In an era marked by environmental challenges, the concept of eco-anxiety has emerged as an overwhelming toll on our hearts and minds.

Eco-Anxiety: The silent struggle

As people around the world grapple with environmental issues causing climate crisis, ranging from pollution, deforestation, forest fires and heat waves, there has emerged a profound sense of worry and helplessness.

This in many cases leads to a new form of psychological distress, for which experts have coined the term: "Eco-Anxiety".

The American Psychological Association (APA) recognises it as a "chronic fear of environmental doom".

The term encapsulates the psychological impact of ecological concerns faced by individuals as they witness the degradation of our environment and see its visible effects like smog-blanketed skies — daily reminders of the challenges our planet and we face.

Pollution and mental health

Recently, the Indian capital New Delhi has been living under a blanket of toxic air, which has made it hard for people to breathe.

There were days when the AQI (Air Quality Index) levels plummeted to a hazardous level of up to 999 in some areas. Naturally, this gave rise to a number of health problems. While many landed in hospitals, others battled a silent enemy.

Recent research has also shed light on the connection between pollution and mental health. Studies indicate that exposure to air pollution can contribute to an increased risk of mental health issues.

Talking to WION, Shannon Olsson, a chemical ecologist with over 20 years of experience said that for Delhi, the well-known pollution causes like vehicular emissions, stubble burning etc "come together in (a) perfect storm to create these incredibly high pollution levels which are really a little hard to comprehend even when you're in Delhi".

A sense of helplessness

Olsson, who is the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV) Special Scientific Envoy to India, said that natural disasters, coupled with wars and the many crises lead to a "helplessness that you feel as an individual".

"You feel like, what can I possibly do to try to control this? It feels like you have very little control and that produces obviously a fear because also these things are dangerous."

Olsson, the Founder and Global Director at the echo network says that eco-anxiety can manifest helplessness similar to what one feels when "they've lost a loved one or lost a job," which then "causes huge anxiety" especially among "children and our youth who are growing up in these environments where they feel very, very insecure about their own futures."

This sense of helplessness is also felt by parents.

Talking to WION, Neha Sonawane, a lawyer and a new mother, summed up the eco-anxiety felt by parents in one line: "As I started on this journey of parenthood, it is mostly this feeling of overwhelming sense of responsibility for the world".

"I don't know how much my small footprint matters in this larger carbon footprint, but I can try and I can hope that I teach my child a kind, more sustainable method of living," she added.

How to deal with eco-anxiety?

Like any other mental health concern, seeking professional help is a must. Along with that, it takes effort.

"Anything like air pollution, it can't be dealt with by one person, it requires a concerted effort and I think this is one of the major limiting factors," says Olsson.

Living sustainably is another way.

"There are lots of ways that we can reduce our impact on the environment by reusing items by reducing our usage of things like plastic by trying to walk as much as possible by trying to reduce or trying to take public transport as it's available to us."

"There's many things that we can do and there's lots of alternatives coming out all the time so just keeping our minds open to what is available to us. And there's lots of cool startups in India right now that are doing really great things, really wonderful, sustainable things that helps me a lot because it helps me to know that there are really wonderful people doing great things and that reduces my anxiety by just seeing that light in other people," she adds.

However, as per Olsson, all is not bad.

"As a scientist I can tell you if you look at the statistics, the world is actually getting better. Overall, people are living better, things are getting better. The world is actually not as bad as it seems. We just have to keep that hope and keep trying."

"So the important thing I say is, do not give up, do not just sit down and say there's nothing, the world is ending. Because it's not."

The devastating landslides which struck Kerala's Wayanad were triggered by incessant rainfall which was 10 per cent more intense due to climate change, according to a new study by the scientists from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group.

The region recorded more than 140 mm of rain in a single day on highly soaked soils due to monsoon rainfall for two months. This triggered devastating landslides and floods claiming at least 231 lives in Wayanad, the researchers said.

"The rainfall that triggered the landslides occurred in a region of Wayanad that has the highest landslide risk in the state. Even heavier downpours are expected as the climate warms, which underscores the urgency to prepare for similar landslides in northern Kerala," said Maja Vahlberg, a climate risk consultant at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.

The team of 24 scientists from India, the US, the UK, and Sweden examined climate models with high resolutions to reflect the rainfall activity in the Wayanad region for calculating the influence of humans on climate change.

The models suggest that climate change caused a 10 per cent increase in the intensity of the rainfall, they said. The models also forecast a further four per cent increase in the intensity of rainfall if there is a rise in the world's average temperature by two degrees Celsius.

However, a "high level of uncertainty" revolves around the research model as the region of study is small and mountainous with complicated dynamics of rainfall and climate.

According to scientists, events of this severity are likely to become more common in India and the rest of the world as the climate becomes warmer and warmer. In warmer temperatures air carries more moisture which leads to such heavy downpours in a single day.

Scientists have warned that a rare phenomenon witnessed in Antarctica might become common in the coming years because of climate change. A NASA photo shows eerie streaks of ice stretching across a narrow ocean channel in the continent. A combination of high winds and unusual ocean currents triggered the ice formation, LiveScience reported.

These ice streaks spanned an area of six kilometres in the channel of seawater between a massive, white ice sheet attached to Antarctica's mainland, known as the Ronne Ice Shelf, and a patch of fragmenting sea ice that is grey in colour towards the edges. Ronne Ice Shelf is and is known to give birth to some of the world's biggest icebergs.

According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), these ice streaks are made up of nilas, a type of super-thin ice that is less than four inches (10 centimetres) thick.

Nilas is formed when loose ice crystals merge into fragile sheets across a still surface. But in this case, NASA's Earth Observatory says that unusual whirlpool currents were created by high winds on the ocean's surface, stopping the sheet ice from forming. The nilas ice gathered at the currents' centres and was blown across the water.

The nilas ice after accumulating along the edge of sea ice appears pale blue in the photo. However, experts say this is unusual for nilas ice to be blue and only glaciers and sea ice appear blue because of being extremely dense.

Winds can easily move around thinner and more fragile sea ice, and so as the climate continues to warm, these icy streaks will make more appearances in the future.

Former US President Donald Trump has once again dismissed the threat of climate change, saying that rising sea levels would lead to more oceanfront properties being developed.

Trump was speaking to Elon Musk on Monday (Aug 12) on X (formerly Twitter) when he made the rather bizarre comment which reiterated his campaign policy regarding climate change.

"The biggest threat is not global warming, where the ocean is going to rise one-eighth of an inch over the next 400 years," Trump told Musk.

"You'll have more oceanfront property, right? The biggest threat is not that. The biggest threat is nuclear warming, because we have five countries now that have significant nuclear power, and we have to not allow anything to happen with stupid people like Biden."

It is not the first instance when Trump has sidestepped the conversation around global warming. After the first presidential debate, Trump criticised Joe Biden for the latter's claim that the "only existential threat to humanity is climate change".

“He [Biden] said it again last night, that global warming is an existential threat. And I say that the thing that’s an existential threat is not global warming, where the ocean will rise – maybe, it may go down, also – but it may rise one-eighth of an inch in the next 497 years, they say. One-eighth," said Trump at a rally in Virginia.

What does data suggest?

However, Trump's claims were quickly debunked as NASA reported earlier this year that the current global average sea level rise in 2023 was 0.17 inches per year - more than double the rate in 1993.

"The total rise is equivalent to draining a quarter of Lake Superior into the ocean over the course of a year," NASA said.

Simply put, sea level rise was already more than an eighth of an inch annually and was accelerating, NASA added. Notably, the NASA-led analysis is based on a sea level dataset featuring more than 30 years of satellite observations.

A brief respite from record-breaking heat in July hasn't changed the alarming trajectory: 2024 is increasingly poised to be the hottest year in history, according to the EU's climate service.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) stated last month was the second warmest on record books going back to 1940, only slightly cooler than July 2023.

Between June 2023 and June 2024, every month eclipsed its own temperature record for the time of the year.

"The streak of record temperatures has come to a close, but by the slimmest of margins," said Samantha Burgess, deputy director of C3S.

Notably, last month the global average temperature was 16.91 degrees Celsius, only 0.04C below July 2023, according to C3S's monthly bulletin.

But "the overall situation hasn't changed, climate crisis is deepening," said Burgess.

"The devastating effects of climate change started well before 2023 and will continue until global greenhouse gas emissions reach net zero," she further said.

As recorded from January to July global temperatures were 0.70C above the 1991-2020 average.

This irregularity would need to drop considerably for the remaining year for 2024 not to be hotter than 2023 -- "making it increasingly likely that 2024 is going to be the warmest year on record", said C3S.

It may be mentioned here, July 2024 was 1.48C warmer than the estimated average temperatures for the month during the period 1850-1900, before the world started to swiftly burn fossil fuels.

This has resulted in unbearable heat for hundreds of millions of people.

The ground temperature across ice sheet-Antarctica soared at an average of 10 degree Celsius above normal over the past month. The concerning and rare phenomenon is being described as a near record heatwave at one of world’s coldest places.

The world experienced 12 months of record warmth, with temperatures consistently exceeding the 1.5 degree Celsius rise above preindustrial levels that has been touted as the limit to avoiding the worst of climate overhaul.

While on the polar land mass, temperatures have remained below zero, the depths of southern hemisphere winter have reportedly reached 28 degrees Celsius above expectations on some days.

Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, said Antarctica’s heatwave had “definitely been one of the bigger drivers in the spike of global temperatures in recent weeks”.

“Antarctica as a whole has warmed along with the world over the past 50 years, and for that matter 150 years, so any heatwave is starting off from that elevated baseline,” he said and added, “But it’s safe to say that the majority of the spike in the last month was driven by the heatwave.”

This climate phenomenon has led to warming around the world in combination with the general increase in temperatures caused by climate breakdown, Dukes said.

The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) on Wednesday proposed new guidance that would mandate companies to better capture the impact of climate change on financial performance. It hopes to improve stand-alone disclosures—investors argue these lack clarity for informed decision-making.

Their norms are already applied by the listed companies in more than 140 jurisdictions including the European Union, Canada, Japan, and Britain. The United States has its own set of rules, though the proposed guidance may set a global precedent. The IASB has launched a consultation on the proposed guidance designed to better reflect climate change impacts in financial statements.

Currently, regulators have already begun to roll out sustainability disclosures for listed companies, but most of these disclosures are published separately from the financial statements, not being subject to rigorous auditing processes. The IASB proposal attempts to fill this gap with examples of how such sustainability commitments—net-zero carbon emissions goals and transition plans, impact a company's financial figures on assets, liabilities, income and expenses.

Investors have said they want to know whether assets will retain their value going forward as climate change impairs them, such as through flood damage.

"They expressed concerns that information about climate-related uncertainties in financial statements was sometimes insufficient or appeared to be inconsistent with information provided outside the financial statements," the IASB said in a statement.

Currently, companies dealing with oil and gas have already started addressing the impact of climate change by putting notes attached to their financial statements. It is this practice that the IASB intends to standardise among all industry players by ensuring that all companies give a succinct account of how climate-related uncertainties affect their financial performance.

The IASB explains that the proposed guidelines aim to improve transparency and consistency in reporting so that investors have an easier time understanding how climate change issues bear on the financial health of a corporation. This could be expected to enhance investor confidence, leading to better decision-making in the markets for the attainment of a more sustainable financial system.

Forever chemicals, a group of dreaded pollutants, are being found in all kinds of places, even inside human wombs. But imagine a simple solution: A 100 per cent 'cleanup' using LED lights. Is that even possible?

If an experiment made by scientists in Japan is an indication, LED light exposure along with a cocktail of chemicals can isolate, separate and remove the dangerous parts in forever chemicals, scientifically called Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS.

The researchers reportedly managed to 'clean up' the forever chemicals at room temperature, and that too overnight, or just eight hours to be precise.

Cleaning up forever chemicals with LED: How it works

For the experiment, researchers at Japan’s Ritsumeikan University used a mixture made of cadmium sulfide nanocrystals, triethanolamine and water. The forever chemicals were then put into this mixture, and exposed to LED lights of 405-nanometer wavelength, burning at around 100 degrees Fahrenheit temperature.

The PFAS used in this experiment were perfluorooctanesulfonate or PFOS.

The aim was to start a photocatalytic reaction that eventually breaks down and separates the fluorine irons of the forever chemicals. The experiment proved to be a success, as per a report in New Atlas.

Not only was the separation and removal of these pollutants done, but the chemical process also freed up some parts of the dreaded PFAS that can be put to good use. These are fluorine ions, which can be used for industrial products.

What are 'forever chemicals or PFAS'?

PFAS is the name given to a bunch of chemicals that are resistant to water and extreme heat.

This is possible because of the presence of carbon-fluorine bonds in them.

While they are used in a number of products like water-proof cloths, non-stick cookware and foam used by firefighters, their very resilient qualities also make them dangerous. They are resistant to heat and would require at least 400 degrees Fahrenheit to burn. This makes their disposal near-impossible. PFAS are generally buried in landfills to prevent their further exposure.

Once ingested, they can stay in the human body 'forever', hence the name forever chemicals.

Earth's oceans have been boiling up off-late... With 2023 going down as the warmest year on record. Sea temperatures have been soaring due to the excessive heat caused by human related activities. The last decade was recorded as the warmest for the oceans in over two centuries.

Climate Change: 2023 declared as warmest year for oceans

A team of researchers has been exploring the climate impact of the massive 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (Hunga Tonga volcano) eruption, which is said to have even caused an extraordinarily large ozone hole. It was initially speculated that the volcano might have accounted for the extreme global warmth in 2023 and 2024, however, new research suggests that the underwater volcano might not have even been that bad.

The findings of the research, published on Wednesday (Jul 24) in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, revealed that the eruption actually contributed to cooling the Earth.

The team of researchers, consisting of Texas A&M University atmospheric scientist Dr Andrew Dessler and several others, analysed the challenging existing assumptions about the effects of the volcano.

Analysis and insights of Dessler, who is a professor in the Texas A&M Department of Atmospheric Sciences and the director of the Texas Center for Climate Studies, were published in the paper, titled "Evolution of the Climate Forcing During the Two Years after the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai Eruption".

The dramatic explosion of the Hunga Tonga volcano was seen in satellite images as the eruption sent massive smoke and ash into the air. It sent tsunami waves across the Pacific and caused damages, knocking out communications for the nation of about 105,000 people.

The eruption sent an unparalleled volume of water vapour into the stratosphere, raising the overall water content of the stratosphere by almost 10 per cent.

As reported by phys.org, Dessler noted that it was believed that water vapour, which is a potent greenhouse gas, could be responsible for the dramatic global warming that occurred in 2023 and 2024.

However, the analysis revealed that the eruption caused the climate system to lose more energy than it gained, which is what caused the minor cooling effect.

"Our paper pours cold water on the explanation that the eruption caused the extreme warmth of 2023 and 2024. Instead, we need to focus primarily on greenhouse gases from human activities as the main cause of the warming, with a big assist from the ongoing El Niño," Dessler explained as quoted.
