A groundbreaking study by a team led by the Pennsylvania State University has revealed that trees, which are considered the lungs of our planet Earth, release more carbon dioxide (CO2) in warmer and drier climates.

"With an analysis of a global dataset of tree tissue, a team led by Penn State researchers demonstrated that the rate of photorespiration in trees is up to two times higher in warmer climates, especially when water is limited," Penn State said.&nbsp;

The study was led by researcher Max Lloyd at Penn State. This unexpected revelation challenged the prevailing notion of trees as climate change warriors and prompted urgent questions about the implications for our global future.

Notably, reducing carbon dioxide emissions is crucial for mitigating climate change, as this is a major greenhouse gas contributing to global warming.&nbsp;

The research also highlighted that trees in regions with heightened temperatures and water scarcity engage in accelerated photorespiration. Photorespiration is a process that occurs in the cells of plants during photosynthesis, particularly in conditions of high temperatures.

Photorespiration involves the uptake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide by the plant, in contrast to the primary photosynthesis&nbsp;process, which involves the inhaling of carbon dioxide and release of oxygen by trees.&nbsp;

So, essentially Photorespiration reverses the carbon-capturing process of photosynthesis. "We have knocked this essential cycle off balance," said Lloyd.

"Plants and climate are inextricably linked. The biggest draw-down of CO2 from our atmosphere is photosynthesising organisms. It's a big knob on the composition of the atmosphere, so that means small changes have a large impact," he added.&nbsp;

The study also uncovered that trees in these challenging conditions can emit about double the CO2 as their counterparts in cooler and wetter surroundings. Currently, plants absorb around 25 percent&nbsp;of human-emitted CO2, acting as a crucial carbon sink.&nbsp;

Trees in warmer, water-scarce regions emit two times higher carbon dioxide: Study

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California has made a startling update on the state of Greenland's ice sheet. Contrary to previous estimates, a comprehensive analysis of satellite data revealed that the Greenland Ice Sheet has lost about 21 per cent more ice mass in the last four decades than previously thought.

The study, published in Nature on January&nbsp;17, sheds light on the accelerating retreat of the majority of glaciers on the landmass.

This is now posing potential risks for future ocean circulation.&nbsp;

Chad Greene, Lead Author and Glacier Scientist at JPL said,&nbsp;"When the ice at the end of a glacier calves and retreats, it’s like pulling the plug out of the fjord, which lets ice drain into the ocean faster."

"Previously, we had bits and pieces – lots of local studies," Alex Gardner, co-author and JPL Cryosphere scientist, said adding, "But what this study offers is a systematic and comprehensive view that has led to some pretty significant insights that we didn’t have about the ice sheet before."&nbsp;

The comprehensive study, drawing from nearly a quarter million pieces of satellite data, revealed that of the 207 glaciers studied, 179 have significantly retreated since 1985. It further showed that only one glacier is experiencing slight growth.

Notably, the Greenland Ice Sheet has lost approximately 1,140 billion tonnes of ice mass. Most of the loss occurred below sea level in fjords on Greenland's periphery.

This unprecedented ice loss, though not directly contributing to sea level rise, could impact ocean circulation, according to the researchers.&nbsp;

The additional ice loss represented an increased influx of freshwater into the ocean.

Azerbaijan's President, Ilham Aliyev, announced this decision, which has been described as "regressive" by the She Changes Climate campaign group.

The lack of gender diversity is deemed concerning, especially given the global impact of climate change. In contrast, the COP28 climate summit held in the United Arab Emirates last month had 63 per cent&nbsp;female representation on its organising committee.

The COP29 committee is predominantly composed of government ministers or officials, with key roles assigned to figures such as the head of the state security service and the head of Azerbaijan's state gas distribution network. She Changes Climate expressed concern over the absence of women in decision-making positions related to a critical global issue like climate change.

<h2>Calls for equal representation and environmental integrity</h2>

She Changes Climate called for equal representation in the governance of COP29, emphasising the need for gender parity in addressing climate challenges that affect the entire world. The organisation highlighted that climate change is a global issue and should not be addressed by only half of the world's population.

Moreover, concerns were raised about potential conflicts of interest, given the heavy reliance on fossil fuel production by Azerbaijan, the host of COP29.

For the second consecutive year, the UN's primary climate talks will be hosted by a petro-state heavily dependent on fossil fuel production. The president-designate of COP29, tasked with coordinating global climate action, is Mukhtar Babayev, the minister of ecology and natural resources. Babayev's previous extensive tenure with the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (Socar) has raised concerns, especially as Azerbaijan plans to significantly increase fossil fuel production in the coming decade.

She Changes Climate reiterated the need for a clear separation between the fossil fuel industry and the COP presidency to ensure environmental integrity. The call stems from concerns that individuals with ties to the fossil fuel industry may compromise the objective of transitioning away from fossil fuels, a pivotal step to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis.

Tensions from COP28 still linger, as the president of COP28, Sultan Al Jaber, faced accusations of conflicts of interest due to his role as the chief executive of the UAE's state oil company, Adnoc. Al Jaber's remarks during an exchange with Mary Robinson at a She Changes Climate event fuelled controversy, emphasising the challenges of balancing sustainable development with fossil fuel phaseouts. Despite the agreement at COP28 to transition away from fossil fuels, concerns persist over the commitment to such objectives, especially when key figures maintain ties to the fossil fuel industry.&nbsp;

No women in 28-member team: COP29 organising committee faces backlash for gender imbalance

The seas are the most obvious sign of global warming because they absorb 90% of the heat that is trapped by carbon emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. Scientists said that in 2023, the oceans absorbed record amounts of heat, and the data indicated that over the previous ten years, the oceans had warmed significantly annually.

Climate change: 2023 smashes records for surface temperature and ocean heat

Global warming pushes ocean temperatures off the charts: Study

This year could be hotter under El Nino's influence than the record-shattering 2023, the United Nations warned Friday, as it urged drastic emissions cuts to combat climate change.

The UN's World Meteorological Organization said new monthly temperature records were set every month between June and December, and the pattern is likely to continue due to the warming El Nino weather phenomenon.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted there is a one in three chance that 2024 will be warmer than 2023 -- and a 99 percent certainty that 2024 will rank among the five warmest years ever.

NASA climatologist Gavin Schmidt, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, estimated the odds were even higher.

"I put it at about 50-50: 50 percent chance it'll be warmer, 50 percent chance it will be slightly cooler," he told AFP, adding there were hints of "mysterious" changes to Earth's climate systems, that would nonetheless require more data to confirm or refute.

The UN's WMO weather and climate agency said July and August last year were the two hottest months ever recorded, as it officially confirmed 2023 had been the warmest year on record "by a huge margin".

The WMO said the 2023 annual average global temperature was 1.45 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900).

The 2015 Paris climate accords aimed to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels -- and 1.5C if possible.

The WMO's new secretary-general Celeste Saulo warned that El Nino, which emerged mid-2023, is likely to turn up the heat even further in 2024.

The naturally-occurring climate pattern, typically associated with increased heat worldwide, usually increases global temperatures in the year after it develops.

"The shift from cooling La Nina to warming El Nino by the middle of 2023 is clearly reflected in the rise in temperature," she said.

"Given that El Nino usually has the biggest impact on global temperatures after it peaks, 2024 could be even hotter."

<h2>Humanity's 'biggest challenge'</h2>

NOAA said the 2023 global surface temperature was 1.18C above the 20th-century average, and was hotter than the next warmest year, 2016, by a record-setting margin of 0.15C.

The Arctic, northern North America, central Asia, the North Atlantic and the eastern tropical Pacific were particularly hotter, it said.

Saulo said climate change was now "the biggest challenge that humanity faces".

A WMO report in November found that concentrations of the three main heat-trapping greenhouse gases -- carbon dioxide,&nbsp;
methane and nitrous oxide -- reached record high levels in 2022, with preliminary data indicating that the levels continued to grow in 2023.

"Climate change is escalating -- and this is unequivocally because of human activities," said Saulo.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said humanity's actions were "scorching the Earth".

"2023 was a mere preview of the catastrophic future that awaits if we don't act now," he said.

The WMO said that since the 1980s, each decade has been warmer than the previous one -- while the warmest nine years on record had all been since 2015.

The EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service issued its 2023 temperature findings on Tuesday, while NOAA and NASA released theirs simultaneously with the WMO on Friday.

The WMO consolidates figures from six major international datasets to provide an authoritative temperature assessment.

It said the 10-year average temperature from 2014 to 2023 was 1.20C above the pre-industrial average.
Even if Earth's average surface temperature breaches the 1.5C mark in 2024, it does not mean the world has failed to meet the&nbsp;

Paris Agreement target of capping global warming under that threshold.

That would occur only after several successive years above the 1.5C benchmark, and even then the 2015 treaty allows for the possibility of reducing Earth's temperature after a period of "overshoot".

In a deserted quarry near Cairo, New York, researchers have unearthed the planet's most ancient forest, embedded in rocks dating back 385 million years.&nbsp;According to the BBC, while the existence of the ancient forest was previously known to the research team, it was the first instance of a comprehensive investigation to determine the ages of the plants and trees thriving in that location.

<h2>Fossilised roots: A window to the past</h2>

The fossilised roots preserved in these rocks offer a glimpse into the past, representing an ancient forest that covered approximately 400 kilometres, or around 250 miles.

The study of these fossils falls under the domain of palaeobotany, where "paleo" denotes old or ancient, and "botany" pertains to the study of plants.

The researchers, hailing from the University of Binghamton in the US and Cardiff University in Wales, meticulously examined diverse plant and tree fossils, officially identifying this as Earth's oldest known forest.

Unlike contemporary trees that propagate through seeds, the ancient trees in this forest had a distinctive reproductive strategy. Instead of seeds, they relied on spores for reproduction.

This method, familiar to those acquainted with fungi, involves the dispersal of spores into the air for proliferation. The discovery challenges our understanding of ancient ecosystems and the diverse ways in which plant life evolved over millions of years.

<h2>Implications for earth's climate evolution</h2>

The significance of this ancient forest extends beyond its historical value. The roots of these trees played a critical role in extracting carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, sequestering it and contributing to a transformative shift in the planet's climate. This finding adds a crucial piece to the puzzle of Earth's geological and environmental evolution.

January is more than just the month for New Year&nbsp;resolutions and fresh starts. It also marks a growing movement - Veganuary - that is slowly but steadily gaining momentum.

<h2>What is Veganuary?</h2>

Veganuary is a global campaign that encourages individuals to embrace a plant-based lifestyle, if not forever, at least for the month of January.&nbsp;

The word veganuary is born from the fusion of "vegan" and "January," and contrary to what many of us may think, it is not just a dietary trend; it's a conscientious awakening.

As Shreya Swaminath, Director of Farm Animal Protection at Humane Society International/India puts it, "There is an urgent need to transform our food systems, which are using progressively more inhumane and carbon-intensive methods of raising animals to meet consumer demand."

In an exclusive conversation with WION, Swaminath emphasised that swapping animal proteins with plant-based foods even just once a week can make a tremendous change.

"The simple act of swapping animal proteins with plant-based foods even once a week can significantly reduce animal suffering and greenhouse gas emissions. The power to create change is in each of our hands - rather on each of our plates!," she said.

<h2>Meat and environment</h2>

Over the years, multiple studies and research have proved that eating meat is bad for the environment. In July, a study published in the journal Food showed that a vegan diet can help cut down climate-heating emissions, water pollution and land use by 75 per cent. This is compared to diets that have more than 100 grams of meat a day.

Shikha Jain, Manager of Public Outreach at Humane Society International/India, adds a broader perspective to the vegan movement. She challenges the notion of veganism as merely a dietary choice, asserting, "It's time to change our perception towards veganism as just another dietary practice. It is, in fact, a wholesome lifestyle that can impact a wider circle than merely our health."

Jain highlights the far-reaching consequences of animal farming, affecting not only public health but also the environment, animal welfare, food security, and the spread of infectious diseases.&nbsp;

From resolutions to climate revolution: Is 'Veganuary' more than just another fad?

A report published on Thursday (January 11) said that in the year 2023 alone, the world's oceans absorbed an amount of excess heat so high that it was enough to "boil away billions of Olympic-sized swimming pools."

Respective estimates from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Chinese Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) say that the world's oceans absorbed around 9 to 15 zettajoules more than they did in 2022.

One zettajoule of energy roughly equals ten times the electricity generated in the whole world in a year.

"Annually the entire globe consumes around half a zettajoule of energy to fuel our economies", according to the statement.

"Another way to think about this is 15 zettajoules is enough energy to boil away 2.3 billion Olympic-sized swimming pools."&nbsp;

Seventy per cent of Earth's surface is covered by oceans which have absorbed 90 per cent of the excess heat produced by human activity and carbon pollution from human activity since the industrial age.

The study, which has been published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, has said that temperatures at the surface of the sea and the energy stored in the upper 2000 metres of the ocean&nbsp;reached record highs.

Some of the heat stored in oceans contributed to making the year 2023 witness record heatwaves, droughts and wildfires.

There is a reason for this. The warmer the ocean gets, the more heat and moisture enters the atmosphere. This in turn leads to erratic weather involving strong winds and powerful rain.

Burning of fossil fuels contributes to global warming which in turn leads to warmer temperatures at the sea surface.

The weather phenomenon El Nino also resulted in a rise in sea temperatures in the southern Pacific Ocean which contributes to hotter weather globally. El Nino, which is in effect right now, is expected to peak in 2024.

The report also said that ocean salinity is at an all-time high. This results in a process of "stratification", which involves the separation of water in layers that no longer mix.

A report published on Thursday (January 11) said that in the year 2023 alone, the world's oceans absorbed an amount of excess heat so high that it was enough to "boil away billions of Olympic-sized swimming pools." Respective estimates from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Chinese Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) say that the world's oceans absorbed around 9 to 15 zettajoules more than they did in 2022. One zettajoule of energy roughly equals ten times the electricity generated in the whole world in a year. "Annually the entire globe consumes around half a zettajoule of energy to fuel our economies", according to the statement. "Another way to think about this is 15 zettajoules is enough energy to boil away 2.3 billion Olympic-sized swimming pools." Watch | India: Climate change triggers rainfall deficit in Kashmir leaving Gulmarg snowless × Seventy per cent of Earth's surface is covered by oceans which have absorbed 90 per cent of the excess heat produced by human activity and carbon pollution from human activity since the industrial age. The study, which has been published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, has said that temperatures at the surface of the sea and the energy stored in the upper 2000 metres of the ocean reached record highs. This results in a process of "stratification", which involves the separation of water in layers that no longer mix. Kashmir Valley is witnessing an unprecedented change in the weather. In January, tourist resorts such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg would typically have accumulated ample snow by now. But this year, the winter wonderland of Kashmir, Gulmarg is dry with no snow anywhere to be seen. Experts attribute the disappointment of tourists who visit to witness the snow to global warming.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), European Union's climate monitoring arm, said on Tuesday (January 9) that 2023 was the hottest year ever on record. The deputy head of C3S even said that the temperatures in 2023 'likely' exceeded those in last 100,000 years.

"It is also the first year with all days over one degree warmer than the pre-industrial period," said Samantha Burgess, deputy head of the C3S.&nbsp;

"Temperatures during 2023 likely exceed those of any period in at least the last 100,000 years."

With this, it has been observed that Earth's surface almost crossed 1.5 degree Celsius level above those in pre-industrial times.

The 1.5C level is an internationally agreed critical level within which, it is essential to contain Global Warming.

The year 2023 witnessed catastrophic events like massive wildfires in Canada, extreme droughts in Africa, summer heatwaves in Europe and record increase in winter temperatures in Australia and South America.

AFP quoted an expert who warned that such events will continue to occur if we do not transition from fossil fuels and reach net zero emissions.

The phenomena of climate change and global warming took centre stage in South Asia too in 2023, perhaps like never before. Torrential unseasonal rains, floods, weather extremes, melting Himalayan ice, and more put the focus on the region being a major victim of climate change as well as the need for joint efforts from countries in South Asia to take on the problem.
