Former UN climate chief Patricia Espinosa, in what can be seen as a cautionary statement, highlighted the potential jeopardy of Donald Trump's victory in the upcoming US presidential election on global climate ambitions, including the Paris Agreement.

Espinosa believes that Trump could withdraw the Paris Agreement, an important milestone in global efforts to address climate change which has drawn a collective commitment by nearly every country in the world to combat this pressing issue.

“I worry [about the potential election of Trump] because it would have very strong consequences, if we see a regression regarding climate policies in the US,” Espinosa said while also adding, “We are not yet aligned to 1.5C. Trump’s victory in US presidential polls may lead to climate setback, warns ex-UN climate chief

Global warming, which can disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems, is now becoming a huge issue for the survival of species in the mountain regions. A new study has revealed that species dwelling in 17 mountainous regions across the globe is facing the risk of being on the verge of extinction due to the impact of global warming.

This stark research was published in the journal Nature. Even as there is known information on how phenomenon like glacier retreat, shifts in vegetation zones, and loss of biodiversity can lead to havoc on mountain ecosystems. An international team of researchers, has now put a renewed spotlight on the alarming consequences of global warming in these regions.

The study conducted by the team, spearheaded by Academia Sinica in Taiwan, identified mountainous areas in diverse regions which are particularly vulnerable to the ravages of global warming.

These risk-prone regions include the Northeast Asia, Iran-Pakistan belt, Western America, Brazilian highlands, the Mediterranean basin, and Mexico.

The team has also showed an urgency on the meteorological monitoring stations in mountainous areas globally because they play a crucial role in understanding the interactions between weather patterns and mountain ecosystems. These stations provide valuable data on temperature, wind patterns, precipitation, humidity, and other meteorological parameters.

The research has introduced a new methodology to estimate climate velocities in mountainous terrains. This incorporates vital factors such as surface warming and humidity.

Study's lead author Dr Wei-Ping Chan reportedly explained, “The mountainous regions of Taiwan, like Japan, are more affected by humidity-induced high velocities than continental regions. Our study suggests that accounting for humidity is critical to fully understanding the variability of temperature isothermal shifts in mountainous areas worldwide."

Gen Z rates climate change as its top concern: Study

South Sudan has long been hit by climate change-exacerbated disasters like recurring droughts and floods. Now, extreme heat is forcing the world’s youngest nation to close its schools. The authorities have ordered schools across the country shuttered because of a wave of excessive heat that is expected to last at least two weeks. Temperatures are forecast to reach 113 degrees Fahrenheit, far above the 90-degree highs typically experienced in the dry season from December to March.

A recent study has found that since 1970, both March and April became warmer across India, raising the likelihood of uncomfortable and possibly dangerous heat conditions. As a result, in some states, temperatures around Holi (Indian festival of colours) were more likely to exceed 40 degrees Celsius—a rarity in the early 1970s.

The study, conducted by Climate Central, a US-based group of scientists and communicators, analysed daily temperatures from January 1, 1970, to December 31, 2023, as reported by PTI.

Here are the findings

According to the study, the northern and western regions of India experienced the most significant warming during March compared to 1970 levels. Jammu and Kashmir exhibited the highest increase in average temperature, at around 2.8 degrees Celsius. In April, warming was more evenly distributed across India, with Mizoram recording the largest increase of approximately 1.9 degrees Celsius since 1970.

Looking at temperatures around Holi, the study noted that in the early 1970s, only three states—Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar—had over a five per cent chance of experiencing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in late March. Presently, this count has risen to encompass nine states—incorporating the initial three states, along with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh—with Maharashtra showing a significant 14 per cent probability.

The researchers analysed 51 cities across India and found that 37 of them, or almost 73 per cent, now have at least a one per cent chance of reaching temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher. Additionally, 11 cities have a probability of 10 per cent or more. Bilaspur currently has the highest risk at 31 per cent, which is 2.5 times higher than in the 1970s.

Alps grapples with climate change, know what snow retreat can lead to

A recent study by Global Witness warns that emissions from major oil and gas companies could lead to 11.5 million extra deaths from heat-related causes by 2100.

What do the numbers say?

The analysis focussed on top players like Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and Chevron. It estimates a staggering 11.5 million excess heat deaths by the end of the century due to their emissions up to 2050.

A call to action

Sarah Biermann Becker from Global Witness emphasises the urgency, stating that even a slight temperature rise could prove lethal. Governments must intervene to steer the transition away from fossil fuels.

“Every 0.1C of warming will be lethal. Unless the supermajors change course quickly, the death toll will be comparable to some of history’s most brutal wars. We cannot leave it up to them. Governments need to step in, mitigate the impact of extreme heat, and urgently ramp up the transition away from fossil fuels,” the senior investigator at Global Witness told The Guardian.

How did the study derive this conclusion?

The study relied on the mortality cost of the carbon model developed by Columbia University. It predicts 226 excess heat deaths per million tonnes of carbon released. This model is also used by organisations such as Oxfam.

The study revealed that even if we achieve net zero carbon emissions globally by 2050, the company's production will still cause 5.5 million excess deaths.

How high the stakes are?

If no immediate action is taken to curb emissions, the consequences could be dire. Intense heatwaves have already claimed lives worldwide, with vulnerable populations being hit the hardest.

Environmental economist Shouro Dasgupta told The Guardian, “We’re already seeing the impacts of heat stress on workers around the world, particularly on people in outdoor or heavy-duty industries.

“This will likely get much worse as the planet continues to heat up. We need labour protection policies that are tailored to local needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. This isn’t just a moral question – it’s also in the economic interests of employers to provide adequate protection for their workers,” he added.

UN body issues warning to world, says 2014-2023 was hottest decade on record

New research indicates that global heating will precipitate a significant decline in snow cover in the Australian Alps, surpassing declines in six other major skiing regions.

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Bayreuth in Germany and published on March 15, underscores the urgent ramifications of the climate crisis.

Also read: Seven 'ghost particles' pierce through Earth, get captured by IceCube observatory at South Pole

The research warns of a potential 78 per cent reduction in snow cover in the Australian Alps by the end of the century, a rate much higher than that projected in regions such as the European Alps, Japanese Alps, and Southern Alps of New Zealand. It anticipates that 13 per cent of ski areas worldwide may lose all natural snow cover under scenarios of high emissions.

"Ongoing climate change will globally lead to a substantial reduction in annual snow cover days in current ski areas under all emissions scenarios," the study asserts.

It further highlights a significant rise in ski areas devoid of snow in the future.

Examining seven major mountainous skiing regions, including the European Alps, Andes, Appalachian Mountains, and others, the study evaluated the impacts of three climate change scenarios: "low," "high," and "very high" emissions. Regardless of the emission scenario, it forecasts a notable decrease in annual snow cover days across these areas.

Ski areas in the southern hemisphere are projected to be particularly affected by climate change, especially under scenarios of high emissions. Australia's anticipated 78 per cent decline in snow cover stands out as the highest among the regions studied.

The study suggests that ski resorts located in densely populated regions will bear the brunt of global warming, potentially leading to decreased economic profitability.

While current strategies like artificial snowmaking are in use to mitigate snow scarcity, the study cautions that they may prove insufficient under severe climate change scenarios.

To counteract the effects of climate change, the study proposes technical and management strategies, such as relocating or expanding ski areas into less populated, higher-elevation mountain areas.

Also read: Scientists record 'great swarm' of underwater earthquakes that can soon trigger a volcano

However, it acknowledges that such actions may pose threats to the biodiversity of the mountains and their natural ecosystems.

Despite the economic significance of skiing for local communities, the study emphasises the need to address the ecological implications of expanding ski areas and shifting tourism patterns towards higher elevations. It underscores the importance of finding sustainable solutions that balance economic interests with environmental conservation.

Also read: Seven 'ghost particles' pierce through Earth, get captured by IceCube observatory at South Pole The research warns of a potential 78 per cent reduction in snow cover in the Australian Alps by the end of the century, a rate much higher than that projected in regions such as the European Alps, Japanese Alps, and Southern Alps of New Zealand. Here's how Ski areas in the southern hemisphere are projected to be particularly affected by climate change, especially under scenarios of high emissions. Also read: Scientists record 'great swarm' of underwater earthquakes that can soon trigger a volcano However, it acknowledges that such actions may pose threats to the biodiversity of the mountains and their natural ecosystems. Despite the economic significance of skiing for local communities, the study emphasises the need to address the ecological implications of expanding ski areas and shifting tourism patterns towards higher elevations. It underscores the importance of finding sustainable solutions that balance economic interests with environmental conservation. (With inputs from agencies)
