In the 22-minute video, Ag Ghaly urged local Muslims to support his fighters against the “treacherous governments” of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger and the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, which is active in Mali.&nbsp;

Notably, these countries have been plagued by jihadist insurgencies while their militaries have seized power through coups and have broken alliances with countries in the West, including France.&nbsp;

While jihadists are responsible for almost daily attacks on civilians and the army in these countries, Ag Ghaly in the video supposedly portrayed himself as a defender of the oppressed, according to a report by AFP.&nbsp;

The leader of the al-Qaeda-linked group also went on to criticise the Malian Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga saying. The “Islamic cause is totally incompatible with your project,” he asid, adding that the need for governance under the Islamic law “cannot be compromised”.&nbsp;

Notably, AFP citing Malian commentators and officials said that Ag Ghaly is considered as an unavoidable figure in efforts to end the country’s prolonged crisis.

The Malian judicial officers also cited “extremely serious” acts that “are likely to constitute the alleged offences of criminal conspiracy, acts of terrorism, money laundering and financing of terrorism, illegal possession of weapons of war and munitions, and complicity in these same acts.”

The government also said that the alleged perpetrators "had the sinister intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and plunging the country into chaos".

Burkina Faso's military govt says it foiled coup attempt

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday (September 21) approved a $300 million loan agreement for Burkina Faso to combat poverty and bolster the economy.&nbsp;

The IMF executive board has granted a&nbsp;four-year loan agreement worth around $302 million under its&nbsp;Extended Credit Facility (ECF) to the West African nation. The first tranche of $31.8 million in aid will be disbursed immediately, the global monetary body said.&nbsp;

IMF said the credit line will help "create fiscal space for priority spending, strengthen resilience to shocks while reducing poverty, and bolster fiscal discipline, transparency and governance".&nbsp;

"It will also help close financing gaps reflecting tight financial conditions, large fiscal deficits, debt vulnerabilities, food insecurity, and fragile security conditions," said the IMF.&nbsp;

IMF Deputy Managing Director Kenji Okamura, commenting on the 48-month-long loan&nbsp;agreement, said the priority lay in changing the challenging&nbsp;macroeconomic outlook of the country.&nbsp;

“For the country’s long-term development process, it remains essential to sustain structural reforms to foster economic growth and diversification as well as to reduce poverty. In this context, further efforts to improve the business environment, reinforce governance and anti-corruption efforts, and address the security crisis are critical," said&nbsp;Okamura.&nbsp;

<h2>Why Alliance of Sahel States is significant?</h2>

The alliance announcement succeeds the military pact signed between the three countries in August to allow Mali and Burkina Faso to send troops into Niger's territory in the event of military aggression against its new rulers.

The development is significant amid growing cooperation between 15-nation ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) bloc and the warnings of military intervention that it asserted after military's takeover of power in Niger in July.&nbsp;

The agreement also calls for the three nations to take joint action against terrorist groups operating in their countries and to secure their borders.&nbsp;

For more than a decade, Africa's Sahel region — which includes countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Nigeria — has been infested with jihadist insurgencies contributing in their overall instability.&nbsp;

These jihadist insurgencies are largely perpetrated by terrorist networks linked to the Islamic State and the Al Qaeda.

"This alliance will be a combination of military and economic efforts between the three countries," Mali's Defence Minister Abdoulaye Diop told journalists.&nbsp;

"Our priority is the fight against terrorism in the three countries."

<h2>What does it mean for French interests in the region?</h2>

The alliance between three West African states, all ruled by military juntas and former French colonies, has been formalised amid souring ties between the three states and France.&nbsp;

All three signatory nations of the newly-formed Alliance of Sahel States were also the members of France-supported G5 Sahel alliance joint force with Chad and Mauritania being the&nbsp;other two allies. The G5 Sahel alliance, apart from its stated goals related to poverty alleviation, was also aimed to tackle terror groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.&nbsp;

The G5 Sahel Alliance, now largely dormant, was launched in 2017 by France, Germany and the European Union.&nbsp;

Niger’s military leaders have unilaterally cancelled military agreements under the G5 Sahel Alliance that allowed French forces to fight jihadists in the region, giving the former colonial power only a month to pull out its 1,500 troops. France, however, ignored the ultimatum and demands for its ambassador to leave.

Mali left the G5 Sahel Alliance after a military coup. Even before the military coup in Niger, the democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum said in May last year that the force was "dead" following Mali's departure.

France was forced to withdraw its troops from Mali and Burkina Faso. It remains in a tense standoff with the junta that seized power in Niger after the new military rulers asked it to withdraw its troops and its ambassador.

Mali has also asked the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA to leave the country.

<h2>Who takes what from the newly forged alliance?</h2>

For Niger, the alliance provides a cover of security from the warnings of military intervention from ECOWAS.

But in security terms, Mali is set to gain the most from the alliance in the immediate future. &nbsp;

Mali, in addition to fighting terrorists linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State group, has also seen a resumption of hostilities by predominantly Tuareg armed groups over the past few weeks.

The escalation of these armed tensions risks stretching Mali's army to its limits.&nbsp;

While Mali's junta claims that it has managed to successfully turn around a dire security situation, independent reports have claimed the quite opposite.

Burkina Faso, under Ibrahim Tarore (34), is expected to lead the newly-formed alliance, due to semblance of stability that the world's youngest leader has managed to assert in the country, according to Radio Omega.

The army general staff released a statement and said that the attack was carried out on Monday. Seventeen soldiers and 36 civilian volunteers for the army were among the dead.&nbsp;

The army added that the unit was deployed in the town of Koumbari in Yatenga province in order to help resettlement of residents who were forced out of the area by jihadists more than a couple of years ago.

About 30 security force members were injured. As the forces retaliated, several attackers were "neutralised" and their combat equipment was destroyed.

Operations are still underway in the area.

Last year, two military coups took place in Burkina Faso. The coups were triggered by failure to tackle jihadist insurgency which has claimed thousands of lives.

Military coups in neighbouring Mali and Niger also find roots in anger against the insurgency.

According to data cited by the Armed Conflict Location &amp; Event Data Project (ACLED), more than 16,000 civilians, troops and police have been killed in jihadist attacks in Burkina Faso since 2015. More than 5,000 have been killed this year alone.

Burkina Faso has also witnessed the internal displacement of two million people. This has made the situation one of the worst crises in Africa.

On June 26, three attacks took place in the Centre-North province. Thirty-one soldiers along with 40 auxiliaries were killed in the attack.&nbsp;

In the month of August, five police and around 20 others were killed in Centre-East province.

The authorities say that more than 65 jihadists were "neutralised" between August 7 and September 1.

The country's strongman is Captain Ibrahim Traore, who took power in September 2022 at the age of just 34, making him the world's youngest leader outside of royalty.&nbsp;

Traore has given an assurance that the country will see a return to democracy with presidential elections by July 2024.

After the military junta took over the country, relations between it and France broke down. France, a former colonial power in the region, was helping the under-equipped Burkinabe army but French troops had to quit the country.

Traore last week held talks with a Russian delegation on development and military cooperation.&nbsp;

On Monday, his foreign minister, Olivia Rouamba, held talks in Tehran with President Ebrahim Raissi in which she said she hoped for "stronger bilateral cooperation" with Iran.&nbsp;

Five Burkinabe police officers have died in an attack in the centre-east of Burkina Faso, with at least 40 of the attackers "neutralised" when the authorities launched a counter-attack, the army said Sunday.

The attack occurred on Saturday afternoon when members of a police mobile intervention force were targeted near Diougo-Yourga, in Koulpelogo province near the Togo border, the army said.

That attack "cost the lives of five police officers. Four others were evacuated and treated for injuries", the military added in a statement.

"In response, at least forty terrorists were neutralised and equipment seized," it said.

An attack by unidentified assailants left at least 34 civilian volunteers and six soldiers dead on Sunday, the local government said in a statement. The attack was supposedly carried out by jihadists in northern Burkina Faso. A detachment of soldiers and civilian volunteers "was the target of an attack by unidentified armed men on Saturday at about 4 pm,"&nbsp;the statement said.&nbsp;

The attack happened in the village of Aorema near the town of Ouahigouya, not far from the border with Mali. This area is overrun by Islamist groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State that have been repeatedly carrying out attacks in the region.

There is no confirmation of who was behind the attack. The latest attack in Burkina Faso comes nine days after gunmen killed 44 people in the villages of Kourakou and Tondobi in the north of the West African country.

Civilians are being encouraged by the government to join local defence forces to try and control eight years of violence in which thousands of people have died and millions have been forced to flee their homes.

The country saw two coups last year by the military which stresses that it will retake control of the country.

The region has been marred by violence since 2012 when Islamists hijacked a Tuareg separatist uprising in Mali. The violence later spread into neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger and threatens to destabilise coastal countries further afield.

With jihadist violence rising in Burkina Faso, the US is preparing to send long-term assistance to neighbouring countries of Ivory Coast, Benin and Togo. Washington believes that violence could spill into coastal West Africa which could destabilise the region. "It's a significant and burgeoning threat. Attacks have mounted since the start of this year, and have killed over 100 in the last weeks, AFP reported.&nbsp;

As Burkina Faso's ruling junta demanded the military leave within four weeks, France said last month that it will withdraw its contingent of hundreds of soldiers stationed there, said an AFP report.

The request was made just a few days after Burkina's Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyelem de Tembela said that Russia would make a "reasonable" strong ally in the fight against jihadists.

At least 19 people, including nine volunteers, have been killed in two separate attacks in jihadist-torn Burkina Faso, local officials and security sources on Monday claimed.&nbsp;

A senior militia official told AFP that seven members of the VDP volunteers force were killed in a mass attack on Thursday in the northwestern village of Dembo.&nbsp;

The official said that the attack in Dembo was carried out by around 100 armed men, who surged into the village in pickups on bikes and opened firing.&nbsp;
