Bayern Munich were at their clinical best as they blew RB Salzburg away in the UEFA Champions League round of 16-second leg on Tuesday, Robert Lewandowski scoring the first three of their seven goals.

If Bayern were somewhat subdued during their 1-1 draw in Austria in the first leg, they were anything but in this Munich return at Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski, not for the first time, spearheaded the goal glut for Julian Nagelsmann's men, converting two penalties after being felled by Maximilian Wober twice then blocking a clearance from goalkeeper Philipp Kohn and tapping in to seal a quickfire hat-trick inside 23 minutes.

Serge Gnabry all but rubber-stamped Bayern's place in the last eight with a fourth goal before half-time but there was no let-up after the break.

Thomas Muller gleefully helped himself to two goals, either side of Maurits Kjaergaard's excellent consolation, with Leroy Sana thumping in number seven late on - it was a record seventh time the Bavarian outfit had hit seven in a game in the competition.

Champions League: Robert Lewandowski's hat-trick helps Bayern Munich register clinical win over Salzburg

Liverpool must forget their 2-0 advantage over Inter Milan when they face the Italian side in the return leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, manager Juergen Klopp said on Monday.

Inter, second in the Serie A standings, have won one of their last six games in all competitions but thrashed bottom side Salernitana 5-0 on Friday.

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a win over the Italians in February, putting them in a commanding position for Tuesday's game, but Klopp warned against complacency.

"2-0 is probably the lead that has been turned over most often in the history of football," Klopp told a news conference.

"If you are (at) halftime and two up and you think you are already through then you are already on the wrong path."

"The result (in the first leg) was much better than I expected. It was a really tough tie and a difficult game to play. We know they have real quality. They won their last game 5-0... it was really impressive."

"It's an experienced team, and they don't come here as tourists. They want to attack the game, and we are not a team who defends results and tries to scrape through. Let`s see what we can get from it."

The German also gave an update on the injured trio of Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Firmino, who all missed the 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham United on Saturday.

"All of them trained fully yesterday," Klopp said. "We have to see how they react, but Thiago will probably be fine since he was only out for a week. With Joel it was just three or four days, so he should be fine too.

"Bobby has been out for longer, so we have to see if it makes sense to give him just a few more days with proper training."

Klopp also repeated his call for Premier League clubs to be able to use five substitutes, saying the rule change was necessary to help teams deal with a congested schedule.

"We played Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday and (now) Tuesday. That's a horrible schedule," Klopp said. "It's essential that we go again for five substitutes in the Premier League.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick said Manchester United know they can hardly afford to drop any more points if the Reds are to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League by finishing in the Premier League's top four.

Manchester City showed their quality in the second half of Sunday's derby and a 4-1 defeat for United means the race for the top four is now an uphill struggle.

Rangnick believes United still can beat rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to be in that leading quartet, but that the team will be taking it game-by-game.

The German coach after the match said: "I didn't actually expect Arsenal to lose at Watford so for us, it's clear, if we still want to have a chance to finish fourth at the end of the season, we can almost not drop any more points, and we also know that in those 10 games that we have to play, there are a few other difficult ones so let's take it game by game."

"For us, it's important we keep developing the team, which we did in the last couple of months, and then make sure we can win the next two home games against Tottenham and against Atletico, two very important games for us to come," he added.

Goals in each half from Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic earned defending champions Chelsea a solid 2-0 first-leg victory over Lille in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, but the London side will be concerned about injuries to key players.

Germany forward Havertz, who had already had two attempts on goal early in the game, headed down a Hakim Ziyech corner in the eighth minute and the ball bounced high off the turf into the net.

Chelsea left struggling striker Romelu Lukaku on the bench and it was American Pulisic who hit the second in the 63rd minute with a curling finish after N'Golo Kante's surging run and pinpoint pass.

The action was at times frenetic as Ligue 1 champions Lille sought to take something from the game into the second leg at home on March 16.

"They played good football and the first half was very difficult for us. Now it is halftime and the next game we have to win as well," Havertz told BT Sport.

The French side, who topped their qualifying group ahead of Salzburg, VfL Wolfsburg and Sevilla, kept Chelsea busy going forward with buzzing runs from Renato Sanches, Benjamin Andre and Jonathan Bamba.

But efforts from all three and from Canadian striker Jonathan David were either blocked, usually by defensive rock Thiago Silva, or collected easily by Edouard Mendy in the Chelsea goal.

Chelsea, who face Liverpool in the League Cup final on Sunday, may be satisfied with their two-goal lead in the tie but they will be concerned for the fitness of pivotal midfielder Mateo Kovacic and of in-form Ziyech who both limped off early in the second half.

They also won games in the FA Cup and Premier League before Tuesday's game and Sunday's final at Wembley.

"We did not play our best football," Havertz said. "We could not get the aggressiveness of the last few weeks but we won 2-0 and that is the most important thing. Sunday is another competition and we have to focus on that now."

Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed any suggestion that Kylian Mbappe's focus on Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg between Real Madrid and Paris St Germain could be affected by a potential move to the Spanish side.

PSG turned down an offer of around 160 million euros ($180.98 million) from Real for Mbappe last August, even though the player had less than a year left on his contract.

The France striker, 23, is widely expected to move to Real on a free transfer at the end of this season after resisting an offer to sign a new contract with PSG.

"Every player in the game will be 100% focused on knocking out a team who can compete with them to win the Champions League," Real coach Ancelotti told a news conference on Monday before the fixture at the Parc des Princes.

"Mbappe will be thinking the same as Karim Benzema or Vinicius. Everyone has the same aim."

Ancelotti said he will wait until the day of the game before deciding whether or not to start top scorer Benzema, who has been out of action for three weeks with a hamstring injury but returned to training on Sunday and was selected in the squad.

Manchester United`s Premier League match at Brentford on Tuesday has been postponed due to a number of COVID-19 cases at the Old Trafford club, the league announced on Monday.

United had reported a "small number" of cases discovered among first-team staff and players on Sunday, with the squad who travelled to Norwich City for their Premier League clash on Saturday kept apart from those who had the virus.

"The decision (to postpone the Brentford-United game) was taken following guidance from medical advisers due to the exceptional circumstances of an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within Manchester United`s squad," the league said in a statement.

"First team operations at the club’s Carrington Training Complex were closed down today to help control the outbreak and minimise risk of further infection among players and staff."

Discussions took place with the Premier League as to whether it would be safe to fulfil Tuesday`s fixture, with United deferring their travel to London until a decision had been made.

The Premier League found a record 42 cases of COVID-19 among players and staff at various clubs over the past week.

The 42 positive tests from over 3,800 individuals is more than the tally from the previous seven weeks combined and a record in the English top flight in a single week.

"The League has reverted to its Emergency Measures, and will increase the frequency of both Lateral Flow and PCR COVID-19 testing of players and staff," it said in a statement.

Brentford said they welcomed the decision to postpone Tuesday`s match.

"We appreciate that there will be many fans who will be inconvenienced with the fixture postponement and we apologise for the disruption, which was out of our control," the club said.

"We respect the Premier League`s decision and acknowledge that the health and safety of both clubs` players and staff must always come first.

"We wish everyone affected a speedy recovery and look forward to hosting Manchester United at the Brentford Community Stadium in the new year."

Paris Saint-Germain will play Real Madrid while Liverpool take on Inter Milan in two of the standout ties in the last 16 of the Champions League after an embarrassed UEFA was forced to redo Monday's draw following a "technical problem".

PSG had initially been paired together with Manchester United but the reworked draw sees them play Real while the Old Trafford side will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

UEFA Champions League draw to be 'entirely redone' after technical error

Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League following a 3-0 defeat at Bayern Munich on Wednesday, failing to make it past the group stage of the competition for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

First-half goals from Thomas Mueller and Leroy Sane put the Germans, who won all six matches to top Group E, firmly in the driving seat before Jamal Musiala tapped in the third just past the hour.

Barcelona had advanced to at least the round of 16 every time they competed in the Champions League since 2001 but will continue in the second tier Europa League after ending up third in the group. Benfica qualified as group runners-up with a win over bottom club Dynamo Kyiv.

Barca, who made not a single chance in the second half and scored just twice in six group games, have lost their last two matches in all competitions following new coach Xavi`s first defeat in charge of the side by Real Betis on Saturday.

"Bayern were better, superior," Xavi said. "This is the harsh reality we have to face. I have told players that this is a turning-point. Today a new era begins and we have to take Barca where it deserves which is not the Europa League.

"I am frustrated because this is our reality. We start from scratch and we have to get Barca back to fighting for the Champions League. I now feel responsible. Now we have to go out and win the Europa League."

Despite having secured top spot in the group, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann fielded his strongest possible team, refusing to rest top players after they beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The German champions had been struggling defensively, keeping just one clean sheet in their last eight matches prior to Wednesday.

Jordi Alba tested Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer with a long-range effort in the seventh minute and Ousmane Dembele fired over the bar as the Spaniards initially pressed high. But that was all that was to come from the Barca attack for the rest of the game as the Germans gradually took control.

Champions League: Barcelona thrashed 3-0 by Bayern, to miss knockout after 20 years

Liverpool's second-string side fought back to knock AC Milan out of Europe with a 2-1 victory at San Siro as goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi helped the Reds become the first English team to win all six games in a Champions League group stage.

Milan needed to win to stand any chance of progressing to the last 16 and went in front through their England defender Fikayo Tomori in the first half to cheer the home support.

But Salah soon equalised with his 20th goal of the season in all competitions and Origi, who came on to score a stoppage-time winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday, headed home Liverpool’s second after the break.

Jurgen Klopp’s side became the first English team to enjoy a perfect Champions League group stage campaign, finishing top of Group B with 18 points.

It was also the first time in their history that they had chalked up a sixth consecutive victory in the competition.

"What the boys did tonight, I could not be more proud," Klopp told BT Sport. "The performance was outstanding. Having 21 shots, so many situations where we played outstandingly well and defended passionately and well organised."

Milan came last with four points in their first Champions League campaign since 2013-14, as Atletico Madrid beat Porto 3-1 to reach the knockout stage by taking second spot with seven points, two ahead of the Portuguese side.

NEW-LOOK LIVERPOOL

With top spot wrapped up before kick-off, Liverpool made eight changes, handing Origi a rare start after his heroics against Wolves.

"We chose that lineup because we wanted to win the game. We needed fresh legs," Klopp explained.

"We needed desire to play this game which is difficult in this hectic schedule to always be on fire for the next game."

San Siro erupted after Takumi Minamino missed a clearance from a corner in the 29th minute, forcing Alisson Becker to parry the ball into Tomori’s path for a simple finish.

But just as the home crowd started to believe in an improbable final-day climb into the top two, Salah struck.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's shot was beaten away by goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but the Egyptian reacted quickly to fire home.

Salah became the first Liverpool player to score 20 or more goals in five consecutive seasons since Ian Rush, who did so for six campaigns in a row between 1981 and 1987.

Liverpool expect Porto to be highly motivated for Wednesday`s Champions League group stage meeting and will not take their opponents lightly despite having qualified for the last 16, manager Juergen Klopp said on Tuesday.

Liverpool, seven points ahead of second-placed Porto in Group B, were comfortable 5-1 winners in the away fixture in September, with Klopp saying the Portuguese outfit would be eager to avenge that heavy defeat.

"The last game was really unlucky for them. They were without their centre back pairing, had an injury early on and we scored at the wrong times for them and right times for us," Klopp told reporters.

"We know our opponent will be motivated on the highest level for two main reasons. One, we won there in a way that they didn`t like... and on the other hand if they win they have the final game of the group against Atletico Madrid."

Atletico trail Porto by a point and face AC Milan, who sit bottom with one point, in Wednesday`s other Group B clash.

Klopp said midfielder Jordan Henderson and left back Andy Robertson were both available to start following their recent return from injury, but added he would decide on their participation closer to the game.

"We always respect the competition and but we have to think about ourselves, our schedule and the situation of our players first," said the German.

Champions League: Liverpool cannot be complacent against Porto, says manager Jurgen Klopp

Manchester City got back to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Brugge to move to within sight of the Champions League knockout rounds although it was not a trouble-free night for Pep Guardiola`s side on Wednesday.

In the end, goals by Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus earned a comfortable enough victory to leave City top of Group A with nine points after Paris St Germain could only draw with RB Leipzig.

But there were periods after a John Stones own goal gave Brugge an early equaliser in which City looked uncomfortable.

The Belgians had several decent opportunities before Mahrez headed Pep Guardiola`s side back in front in the 54th minute. Sterling gave City breathing space with a tap-in after 72 minutes and the hosts were able to coast home.

Substitute Jesus gave the scoreline an emphatic look as he added the fourth with the last kick of the game.

"The manager wasn`t happy at halftime and you have to take his advice," Foden said. "He changed things and we were much better in the second half.

"Once we got our rhythm the chances started opening up."

City, who suffered a surprise Premier League defeat by Crystal Palace at the weekend following last week`s League Cup exit, need only one point from their remaining two games to secure their last-16 place.

Brugge are in third spot with four points.

City began in confident fashion and went ahead when Foden tapped in from close range from Joao Cancelo`s pass in the 15th minute.

But they were stunned two minutes later when Hans Vanaken`s shot was well saved by Ederson but Bernardo Silva`s attempted clearance struck Stones in the head and the ball rebounded into the net.

City lacked their usual fluency and Brugge threatened on the break.

The visitors had a glorious chance to go ahead when Charles De Ketelaere missed the target from close range shortly after the interval and they were made to pay a minute later when Mahrez headed in Cancelo`s cross to calm City nerves.

A fluent City move ended with Ilkay Gundogan squaring for substitute Sterling to convert to end a 12-match goal drought.

Champions League: Manchester City thrash Club Brugge 4-1 after slow start

Georginio Wijnaldum scored his first two goals for his new club Paris St Germain on Wednesday but a stoppage-time penalty for RB Leipzig rescued a 2-2 draw in their Champions League Group A game.

The Dutchman, who had struggled this season after joining from Liverpool, struck in the 21st minute and headed in another goal six minutes before halftime.

Leipzig, eliminated from competition with just one point from four matches, had taken the lead through Christopher Nkunku in the eighth minute and they missed the chance to double it when Andre Silva`s 12th-minute penalty was saved.

Substitute Dominik Szoboszlai did better from the spot in second-half stoppage time, however, to rescue a point for the Germans, semi-finalists in 2020.

The French side, without the injured Lionel Messi, are in second place on eight points, one behind Manchester City. Club Brugge are on four with Leipzig bottom on one.

"We created a lot of opportunities but also gave a few away and that`s why they stayed in the game," Wijnaldum said. "At times we made it easy for them."

"If you look at the end of the game we lost the ball too often. We also did not convert our chances. Maybe Leipzig deserved the point.

"I work hard every day and I`m getting to know my team mates better. Let`s hope I can continue this form," he added.

The Germans, looking for a win that would boost their slim chances of a knockout stage spot, had made a barnstorming start when Christopher Nkunku headed in at the near post eight minutes into the game.

The hosts could have doubled the advantage when they were awarded a penalty four minutes later but Silva`s tame effort was stopped by keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

That proved to be the turning-point in the game as a quick PSG combination between Neymar and Kylian Mbappe allowed Wijnaldum to slot in the equaliser.

He struck again in the 39th, heading in his second goal of the evening and celebrating it only after a lengthy VAR review.

Mbappe went close to scoring on the stroke of halftime but keeper Peter Gulacsi pulled off a reflex save to deny the French striker, who also missed a golden opportunity early in the second half.

With the French backline far from solid, Leipzig constantly found the spaces to get into the box but they struggled with their finishing and Szoboszlai missed the target with their best chance.

The Hungarian, however, made amends when he stepped up to take a stoppage-time penalty, awarded for a foul on Nkunku, and equalised to earn his team`s first point in the competition and keep them in the running for a spot in the Europa League.

Champions League: Georginio Wijnaldum scores brace for PSG before Leipzig tie ends in 2-2 stalemate

Liverpool marched into the knockout stages of the Champions League with two games to spare after a convincing 2-0 victory over 10-man Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday guaranteed them top spot in Group B.

With four wins out of four, Juergen Klopp`s side can now take their foot off the gas for the final two games of the group stage and focus their resources on their Premier League title push.

Liverpool have yet to lose in 16 matches in all competitions this season and their unbeaten run stretches back 25 matches to their April 6 loss to Real Madrid in last season`s Champions League campaign.

"The first target was to get through this group. I didn`t expect we would be through after four games but the boys did it and it`s really well deserved," said Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp.

The only negative for Klopp's side was a hamstring injury to Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino in the second half.

A draw would have been enough for Liverpool to be sure of their passage to the last 16, but from the outset Klopp`s side looked like they had nothing but victory on their minds.

Diogo Jota put the home side ahead in the 13th minute, nodding home at the back post after a great cross from the right by Trent Alexander-Arnold although Atletico coach Diego Simeone will surely have felt that his stationary defenders made the goal far too easy.

Alexander-Arnold was again the provider for the second eight minutes later when his low ball into the box was brilliantly met by Sadio Mane who fired past Jan Oblak.

Liverpool were buzzing, first to the ball across midfield and quick to push forward in search of a third.

The Spanish side`s troubles intensified after Felipe was sent off in the 36th minute for a deliberate trip on Mane that earned him a harsh straight red.

Mohamed Salah forced a good save out of Oblak before halftime with a stinging drive as Liverpool went in at the interval in firm control.

Jota thought he had his second and Liverpool`s third, shortly after the break, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

There were some signs of life from the visitors after that reprieve and former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez looked to have reduced the deficit with a deflected shot that deceived Alisson Becker, but that effort too was annulled by VAR for offside.

The Spanish champions, who beyond that moment failed to test the Liverpool keeper at all, could have no complaints about the outcome, which leaves them in third place on four points, one behind second placed Porto.

Oblak was puzzled by the team`s defending in front of him but said qualification for the knockout stage remained within their reach.

"We depend on ourselves. We have to win the two games that remain," he said. "It won’t be easy -- we all know that -- and we have to give our best version of ourselves and do our best. With our quality, if we show it on the field, we can win the two games and get through to the last 16."

Clearing the air, Diego Simeone explained the reason for not shaking Jurgen Klopp's hands after Liverpool defeated Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a ferocious Champions League clash on Tuesday (October 19). At the full-time whistle, when Klopp turned to shake hands with his counterpart, Simeone ran down the tunnel in frustration, Klopp then gave him a thumbs up instead. When asked about the incident, Atletico Madrid boss said, "I don’t always greet after the game because I don’t like it. It's not healthy for either the winner or the loser. I think of it that way. But now, when I see him, I’ll greet him without a problem." "It was a tough match against an opponent who has a great game, who usually wins matches by many goals. We did not start the match as we wanted and from the second goal we started the match we were looking for," Simeone added. IN PICS | How much Cristiano Ronaldo earns per week? Mauricio Pochettino has been insisting that Paris St Germain have yet to become a team and Tuesday's 3-2 Champions League victory against RB Leipzig served as a reminder that the Ligue 1 side have yet to find their collective stride.

PSG were overwhelmed in the midfield, their full backs often caught off guard by a visiting team who played with high pressure throughout and the French club only had Kylian Mbappe's brilliance and Lionel Messi`s clinical finish to be happy about.

"There are things we can improve because we need to control the match for 90 minutes and for 20-25 minutes, we lost that control," said midfielder Ander Herrera.

PSG went ahead early on as Mbappe fired home at the end of a sharp counterattack but fell behind after goals at the far post by Andre Silva and Nordi Mukiele.

France striker Mbappe then took the matter into his own hands to overturn the deficit, providing Messi with the assist for the equaliser before winning the penalty that the Argentine coolly converted.

Until then, Messi had been a pale shadow of his brilliant self, stuck near the touchline with too little speed to make a difference.

It is only when he repositioned in the heart of the game, closer to Mbappe, that the former Barcelona forward could finally help.

Eventually, PSG were left being satisfied with the team's character.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp walked out of the interview after a dramatic Champions League contest against Atletico Madrid that his side won 3-2 on Tuesday (October 19) at the Wanda Metropolitano. Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool took charge of Group B, in the match, Atletico's Antoine Griezmann also scored twice but was sent off for a dangerous high boot in the face of Roberto Firmino as he challenged for a high ball. The drama even continued after the match when Klopp turned to shake hands with his counterpart Diego Simeone, who refused it and ran down the tunnel in frustration, Klopp then gave him a thumbs up. I am not such an idiot that you can [ask a] little bit question here. I was not angry at all." "Have a look. I can imagine you want to make a story out of that, but I wanted to shake his hand, he [Simeone] doesn't want it, he added. "In that moment I can understand that, he was running inside. He's emotional, I'm emotional, and you are not a nice person because you want to make a story out of that. You said I'm angry, when was I angry? Now I am angry because of your question, come on," Klopp added. When the journalist continued with his line of questioning, Klopp concluded by saying, "I'm now angry because of your question, come on." First, he steered home a Koke shot in the 20th minute to reduce the deficit and 14 minutes later he drew his side level, a superb first touch opening up the space in front of him for a clinical finish low past Alisson's left hand. Defender Mario Hermoso conceded a penalty by barging into Diogo Jota, and Salah made no mistake from the spot to put Liverpool back in the lead. However, Liverpool seemingly tripped themselves up again when Atletico Madrid were awarded a penalty after Jota appeared to bundle over Jose Maria Gimenez, but the decision was overturned after a lengthy VAR review. The win kept Liverpool top in Group B on nine points, five ahead of second-placed Atletico and Porto in third, with AC Milan pointless at the foot of the table. (With inputs from agencies)

Manchester City’s latest home-grown starlet Cole Palmer announced his arrival on the European stage on Tuesday with a maturely taken goal that had manager Pep Guardiola purring over his ability.

The 19-year-old midfielder came on for the last 25 minutes and scored the fourth in a 5-1 victory as the English champions ran riot in Belgium against Club Brugge to put their Champions League campaign back on track.

Palmer, who joined City at under-8 level, has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and scored in the League Cup against Wycombe Wanderers last month, but his left-footed finish in Bruges hinted at much more to come.

"Cole has a special quality in front of the box, a talent that is difficult to find,” said Guardiola after Tuesday’s one-sided triumph.
"When he has the ball there, most of the time it ends up in the net. It’s difficult to find that.”

But the Manchester City manager made it clear Palmer would be brought along slowly.

"I know how it works with young players. We have to be calm and patient.

"His place is the second team but at the same time he trains with us and works with our principles,” added the manager.

Palmer became only the third teenager to score for City in the Champions League after Phil Foden and Kelechi Iheanacho and, at the age of 19 and 166 days, he is the 10th youngest Englishman to score in the competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo headlines Manchester United's dramatic win vs Villarreal in UEFA Champions League face-off

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said he felt his side had lost their mental sharpness even before the Champions League holders stepped on the pitch ahead of their 1-0 loss to Juventus in Turin on Wednesday.

Federico Chiesa's goal early in the second half was enough to inflict a first Champions League group-stage defeat on Chelsea since September 2019, with the Blues suffering their second successive 1-0 loss in all competitions.

"We had a very good training session yesterday," Tuchel told reporters. "We were absolutely sharp and looked very fresh and very hungry, ready for bounce back (from defeat to Manchester City on Saturday).

"I think it's very difficult to find rhythm against a team that defends so deep, it was completely the other way around in the Manchester City game.

"The big difference was that we gave big mistakes away that cost us confidence. Early today I could tell it was different. We were not as fresh mentally as we were in training yesterday. I don't know why."

Chelsea enjoyed 73% possession in Turin against a Juventus side who have been struggling in Serie A this season and registered just one shot on target all match - Romelu Lukaku`s tame early effort.

Tuchel's team did not have a single attempt on target against City at the weekend, but the German insisted he is not worried by their lack of attacking threat.

"We were lacking runs, we were struggling to find our rhythm and to keep the belief structure," Tuchel added.

"Maybe it is a shooting problem, because if you don’t shoot then you don’t score. But if you play against a team that sit so deep like today it is hard to take shots. We will learn."

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri was rather more poetic when describing his side's recovery from a poor start to the season in recent weeks.

The Chelsea success was Juve's third win in a row in all competitions, as the Serie A team moved onto six points at the top of Champions League Group H.

"Usually sailors always find the way out when they are in a storm," Allegri said. "Tonight we played a good match against the European champions.

"There is no turning point, let's just take the six points and be happy. The (league) championship is another thing.

"Tonight the team understood that against another side who do not allow you to have possession, you have to adapt and have a defensive match. I never got angry, the defending was perfect."

Champions League-Ole Gunner Solskjaer hails David De Gea as best in world after Villarreal win

It was a moment that Paris Saint-Germain fans had been waiting for since the arrival of Lionel Messi in mid-August, and finally it came in style and on a big occasion.

In front of nearly 50,000 home supporters on Tuesday, the Argentine superstar scored his first goal for his new club, helping the Ligue 1 giants take a 2-0 revenge over English Premier League champions Manchester City, to whom they lost in the semifinals of last season`s Champions League.

The 34-year-old forward sparked in the 74 minutes, running the ball into the front and after a good one-two with Kylian Mbappe, he found the net with his iconic left-foot strike.

The goal sent the packed Parc des Princes into raptures with deafening roars hovering over the stadium and the crowd chanted by the scorer`s name, Xinhua reports.

"It was a perfect night against a great opponent. For us, it was very important to win this game after Brugge," said Messi, who has played three matches for PSG before this week but failed to open his scoring account.

"I am very happy to have scored. I haven`t played much recently," Messi added. "I am adapting little by little. What is important is to keep winning."

It was Messi`s 121st goal in the Champions League and 27th in 35 appearances against the English teams - far more than any other player. With this goal, the six-time Ballon d`Or winner has scored in 17 consecutive Champions League seasons, equalling a record set by Karim Benzema just minutes earlier in another clash.

"I`ve spent 20 years watching him score goals from the other side of the opposite pavement and it`s the first time he scores for a team I manage so I had to celebrate," PSG`s head coach Mauricio Pochettino said.

"You need this type of performance and players like him need to feel the back of the net. He needs to create links within the team after 20 years in Barcelona. He`s feeling different things, there`s a lot of new feelings for him."

French midfielder Idrissa Gueye put the hosts ahead only eight minutes into the game. Mbappe dribbled from the right and Neymar missed his cutback, but Gueye appeared in the right place and fired the ball into the top corner.

Pep Guardiola`s side was close to an equalizer in the 26th minute but Raheem Sterling`s header was refused by the bar and Bernardo Silva`s shot hit the woodwork again.

"They can take the space, they are exceptional players, like Messi-Suarez-Neymar at Barca," Guardiola said after the match, which was City`s first Champions League group defeat since September 2018, when they lost 2-1 to Lyon, before an 18-game unbeaten run.

"It`s hard to control Messi for 90 minutes. It is difficult to stop him and we had to minimize the opportunities for him to touch the ball. Tonight we did what we know how to do, good or bad, but we are what we are. Tonight there was also Verratti who was extraordinary and managed to find connections with Neymar."

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said his team will be punished if they sit back in their Champions League clash with holders Chelsea in Turin on Wednesday as he called for his side to take the game to their opponents.

Juventus has endured a difficult start to the season after failing to win any of their opening four league games for the first time in 60 years, and come into the match against Chelsea with several injuries.

They did get off to a winning start in the Champions League against Malmo two weeks ago, while Allegri's men also earned victories in their last two Serie A matches.

The Juve coach hopes that will give his side a boost ahead of Wednesday's encounter.

"You need to apply pressure but you have to play well," Allegri told a news conference.

"You can't play 95 minutes under pressure. When you have the ball you have to breathe to build and recover immediately.

"They are strong on the counter-attack, they are strong in dead balls. It will be difficult to find gaps and we will have to be good all over the pitch.

"We will need patience, but we will have to have fun. We have improved in recent games. The emotion is natural. In front of us we have a team where if you make mistakes, you are punished."

Without the injured Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata, Allegri said he has no other option but to deploy Moise Kean in the lone striker role.

"He (Kean) has to play and score," Allegri added. "One thing he knows how to do well is scoring. He has to improve when he has to play with the team, in terms of individual technique."

Speaking at the same news conference, defender Giorgio Chiellini insisted no extra motivation was needed ahead of such blockbuster European encounters.

"It was easy to prepare the game, the coach has told us the same thing," Chiellini said.

"These are very nice games, you can prepare them easily.

"He (Kean) has to play and score," Allegri added. "One thing he knows how to do well is scoring. He has to improve when he has to play with the team, in terms of individual technique." Speaking at the same news conference, defender Giorgio Chiellini insisted no extra motivation was needed ahead of such blockbuster European encounters. "It was easy to prepare the game, the coach has told us the same thing," Chiellini said. "These are very nice games, you can prepare them easily. "We’ll be playing home against the European champions, it will be challenging."

Champions League: We must take the game to Chelsea, says Juventus' Massimiliano Allegri

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti struggled to explain how his side was beaten 2-1 at home by rank outsiders Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League on Tuesday after dominating every aspect of the match with the exception of the scoreline.

Luxembourg midfielder Sebastien Thill scored an outstanding late half volley to snatch an unlikely victory for Sheriff, who reached the Champions League group stage for the first time this season after winning four qualifying rounds.

Sheriff took the lead against the run of play with a header from Jasurbek Yakhshiboev while Karim Benzema equalised for the 13-times European champions with a second-half penalty before Thill secured the victory.

Real had 30 shots on goal and 11 on target while keeping 67% of possession and winning 13 corners while the Moldovan side had only four attempts, scoring two of their three shots on target and failing to win a single corner.

"Everything went well for them while everything we did turned out badly," Ancelotti told reporters after his side's first defeat of the season.

"More than worried we are sad. We played with intensity and commitment but lost due to the finest details. The team played well, we could have been sharper in the area but it's difficult to explain what happened.

"The small details cost us the game and we should learn from that in the future. But this was a defeat we did not deserve."

Sheriff, who were founded in 1997, are top of Group D with six points, after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in their opening game.

"I dreamed of winning in the Bernabeu, I have always followed Madrid they are the most successful team in the Champions League so to beat them at home is a huge achievement," said Sheriff defender Gustavo Dulanto.

"There's still a long way to go and we can't relax because there's no logic in football, as today's result shows. We came here with the knife between our teeth but we can only look forward to the next game."

Captain Frank Castaneda revealed his side had fancied their chances before kickoff.

"We knew we could win here and before the game, we had it in our heads that we could and as captain I tried to motivate the team and tell them we could do it because this is football," he said.

"Real Madrid is an historic team but on the pitch it's 11 players versus 11 and we came here to get the victory and got it."

Match-winner Thill added: "We're so happy today. We played a really good game. The side was so brave with how we played and luckily enough I was able to score a bit of a stunner."

'We didn't deserve to lose', says Ancelotti after Real stunned by Sheriff

Lionel Messi is expected to play in Paris St Germain`s Champions League clash against Manchester City on Tuesday after taking part in a training session. The Argentine forward missed two Ligue 1 games with a bruised knee but did not appear to be struggling with the injury on Monday morning.

"We will confirm the starting 11 tomorrow," coach Mauricio Pochettino told a news conference when asked about Messi ahead of the Group A clash at the Parc des Princes.

"But I think he will be in the squad tomorrow."

Pochettino added that Messi, who joined the French club on a two-year contract from Barcelona, would need time to adjust in Paris.

"He did 20 years in Barcelona, it`s normal he felt at home there and here, everything is new for him. He did not arrive a long time ago," the Argentine said.

Pochettino also confirmed that Marco Verratti would probably be involved after the Italy midfielder missed four games with a knee injury.

"He trained well the last few days and we think he will be able to be in the squad. We haven`t decided on the starting 11 but he could be in it," he said.

PSG were knocked out in the Champions League semi-finals last season by City, a club that is "ahead" of the capital side, Pochettino conceded.

"It`s a fact, not an opinion, that we are a team in construction. City have been under the best coach in the world in my opinion with Pep Guardiola," he said.

"It`s a matter of time but also, let`s face it, of investment."

In that department, PSG have nothing to envy City for after spending well over a billion euros on transfers since Qatar Sport Investment took over the club in 2011. On the field, they need to be more efficient, midfielder Ander Herrera said.

"We work everyday to get better, we need to be more efficient than last season," the Spaniard, who has been in good form this season, told a news conference.

"Against a team like them, we have to go for the kill when we have chances."

PSG have one point after their 1-1 draw at Club Brugge, two behind City who hammered RB Leipzig 6-3 in the opening round of matches.
