China is likely to slash imports of low-grade coal from Indonesia this year, dealing a blow to one of its key suppliers as weak domestic demand, surging output, and climate goals reshape the world’s biggest coal market.Indonesian coal, particularly lignite or brown coal, has been a staple of China’s thermal coal mix over the past few years. But this trade is now being undercut by collapsing prices and shifting policy priorities in Beijing.&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;reported that Li Xuegang, a senior official at the China Coal Transportation and Distribution Association, said at the Coaltrans China conference in Beijing that the country’s tighter emissions rules would “slash demand for low-heating and poor-quality grades”.“Imports of low-calorie coal are no longer economically viable given the current price levels and China’s domestic supply,” said Li, warning that the fall in overall coal imports in 2025 could be steeper than expected, possibly dropping by 50 to 100 million tonnes compared to 2024’s record 543 million tonnes.<h2>Why is Indonesian coal in the firing line?</h2>Indonesia, one of China’s top overseas coal suppliers, is particularly vulnerable to the shift. The bulk of its exports to China are lignite, a highly polluting, low-energy fuel that’s now under scrutiny as China doubles down on decarbonisation.Chinese utilities had long blended Indonesian lignite with higher-grade coal to power thermal plants, but this practice is losing favour.&nbsp;China’s domestic coal production surged to 4.7 billion tonnes in 2024. Over the first four months of 2025, China produced 1.58 billion tonnes of coal, which was 6.6 per cent higher than the output booked for the same period a year earlier. In April alone, China produced 3.8 per cent more coal than a year ago, at 389.31 million tonnes.With stockpiles swelling and renewables taking a growing share of the electricity mix, utilities now have easier access to higher-quality domestic or imported alternatives.In May, China’s coal imports dropped for the third consecutive month, falling to 36.04 million tonnes from 43.82 million tonnes in April. Cumulative imports for the first five months of 2025 are down 8 per cent year-on-year, official data shows. This trend is expected to accelerate in the latter half of the year.<h2>China’s broader energy landscape</h2>China’s coal policy is now walking a tightrope between energy security and climate commitments. After being hit by power shortages earlier this decade, Beijing approved a wave of new coal power projects to stabilise its grid.&nbsp;Yet, even as approvals rose again in 2025, thermal power output fell 4 per cent in the first four months, with wind and solar stepping up to meet rising electricity demand.Renewables now account for 26 per cent of China’s power output, while coal’s share dipped to a record low of 54 per cent in April, according to energy think tank Ember. China has announced its willingness to establish a ‘green channel’ to expedite export licences for rare earth shipments to the European Union (EU), in a move aimed at alleviating severe supply chain disruptions across European industries.The announcement follows mounting criticism from European businesses and officials who say China’s licensing regime, imposed in April, has led to costly production delays in critical sectors such as electric vehicles, aerospace, and semiconductors.According to a statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce released on June 7, qualified EU firms could benefit from faster approvals under the proposed mechanism. Commerce Minister Wang Wentao conveyed this willingness during a meeting with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic in Paris last week."China attaches great importance to Europe's concerns and is willing to establish a green channel for eligible applications, fast-track the examination and approval, and instruct the working level to maintain timely communication," the ministry stated in the release.The Chinese government has maintained that its rare earth export controls are in line with international practices, particularly in response to Western export bans on advanced technology products to China.However, business groups such as the European Union Chamber of Commerce have warned that the current system lacks transparency and is hampering operations.<h2>Brandy, EVs, and bilateral bargaining</h2>The rare earth issue is just one of several flashpoints in the growing economic tensions between China and the EU. Another contentious topic is the ongoing trade investigation into European brandy imports, particularly French cognac, on which China had imposed tariffs of up to 39 per cent, interpreted widely as retaliation for the EU’s tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs).France’s President Emmanuel Macron publicly criticised the move, calling it “pure retaliation”. China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that it would deliver a final decision on the brandy duties by July 5. It added that French producers and associations had submitted applications on price commitments and that the two sides had reached a consensus on core terms, pending final review.Meanwhile, consultations over a price commitment mechanism for Chinese EV exports to Europe have reached an “advanced stage”, although both sides have acknowledged that further effort is needed.The European Commission has suggested setting minimum prices for Chinese-made EVs instead of imposing outright tariffs, a proposal Beijing is evaluating along with possible new technical cooperation in the electric mobility sector.<h2>Pressure from the US and global backlash</h2>The EU is not alone in its concerns. The United States has also raised alarms about the implications of China’s rare earth controls. Following a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, both countries agreed to resume trade talks in London, though no clear commitments were made regarding the rare earths issue.While China has issued more export licences in recent days, American and European industry leaders say the pace remains too slow and supply chains remain vulnerable.Chinese companies are reportedly hesitant to apply for large-volume export licences, especially for shipments that could end up with US military contractors, amid growing national security concerns.Beijing’s strategic use of rare earths as leverage has triggered broader concerns among Western policymakers.<h2>Cooperation or confrontation?</h2>The next few weeks may prove pivotal. China is set to host a summit with the EU next month, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations with Brussels. While the rare earth green channel signals a potential thaw in trade relations, the broader dynamics of technology restrictions, reciprocal tariffs, and geopolitical distrust remain unresolved.As discussions continue, both sides appear to be balancing the need for cooperation against the realities of a rapidly fracturing global trade environment. Whether the latest moves by Beijing will be enough to rebuild trust and prevent further escalation remains to be seen.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is carrying out a purge campaign in the military, yet again. According to media reports, a top military official has been suspended and placed under&nbsp;investigation in China following “serious violations of discipline”. According to China’s defence ministry, Admiral Miao Hua is a member of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC), China’s top military body led by Xi.

Miao Hua had been seen as an official very close to the Chinese president, rising up in the ranks since the 1990s when Xi used to hold a local office in the coastal province of Fujian.

The Chinese leader, who secured a precedent-breaking third term in office in March last year, has waged a massive purge campaign in the military since last year.

The purge especially focused on the People’s Liberation Army’s elite rocket force, which oversees the country’s nuclear and conventional missiles. This campaign led to the downfall of several senior generals, including former defence minister Li Shangfu and his predecessor Wei Fenghe.

The government says the action against the two ministers was taken to maintain discipline and make China’s armed forces stronger, more combat-ready and more aggressive in asserting its disputed territorial claims in the region.

China has freed three&nbsp;Americans&nbsp;considered wrongfully detained in a swap with the United States, US officials said Wednesday, meeting a key goal of outgoing President Joe Biden's administration.

The three&nbsp;Americans&nbsp;–&nbsp;Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung –&nbsp;were the last prisoners in China classified by the State Department as wrongfully detained, although activists and families have raised the cases of other US citizens.

"Soon they will return and be reunited with their families for the first time in many years," a State Department spokesperson said on the eve of Thanksgiving, the American holiday associated with family reunions.

"Thanks to this administration's efforts and diplomacy with the PRC, all of the wrongfully detained&nbsp;Americans&nbsp;in the PRC are home," the spokesperson said, referring to the People's Republic of China.

A source close to the matter said that the three were being freed in a swap with Beijing for three Chinese nationals in US custody who were not identified.

Swidan was detained in late 2012 on a business trip to China on drug charges. His family and supporters say there was never any evidence he had drugs and that his driver and translator had blamed him.

In his early time in detention, Swidan was deprived of sleep and food and lost more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), according to Dui Hua, a group that supports prisoners in China.

Swidan's mother Katherine, who lives in Texas, addressed a congressional hearing in September and accused the Biden administration of ignoring his plight.&nbsp;

"Our loved ones are not bargaining chips or political pawns; they are human beings whose rights and freedoms must be upheld and protected," she said.

Kai Li, a naturalized American born in Shanghai who ran a business exporting aircraft technology, was detained in 2016 and convicted of espionage for allegedly sending state secrets to US authorities.&nbsp;

He says he was sharing information routinely available on the internet as part of routine compliance with US export regulations.&nbsp;

Leung, a US citizen in his late 70s with permanent residency in Hong Kong, was also convicted of espionage. China said little about his case when he was first detained in 2021 but later accused him of spying on Chinese officials on behalf of the United States.

<h2>Engagement with China</h2>

In September, the United States secured the release of another American considered wrongfully detained -- David Lin, a pastor who had been jailed since 2006.

US officials later acknowledged that the release was part of a swap for a Chinese national following quiet diplomacy.

The approach is in sharp contrast to prisoner exchanges with Russia, in which Biden and President Vladimir Putin have personally greeted returning citizens at the airport.

The US prisoners in China have drawn comparatively less attention, although US lawmakers have been repeatedly raised their cases and the Biden administration insisted they remained a priority.

With the latest three, the outgoing administration has secured the release of more than 70 unjustly detained&nbsp;Americans&nbsp;around the world, officials said.

Biden most recently raised the prisoners' case personally with President Xi Jinping during their final meeting this month on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Peru, officials said.

Observers say that China has sought to show that, if the United States engages, it is willing to work constructively on certain areas of concern.

The Biden administration also says that China has taken action against producers of the precursor chemicals to fentanyl, the synthetic painkiller behind an overdose pandemic in the United States that has begun to decline.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed a more confrontational approach and said on social media this week that he would immediately impose big tariffs on products from China, as well as US neighbours Mexico and Canada.

Both the Biden and Trump teams have described China as the most significant long-term adversary of the United States, but Biden has also emphasized the value of engagement.

China is cracking down on ‘uncivilised language’, puns, and homophones online, prompting concerns that it could erode whatever room is available to the citizens for discussing sensitive topics without attracting any penalty. The Cyberspace Administration of China and the ministry of education announced earlier this month that they were launching the “clear and bright” campaign in order to target “irregular and uncivilised” language.

It could mean that puns, memes, satires, jokes and wordplay may no longer be allowed on Chinese internet, something that Chinese netizens employ to discuss taboo topics such as Tiananmen massacre or criticism of President Xi Jinping.

Earlier, an editorial by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) said the jargons and memes were causing too much confusion online. “For some time, various internet jargons and memes have appeared frequently, leaving people more and more confused,” read the editorial. “They also form a hidden erosion on the daily communication and ideological values of minors, which can easily lead to adverse consequences,” it added, while making a case for the forthcoming restrictions.

Chinese internet is heavily regulated and monitored, where discussions targeting any individual, especially the CCP leaders, are censored and muted. For example, people would use the word “paratrooper” (sǎn bīng) instead of “idiot” (shǎ bī) and more words that sound very similar in Mandarin but were written with different Chinese characters.

A Chinese state-owned enterprise on Tuesday successfully placed 18 satellites into orbit, state broadcaster CCTV reported, as China seeks to create its own version of US&nbsp;firm SpaceX's Starlink network.

The launch of the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites by Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology (SSST) took place at Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in the northern Shanxi province.

The satellites were carried aboard a Long March 6 rocket and represent the first batch in SSST's "Thousand Sails Constellation" plan, CCTV reported.

The state-backed plan is one of China's answers to Starlink, SpaceX's growing commercial broadband constellation that has about 5,500 LEO satellites in space to provide near-global internet to consumers, companies and government agencies.

Starlink is a subsidiary of U.S. entrepreneur Elon Musk's SpaceX space company.

LEO satellites usually operate at altitudes of 300km to 2,000km from the Earth's surface and have the advantage of being cheaper and providing more efficient transmission than satellites at higher orbits.

Control over the satellites that occupy these altitudes has significant military implications.

Since 2022, when the Ukraine war demonstrated the importance of Starlink to battlefield communications, media affiliated with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) have published several editorials about the threat Starlink poses to China's interests.

These editorials have described Starlink and SpaceX as part of the "space hegemony" the United States is trying to create in space, giving it a "unilateral space military advantage".

China's Civil Affairs University announced a new undergraduate marriage program to develop marriage-related industries and culture, drawing scorn of social media users who questioned the need for such a course as marriage rates decline.

With the program due to start in September, the Beijing-based institution aims to "cultivate professionals to develop marriage related industries and culture", state media reported this week.

Policymakers are struggling to reverse the fall in new births, which are closely linked to marriage rates, after China's population fell for a second consecutive year in 2023.

Marriage is seen as a prerequisite for having children due to widespread policies, including one that requires parents to present a marriage certificate to register the baby and receive benefits. Single women and LGBTQ couples are not entitled to the same rights.

Faced with a rapidly ageing population and a pension crisis, China plans to increase its extremely low retirement age, allowing people to work longer.

Presently, men in urban areas can retire at 60 and are eligible to receive a pension from state-backed funds.

While the retirement age for female urban workers is 50 or 55 depending on their occupation.

However, the rural residents in China fall under a different retirement system.

The announcement of Beijing's plans to raise the retirement age on Sunday (Jul&nbsp;21) has provoked strong criticism.

“In accord with the principles of voluntariness and flexibility, we will gradually and systematically advance the reform of progressively delaying the legal retirement age,” China’s ruling Communist Party said on Sunday.

Notably, the plan, together with crucial reforms, was officially released in a resolution which was issued three days after the conclusion of China's third plenum—a significant political conference held every five years in Beijing.

The country already struggling with a declining birth rate and an ageing population, and the policymakers have been discussing increasing the retirement age for over a decade.

At the 2013 plenum, a top decision-making body of the Communist Party said that it is now essential to come up with a policy to delay the retirement age.&nbsp;

Though the government did not officially announce any details over the weekend, however, according to a report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences released in December last year, a top government think tank estimated that the retirement age will be revised to 65 years.

Interestingly, in 2019, the same think tank predicted that China’s state pension fund would run dry by 2035 because of its declining workforce.&nbsp;

It may be mentioned here, that in early 2023, widespread protests erupted in several major urban centres as elderly residents rallied against significant reductions in their medical benefits.

Driven by concerns that local authorities were raiding their personal pension accounts to address state pension fund deficits, retirees expressed their outrage.

Delayed retirements: China's answer to pension woes

A 'love guru' has gone viral in China for teaching women how to make financial gains through marriage. South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Qu Qu's annual earnings have shot up to $19.5 million as women are increasingly seeking her relationship and financial advice through social media platforms. But many have criticised the love guru for encouraging unethical or manipulative behaviour in a supposedly romantic setup.

During her teachings, Qu Qu uses several code words where she refers to being married as "inside the fortress", money as "rice", and pregnancy as "carrying a ball". In viral videos, the guru can be heard brazenly saying that marriages should be used to become rich and gain financial advantages.

"All relationships are essentially about benefit exchanges. Everything should be used to boost my advantage and empower me," she says.

Chinese love guru becomes millionaire by teaching women how to marry rich

Senior citizens sway to old-time tunes at a former kindergarten in northern China, as educators turn their sights away from children in the face of a rapidly ageing population and a baby bust.

Hundreds of millions of Chinese are set to enter old age in the coming decades while the country's chronically low birth rate leaves ever fewer people to replace them, official statistics show.

The crisis is already hitting the education sector, with thousands of preschools closing around the country as enrollments dry up.

But others are changing with the times -- such as a facility in Shanxi province, which has traded chortling children for a more mature cohort.

"(The problem) became particularly evident as the number of children continued to decrease," principal Li Xiuling, 56, told AFP.

"After my kindergarten emptied out, I thought about how to make the best use of it," she said.

Li's preschool was founded in 2005 and once served as many as 280 children, but closed last year.

It reopened in December as Impressions of Youth, a recreational centre for people of retirement age and above.

The space in the provincial capital Taiyuan boasts around 100 adult learners of music, dance, modelling and other subjects.

"It's quite a progressive idea," Li said. "They come to fulfil some of the dreams they had when they were young."

On a rainy morning this month, a modelling instructor led a line of immaculately coiffed older women as they sashayed around the classroom in traditional cheongsam dresses and pink oil-paper parasols.

In another class, students sat in a semicircle beating African drums in time to soaring socialist songs.

He Ying, 63, said joining the centre had helped her overcome a post-retirement lack of confidence and meet new friends.

"I used to feel that my cultural life...was very impoverished, that there wasn't much meaning in going on living," she told AFP.

"(People here) are not just waiting to grow old."

Nearly 15,000 kindergartens closed in China last year as enrollments plunged by 5.3 million compared to 2022, according to government data.

In dusty, industrial Shanxi –- where the overall population is falling –- there were 78,000 more deaths than births last year.

The centre bears traces of its past, with bunkbeds and dinky writing desks lining the colourfully decorated walls of former classrooms.

For Yan Xi, who used to teach at the kindergarten but now leads classes for retirees, the shift has taken some getting used to.

"Little kids just believe whatever you say, but the elderly... have their own ways," she said.

"I have to think harder about how to communicate with them," Yan told AFP.

Several other facilities across China have found success by pivoting from preschool to senior education, according to local news reports.

Student Sun Linzhi, 56, said they met "a need for universities for the elderly".

Since joining the centre in Taiyuan, "I feel like I'm young again," she told AFP.

China saw a significant rise in the senior population last year, adding nearly 17 million people aged 60 and above, according to official statistics.

That age group already makes up more than 20 per cent of the population, a proportion that is expected to rise to nearly a third by 2035, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, a research group.

Beijing plans to introduce a "relatively sound" national elderly care system by 2025, but the country lacks nursing homes and faces wide regional disparities in coverage.

Top leaders will likely discuss the future of what they call the "silver economy" at a key economic meeting in the capital next week.

The government estimates that products and services catering to the elderly -- from senior-friendly tourism to technology-driven medical care -- could be worth 30 trillion yuan ($4.13 trillion) by 2035.

But it has struggled to revive the plummeting birth rate, a major driver of China's mismatched demographics.

Li, the principal, said she felt nostalgic for the days when her school teemed with boisterous kids.

"I was very emotionally invested in it," she said, gesturing towards the disused bunks and desks. "We kept those as a kind of memento."

Also read: UK general election sees lowest voter turnout since 1928: Report Student Sun Linzhi, 56, said they met "a need for universities for the elderly". "We kept those as a kind of memento." Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. China at present has a total of 339 gigawatts (GW) of capacity under construction, including 159 GW of wind and 180 GW of solar.

According to a study by Global Energy Monitor, a US-based NGO, this is "nearly twice as much as the rest of the world combined."&nbsp;

The report also indicated that this figure significantly surpasses that of the second-ranked nation, the United States, which is constructing only 40 GW.

China has broken ground on a third of the new wind and solar capacity it has announced to date, compared to a global average of just seven per cent, the report further said.

"The stark contrast in construction rates illustrates the active nature of China's commitment to building renewables projects," the study said.

<h2>'Turning point?</h2>

China's huge renewable energy buildout does have some drawbacks.

The national grid relies on heavily polluting coal plants to handle surges in power demand. Additionally, it faces challenges in transmitting renewable energy generated in the remote northwestern regions to the economic and population centres in the east.

However, China's combined wind and solar capacity is set to overtake coal this year, as per the report.

The speedy renewables expansion raises hopes that Beijing's carbon emissions will peak even sooner than expected.

In a separate report released on Thursday, the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) revealed that China did not issue any new permits for coal-based steelmaking projects in the first half of 2024.

CREA said that was the first time on a half-yearly basis that there have been no new permits since China announced its "dual carbon goals" in September 2020.

China's steel industry is poised for a green transformation. A peak in steel demand coupled with increasing scrap availability creates a prime opportunity to move away from polluting coal-based production. This shift could significantly reduce emissions over the next decade, according to a report by CREA.

Scientists say global warming makes extreme weather more frequent and intense.

China Customs said in a statement Tuesday (Jul 9) that the man was detained in the border city of Shenzhen and he was travelling from the semi-autonomous Hong Kong region. “Upon inspection, customs officers discovered that the pockets of the trousers the passenger was wearing were packed with six canvas drawstring bags and sealed with tape,” the statement read.

“Once opened, each bag was found to contain living snakes in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours,” it added.

According to the South China Morning Post, the incident took place last month when the father, who is from Yulin, an autonomous province in southern China, was making dinner and motioned for his daughter, Guangxi Zhuang, to join him at the dining table. The unidentified man noticed that his daughter nicknamed, Jiajia, was so engrossed in a television show that she had not heard him. He then turned off the television in rage which made the daughter start crying. "You can watch TV again when your tears fill this bowl," he stated, giving her a large empty bowl. In the video, shot and shared by the girl's mother, the little child can be seen gathering her tears in a bowl beneath her face and trying to squeeze her eyes further. After holding the bowl for more than ten seconds, she told her parents that her hands were tired and that she couldn't do the task. Her father then asked her to smile for him. According to the mother, the sight of the girl giggling with tears on her face pleased her parents. With 220,000 likes on Douyin alone, the video of the crying girl became viral on Chinese mainland's social media. While many people thought Jiajia was a lovely child, others criticised her father. It was a dream wedding, complete with picturesque outdoor setting, white lace gown and a delectable cake. The perfect day for golden retrievers - Bree and Bond - to tie the knot in front of their closest human and canine friends.

Pet weddings are on the rise in China, where government policies have had little success in encouraging more humans to wed in this fast-ageing society where the population is declining and marriage and birth rates remain low.

The popularity of pets and an increasing willingness to splurge on them are driving the trend. Spending on furry companions in 2023 rose 3.2% to 279.3 billion yuan ($38.41 billion) from a year earlier, industry figures show.

Chinese people own a cat or a dog, with a majority of owners under 40, according to the research firm.

Ling and his girlfriend Gigi Chen, who said they're in no rush to get married themselves, meticulously planned the canine ceremony for months, arranging professional photographers, designing wedding booklets and ordering a custom-made, 800-yuan cake complete with toppers that resemble Bree and Bond.

Yang Tao, whose Shanghai-based pet bakery prepared the cake, said she was initially surprised that customers wanted wedding cakes for their dogs.

"I think there will be more and more dog weddings," Yang said, adding that she has already catered several similar ceremonies since her bakery was launched in 2022.

Ling said he hoped the ceremony would give Bree and Bond a "sense of ritual". Ling, who said he wanted only one child, also hopes to welcome puppies soon.

The Philippine military accused the Chinese coast guard of ramming and then boarding the Filipino boats in a violent confrontation in the contested waters of the South China sea on 17th of June. The Philippines' top military commander, General Romeo Brawner, said that the Chinese coast guard were armed with swords, spears and knives in the incident off Second Thomas shoal. Denouncing the Chinese action as piracy, he demanded the return of seized weapons and other equipment, as well as reparations for damaged items. Beijing described the conduct of its personnel as professional and restrained, further adding that they were aiming to block an illegal transportation of supplies. Monday's incident is the latest in a series of escalating confrontations between Chinese and Philippine ships in recent months.

Sugar glider sneaks out from hand baggage on Chinese flight causing chaos

Lawyers across China are up in arms over what they say&nbsp;is 'blatant sabotage'&nbsp;of the legal system as they stage a rare protest on Chinese social media.&nbsp;This&nbsp;happened after advocates at the Tianjun county court in Haixi&nbsp;Mongol&nbsp;caught the presiding judge red-handed receiving real-time instructions on WeChat group, a Chinese messaging app.

The lawyers posted a lengthy letter on X-like Chinese social media platform Weibo&nbsp;and explained&nbsp;in detail what transpired on May 11 in the court located in the northwestern province of Qinghai.

<h2>What happened in the courtroom?</h2>

As per the letter, the judge suddenly adjourned the proceedings in a case.&nbsp;

“Afterwards, we accidentally found the criminal court judge of the Haixi intermediate court and the director of the Tianjun county court were remotely giving instructions in a WeChat group,”&nbsp;the letter said.

As it happened, Liu Zheng of the Beijing Zebo Law Firm took a photo of the computer screen of the presiding judge, which laid bare the unofficial WeChat group that had several judicial officers and staff of local courts as its members.

The photo also captured some communication happening between the judge and his seniors.

County court director Fan Xuhua can&nbsp;be seen&nbsp;saying in the group chat:&nbsp;“You&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;have to communicate with him about it.”

The photo then shows Hasi Chaolu, president of the criminal court at Haixi Intermediate Court – the court that will hear the case if it&nbsp;is appealed—directing the presiding judge to&nbsp;“be tough,&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;speak randomly”.

“Their actions blatantly sabotage our legal system where the appeal&nbsp;court’s&nbsp;decision is the final one, and those involved should be probed for malpractice or even criminal activity,”&nbsp;the public letter said.

The lawyers also complained about the incident to the Qinghai Provincial Prosecutor’s office and the Qinghai Higher&nbsp;People’s&nbsp;Court. Both of them said they had opened an investigation into the case.

As per the letter, the lawyers have&nbsp;filed a request with the county court to&nbsp;transfer the case for trial outside of Haixi.

Responding to the incident, Xu Xin, a prominent lawyer in China, said on WeChat that such incidents were quite common in the communist country.
