"Nightbitch," an amusing fable about motherhood and identity that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, has raised expectations for the movie come awards season, but its star Amy Adams is shrugging off the speculation.

Adapted from the bestselling novel by Rachel Yoder, the movie is a comeback performance for Adams, who is already a six-time Oscar nominee. She was last seen in "Hillbilly Elegy'," the 2020 film adaptation of a memoir by JD Vance, now the Republican candidate for U.S. vice president.

"Nightbitch" tells a feminist fantasy about regaining lost power and identity. Adams plays an artist-turned-suburban housewife, named simply Mother. She loves her baby but can't help but feel isolated and irrelevant in her new role.

Eventually, she notices a pack of neighbourhood dogs gathering outside her house after dark. She notices changes within herself. Her sense of smell is heightened. Before long, she is out running through the night with her canine pals, rediscovering her identity and feelings of self-worth.

Asked if she hoped the movie was in line for an Academy Award, Adams told Reuters she was not focused on accolades. Instead, she said, she wanted every viewer to connect with the film in their own way.

"My experience of watching it with different people is this film tells one person's story, but different people connect with it in different ways because each person's journey is so unique to them," she said on the red carpet on Saturday.

"Everyone's catching glimpses of themselves in it through different aspects of the storytelling. And I'm really proud of that."

Director Marielle Heller, whose credits include 2018's "Can You Forgive Me?," said she wanted to show through "Nightbitch" that movies made by women and for women can win commercial and critical acclaim.

"We are here to show that women also go to the movies and are more than half of the population and we are worthwhile and worth making movies for," she said.

Heller said she was grateful that author Rachel Yoder allowed her to adapt the book by keeping the essence of the novel while departing from its internal, deeply emotional voice. That adaptation made the story more visually appealing on the big screen, the director said.

Yoder, who was also on the red carpet, said that she did not mind the departure from the text because Heller's treatment made the book come alive visually.

'Harbin' brings out fans of Korean stars in Toronto

Oscar nominees Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are both hard-pressed to explain exactly how on-screen chemistry is created, but they have oodles of it in their new tearjerker romance We Live in Time, which debuted at the Toronto film festival.

The movie tells the story of Michelin-starred chef Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield), an employee of cereal company Weetabix, who meet-cute in perhaps the most awkward way possible -- she hits him with her car.

Director John Crowley takes the audience on an intimate journey of their love story, from dating and steamy sex to building a family to confronting cancer, through snapshots of their existence -- all presented out of order.

For Pugh, that process allowed the two actors to learn more about their characters and each other as the shoot went on. "It was such a magical experience," the 28-year-old British actress told AFP on Saturday, not long after the movie's warmly received premiere late Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

"We've been trying to talk about what chemistry is and where it comes from, and ultimately, we don't know other than the fact that we both were willing to jump together, and that's probably why it feels so mad and raw."

Indeed, there are brutal moments of anger between the couple, but also paralyzing sadness and, before that, the wild thrill of having a child -- an emergency delivery in a gas station bathroom.

"I'm so happy that I did it and I got to do it with Florence," Garfield said. "I don't think it was meant to be with anyone else," added the 41-year-old, who was taking a break when he received Nick Payne's script, and quickly jumped at the chance to work with Crowley, who had directed him in "Boy A" (2007).

The British-American actor said Saturday the film was "like a sacred healing ritual," allowing him to handle "certain losses that I experienced, and with certain longings that I was experiencing."

- 'Old soul' -

For Crowley, Payne's nonlinear structure offered a "playful invitation to the audience to begin putting this together."

He told AFP that the shoot was of course out of order, though the crew did not want Garfield and Pugh "schizophrenically jumping too far" between time periods on any given day.

On the few days with scenes in three time periods, "that was a real head-wrecker for them," he said.

"It was a very interesting technical and emotional exercise."

After working on last year's huge hit "Oppenheimer" and sci-fi epic "Dune 2," Pugh said she was thrilled with the genre shift for "We Live in Time," which will open in limited release in the United States on October 11.

"I've been wanting to do a love story for a while," she told AFP.

Once her character Almut is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she struggles to balance her limited time left between her family and her professional goals.

"The things that she's going through in the story are the things I see in my friends, in my sisters and my mum, in myself now," Pugh said, referring to the hectic juggling of career, love, motherhood and health.

When asked about the 13-year age difference between the actors, Crowley said it quickly became irrelevant because of the pair's palpable connection.

"Florence is an old soul," the director said. "She carries more heft on her and in a way, Andrew, who's also an old soul, carries a kind of boyishness -- he always has."

In another interview, Kidman said that her mother always encourages her and helps her achieve her goals. “She’s given me the fire to pursue the career I have because I’ve always wanted to please her,” Kidman said. “But she also carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths.”

Florence Pugh proved she's a true blue fashionista at the Toronto International Film Festival as she arrived for the premiere of her latest film, We Live in Time. On Friday (Sep. 6), Pugh made heads turn in a show-stopping Tamara Ralph ball gown in a soft pastel pink.

The full-skirt satin dress featured crinkled details cascading across the wide skirt, giving the ensemble an ethereal feel. The gown’s bodice, a fitted ruching design, wrapped in a crisscross pattern, emphasized her waist, while the deep sweetheart neckline added a bold touch. A black leather bow and matching rose at the centre added the perfect hint of drama.

The Oscar-nominated actress rocked a short bob in a sleek, polished style with soft curls. Keeping up with the Old Hollywood Glamour aesthetic, Pugh opted for a pale pink eyeshadow, a subtle cat-eye, and rosy pink lip gloss. For accessories, she opted for diamond earrings and a silver septum ring.

The Order, a movie about a violent, white supremacist movement in 1980s America is worryingly relevant today and shows the need to be on constant guard against bigotry, the film's star Jude Law said on Saturday.

The movie, making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, is based on true events, depicting the charismatic, radical-right leader, Bob Mathews, who wanted to create a homeland for whites by sowing terror in the United States.

Law plays a veteran FBI agent who moves to the U.S. Pacific Northwest hoping for some peace and quiet after a troubled past battling the Mafia, only to stumble on Mathews' gang as it staged bank heists to build its war chest.

"Sadly the relevance I think speaks for itself ... It felt like a piece of work that needed to be made now," said Law, a prolific British actor who also serves as a producer on the film, which was directed by Australian Justin Kurzel.

"The film is about an ideology that's incredibly dangerous and how it can quickly take seed," Kurzel told a press conference. "What was shocking to me, and I think to all of us, was that there were so many comparisons (with today)."

The ideology that motivated Mathews was similar to that of the extremist Proud Boys group, which led the storming of Congress on Jan. 6, 2021 in an effort to overturn the 2020 electoral defeat of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mathews, who is played by British actor Nicholas Hoult, attracted misfits and dropouts to his cause, creating a dedicated family of followers who bought into his vision of racial division and hate.

Hoult said what was worrying as he studied for the role, was that he could not find any specific trigger for Mathews' bigotry, such as a violent childhood.

"The scary thing about him ... was that he could be quite disarming ... and could probably put you under his spell."

As preparation for the film, director Kurzel asked Law to trail Hoult for a day, like his FBI character might have done. Hoult said he never realised he had been followed and was only told in Venice.

"I just found out on the boat here," he said, adding that he did not speak or meet with Law for the first four weeks of the shoot to help create division and tension between them.

Black actor Jurnee Smollett, who plays one of the FBI team tracking Mathews, said it was important that filmmakers continued to shine a light on deep-rooted U.S. racism.

"We get to explore the very complex sides of humanity, the ugliness, the darkness, in order for us to learn from it, and hopefully, to not repeat it," she said.

White supremacism finds fertile ground in Venice film The Order

Oasis's reunion concerts in the UK and Ireland next year have sold out, the British music legends said late Saturday, after a day-long struggle for millions of frustrated fans. The chaotic scramble for the prized tickets followed the announcement Tuesday that brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher had ended their infamous 15-year feud and were reuniting the 1990s-founded band for a worldwide tour.

"Oasis Live '25 UK and Ireland tickets have now SOLD OUT," the group said at 1800 GMT, some 10 hours after they first went on general sale. "Please be aware of counterfeit and void tickets appearing on the secondary market."

Tickets for the 17 UK and Ireland performances next July and August -- kicking off what has been billed as a global tour -- were expected to sell out within minutes. But with millions of fans flooding online for a chance to see the band play live for the first time since 2009, several sales websites struggled with the sheer volume of eager buyers.

Hundreds of thousands were left waiting for hours in online queues for each of the different dates -- or just to join the official waiting list. Others were unable to even access one of the sales websites and were instead greeted with an error message, while some encountered infuriating glitches.

An AFP reporter at the end of the purchase process after waiting online for several hours was abruptly dumped to the back of the queue for one date, behind nearly 200,000 others. The reporter did not succeed on subsequent attempts.

By mid-afternoon, Ticketmaster's Irish site said tickets for two mid-August concerts in Dublin had sold out. A company spokesperson insisted the UK site had not crashed and that "millions of fans" were "moving along" its queue for the 15 events there.

But exasperated fans were unimpressed, with social media full of memes and mockery. "Unfortunately, Oasis have split up while you were in the queue," joked one X account. "Can we just go back to the old days of queuing outside the record shop or gig venue to buy tickets please?" said another.

Some lucky fans snagged a small number of tickets in a Friday pre-sale, after success in a heavily oversubscribed ballot. But some of those tickets promptly appeared on resale sites at heavily inflated prices, some as high as £6,000 ($7,875).

That prompted Oasis to warn on X that "tickets sold in breach of the terms and conditions will be cancelled". The group behind hit songs including "Wonderwall", "Don't Look Back In Anger" and "Champagne Supernova" will stage concerts in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin. The eagerly-awaited Tuesday announcement also promised concerts in "continents outside of Europe later next year".

Tickets for their UK events started at around £75 ($98), rising to around £150 for standing in front of the stage. Some complained Saturday that "in demand" standing tickets cost as much as £360.

That was the last time they played together, although each has regularly performed the group's hits to sold-out crowds. The reunion tour will take place 30 years after Oasis's 1995 album "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?", which received international critical and commercial acclaim.

It will kick off over two nights at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital Cardiff from July 4, 2025, followed a week later by five gigs at Heaton Park in their hometown, Manchester. Oasis will then play Wembley -- on July 25, 26 and 30 as well as August 2 and 3 -- before three nights at Murrayfield Stadium in the Scottish capital Edinburgh, on August 8, 9 and 12.

The legal fight over Chateau Miraval, a 1,800-acre vineyard where Pitt and Jolie married in 2014, has been particularly contentious. The Only Murders in the Building actress was in town for the 2024 Telluride Film Festival to promote her new movie Emilia Pérez, when she received a special request she simply couldn’t resist. On Saturday, August 31, Gomez shared on Instagram that she attended a local high school volleyball game after fans created a sign asking her to come. The bright orange note, pinned to a bulletin board, asked the "Single Soon" singer to sing the National Anthem at one of their home games. Decorated with hearts and accompanied by a coach's email, the note caught Gomez's attention. "They asked!! Couldn’t help it, it’s my first time in Telluride!" Gomez captioned her post, which included a photo of the fan-made sign. Though the post didn’t feature footage of Gomez singing, it did include a video of her walking into the school’s gym to the sound of excited fans calling her name. In the video, she is seen saying, "I saw the sign and so I had to come." Her surprise visit was met with applause by students and attendees.
Actress Jessica Alba had the best surprise for her parents! On Friday (Aug 30), the actress revealed on YouTube that she bought her father's childhood home to surprise her parents. Since the property holds sentimental value, the actress documented the entire journey of transforming her father's first home into a dream abode for him.

The story behind this renovation is as moving as the outcome. Nearly three years ago, Alba embarked on what she described as "the project of my dreams." She surprised her parents by purchasing a house that was more than just bricks and mortar—it was her grandfather’s home, the very place where her father grew up.

"After my grandfather passed away, my parents were planning on selling the house in order to pay for my grandmother’s medical bills," Alba, 43, explained in the video’s description. "Well… I pretended like I was going to help them flip it before selling when in reality, I had planned to buy it for them all along."

Alba revealed in the video that the family house was going to "be put up for sale," since her grandmother required 24/7 care. But instead of putting it on sale, she decided to update it with the help of Mathis and a family friend (and contractor) named Tinku.

After locking in floor plans, the actress finally broke the news to her parents in June 2021. "The last piece of the puzzle is I have been trying to figure out how to tell you guys that I'm gonna buy you guys this house," Alba said. "So don't buy it yourself."

Nicole Kidman brought her erotic drama Babygirl to the Venice Film Festival on Friday, saying she felt exposed and nervous as the controlled intimacy of the set gets projected onto the big screen before a global audience.

Kidman has made a string of risque films throughout her career, including Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, which premiered in Venice 25 years ago. But she told reporters she was highly anxious about the reaction to her latest movie.

Kidman plays a successful New York CEO, Romy, who jeopardises both her career and her family by having a torrid affair with a young, opportunistic intern. "Making it with these people here, it was delicate and intimate and very, very deep," said Kidman, sitting alongside the director, Halina Reijn, and fellow stars Antonio Banderas, who plays her husband, and Harris Dickinson, her lover.

"But this definitely leaves me exposed and vulnerable and frightened ... when it's given to the world," she added. "We're all a bit nervous, so I was like, I hope my hands aren't shaking."

Shot by a female director, Babygirl brings a woman's gaze to the erotic thriller genre as she explores Romy's darkest fantasies that she cannot fulfil within the confines of her apparently successful marriage.

"I'm very delighted to be able to make a film about female desire, but it's also a film about a woman in an existential crisis, and it has many layers," said Reijn, whose earlier movies included the 2022 comedy horror Bodies Bodies Bodies.

Babygirl reveals profound differences in the ways younger and older generations view sex in a city where political correctness reigns. "I think there is in general a confusion about how to ... conduct yourself within sex as well," Dickinson said, praising the work of the intimacy coordinator who helped the actors overcome their natural boundaries.

"It's always nerve-wracking constructing a scene anyway, so then you add something intimate to it and it's very vulnerable," he said.

Setting the tone for the film, Babygirl opens with a close-up of Kidman as she fails to achieve an orgasm with her husband, launching her search for satisfaction elsewhere.

"The huge orgasm gap ... still exists, people. Take note, men," Reijn said to laughs, adding that she hoped her movie would "function as a tribute to self-love and liberation".
