Just a day after the world's hottest day ever was recorded, Monday, July 22 marks the hottest day on record. The record was based on preliminary data from a European Union monitoring agency.

According to Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union's Earth Observation Programme which has been tracking patterns since 1940, the global average surface air temperature has risen to 17.15 degrees Celsius, 0.06 degrees more than that of Sunday's.

The previous record was set in July 2023 when four consecutive days in a row recorded the hottest day. The global average surface air temperature stood at 17.08 degrees Celsius. Before that, August 2016 witnessed the hottest day on record.

"This past Monday might have set a new global record for warmest absolute global average temperature ever — by that I mean going back tens of thousands of years," said Karsten Haustein, a climate scientist at Leipzig University in Germany, as reported by Reuters.

Cities in Japan, Indonesia and China have witnessed record-breaking temperatures in recent days. Gulf countries are also experiencing stifling heat indexes and high humidity with mercury going over 60 degrees Celsius. Parts of Europe have recorded temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.

According to scientists, the reason for these records is climate change which is growing with the burning of fossil fuels. Last year's records were resultant of climate change combined with the El Nino climate pattern, which is the unusual warming of surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean. However, that is not the case this year.

Haustein believes it was "remarkable" that the record is still being broken even though the world is not experiencing the El Nino effect and is in a neutral state.

The United Kingdom's top climate change advisory body, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), has issued a stark warning to Keir Starmer's new Labour government, urging it to act "fast" to put Britain on target to meet its 2030 climate targets.

It pointed out that the UK has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 68 per cent from 1990 levels by 2030, which is "only six years away," and that "the country is not on track to hit this target".

The CCC, as per AFP, said that only a "third of the emissions reductions required to achieve the 2030 target are currently covered by credible plans".

Days are becoming longer because of the climate crisis, a new analysis has suggested. This has happened due to the mass melting of polar ice, which is reshaping the planet. Scientists have said that the phenomenon is a striking demonstration of how humanity's actions are transforming the Earth and even affecting its rotation speed and axis.

The Moon's gravitational pull and internal processes in the core and mantle were the main forces governing these motions. However, the melting of ice sheets is currently interfering with these natural processes.

The latest paper, published on Monday (Jul 15) in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), shows that water flowing from Greenland and Antarctica is resulting in more mass around the equator.

According to the study, which was also published in Nature Geoscience on July 12, the underlying mechanics of the planet and climate change are causing Earth's spin axis to "shift".

The movement of the Earth's rotating axis with respect to the crust is known as polar motion. In the latest study, researchers at ETH Zurich have improved their basic understanding of the same by using state-of-the-art AI models.

They found that if greenhouse gas emissions keep rising, they will eventually become more powerful than the Moon's tidal force. The Moon has been regulating the constant lengthening of days for billions of years.

"We humans have a greater impact on our planet than we realize. And this naturally places great responsibility on us for the future of our planet," said Benedikt Soja, Professor of Space Geodesy at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich.

Studies on how climate change affects mating patterns of animals have been coming out in the recent past. Now, a new analysis has posited that certain insects may be facing difficulty in finding mates because sexual behaviour is connected to their body colour, which in turn is often affected by atmospheric temperatures.

One insect in question is the ambush bug. Darker male ambush bugs warm up more easily on cold mornings. That will help them get sexual partners faster than their brighter counterparts.

A review article published in the journal Ecology and Evolution pointed out how sexual selection is affected by colour patterns in male ambush bug.

As per the study, the male insect changes colour to dark based on heat in the atmosphere. It is a crucial aspect for mating, as darker males attract more females.

The expression of insect colours in terms of quantity and quality can be impacted by environmental factors including temperature, rainfall, and solar radiation, noted the study. Temperature directly affects pigment production.
Insects in colder environments tend to be darker, as melanin production is greater.

"The selective advantage of this response to environmental temperature is that darker bodies can absorb more solar radiation than lighter bodies, allowing darker individuals to remain active for longer periods in colder regions, which may increase reproductive success and feeding rates," said the study, citing earlier research.

The Key Largo tree cactus, scientifically known as Pilosocereus robinii, has gone extinct. This rare species was native to the Florida Keys and characterised by its slender, columnar stems reaching up to 20 feet (6 metres).

A Botanical marvel

Characterised by delicate white or pinkish flowers that bloom at night and vibrant red and purple fruits that birds and mammals find appealing, the Key Largo tree cactus was a botanical marvel first discovered in 1992 and monitored intermittently since then.

Impact of rising sea levels

Sea level rise, rising tides and intense storms collectively led to the extinction of the wild Key Largo tree cactus population at its sole known location in the Florida Keys, USA.

The Key Largo tree cactus, scientifically known as Pilosocereus robinii, has gone extinct. This rare species was native to the Florida Keys and characterised by its slender, columnar stems reaching up to 20 feet (6 metres). A Botanical marvel Characterised by delicate white or pinkish flowers that bloom at night and vibrant red and purple fruits that birds and mammals find appealing, the Key Largo tree cactus was a botanical marvel first discovered in 1992 and monitored intermittently since then. Impact of rising sea levels Sea level rise, rising tides and intense storms collectively led to the extinction of the wild Key Largo tree cactus population at its sole known location in the Florida Keys, USA. The European Union's climate monitor has revealed that last month was the hottest June on record across the globe. The global temperature in June was record warm for the 13th straight month and it marked the 12th straight month that the world was 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial times.

Beryl on Monday (Jul 8) brought to Texas howling winds and torrential rains that killed at least three people and left 2.7 million houses without power. Along with this, the tropical storm caused extensive flooding on highways, delayed more than 1,300 flights and caused the closure of schools and major oil ports.

The season's earliest category 5 hurricane on record, Beryl, has weakened to a tropical storm after hitting the coastal Texas town of Matagorda with all the might of a Category 1 hurricane.

What is a Category 1 hurricane?

A hurricane, as per the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is considered a Category 1 if it sustains winds between 74 (119 km/h) and 95 miles per hour (152.89 km/h).

While Category 1 hurricanes are not considered "major hurricanes" until they reach Category 3, they are still very dangerous and can bring with them widespread destruction.

Beryl's devastation

In Texas, Beryl claimed the lives of three. As per the news agency Reuters, a 53-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman were killed in two separate incidents in the Houston area when trees fell on their homes.

A third individual, a City of Houston employee, drowned in an underpass while travelling to work.

Previously, in Mexico and the Caribbean, the storm killed 11 people, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick told reporters.

"For those of you in northeast Texas, be aware. You will have tropical storm winds, maybe as late as midnight or 1 am. You will have flooding, you will have rain, and you need to stay off the roads," he warned.

While state officials are yet to assess the damage wrought by storm Beryl, Mayor John Whitmire told reporters that due to the hurricane, floodwaters across most of Houston have exceeded 10 inches (25.4 centimetres).

"We're literally getting calls across Houston right now asking for first responders to come rescue individuals in desperate life safety conditions," he said.

Furthermore, more than 1,300 flights were cancelled, as officials ordered evacuations in some beach towns.

European Union's climate monitor on Monday (Jul 8) revealed that last month was the hottest June on record across the globe. The global average temperature recorded last month broke the previous June record set in 2023.

Since June last year, the world has baked for 12 consecutive months, setting a streak of unprecedented global heat, as per the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The data suggests that 2024 could pip 2023 as the hottest year since record-keeping began.

"This is more than a statistical oddity and it highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate," said the service director, Carlo Buontempo.

"Even if this specific streak of extremes ends at some point, we are bound to see new records being broken as the climate continues to warm."

C3S, a scientific organisation that belongs to the EU's space programme used data from satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations to arrive at the conclusion. The data showed that June 2024 was the 12th month in succession with temperatures 1.5C greater than their average between 1850 and 1900.

The data by the EU climate monitor does not mean that the 1.5C warming limit agreed upon in Paris in 2015 had been reached as the goal is measured in decades, not individual years. However, Copernicus last month stated it was very likely (80 per cent chance) that Earth's annual average temperatures would at least temporarily exceed the 1.5C mark during the next five years.

The severe heatwave and its effects were on full display during the Haj pilgrimage last month when reports stated that more than 1,000 people had died due to heat-related illnesses.

The world's oldest mummies in Chile face the threat of decomposition due to climate change. These ancient relics are even older than the Egyptian mummies of pharaohs and their decorated tombs.

According to Bernando Arriaza, a professor at the University of Tarapaca, the ancient Chincorro people who lived in the Atacama Desert of Chile started mummifying their dead around 5,000 years ago, while the Egyptians began much later in about 2600 BCE.

Since then, the desert has preserved the mummies and other ancient remains and has given significant information about the Chincorro people to archaeologists.

According to archaeologists, the idea of preserving bodies as mummies came from observing the natural process the dead went through under the dry conditions of the desert. The mummies were also adorned with clay masks, reed blankets, human hair and other articles.

The desert region has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO to help save the relics, however, it might not be enough. While there are many museums in the ancient city of Arica which display the relics from Chincorro culture in climate-controlled exhibits, the remaining antiques that are still buried in the arid desert are at risk.

"If we have an increase in sea surface temperatures, for example, across the coast of northern Chile, that would increase atmospheric humidity," said Claudio LaTorre, a paleo-ecologist at the Catholic University of Chile. "And that in turn would generate decomposition, (in) places where you don't have decomposition today, and you would lose the mummies themselves."

Other ancient clues in the region that archaeologists could find may also be lost.

"Human-induced climate change is one aspect that we're really worried about, because it'll change a number of different aspects that are forming the desert today," said LaTorre.

Arriaza has been advocating the preservation of mummies and has been working to raise awareness on the matter.

"It's a big, big challenge because you need to have resources," Arriaza said. "It's everybody's effort to a common goal, to preserve the site, to preserve the mummies."

Mexico braces for destruction as 'deadly' hurricane Beryl heads towards it with 130 mph winds

As Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party reaches a new height of popularity, a report has revealed the increasingly indifferent attitude of its members and candidates towards human-induced climate change. An analysis by the Guardian showed at least 30 party candidates have supported theories about the World Economic Forum pushing a “climate change narrative” and have dismissed climate concerns as mere “hoax” or “scam”.

Over the last two years, the candidates posted materials disputing human-induced warming. The more concerning part is that some of the candidates are projected to win the upcoming elections.

Similar views peddled at official events

A similar narrative has been peddled at official party events. For instance, the party chief Richard Tice in June claimed it was 'ludicrous' to think that the UK's decarbonisation will help mitigate the global climate crisis.

The party has officially declared it will eliminate the UK's net-zero commitments if it emerges victorious.

Experts say Reform UK's party is adhering to 'a scientifically illiterate approach' that is backed by candidates 'not credible.'

“This is a scientifically illiterate approach. People across the country are suffering from climate change and these candidates are not suitable to represent them. These are not credible candidates,” Bob Ward, the policy and communications director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics, was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

Similar views peddled at official events A similar narrative has been peddled at official party events. For instance, the party chief Richard Tice in June claimed it was 'ludicrous' to think that the UK's decarbonisation will help mitigate the global climate crisis. The party has officially declared it will eliminate the UK's net-zero commitments if it emerges victorious. Lee Anderson, who is Reform UK's only lawmaker at the moment, has vowed support to coal as a “sustainable” energy source and declared that only “odd weirdos” care about decarbonisation.
