The latest paper, published on Monday (Jul 15) in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), shows that water flowing from Greenland and Antarctica is resulting in more mass around the equator.&nbsp;

According to the study, which was also published in Nature Geoscience on July 12, the underlying mechanics of the planet and climate change are causing Earth's spin axis to "shift".&nbsp;

The movement of the Earth's rotating axis with respect to the crust is known as polar motion. In the latest study, researchers at ETH Zurich have improved their basic understanding of the same by using state-of-the-art AI models.&nbsp;

They found that if greenhouse gas emissions keep rising, they will eventually become more powerful than the Moon's tidal force. The Moon has been regulating the constant lengthening of days for billions of years.&nbsp;

"We humans have a greater impact on our planet than we realize. And this naturally places great responsibility on us for the future of our planet," said Benedikt Soja, Professor of Space Geodesy at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich.&nbsp;

Notably, the difference in the day's duration is only a few milliseconds, but it has the potential to interfere with GPS navigation, financial transactions and internet traffic—all of which depend on accurate timekeeping, Surendra Adhikari, who is the co-author of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory told news agency AFP.&nbsp;

"It's like when a figure skater does a pirouette, first holding her arms close to her body and then stretching them out," added Soja.&nbsp;

"The initially fast rotation becomes slower because the masses move away from the axis of rotation, increasing physical inertia," Soja said, further adding that Earth is commonly thought of as a sphere, but it's more accurate to call it an "oblate spheroid" that bulges somewhat around the equator, a bit like a satsuma.&nbsp;

"Ongoing climate change could therefore even be affecting processes deep inside the Earth and have a greater reach than previously assumed," added Kiani Shahvandi, lead author of the study and doctoral student, in the press release.&nbsp;

The data by the EU climate monitor does not mean that the 1.5C warming limit agreed upon in Paris in 2015 had&nbsp;been reached as the goal is measured in&nbsp;decades, not individual years. However, Copernicus&nbsp;last month stated it was very likely (80 per cent chance) that Earth's annual average temperatures would at least temporarily exceed the 1.5C mark during the next five years.

The severe heatwave and its effects were on full display during the Haj pilgrimage last month when reports stated that more than 1,000 people had died due to heat-related illnesses.&nbsp;

Since then, the desert has preserved the mummies and other ancient remains and has given significant information about the Chincorro people to archaeologists.

The desert region has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO&nbsp;to help save the relics, however, it might not be enough. While there are many museums in the ancient city of Arica which display the relics from Chincorro culture in climate-controlled exhibits, the remaining antiques that are still buried in the arid desert are at risk.

"If we have an increase in sea surface temperatures, for example, across the coast of northern Chile, that would increase atmospheric humidity," said Claudio LaTorre, a paleo-ecologist at the Catholic University of Chile. "And that in turn would generate decomposition, (in) places where you don't have decomposition today, and you would lose the mummies themselves."&nbsp;

As of Wednesday night, Beryl was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (209.21 km/h), said the NHC. While the force of the winds is expected to weaken somewhat in the next day or two, the NHC warned that Beryl would remain at or near major hurricane strength as it passed the Cayman Islands.

The Mexican government has prepared 112 shelters, each with a capacity to shelter around 20,000 people. Furthermore, schools have been suspended in the state of Quintana Roo, where Beryl is expected to hit with all its mighty force.

Hawaii, on Thursday (Jun 20) agreed to a “groundbreaking” legal settlement with young climate activists who filed a lawsuit accusing the US state of violating the state constitution by operating a transportation system which harmed the climate and infringed upon their right to a clean and healthy environment which would officials to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions.

<h2>What is the lawsuit about?</h2>

The settlement reached in Navahine v Hawaii Department of Transportation recognises the children’s constitutional rights to a life-sustaining climate and would require the US state to take action to decarbonise its transportation system in the next 21 years.&nbsp;

The lawsuit, by 13 young people aged between nine and 18, was filed in June 2022 and claimed that Hawaii’s pro-fossil fuel transportation policies violate their state constitutional rights.&nbsp;

The complaint accused the state of prioritising projects including highway expansion instead of those that cut carbon emissions like efforts to introduce electric vehicles and promote walking and cycling.&nbsp;

This, as per the lawsuit, has impacted the plaintiff’s ability to live “healthful lives in Hawaii now and into the future” and violated their right to a clean and healthy environment which is guaranteed by the state’s constitution.&nbsp;

The rising sea levels also threatened to put their lands underwater, the complaint said.

Notably, this was the first-ever youth-led climate case seeking zero emissions in transportation and the second-ever lawsuit in the United States filed by young people who claim their future and health are in jeopardy because of climate change and the state is violating their rights.&nbsp;

<h2>A ‘groundbreaking’ settlement</h2>

Governor of Hawaii Josh Green, a Democrat, announced the “groundbreaking” settlement at a news conference.&nbsp;

“We’re addressing the impacts of climate change today, and needless to say, this is a priority because we know now that climate change is here,” said Green. He added, “It is not something that we’re considering in an abstract way in the future.”

The settlement, which can be enforced in court, calls for the creation of a volunteer youth council to advise the state’s department of transport.&nbsp;

Hawaii, as part of the settlement, will develop a roadmap to achieve zero emissions for its ground, sea, and inner island air transportation systems by 2045.&nbsp;
