Gandhi Sagar is about a six-hour drive from Kuno. It is spread across 368 square kilometres and has an additional 2,500 sq km area surrounding it.

The official quoted above also said the mother cheetahs and their cubs will not be released into the wild until weather conditions in the Kuno National Park improve.

Officials reported on Tuesday that Namibian cheetah Jwala gave birth to four cubs on 20 January. In early January, another Namibian cheetah, Asha, gave birth to three cubs.

This is Jwala's second litter and comes after a gap of 10 months.

The officials said that compared to other female cheetahs, Jwala is a wilder animal. She avoids humans and remains alert even when resting, a typical cheetah behaviour of remaining careful of bigger and stronger predators all the time.

The recent births have taken the number of cubs at the Kuno National Park to eight at present, with seven being born this month.

The total number of cheetahs at the Kuno National Park currently stands at 21 (six males, seven females and eight cubs).

While January recorded the birth of seven cubs, it also witnessed the death of Shaurya -- an adult Namibian cheetah -- on 16 January.

Officials said they do not know the reason for Shaurya's death as they have not yet received his post-mortem report.

Since last March, seven adult cheetahs, including Shaurya, have died due to various reasons.

The seven adult cheetahs -- three females and four males -- that died include Sasha, Uday, Daksha, Tejas, Suraj, Dhatri and Shaurya. The first six fatalities occurred in a six-month period between March and August 2023.

Jwala and Aasha are among the cheetahs translocated to India from Namibia under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Project Cheetah, aimed at re-introducing the only large carnivore species that went extinct in independent India.

For the cheetahs already in Kuno, he said the plan is to administer prophylactic medicine before the arrival of monsoon to prevent infection.

The increasing deaths of cheetahs in the Kuno National Park have escalated worries over Project Cheetah's future in India. The cubs were found to be weak, underweight and poorly hydrated, said officials. 
 
Speaking about their deaths, South African wildlife expert Vincent van der Merwe said that there will be an increase in the mortality rate of these cheetahs in the coming months amid their reintroduction, PTI reported. 
 
The expert added that there are chances of cheetahs' mortality rate increasing by 50 per cent in the first year. “We anticipate a 50 per cent mortality in the first year, we know that only 10 are going to survive the initial release period. There's going to be more than enough prey for them,” he added.

According to the expert, there will be more deaths as the big cats will make attempts to establish territories and in these efforts, they will encounter tigers and leopards inside the national park. 
 
He further added that the recent deaths of cheetahs have occurred within the acceptable range. However, he added that the killing of female cheetahs by males during mating was uncalled for.

<h2>What can India do to save cheetahs?</h2>

The wildlife expert stated that the habitats should be fenced so that access to resources by other animals can be controlled and the overall threat to these cheetahs can be reduced. 
 
He added that the reintroduction of cheetahs has never been successful in an unfenced reserve. Merwe further said that at least two to three cheetahs should be brought to Mukundra Hills where they can breed. 
 
"Mukundra Hills is fully fenced. We know that cheetahs will do very well there. The only problem is that it's not fully stocked at the moment. So you'll have to bring in some black buck and chinkara. And when the fencing is completed at Nauradehi and Gandhisagar, we will have three fenced reserves and then we are absolutely winning," he added.

Three cheetah cubs dead in India’s Kuno National Park, expert warns of higher mortality

In the Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh, a female cheetah named Daksha, who had been brought from South Africa, was killed during a fight with other cheetahs inside the park. As per PTI reports, Daksha was killed after a "violent interaction" with the Phinda adult male coalition, also known as the White Walkers, which included Vayu and Agni.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kuno has lost three cheetahs including Daksha, since the cats were brought from South Africa and Namibia.&nbsp;

Since last year, nine cheetahs have been introduced to the national park, of which two died in March and April.

A captive-bred cheetah named Sasha passed away in March from kidney failure that she had been suffering from ever since she was brought to India. She started showing signs of weakness and exhaustion on January 23, at which point authorities tranquillised her and sent her to a quarantine area where she would receive care.

The second Cheetah, Uday, was discovered sick in the national park in April and passed away while receiving treatment.

According to the ministry, the cheetahs would be permitted to leave KNP and won't necessarily be recaptured unless they venture into areas where they are in significant danger.

<h2>India's&nbsp;cheetah reintroduction operation</h2>

Four of the eight cheetahs that were brought over from Namibia have so far been freed from their caged acclimatisation camps and placed in the KNP's free-range habitat.

In September 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released eight cheetahs that had been brought in from Namibia into a special enclosure at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

As part of the cheetah reintroduction operation, the cheetahs were flown in a special jet from Namibia to Gwalior. Later, two Indian Air Force helicopters transported the animals to the national park.

In February, 12 additional cheetahs arrived in India from South Africa. The second group of cheetahs arrived at the Air Force base in Gwalior before being sent to Kuno National Park.

<h2>Cheetah went extinct in India in 1952</h2>

In the majority of countries, cheetah numbers are dropping. South Africa is an exception to this trend because there is no more space for the cats there.

These majestic animals, known as "the smallest of the big cats," can reportedly outrun the fastest Yamaha bike. Due to intensive poaching during the time before independence, they became extinct in India in 1952. In 1948, a cheetah was last seen in the Sal forests of Chhattisgarh's Koriya district.

Talking to the PTI news agency, J S Chauhan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Wildlife, revealed that "during the inspection in the morning, a cheetah (Uday) brought from South Africa was found dull with head down following which veterinarians attending him alerted senior officials and the feline was taken out from the large enclosure for treatment. Unfortunately, around 4 pm, the cheetah passed away."

While Uday's exact cause of death is yet to be identified, an official release said that the officials found him sluggish in his boma (enclosure) and a closer inspection revealed he was staggering.

"As per the inspection conducted on Saturday evening, Uday was found healthy. During inspection on Sunday morning, the medical team found that the cheetah was ailing. Following a due process, the cheetah was tranquilised on the advice of wildlife veterinarians and treatment was started at 11 AM," said the release.

The feline was kept in an isolation ward under the observation of wildlife veterinarians. His treatment started at 11 am and by 4 pm, the animal died. To find the exact cause of death, a postmortem will be conducted.

Sasha, another one of the eight Namibian cheetahs, aged more than four-and-a-half-years, died of a kidney ailment at KNP on March 27.

Uday, Sasha and six more cheetahs were brought to India under the nation's 'Project Cheetah'. The programme which was launched last September seeks to reintroduce the species, decades after it went extinct in the country. Under it, eight members of the species&nbsp;five females and three males were brought to the KNP, which has a core area of 748 sq km and a 487 sq km buffer zone surrounding it. On February 18 this year, 12 cheetahs, comprising seven males and five females, were brought to the KNP from South Africa.

Second of the eight felines brought to India under 'Project Cheetah' dies in Madhya Pradesh

A total of eight cheetahs were introduced to India from Namibia in September last year as part of the world's first inter-continental transfer of large wild carnivorous animals. It included five females and three males that were introduced at Kano National Park (KNP) in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

One of the these five female cheetahs died on Monday after developing a kidney infection in January. During a daily monitoring check, Sasha had displayed signs of weakness and exhaustion. A&nbsp;medical checkup found that she was dehydrated and had issues with her kidneys.

The historic Cheetah reintroduction excercise was part of India's goal to bring back cheetahs nearly 70 years after they became extinct. The creatures, however, are not Asiatic Cheetahs, as the nation formerly possessed. Instead, they are a distinct subspecies.

“Sadly, Sasha succumbed to renal failure. She was under the care of Project Cheetah veterinarians for a few months, so this was not unexpected. Kidney disease and renal failure are a problem for all cats, but this can be especially bad for cheetahs, which are by nature delicate creatures," said Dr Laurie Marker, Founder and Executive Director for Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF).

The cheetahs travelled from Namibia in a specially painted aircraft with a tiger’s face on it and the special Boeing 747 jet quickly became a sensation on social media. However, contrary to popular sentiment and some media reports, it was not painted for the occasion.&nbsp;

According to Newschecker, the plane was actually painted back in 2015 by Russian airline Transaero. The image on the plane was that of a Siberian Tiger and the purpose behind the painting was to increase awareness about the animals. The report further stated that the painting was a collaboration between the airlines and Amur Tiger Centre - an initiative signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.&nbsp;

The first appearance of the flight with the tiger painting on its nose came in June 2015 at the Moscow Vnukovo airport. However, as Transaero went bankrupt, the plane was sent to storage in Spain before it was purchased by Sharjah-based Aquiline International in 2021 and leased it to Terra Avia of Moldova.&nbsp;

As a result, it was either pure coincidence or a planned strategy to use the specific flight for the transfer of cheetahs to India but the reports that it was specially painted for the occasion were&nbsp;not true.&nbsp;

The other possible explanation, according to Newschecker, was that the cheetahs needed to be transported in a jumbo-sized passenger plane and this was one of the few available for that purpose.&nbsp;

The aircraft was arranged by Dubai-based Action Aviation for the project.&nbsp;
