<p>Argentine soccer great Diego&nbsp;Maradona&nbsp;is set to miss out on the Cannes premiere of a documentary about his life and career, due to "a shoulder injury requiring medical attention", the film's publicists said on Sunday.</p>

<p>Movie stars including Salma Hayek and Eva Longoria celebrated the role of women in cinema at a glitzy gala in Cannes on Sunday, amid a drive to promote gender equality in the industry that is still falling short of what many campaigners hoped for.</p>

<p>Cannes' film festival, the world's most important cinema showcase, last year signed a pledge to get an equal number of men and women in its top management by 2020 that is gradually gathering momentum at similar European and US&nbsp;events.</p>

<p>Actors and filmmakers participating in this year's edition have joined activists in warning that while industry attitudes were changing, progress was still slow.</p>

<p>"We have so much work to do and I just think we can't let up," Longoria told journalists at the Women in Motion dinner at Cannes, part of a program set up by luxury group Kering to push for gender equality in cinema.</p>

<p>"Whenever we see something improving we can't just say 'Oh OK let's relax, the momentum's going to go that way'. It won't continue to go that way, we have to continue to change the industry for ourselves."</p>

<p>Chinese actress Gong Li, the star of "Farewell My Concubine", was awarded a prize for her career at the event.</p>

<p>At Cannes, four women are contending for this year's top Palme d'Or film prize, including Franco-Senegalese Mati Diop and France's Celine Sciamma, out of 21 entries - or just under 20 per cent of the total.</p>

<p>Elsewhere, the proportion has sometimes been higher, with over 40 per cent of the films competing at Berlin's festival in February made by women.</p>

<p>"We hear a lot about how times are changing and improving, and it's true. The idea is to support that trend. (But) the figures still don't look good," said Delphyne Besse, a film sales specialist and one of the founders of 50/50 by 2020, the collective behind the gender parity pledge signed by Cannes.</p>

<p>Of the 47 film festivals that have so far backed the drive globally, 38 per cent have female heads, according to the lobby group's figures.</p>

<p>Industry insiders said the slow progress was reflected in everything from the short shrift female directors still got in the media to their under-representation at industry events.</p>

<p>"Women have been making films for 11 decades now," British actress and star of zombie movie 'The Dead Don't Die'&nbsp;Tilda Swinton told a news conference earlier this week.</p>

<p>"There are countless films by women. The question is why don't we know about them," she said, adding that even obituaries for female filmmakers tended to be dwarfed by those dedicated to men.</p>

<p>Cannes' organisers have said they were not planning to introduce quotas dictating the gender balance of the films selected to compete at the festival.</p>

<p>"Cannes is only at the end of the chain. This needs to start with encouragement at film schools," festival director Thierry Fremaux said last week.</p>

<p>The cinema showcase is looking to include more women its board, however, and the festival jury this year was more balanced.</p>

<p>'Atlantics'&nbsp;director Diop said festivals were still a logical starting point to highlight women's work in the industry.</p>

<p>"It starts with the films, there is no festival without films, so it is an extraordinary exhibition that will give the films much bigger exposure," she told Reuters in an interview.</p>

<p>Earlier on Friday, the Missouri House passed a bill banning abortions after eight weeks, except in few cases pertaining to a medical emergency.</p>

<p>The state's Republican governor, Mike Parson, is expected to sign the measure soon.</p>

<p>"In the US&nbsp;what is happening now is part of a kind of global reaction to women's rights," Solanas told THR.</p>

<p>"I feel like little by little we are moving towards equality between men and women, and this is a pushback, a last reaction."</p>

<p>Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, long-time collaborators of director Pedro Almodovar, turned up the glamour on the red carpet at Cannes on Friday for the Spaniard's latest outing, a contender for the top prize at the film festival.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wearing a vintage-style white lace and navy dress, with a circle skirt, Cruz headed up the Croisette's famed steps for the international premiere of 'Pain And Glory', alongside Banderas and the filmmaker, who was decked out in an all-black ensemble and sunglasses.</p>

<p>The autobiographical tale stars Banderas as Almodovar 's tormented alter ego - a film director looking back at his childhood and past romances, and reflecting on his life's work - while Cruz plays his mother at the time of his youth.</p>

<p>"There's a lot of me in the movie. But as soon as you start writing, fiction takes over," Almodovar, who headed up the jury at Cannes' cinema showcase in 2017, told Canal+ TV on his way into the screening.</p>

<p>The film, well-received by critics, has already premiered in Spain.</p>

<p>Almodovar's movies helped propel the acting duo to global stardom.</p>

<p>The director, meanwhile, has won two Oscars - with 'All About My Mother' awarded the best foreign language film in 2000, and for the best original screenplay with 'Talk to Her' in 2003 - but never the top Palme D'Or at Cannes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mati Diop, the first woman of African descent to compete for the top prize at Cannes with a haunting film about migrants, said on Friday the label made her "sad" but showed how much work there was to do for equality in the movie industry.</p>

<p>The director- whose debut feature film 'Atlantics', set in Senegal, evokes the impact of migrant journeys on those left behind-&nbsp;said she was also driven by a desire to see black lives represented on screen.</p>

<p>"It was really a need, a very urgent need," Diop told a news conference. "It wasn't the only motor of the film, because it is not a motor that is enough to write a story, but at the end of the script, I was like 'Now I want to see these black actors' ... and a lot of people need that."</p>

<p>The French-Senegalese filmmaker took an unusual path to get there, working with a cast of first-time actors-&nbsp;some of whom were approached on the streets of Dakar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Diop added that she was moved when seeing films with black stars, including those of 'Get Out'&nbsp;director Jordan Peele.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Developed from Diops 2009 documentary short about a Senegalese man who died making a sea crossing to Spain, 'Atlantics'&nbsp;shifts the focus to the women left behind as a group of men disappear on their journey.</p>

<p>Praised by critics for its absorbing atmosphere, the film is richly poetic, lingering on the waves crashing onto the coast-&nbsp;&nbsp;menacingly at times, pulling viewers into a trance at others.</p>

<p>"I think the first idea was to turn the ocean into an accomplice to people leaving by sea. I saw the ocean as a supernatural force which swallowed up youth into its depth," Diop said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The movie also has other mystical moments, as the narrative takes a ghostly turn.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Diop and three other female directors-&nbsp;Jessica Hausner, Celine Sciamma and Justine Triet- were picked as contenders in Cannes'&nbsp;main competition this year, out of 21 entries.</p>

<p>The Elton John biopic 'Rocketman'&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/elton-johns-rocketman-gets-cannes-film-festival-liftoff-219100">took the Cannes film festival by storm Thursday</a>, with the warts-and-all movie about his wild rock 'n' roll years wowing critics.</p>

<p>The extended standing ovation for the film brought its director Dexter Fletcher and star Taron Egerton -- who plays the singer -- to tears.</p>

<p>With some critics saying it was among the most searingly honest biopic in years, Variety's Stuart Oldham tweeted minutes after the end that "'Rocketman is fantastic, a musical drama that hits all the right notes, especially the sad ones."</p>

<p>John could not hide his joy at the reception, hugging the cast and his longtime lyricist and friend Bernie Taupin, who is a major character in the film.</p>

<p>The 72-year-old British musical megastar seemed to have difficulty walking as he posed for the paparazzi on the red carpet before the premiere.</p>

<p>Cannes director Thierry Fremaux had hinted that Sir Elton, who has admitted he nearly died from a rare viral infection two years ago, might play before the film.</p>

<p>"A piano will be hidden behind the curtain," he told reporters, with the star also rumoured to perform at a private party afterwards in the French Riviera resort.</p>

<p>He did not perform at the premiere but took part in a sing-along at the beach.</p>

<p>Wearing a dark suit with "Rocket Man" written in silver sequins on the back, he wiped away a tear under his heart-shaped sequined sunglasses as the lights went down in the cinema for the film to begin.</p>

<p>Taupin put a hand on his knee and smiled to reassure him.</p>

<p>Earlier Sir Elton laughed off what looked like a problem with his hip when he appeared for a photocall in an eggshell-blue suit and matching diamond-encrusted glasses.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instead, the showman joked with husband David Furnish -- who produced the film -- and stuck out his tongue at actor Taron Egerton who plays him.</p>

<p>The singer said last year he would be retiring from touring after a three-year farewell tour.</p>

<p><strong>- 'Hard-hitting and truthful' -</strong></p>

<p>Furnish said the movie, which was a decade in the making, is brutally frank about the singer's struggles with drugs, alcohol and most of all, his sexuality.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We didn't want to compromise the fact we felt it had to be hard-hitting and truthful," he said.</p>

<p>"I think we would have got a lot more interest (from studios)... if we'd been willing to produce a more sanitised version of Elton's life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That never appealed to Elton," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"His life has had incredible moments of lightness but also moments of real darkness. We wanted to be very honest about those and not gloss them over."</p>

<p>Although the film is also directed by Dexter Fletcher -- who was drafted in to save the Freddie Mercury biopic 'Bohemian Rhapsody'&nbsp;-- and has a thumping jukebox soundtrack, the parallels end there, the filmmaker insisted.</p>

<p>That near-billion-dollar blockbuster was criticised for drawing a veil over much of the Queen frontman's private life, something that cannot be said of "Rocketman", Fletcher told AFP.</p>

<p><strong>- 'The beauty to be honest' -</strong></p>

<p>"Elton is a gay man and we know that, we also know Freddie was gay," Fletcher added.</p>

<p>The singer, who helped campaign for gay marriage, "gave us his blessing and the strength and the beauty to be honest. It's real".</p>

<p>While parts of Elton John's five-decade career was lived in a hazy whirl of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, he set up his AIDS foundation in 1992, months after his friend Mercury died of the disease.</p>

<p>It has since raised more than $400 million (357 million euros).</p>

<p>Fletcher said that despite the huge success of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', his real passion was always for 'Rocketman'.</p>

<p>"I did what I had to do (on the Freddie Mercury film) but really my focus was always 'Rocketman'."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fletcher said the film is not "an official biography," but instead an expression of John's own memories which, given his years of hard partying, were sometimes a blur.</p>

<p>"We are inside Elton's memories of his life... things get mixed up and confused," said the director.</p>

<p>'Rocketman'&nbsp;centres on the flamboyant performer's relationship with his lyricist Taupin, who is played by Jamie Bell of "Billy Elliot" fame.</p>

<p>British actor Richard Madden ('Game of Thrones') is his lover and former manager John Reid.</p>

"We didn't want to compromise the fact we felt it had to be hard-hitting and truthful," he said. "I think we would have got a lot more interest (from studios)... if we'd been willing to produce a more sanitised version of Elton's life. "That never appealed to Elton," he said. "His life has had incredible moments of lightness but also moments of real darkness. We wanted to be very honest about those and not gloss them over." Although the film is also directed by Dexter Fletcher -- who was drafted in to save the Freddie Mercury biopic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' -- and has a thumping jukebox soundtrack, the parallels end there, the filmmaker insisted. That near-billion-dollar blockbuster was criticised for drawing a veil over much of the Queen frontman's private life, something that cannot be said of "Rocketman", Fletcher told AFP. - 'The beauty to be honest' - "Elton is a gay man and we know that, we also know Freddie was gay," Fletcher added. The singer, who helped campaign for gay marriage, "gave us his blessing and the strength and the beauty to be honest. It's real". While parts of Elton John's five-decade career was lived in a hazy whirl of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, he set up his AIDS foundation in 1992, months after his friend Mercury died of the disease. It has since raised more than $400 million (357 million euros). Fletcher said that despite the huge success of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', his real passion was always for 'Rocketman'. "I did what I had to do (on the Freddie Mercury film) but really my focus was always 'Rocketman'." Fletcher said the film is not "an official biography," but instead an expression of John's own memories which, given his years of hard partying, were sometimes a blur. "We are inside Elton's memories of his life... things get mixed up and confused," said the director. 'Rocketman' centres on the flamboyant performer's relationship with his lyricist Taupin, who is played by Jamie Bell of "Billy Elliot" fame. British actor Richard Madden ('Game of Thrones') is his lover and former manager John Reid.

Deepika Padukone channels modern princess with a dash of neon vibes on day 2 at Cannes 2019

<p>In a sunny corner overlooking the yacht-filled harbour, a handful of Cannes' youngest visitors are bouncing around a vibrant-coloured carpet in the first-ever creche at the world's biggest film festival.</p>

<p>The brainchild of three film industry mothers struggling to juggle being a parent with the gruelling annual run of festivals, Le Ballon Rouge (The Red Balloon), is a light, airy room "where children are the new VIPs".</p>

<p>Kids had previously been a very rare sight at the annual celebrity-filled festival, which thrives on glitz and glamour but has done little to meet the practical needs of movers and shakers with babies or toddlers in tow.</p>

<p>But for the first time this year, the festival has opened the special day care centre to lend a hand to parents in the film industry.</p>

<p>It follows a similar nursery, "playhouse and nap room" set up at the Sundance film festival last year by the US-based Moms-in-Film group, which had railed at the lack of child-friendly facilities at Cannes.</p>

<p>- 'It takes women to get together' -</p>

<p>It's the morning of the opening of the Cannes creche and a handful of youngsters are playing with soft toys, while others try to nap in a space which also has fenced-off outdoor areas shaded by parasols.</p>

<p>Three young nannies and a nurse from the Paris-based service "Nanny Please" are on hand to sing, colour, draw and make lunch, helped by two local volunteers, with the children housed in a pavilion by the harbour.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coming from Los Angeles for her first visit to the Cannes festival, Gail Greaves said she had been planning on hiring someone to watch her two-year-old daughter Arabella.</p>

<p>But with the festival running for 12 days, going private can quickly get expensive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"You can't really do much when they're crying," she said. "I was going to bring a nanny or get one locally but you're looking at 20 to 30 euros ($22-34) an hour."</p>

<p>But searching online she found Le Ballon Rouge and quickly booked a place. Accredited festival-goers can obtain special passes for their children to use the daycare service which is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and costs 50 euros per day.</p>

<p>"This is amazing! They have all of this -- and other kids to play with," Greaves smiled. "It takes women coming together to make something happen."</p>

<p>Three film industry professionals with young children came up with the idea a few months ago while sharing tips about how to handle the work-life balance. Together they founded "Parenting at Film Festivals".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We were just comparing notes on how hard it was to be a parent at a festival," said Michelle Carey, an Australian film programmer and one of the three women who founded the group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During last year's festival, she had to dash back to her hotel room some 20 minutes away just to feed her infant son, which was both difficult and impractical. And she wasn't alone.</p>

<p>- 50/50 push for equality -</p>

<p>"In January, we started talking with other friends in the industry, just sharing tips, then at the Berlin film festival we met several festival representatives," she told AFP as her two-year-old son raced around the room giggling.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coming up with a plan, the three approached the festival organisers and Cannes' sprawling film market and by April, the initiative was in place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They have also set up a baby room inside the Palais des Festivals, where the red carpet premieres take place, offering a private space for mums to feed and change their babies.</p>

<p>"It's particularly good for young mothers who may be returning to work after giving birth," Carey said.</p>

<p>So far, 50 parents have signed up, with 17 children booked in, Carey said. One of the parents is a member of one of the festival prize juries.</p>

<p>The infrastructure was funded by the film market while the childcare costs were raised through a crowdfunding initiative with contributions from more than 12 companies and institutions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Supported by the 5050/2020 collective, which is pushing for an equal place for women in the film industry, the move comes a year after Cannes signed up to a gender equality pledge.</p>

<p>But Carey said the initiative to offer parent-friendly services was entirely led by her and her fellow mothers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We went to them and offered a solution," she told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If we hadn't gone to them, they wouldn't have been able to do it themselves."</p>

<p>Filmmaker Ladj Ly urged French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday to watch his thriller about a chaotic police patrol, in the running for the top award at Cannes, as an insight into France's "yellow vest" street protests.</p>

<p>Set in a Paris suburb, 'Les Miserables'&nbsp;tells the story of three policemen who scramble to cover their tracks and keep the peace after their arrest of a local teen spiral out of control and is recorded by a passing drone.</p>

<p>Ly's pulsating debut, selected for the main Palme d'Or competition, comes six months into a wave of sometimes violent French street demonstrations against high living costs and the perceived indifference of the ruling class.</p>

<p>The protests have drawn attention to police tactics including their use of flash-ball riot control guns.</p>

<p>"Today, with the 'yellow vests', you feel like people are just discovering all this police violence," Ly told a news conference after the movie's premiere on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"We've been 'yellow vests' for more than 20 years," said the 37-year-old director, who grew up in one of Paris's tough suburbs and based the film on a real arrest that he had once filmed. "We've been getting flash-balls in the face for over 20 years."</p>

<p>"We would like Mr Macron to watch this film," Ly added, saying little had changed for kids growing up in the "banlieues" since a wave of rioting in 2005.</p>
