Hollywood's screenwriters' strike was a major talking point on the first day of the Cannes Film Festival as the jury spoke in support of the writers. Ruben Ostlund, head of this year's Cannes festival jury, said Tuesday he supports the screenwriters' strike. "I think it's great that people have a strong collegial feeling so you can go out and have a strike," said the two-time Palme d'Or winner.

Taking such action was "how you can change the conditions of your profession. I am definitely, yeah... go!"

The writer's strike in Hollywood began on May 3 after negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and major US studios and streaming services failed.

Ostlund was not the only jury member to speak in support. US actor and director Paul Dano, one of the eight members on Ostlund's jury and married to actress and screenwriter Zoe Kazan, also voiced his support.

"My wife is currently picketing with our six-month-old strapped to her chest and I will go be there with her on the picket line when I get home from here" said Dano who was recently seen in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans.
The thousands of picketing writers in Hollywood say they are striking for better compensation in a field that has been disrupted by streaming.

As for the mood Ostlund hopes to foster among his jury as they deliberate the 21 films in competition, he stressed there would be no rules and no holding back.

"When it comes to running the jury, you try to create a certain type of atmosphere where people don't try to be smart all the time," he said.

"People shouldn't be scared of saying what their gut feeling is if you have a jury atmosphere where everyone is trying to be... intellectual, smarter than the other... you are missing out on something." The Cannes Film Festival will run until May 27.

Following French actress Adèle Haenel's announcement of her departure from the French film industry, Thierry Fremaux, the chief of the Cannes Film Festival, has responded by rejecting her criticisms. Haenel had accused French director Christophe Ruggia of sexually harassing her over a span of years, claiming that Cannes and other pillars of the French film industry are willing to protect their abusive leaders.

Fremaux strongly disagreed with Haenel's remarks, stating that they were "clearly untrue." He highlighted the festival's increased representation of films directed by women this year and its decision not to screen Woody Allen's latest film.

"In my life, I abide by a single principle," Fremaux stated. "It is the freedom to think, the freedom to express oneself, and the freedom to act within the confines of the law."

Haenel's criticisms have reignited discussions surrounding the #MeToo movement at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious film festivals. Harvey Weinstein, a prominent presence in Cannes for many years, was accused of several instances of sexual abuse that reportedly occurred during the festival.

Each year, Indian cinema has its fair share of representation.
Harrison Ford starrer Indiana Jones and The Dial Of Destiny is set to feature a 25-minute long flashback sequence wherein Ford will be seen playing a 35-year-old with the help of cutting-edge technology for a grand opening scene. Director James Mangold has opened up about Harrison Ford’s de-aging process in the film.

On the advancement in technology that is enabling the de-aging process, director James Mangold said, “We had hundreds of hours of footage of him in close-ups, in mediums, in wides, in every kind of lighting, night and day, I could shoot Harrison on a Monday as, you know, a 79-year-old playing a 35- year-old, and I could see dailies by Wednesday with his head already replaced”.

Sharing the goal of depicting two contrasting realities from the past and the present, James Mangold added, "It was an incredible technology, and, in many ways, I just didn’t think about it. I just focused on shooting what’s (approximately) a 25-minute opening extravaganza that was my chance to just let it rip.

"The goal was to give the audience a full-bodied taste of what they missed so much. Because then when the movie lands in 1969, they’re going to have to make an adjustment to what it is now, which is different from what it was."

The film written by Kanu Behl and Atika Chohan, is an exploration of sexual dynamics within a family, and the deep dystopian fractures created in modern India fast shrinking into pigeon-holed spaces.

The film was developed at ‘PJLF Three Rivers residency program - in Italy, with the prestigious ‘Cinema du Monde’ film fund backing it. The film was also part of the FBR section of the Viewing Room at NFDC’s Film Bazaar, 2022.

Kanu Behl, the writer-director of the film says, “Agra has been a deeply personal and difficult exploration for me, a deep dive into the inner entrails of desire and male sexual repression, and an attempt to understand the hoodoo. I’m overjoyed that the film is beginning its journey at Director’s Fortnight and I hope it opens a conversation around sexuality and the ‘homes’ we choose to live in, as it reaches a wider audience. ”

Actor Rahul Roy says, “I was so excited when I read the script of Agra because it spoke about things that had been knots within me for years. As we filmed it and I lived each day with my character, I burned and exhumed those knots and the journey became a transformative experience. I’m so excited to share this special film with the world. ”

The plot of Agra

The film narrates the story of Guru (25), a sexually repressed young boy, lives in a small house in Agra. He sleeps in the same room as his mother, and on the upper floor, his father lives with a mistress. In an already tiny house, the only available space is the terrace on the upper floor. Guru insists that he loves Mala, an imaginary girl, and will marry her and live with her in a room on the terrace just like his father does with his mistress.

Agra then becomes the odyssey of a young Indian man’s sexual coming of age as he goes from courting an imaginary girl; to sex chatting with an unknown girl online; to finally bedding a 40-year-old cripple woman and ‘falling in love with her’, ending up having sex with for the first time.

Apart from Agra, Anurag Kashyap's Kennedy will also be screened at the prestigious film festival which is taking place in Cannes, France from May 14 onwards.

” Actor Rahul Roy says, “I was so excited when I read the script of Agra because it spoke about things that had been knots within me for years. As we filmed it and I lived each day with my character, I burned and exhumed those knots and the journey became a transformative experience. I’m so excited to share this special film with the world. ” The plot of Agra The film narrates the story of Guru (25), a sexually repressed young boy, lives in a small house in Agra.
