electric vehicles and promote walking and cycling.&nbsp;

This, as per the lawsuit, has impacted the plaintiff’s ability to live “healthful lives in Hawaii now and into the future” and violated their right to a clean and healthy environment which is guaranteed by the state’s constitution.&nbsp;

The rising sea levels also threatened to put their lands underwater, the complaint said.

Notably, this was the first-ever youth-led climate case seeking zero emissions in transportation and the second-ever lawsuit in the United States filed by young people who claim their future and health are in jeopardy because of climate change and the state is violating their rights.&nbsp;

<h2>A ‘groundbreaking’ settlement</h2>

Governor of Hawaii Josh Green, a Democrat, announced the “groundbreaking” settlement at a news conference.&nbsp;

“We’re addressing the impacts of climate change today, and needless to say, this is a priority because we know now that climate change is here,” said Green. He added, “It is not something that we’re considering in an abstract way in the future.”

The settlement, which can be enforced in court, calls for the creation of a volunteer youth council to advise the state’s department of transport.&nbsp;

Hawaii, as part of the settlement, will develop a roadmap to achieve zero emissions for its ground, sea, and inner island air transportation systems by 2045.&nbsp;

The US state also plans to dedicate at least $40 million to expand its EV charging network by 2030 and ramp up efforts to improve Hawaii’s pedestrian, bicycle and public transit networks.

The state had sought dismissal of the case arguing that the zero emissions target and other state laws promoting reduced carbon emissions were “aspirational” and could not form the basis of the claim that the state is violating the young plaintiff’s rights.&nbsp;

However, Judge Jeffrey Crabtree in Honolulu rejected the argument in April last year saying that the laws required timely planning and action and that the state’s inaction has already harmed the plaintiffs.&nbsp;

“We have extremely tough goals to hit by 2045 and this is going to make sure we move forward much faster,” Ed Sniffen, the head of Hawaii’s transportation department.&nbsp;

Four in every five people want their country to strengthen its commitments to addressing climate change. This, according to a survey conducted by the United Nations Development Program, in collaboration with Oxford University and Geopoll. Randomised telephone calls were made to over 75,000 people in 77 countries, representing 87% of the global population.

4 in 5 people want more action against climate change: UN survey

Nearly 2,000 children under the age of five are dying due to air pollution every day, said a report released by a US-based independent nonprofit research organisation&nbsp;on Wednesday (Jun 19). The recent study also found that polluted air is not only a second-leading risk factor for the deaths of children but also the general global population.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the report find?</h2>

According to the report titled State of Global Air (SoGA), air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths globally in 2021.&nbsp;

The study conducted by the US-based Health Effects Institute (HEI) also noted that it is not just the outdoor fine particulate matter which is affecting our health but also the indoor air pollution.&nbsp;

Children under five are said to be particularly vulnerable, with health effects linked to air pollution including premature birth, low birth weight, asthma and lung diseases, according to the study.&nbsp;

Exposure to air pollution was linked to more than 700,000 deaths of children under the age of five, in 2021, second only to malnutrition, said the report produced this year in partnership with UNICEF.&nbsp;

The study also found that a staggering 500,000 deaths of children, mostly in Asia and Africa, were linked to household air pollution because of cooking indoors with polluting fuels.&nbsp;

The report noted that some of the greatest health impacts of air pollution were seen in children, with them being “uniquely vulnerable” to the damage it causes as it can start in the womb and lead to health effects that can last a lifetime.

“Despite progress in maternal and child health, every day almost 2000 children under five years die because of health impacts linked to air pollution,” said UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Kitty van der Heijden, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>A global concern</h2>

The study which is based on data from more than 200 countries and territories across the world said that nearly every person on Earth breathes unhealthy levels of air pollution every day and it adversely affects our health.&nbsp;

“This new report offers a stark reminder of the significant impacts air pollution has on human health, with far too much of the burden borne by young children, older populations, and low- and middle-income countries,” said Dr Pallavi Pant, head of global health at HEI and the lead author of the report, in a statement.&nbsp;

She also called on cities and countries to consider “air quality and air pollution as high-risk factors when developing health policies and other noncommunicable disease prevention and control programs.”

PM2.5 particles have been attributed&nbsp;to more than 90 per cent (7.8 million) of air pollution-linked deaths across the world.&nbsp;

The PM2.5 particles, which are less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, are small enough to enter the lungs and stay there and can also enter the bloodstream. These tiny particles can lead to diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lung cancer, and COPD, in adults.&nbsp;

Air pollution has become the second-leading risk factor for death across the world, second only to blood pressure and is followed by excessive tobacco use, according to the report.&nbsp;

Air pollution becomes second leading risk factor of deaths globally, finds study

India recorded more than 40,000 cases of suspected heatstroke this summer and at least 100 people were reported dead owing to a prolonged spell of heatwave, according to authorities. Health ministry data showed at least 110 people died between March 1 and June 18 as northwest and eastern regions were battered by twice the usual number of heatwave days. The union government has directed federal and state institutions to ensure "immediate attention" to patients. Delhi, where water and power crises have exacerbated people's woes, has also asked hospitals to make more beds available. Weather department officials say the temperatures will hover at above-normal temperatures throughout June.

<h2>Madhya Pradesh, Delhi worst hit</h2>

Among all, the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh (MP) and capital Delhi were the worst hit by the heatwave spell. In MP alone, more than 5,200 such cases were reported. Rajasthan also saw 4,300 heat-related cases whereas at least 20 deaths have been reported from Delhi alone. Adjoining Noida has also reported 14 deaths so far.

Hajj deaths 2024 News: Tragedies have marked this year's Hajj pilgrimage, as at least 550 pilgrims have died, primarily because of heat-related illnesses.

Speaking to news agency AFP, diplomats coordinating their countries' responses revealed that at least 323 of those who died were Egyptians.

<h2>Hajj Deaths in 2024</h2>

Citing a figure from the hospital morgue in the Al-Muaisem neighbourhood of Mecca, one of the diplomats said that "all of them (the Egyptians) died because of heat" except for one pilgrim who sustained fatal injuries during a minor crowd crush.

According to an official tally released on Tuesday (June 18), at least 60 Jordanians have also died.

Diplomats reported that the total number of dead bodies at the morgue in Al-Muaisem, one of the biggest in Mecca, was 550. As per AFP estimates, the deaths of pilgrims from various countries total 577.

According to a Saudi study published last year, driven by climate change, temperatures in the area where rituals are performed were rising 0.4 degrees Celsius (0.72 degrees Fahrenheit) each decade.

Saudi officials, as per AFP, had advised pilgrims to use umbrellas, drink plenty of water and avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day. However, with many hajj rituals, including the prayers on Mount Arafat which took place on Saturday (June 15)&nbsp;involving&nbsp;being outdoors for hours in the daytime, avoiding the heat wasn't possible. The Athens Acropolis, Greece's most visited tourist site, will close to the public during the hottest hours of Wednesday as a heatwave bakes the country, the culture ministry said.

The ministry said the UNESCO-listed archaeological site would close from midday to 5:00 pm (0900 to 1400 GMT), with temperatures expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first heatwave of the year in Greece, regularly hit by searing summer temperatures, is due to peak over those two days, and the ministry said the measure could be extended.

Schools will remain closed in several regions of the country on Wednesday and Thursday, including in the capital, while the work ministry has advised public sector employees to work from home.

The Acropolis was also forced to close in July last year during a two-week heatwave unprecedented in its duration.

A record number of almost four million visitors flocked to the site last year, with its popularity boosted in part due to tourists arriving on cruise ships calling in at the port of Piraeus near Athens.

Also read: Trump vows to reverse 'crooked Joe's outrageous executive' border order Firefighters were seen treating people with ice packs and 11 people being taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known. The National Weather Service had predicted record-breaking temperatures in the region for Thursday. An excessive heat warning was administered for Phoenix through Friday (June 7), with residents being urged to limit outdoor activities. Donald Trump, who has repetitively downplayed the impact of climate change, spoke for around 90 minutes at the rally before leaving to attend a fundraiser in San Francisco. Heatwave sweeps California, Arizona and beyond An early-season heatwave is causing life-threatening temperatures for 30 million people from Texas to California. The hottest temperature in the US on Wednesday (June 5) was recorded in Death Valley, California, where it reached a scorching 118 degrees. Also read: Four dead bodies and 11 tonnes of rubbish removed from Himalayan peaks On Thursday (June 6), temperatures are expected to touch 112 degrees in Las Vegas, 111 degrees in Phoenix, 110 degrees in Palm Springs, and 107 degrees in Tucson, Arizona, as well as Fresno, California. Meanwhile, record highs are possible in cities like Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Doctors advise to take excessive heat warnings seriously. Each year in US, hundreds die due to excessive heat, according to CDC WONDER, an online database, and scientists caution that the actual number of heat-related deaths is likely higher. As&nbsp;intense heatwave sweeps across parts of the world, the Indian and French space agencies are working on a unique satellite to study the effects of human-induced climate change, water use, snow melting etc. Abbreviated as 'TRISHNA' (Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment), the satellite&nbsp;would enable high-resolution monitoring of earth's surface and various environmental parameters and&nbsp;anomalies.&nbsp;

On the occasion of Environment Day on June 5th, the Indian Space agency shared insights on TRISHNA. It stated that the craft that is expected to operate for five years, would be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit that's 761kms&nbsp;above the earth. ISRO did not mention any specific status of the mission of its expected launch. In August 2023, based on conversations with French Space agency CNES, WION had reported that TRISHNA could be launched in 2026.&nbsp;

On the objectives of TRISHNA, ISRO said "detailed monitoring of the energy and water budgets of the continental biosphere for quantifying terrestrial water stress and water use and high-resolution observation of water quality and dynamics in coastal and inland waters. In addition, as secondary objectives, the TRISHNA mission will also help in a comprehensive assessment of urban heat islands, detection of thermal anomalies linked to volcanic activity and geothermal resources, and precise monitoring of snow-melt runoff and glacier dynamics. The mission will also provide valuable data on aerosol optical depth, atmospheric water vapor, and cloud cover".

By collecting such extensive amounts of data, TRISHNA would be able to help in agricultural water management- assess irrigation water use, issue advisories for water savings and enhance crop water productivity through efficient and sustainable water management practices, and better micro-watershed management.&nbsp;

In terms of climate monitoring, the mission will track key indicators such as droughts, permafrost changes, and evapotranspiration rates. Urban planners will benefit from detailed urban heat island maps and heat alerts; while water quality monitoring will aid in detecting pollution in coastal and inland water bodies. It will also help in identifying sub-marine groundwater discharge at the coastal fringes.

"TRISHNA satellite is equipped with two primary payloads. The Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) payload, provided by CNES, features a four-channel long-wave infrared imaging sensor capable of high-resolution surface temperature and emissivity mapping. The Visible - Near Infra-Red - Short Wave Infra-Red (VNIR-SWIR) payload, developed by ISRO, includes seven spectral bands designed for detailed mapping of surface reflectance of VSWIR bands for generating important biophysical and radiation budget variables," ISRO said.&nbsp;

The data generated from TRISHNA would contribute to several global initiatives, such as Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM) for agricultural monitoring, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and targets, and the Global Water Watch. Some of the mission’s outputs will serve as Essential Agricultural Variables (EAVs), and Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) for the global community.

The UN Secretary-General delivered a hard-hitting at the American Museum of Natural History on June 5, World Environment Day. He discussed the status of the climate, the risks that world leaders are taking, and what industries and nations, especially the G7 and G20, must do in the upcoming 18 months to preserve humanity's prospects of a habitable future. According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, humanity's contribution to the planet's catastrophic warming is comparable to the meteorite that killed out the dinosaurs. "Like the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, we're having an outsized impact," Guterres said. "In the case of climate, we are not the dinosaurs. We are the meteor. We are not only in danger. We are the danger." According to a report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is an 80 per cent chance that the annual average global temperature will briefly exceed 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels for at least one of the next five years. By early 2025, signatory nations to the Paris Agreement will need to submit revised objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “We are playing Russian roulette with our planet,” said Mr Guterres. “We need an exit ramp off the highway to climate hell. And the good news is that we have control of the wheel. The battle to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees will be won or lost in the 2020s – under the watch of leaders today.” Also read: Rare crystals reveal when Earth first had fresh water, hinting at origin of life Guterres also slammed the fossil fuel sector, calling it the "Godfathers of Climate Chaos." He also chastised advertisers for acting as "enablers" in allowing fossil fuel firms to postpone climate action. "Stop taking on new fossil fuel clients, from today, and set out plans to drop your existing ones," he warned "Mad Men fuelling the madness." He also asked all countries to prohibit advertising from fossil fuel companies, as they have done for "products that harm human health like tobacco." The UN chief reiterated the need for "solidarity levies" on the shipping and aviation industries in addition to calling for a tax on the profits of fossil fuel firms to fund the battle against global warming. Guterres also asked that wealthy nations phase out coal by 2030 and cut oil and gas usage by 60 per cent by 2035. He urged wealthier countries, who have historically been more responsible for carbon emissions, to increase climate help to poorer, more vulnerable countries. (With inputs from agencies)

UN chief likens humans to meteor that killed dinosaurs; calls fossil fuel sector ‘godfathers of climate chaos’

In the past decade, the world has witnessed an extreme rise in temperature on an alarmingly regular basis. Summers are hotter than every, autumn and spring are disappearing, and the environment is changing rapidly. ‘Global warming’ is not just a term in science textbooks, but a daily warning for humanity. On this World Environment Day, let's ask the question: How can we survive the ravages of climate change?

<h2>Alarming data from 2016 - 2024</h2>

Between 2016 and 2019, global temperatures set new records. According to a NASA report, 2020 tied with 2016 as one of the warmest years, with 2021 and 2022 also experiencing near-record-breaking heat.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that the last decade has been the hottest in the past 125,000 years. The heat has also increased the CO2 levels exceeding 410 parts per million, which is a record-breaking number in a million years.&nbsp;

The rise in heat also impacted the seasons dramatically. Summers are longer than ever, and winters are shrinking like water bodies all across the world. This is affecting agriculture and biodiversity in the most vulnerable lands.&nbsp;

"There is a huge change in the climatic pattern. We don't get any autumn or spring... there are either winters or summers," said Kaustav Sanyal, Management Consultant - Accenture Strategy &amp; Consulting.

The UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said that 2022 saw devastating heatwaves across Europe, North America and Asia, exacerbating wildfires, droughts, and crop failures.

<h2>Making the heat bearable: Lessons from Gulf countries</h2>

Countries like the UAE, one of the hottest in the world, are aware of the warning climate is giving to them. Looking at the situation getting worse, the UAE launched multiple initiatives to deal with irreversible climate change. &nbsp;

In 2017, it launched the National Climate Change Plan to reduce carbon emissions by 70% by 2050. UAE invested aggressively in sustainable energy sources like solar parks to generate almost 5,000 MW by 2030.&nbsp;

The UAE has also used advanced technologies like cloud seeding to enhance rainfall and reverse the country's drought possibilities.&nbsp;

This has inspired multiple countries incluidng &nbsp;India.

<h2>'Heat is on' for India, but what is it doing to reduce carbon footprint?</h2>

India was a part of the 2019 climate summit held in Abu Dhabi.

A country with over 1.3 billion population, India has a different set of challenges related to climate.&nbsp;

India in the past decade has taken some crucial steps to reduce its carbon footprint.&nbsp;
The country has set an ambitious target of achieving 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, which was further expanded to 450 GW by 2030.

India's solar energy initiatives are particularly noteworthy.&nbsp;

The International Solar Alliance, launched by India and France, aims to mobilise $1 trillion in investments by 2030 to promote solar energy in 121 member countries.&nbsp;

In 2021, India announced its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 and to reduce carbon intensity by 45% from 2005 levels by 2030.

"India is making strides in sustainability, particularly in renewable energy. Its ambitious targets include 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by the same year. These initiatives aim to enhance energy security, improve public health, mitigate climate change impacts, and conserve natural resources," said Diya Bose, ESG and sustainability associate at Kuwait-based PKC Advisory.

Additionally, India is also actively promoting afforestation and reforestation programmes to enhance carbon sinks.&nbsp;

The Green India Mission aims to increase forest and tree cover, restore degraded ecosystems, and improve biodiversity.

<h2>Carbon footprint in offices: A hidden cost of industry</h2>

One of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions worldwide is corporate offices.&nbsp;

The energy consumed by office buildings for heating, cooling, lighting, and electronic devices accounts for a substantial portion of global CO2 emissions.&nbsp;

"Carbon footprinting measures a company's greenhouse gas emissions, aiding in understanding and reducing environmental impact. In India, 51% of the top 100 companies disclose emissions voluntarily, with 31% setting net-zero targets," noted Diya Bose of PKC Advisory.

Bose noted that SEBI - Securities and Exchange Board of India, India's stock market watchdog - mandates environmental reporting for the top 1,000 listed companies through BRSR or Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting, emphasising environmental responsibility.&nbsp;

"While not explicitly required, carbon footprinting serves as a crucial step toward environmental accountability," Bose noted.

Furthermore, corporate travel, particularly air travel, adds to the carbon footprint. The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) reported that the top 100 global corporations are responsible for approximately 71% of global industrial greenhouse gas emissions.

To mitigate their impact, many companies are adopting sustainable practices. These include implementing energy-efficient technologies, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and promoting remote work (if at all possible) to reduce travel emissions.&nbsp;

Multiple corporate companies have started hiring people who specifically work on sustainability and controlling carbon emissions.&nbsp;

<h2>Have you considered the consequences of not reducing carbon emissions?</h2>

If global warming and carbon emissions are not controlled, the consequences might be bigger than what we think.

Rising temperatures will lead to more frequent and severe heatwaves, storms, and flooding. Sea levels are projected to rise, threatening coastal cities and displacing millions of people. Agriculture will suffer due to altered precipitation patterns, leading to food shortages and increased hunger.&nbsp;

Biodiversity loss will accelerate, with many species unable to adapt to rapidly changing conditions including human beings.&nbsp;

The economic impact will be profound, with damages from extreme weather events and lost productivity costing trillions of dollars.

<h2>What are we doing to combat climate change?</h2>

Many countries are taking various precautions to combat climate change.

Countries like Denmark, Sri Lanka and South Africa are aiming to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050.

"In a balanced scenario where carbon emissions equal carbon removal efforts, carbon sources and sinks play crucial roles. Forests and plants are significant carbon sinks, followed by oceans. Additionally, concepts like carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) are essential for mitigating emissions," said Kaustav Sanyal of Accenture Strategy &amp; Consulting.

The European Union is also committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2050 under the European Green Deal.&nbsp;

This includes reducing emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

China, as the largest CO2 &nbsp;producer, has pledged to peak its emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.&nbsp;

The country is investing heavily in renewable energy and electric vehicles.

<h2>What does the future hold?</h2>

The world is undeniably boiling, and the severity of this crisis intensifies with each passing year. While many countries are making strides, the battle against climate change requires a unified, global effort.&nbsp;

"Sustainability is nothing new, but old wine served in a new bottle," Sanyal said.

The data from the past five years serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of our actions.&nbsp;

We must act now, collectively and decisively, to safeguard our planet for future generations.

In the past decade, the world has witnessed an extreme rise in temperature on an alarmingly regular basis. Summers are hotter than every, autumn and spring are disappearing, and the environment is changing rapidly.

World Environment Day | Boiling summers, disappearing autumns: What are we doing on climate change?

Over 34 million Americans are bracing for extreme heat this week as a "heat dome" settles over the western United States. But what is a heat dome? Here's everything you need to know.

<h2>Heat Dome 101</h2>

To understand what a heat dome is, imagine a giant dome sitting over an area and trapping hot air inside. This results in the generation of heatwaves, which can feel much hotter than usual.&nbsp;

In simple terms, it is one of the meteorological phenomena that happens when a very high-pressure system traps air in a region. This will ultimately lead to extremely high temperatures over an extended period. The trapped heat could result in discomfort, health problems, and even risky conditions, not just for human beings but also for animals and plants.

<h2>America to sweat it out with 40&nbsp;°C+ heat</h2>

As per BBC, people living in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona have been alerted and asked to prepare for temperatures crossing nearly 40&nbsp;°C (104&nbsp;°F) by Friday (7th June). The heat will also likely be felt in the Pacific Northwest later in the week.&nbsp;

Temperatures, according to predictions, might peak at 42.2&nbsp;°C (107.96 degree Fahrenheit °F) from Sacramento to Bakersfield in a widespread area of California. Reportedly, Sacramento has already topped 38&nbsp;°C (100.4 degree Fahrenheit °F) this Tuesday (June 4), a mark it didn't reach until the end of June last year. Some places in south Texas sizzled with scorching temperatures of 47.2&nbsp;°C (116.96 °F) on Tuesday.

The hottest day, as per predictions, is Thursday (June 6), when temperatures are expected to be 5.5-11&nbsp;°C (10-20&nbsp;°F) above average and likely to continue&nbsp;for the rest of the week. Temperature records could be shattered in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, and Fresno.&nbsp;

Heat dome conditions contributed to a dozen deaths last year in the American Southwest.&nbsp;

As per the US Border Patrol in Texas, four migrants trying to enter the US have died over the weekend from heat-related illnesses.

Forecasters have urged residents to drink more liquids, remain in air-conditioned buildings, and wear loose clothing.&nbsp;

The risk was described in stark terms by the National Weather Service in Phoenix, which issued a dire warning: "Heat stroke can be DEADLY," it said in a message on social media Tuesday. The California Environmental Protection Agency has identified outdoor workplaces, older people, and children as the most vulnerable populations during extreme heat conditions, describing it as "an invisible but dangerous consequence of climate change."

The countries met their target of providing a hundred billion dollars in annual climate aid to poor countries for the first time in 2022. However, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) said that it happened two years later than expected. The failure to raise the money on time has eroded trust in climate negotiations.

Due to the harsh weather conditions and climate change, the Strawberry crop has been affected badly in Kashmir region. Many farmers at the Srinagar say the crop has been hit due to untimely rainfall this year which has resulted in less overall production. Watch in for more details!

Climate change is impacting the horticulture industry in North India. In regions like Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, the apple industry is the backbone of their economies, and this time the farmers are grappling with erratic weather conditions like intense rainfall, less snow, and now sudden rise in temperatures. This change in weather conditions is affecting the apple crop as it requires low temperatures for high quality. Due to the sudden heat wave across North India, the fruit orchards are being affected. The sudden sharp temperature fluctuations have led to the fall of the fruit buds and the spread of infectious diseases. Horticulture is one of the main industries in Jammu and Kashmir and contributes around 8 per cent to the GDP. The Kashmiri apple is among the biggest shareholders in the horticulture industry and apple farmers are worried that the sudden rise and dip in temperatures and erratic rains will hurt the crop. ''The climatic conditions have been erratic not only in Jammu and Kashmir but also in Himachal. Day by day what we are experiencing due to global warming, the apple orchard industry is highly impacted. The fruit produce that we had in 2020 was not seen in 2021, the same as what we had in 2021, we couldn't see it in 2022 and it continues. In south Kashmir, there are so many orchards in Shopian which are completely without any blossoms. We do PGR Sprays and despite that, we are not getting the fruit produce we expect. The climate has highly impacted the fruit production and it is very less this year too,'' said Aamir Manzoor, an apple farmer from Shopian in South Kashmir. One of the main reasons for the decrease in production is linked to inadequate snowfall between December and February and untimely rains. Some of the farmers are also worried and question whether the conversion of traditional apple orchards to high-density orchards could have an impact on the environment too. ''We really need to know the reasons why global warming is happening, is it because of factories, we recently saw that Himachal is having a problem with stone fruit and that's due to the smoke from the factories. We are ourselves responsible for this and scientists need to understand this and come up with a solution. We have been converting traditional apple orchards into ultra-high-density ones and we need to know if that's also impacting the environment. How right it is to convert these orchards, we need to know from the scientists. We don't have that much knowledge and we need to see if it's right and what's the future of it. If everyone is converting the land, the farmers need to know how beneficial it is with regard to the environment,'' said Manzoor. The Kashmir Valley has been witnessing a heatwave in May and the MeT department says the heatwave will continue during June as well. The extreme weather changes have already led to a major drop in the produce of the season's first crops, that is strawberries and cherries. The heatwave will impact the apple crop as well. ''The whole of north India is facing a heat wave and Jammu and Kashmir is also witnessing a heat wave from the last one week or so. In the coming days, there will be some respite after next week. After 3rd June, the heat wave will continue again. The people will face inconvenience. Clear skies heat the soil and there is no moisture. Due to this, the horticulture gets impacted a lot, a few crops like strawberry and cherry have been impacted and are facing forced maturity," said Mukhtar Ahmad, Director MeT. The high temperatures also trigger chances of infectious diseases among the trees leading to less production of the fruit.

Climate Change is a reality that can't be denied — although many have tried. On Saturday (May 25), NASA launched a tiny satellite that will help better climate change predictions in a warming world.

The satellite was launched&nbsp;into orbit atop Rocket Lab's Electron rocket from the company's Launch Complex 1 in Māhia, New Zealand at 7:41 p.m. NZST (3:41 a.m. EDT).

<h2>NASA's PREFIRE</h2>

NASA's PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment) mission will use two shoebox-size cube satellites, or CubeSats to measure the amount of heat our planet Earth radiates into space from two of the coldest, most remote regions on the planet — the North and South Poles.

Speaking at a recent news conference, NASA's earth sciences research director Karen St. Germain said "This new information — and we've never had it before — will improve our ability to model what's happening in the poles, what's happening in climate."

The satellite will take infrared measurements far above the Arctic and Antarctic to measure directly the heat that the poles release into space, reports AFP.

"NASA's innovative PREFIRE mission will fill a gap in our understanding of the Earth system–providing our scientists a detailed picture of how Earth's polar regions influence how much energy our planet absorbs and releases," said St. Germain.

"This will improve prediction of sea ice loss, ice sheet melt, and sea level rise, creating a better understanding of how our planet’s system will change in the coming years — crucial information to farmers tracking changes in weather and water, fishing fleets working in changing seas, and coastal communities building resilience."

<h2>Innovative technology</h2>

With PREFIRE, NASA aims to understand how clouds, humidity, and the melting of ice affect heat loss from the poles.

According to Tristan L'Ecuyer, a mission researcher at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, climate change scientists have till now been relying on theoretical models instead of real observations to measure heat loss.&nbsp;

"Hopefully we'll be able to improve our ability to simulate what sea level rise might look like in the future and also how the polar climate change is going to affect the weather systems around the planet," he said.&nbsp;

According to St. Germain, small satellites like this are an affordable method to address specific scientific inquiries. She said that while larger satellites can be thought of as "generalists", the small ones are "specialists," and "NASA needs both."

People experience ecological grief when they lose places, species or ecosystems they care deeply about. These losses pose an increasing danger to mental health and well-being worldwide.

People experience ecological grief when they lose places, species or ecosystems they care deeply about. These losses pose an increasing danger to mental health and well-being worldwide. News about worsening environmental conditions and climate change implications is making headlines all around the world. Environmental scientists, rangers, engineers, activists and policymakers are especially vulnerable to ecological grief because they have firsthand experience with environmental degradation. In a study published in Conservation Letters, researchers relied on psychology and public health studies to develop insights and techniques for coping with loss and applied them to ecological grief. They devised an approach known as "ecological grief literacy". Grief literacy refers to the information, skills and values that can assist with loss and grief. When developing the notion of ecological grieving, they considered the distinctions between bereavement and environmental loss. Bereavement often follows the loss of a loved one, which is a singular event. However, the timing and severity of environmental losses are inherently unknown. They are both ongoing and currently taking place. Also read: Did feathered dinosaurs exist? Study says these reptiles had scaly skins like lizards To better understand how to help those who are most vulnerable to experiencing ecological grief, researchers organised a workshop and shared knowledge on the science of emotion and stress. The session included a variety of activities and tools, allowing participants to choose what was most beneficial to them. How can you help those suffering from ecological grief? Having social support is essential to grieving healthily. Then, people feel taken care of and receive the assistance they most require. A large portion of this assistance is likely to come from family and friends in cases of losses like the death of a loved one. However, ecological grief is not often acknowledged or understood in the community. The people who have worked with nature before are likely to be colleagues or peers who may offer helpful support. Professionals in the environmental field can learn how to listen intently to colleagues who are grieving. Sensitively asking questions allows people to express themselves without fear of judgment or unwanted counsel. If you are the one experiencing persistent ecological grief, it is critical to aim compassion both toward yourself and others. Priority must be given to relaxation and distractions. Ecological grief is a natural and appropriate response to environmental loss. Making ecological grief literacy a part of everyday workplace health and safety would benefit not just the well-being of environmental professionals, but also their efforts to safeguard the species and ecosystems on which all of us rely.
