A report claiming that authorities in the West African nation of Burkina Faso ordered hundreds of French troops to depart within a month prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to announce Sunday that he was awaiting "clarifications" from the new junta leader of that nation. With junta leader Ibrahim Traore absent from the nation's capital, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's message was "confusing," according to Macron at a news conference in Paris.

France-Burkina Faso Ties: France asks Burkina Faso to clarify troop departure reports

Following Mali, Burkina Faso has also ordered hundreds of French troops to depart the West African country within a month as the government seeks to end the French military’s presence on Burkinabe soil. The announcement was made on Wednesday, National broadcaster RTB reported on Saturday citing the official Agence d’Information du Burkina.

The development comes amidst massive protests in the capital Ouagadougou last week, calling for the ouster of the French ambassador and the closure of a French military base north of the capital.

The decision was welcomed by the protesters on Saturday,

“Despite their presence on Burkinabe soil with huge equipment and their power at the intelligence level, they couldn’t help us defeat terrorism,” Passamde Sawadogo, a prominent civil society activist and reggae singer, told AP news agency.

Four attacks by militants kill 30 people in Burkina Faso, claim security sources

Confirming earlier reports, the government said on Monday that around 50 women searching for food were kidnapped by militants in Burkina Faso's northern province of Soum on January 12 and 13. The mass kidnapping was the first such instance since the insurgency spread to Burkina Faso from neighbouring Mali in 2015.

While Westerners and locals are occasionally captured, women had not previously been abducted in such numbers.

The women were kidnapped by armed men from two locations near the town of Aribinda while they were picking fruit.

"Searching has started with the aim of finding all these innocent victims safe and sound," the government said in a statement.

The people in the region have been facing dire living situation. Relatives of the women told Reuters there wasn't enough food to feed their families in the village, which is why the women were out scouring the bushes for fruits, leaves and seeds which they could feed the children.

Burkina Faso is one of several West African countries battling a violent insurgency linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State. The groups have seized large expanses of territory over the past decade in the region.

According to the United Nations, agriculture in the area has taken a hit as thousands of people have died due to the violence and more than 2.7 million displaced across the Sahel, resulting in rising hunger levels.

Insurgents have blockaded parts of the arid north in recent months, causing acute food shortages, and it has become increasingly dangerous to deliver supplies to trapped citizens.

A 150-vehicle convoy taking supplies to the northern town of Djibo, the capital of Soum, was attacked by militants in September, killing dozens of soldiers.

The US State Department said it was deeply concerned by the abduction of the women.

"Those abducted must be returned safely to their loved ones immediately and unconditionally, and those responsible should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement.

"Women can walk up to four kilometre (into the bush) to look for food," said one villager in Aribinda.

The villager added that the men were too scared to venture far from their homes for fear of being shot by jihadists. "That is why the women were kidnapped," the villager said.

Burkina Faso witnessed two military coups last year as people are frustrated with the authorities' failure to restore security and protect civilians.

Burkina Faso: Government confirms militants have kidnapped 50 women, search initiated

50 women have been abducted by suspected jihadists in northern Burkina Faso. Meanwhile, a former Female Afghan MP was shot dead in Kabul. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: All about the insurgency in Burkina Faso

Fifty women were abducted by suspected Jihadists in northern Burkina Faso. People familiar with the developments told the news agency AFP on Sunday (January 15) that roughly 40 women were abducted about a dozen kilometres southeast of the Arbinda town on Thursday and about 20 others were abducted on Friday to the north of the town, with some escaping in the meantime. Local officials who confirmed these abductions said the army and its civilian authorities carried out unsuccessful sweeps of the area.

Two Arbinda residents divulged details about the abductions. One resident told AFP on Sunday that on Thursday, the women got together with their carts to go and gather leaves and wild fruits in the bush as there was nothing left to eat.

Another resident, a male, said that when the women did not come back on Thursday evening, "we thought that their carts had had a problem. But three survivors came back to tell us what happened." This resident said that on Friday, eight kilometres north of Arbinda, about 20 women who were not informed of the first abduction, were in turn taken. "In both groups, some women managed to escape and returned to the village on foot. We believe that the kidnappers took them to their bases," he added.
The commune of Arbinda is located in the Sahel region of northern Burkina Faso, an area under blockade by jihadist groups and with limited food supplies.

These abductions come after nine people were killed in a mosque attack in Goulgountou village of Sahel on Wednesday when suspected jihadists arrived on motorcycles and herded worshippers inside (mosque). "They separated the women, children and elderly and then made sermons to try to convince worshippers of abandoning their form of faith," a witness told AFP, adding "A discussion even started up with the imam, and because he refused he was executed." At least five countries conducted general or parliamentary elections, some ushering in new faces and changing the course for a fresh political future, while others do not seem to let go of their old guard. Apart from gunning for the top offices, the continent did suffer setbacks as economies took a nosedive because of various factors.

Burkina Faso: At least three soldiers and eight civilians killed in ambush, death toll set to rise

Burkina Faso said on Saturday that a process to pick a transitional president to serve ahead of elections would be held next week following a coup by disaffected military officers against a ruling junta.

"In view of the adoption of the transition charter, a national meeting will be convened on October 14 and 15," said the decree signed by Burkina Faso's new strongman, Captain Ibrahim Traore, who took power a week ago and was named interim president.

Earlier this week, Traore agreed to respect democratic transition timeline. The agreement had taken place between his predecessor and West Africa regional bloc ECOWAS.

Traore said Burkina Faso would "respect the dynamic compromise" agreed with ECOWAS in July to restore constitutional order in 24 months.

He also said the country would honour its international commitments, particularly regarding the protection of human rights, and would collaborate with ECOWAS evaluation mechanisms.

The ECOWAS mediator who headed the delegation, former Niger president Mahamadou Issoufou, on Tuesday said he was satisfied with the exchanges.

Traore led the coup that ousted military leader Paul-Henri Damiba, who had seized power in a previous coup in January and promised ECOWAS to restore civilian rule by July 2024.

Burkina Faso to select transitional president, says decree

Captain Ibrahim Traore was appointed as president of Burkina Faso on Wednesday, according to an official statement, after the West African country's second coup in less than nine months.

The impoverished Sahel nation plunged into renewed turmoil at the weekend when Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba -- who had seized power in January -- was toppled by newly emerged rival Traore, leading a faction of disgruntled junior officers.

It was the latest putsch in the Sahel region much of which, like Burkina Faso, is battling a growing Islamist insurgency.

Traore has been appointed as "Head of State, Supreme Head of the Armed Forces", according to the official statement read out on national television by spokesman for the ruling junta Captain Kiswendsida Farouk Azaria Sorgho.

The statement said that Traore would now be the "guarantor of national independence, territorial integrity... and continuity of the State."

Damiba fled to Togo following the two-day standoff, which was defused by religious and community leaders.

Burkina is struggling with a seven-year-old jihadist campaign that has claimed thousands of lives, forced nearly two million people to flee their homes and left more than a third of the country outside government control.

Swelling anger within the armed forces prompted Damiba's coup against the elected president in January.

Appointing himself transitional head of state, Damiba had vowed to make security the country's top priority -- but after a brief lull the attacks revived, claiming hundreds of lives.

Delegates from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) wrapped up a fact-finding mission Tuesday and held meetings with religious and traditional leaders and Traore.

Traore said the ECOWAS visit was to "make contact with the new transition authorities" as part of the support that Burkina Faso derived from the region.

Speculation has risen that Traore may follow other fragile regimes in French-speaking Africa and forge close ties with Moscow.

The dramatic takeover coincided with violent anti-French protests and the sudden emergence of Russian flags among demonstrators.

On the streets, demonstrators' slogans included "France get out", "No to ECOWAS interference", and "Long live Russia-Burkina cooperation".

The United States has warned the junta of the risks of allying with Russia, saying they condemned "any attempt to exacerbate the current situation in Burkina Faso".

"We strongly encourage the new transitional government to adhere to the agreed-upon timeline for a return to a democratically elected, civilian-led government," a State Department spokesman said earlier this week.

Government spokesman Lionel Bilgo had said the "crisis" was based on army pay claims, and that Damiba was taking part in discussions.

During the morning, shots rang out in the Ouaga 2000 neighbourhood which houses both the presidential and military junta headquarters, an AFP video journalist said.

A resident who lives close to the presidential palace said: "I heard heavy detonations around 4:30 am and now the roads around my home have been sealed off by military vehicles."

Heavy gunfire rang out from the main military camp and some residential areas in Ouagadougou, the Burkina Faso capital, on Friday, raising fears of a second coup in eight months. A large blast was also heard near the presidential palace, Reuters reported. The country's military leader said he was in talks to restore calm.

It was not clear if the gunfire and the explosion were part of a coup attempt, but security sources say there has been frustration within the military at a lack of progress in combating Islamist militants. Gunshots and blast in Burkina Faso capital raise coup fears

The recent jihadist strike in Burkina Faso claimed the lives of approximately 11 people and left about 50 people missing, the authorities reported.

After Lt. Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba overthrew Burkina Faso's president in a coup in January, he vowed to control Islamists and violence. Even though Damiba fired his defense minister earlier this month and took charge himself, insurgents linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organisation have fueled the turmoil.

With the government's spokesperson declaring the toll to be 11 dead, an official in conversation with AFP said that the death toll may be as high as 60.

Burkina Faso: 11 killed, 50 missing after jihadist attack

At least 35 civilians were killed, and 37 others hurt after an IED struck a convoy carrying supplies in Burkina Faso's northern region, where jihadi forces are said to have stronger presence, AFP reported quoting officials.

The incident took place on Sunday in the restive north on a road between Bourzanga to Djibo, according to a statement by Sahel region governor Rodolphe Sorgo

"One of the vehicles carrying civilians hit an improvised explosive device. The provisional toll is 35 dead and 37 injured, all civilians," it said.

"The escorts quickly secured the perimeter and took measures to help the victims," the statement said, adding that the convoy had left the north for Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou.

AFP quoting a security source said that the convoy was "composed of civilians, drivers and traders".

A resident of Djibo said that "several dozen vehicles, including trucks and public transport buses" were hit.

Recently, jihadist groups staged similar attacks on arterial roads leading to the main cities in the north —Dori and Djibo. At the start of August, 15 soldiers died in the same area in a double IED blast.

Monday’s attack was carried out by jihadists suspected to have links with Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State group.

The region’s north and east areas have been the site of intense battle between Burkina's ruling junta and the jihadi terrorists.

Though the ruling junta seized power in January, at least 40 per cent of the country is outside the government's control.

On Sunday junta chief Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba during his address to the nation said that the government has intensified the army's "offensive actions" and initiated a process of dialogue with certain armed groups, through religious and local leaders.

He added that this process has enabled "several dozen young people" to lay down their arms.

35 civilians killed, 37 injured in IED blast in Burkina Faso

Seven civilians were killed in an ambush on a convoy of trucks leaving a gold mine in Burkina Faso on Friday, according to a military source and locals. Since 2015, the poor Sahel state has experienced a steady stream of deadly terrorist strikes, many of which target gold miners.

A military source reported that "a terrorist attack caused the death of at least seven civilians this morning" in Nadiabonli's eastern region. The insider further said that once a convoy from the Boungou gold mine came to a stop because of technical difficulties, it was attacked.

Residents reported eight fatalities, all of them were civilian drivers, bringing the death toll somewhat higher.

11 victims were lost in an attack on the northern gold mining town of Baliata in March by unidentified gunmen. At least 10 workers were killed just two days prior in another attack on an illegal gold mine in the northeast close to the Niger border.

In November 2019, a convoy carrying workers to the Boungou mine was ambushed, resulting in the deaths of 38 people and the three-month closure of the site by Canadian mining company Semafo.

The Taparko mine in northern Burkina Faso was shut down in April of this year, according to Russian gold company Nordgold, because it was "under terrorist threat."

Seven years on Burkina Faso insurgency claims 9 lives in the latest jihadist attack

22 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have French as their official language, with a population of 300 million people. Francophone countries are predominantly located in central and western Africa. According to Victor Lopes an economist from Standard Charter Bank, Francophone Africa constitutes 15 per cent of Africa’s GDP and receives approximately 20 per cent of foreign investments that are directed to Africa. Despite all this, South African companies are reluctant to do business in this region. However, this region is too dynamic to be ignored.

The World Bank predicted, that, by 2021, 62.5 per cent of Africa’s fastest growing economies will be in Francophone Africa. Currently, it boasts five out of the ten fastest-growing economies in Sub-Saharan Africa, namely, Côte d’Ivoire 7 per cent, Senegal 6.7 per cent, Benin 6.3 per cent, Burkina Faso 6 per cent, and Guinea 5.9 per cent. In the South African context, there is huge potential for mining and extraction of natural resources. It is an emerging mining region with countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali being earmarked as countries that will be leading the mining growth. The region is endowed with vast natural resources: Côte d'Ivoire is the leading producer of cocoa, Mali is the second largest producer of Shea nuts, DRC has the world's largest reserves of coltan and cobalt, and several countries in the region are trying to revitalize their coffee, palm oil and cotton production.

Some businesses are deterred from doing business in Francophone countries because they believe that the political volatility in the region will hinder their businesses. These issues have been taken seriously and addressed, in order to attract business in their countries. According to the 2018 World Bank's annual Ease of Doing Business report assesses that: French-speaking countries achieved especially notable results. The report recognized Togo and Côte d'Ivoire as among "the 10 economies improving the most across three or more areas measured by Ease of Doing Business in 2017/18. There are two major factors that make doing business in Francophone Africa easier. Firstly, the implementation of the Organization for Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA). OHADA is a legal system that has created homogeneousness amongst member states, which has subsequently created accountability and transparency. Secondly, there is a single currency the West and Central African CFA, these currencies are both pegged to the Euro and they offer currency stability.

The misconception that France still has a huge influence and is their main trade partner is still prevalent. There are still strong ties to France but, they are diminishing, because, the region is globalizing like other regions of the world. Statistics from UN Comtrade reveal that the French share of exports to Francophone Africa has declined steadily from 13.6 per cent of the total in 2010 to just 9.4 per cent by 2017. Moreover, many companies are also increasingly including English as a business language.

However, much of Francophone Africa is largely underdeveloped and lacks good infrastructure. It is problematic to get the resources to market, without the proper infrastructure to process or transport them. Amidst these challenges are opportunities for companies to invest in the infrastructure sector in the region and these opportunities in this region will trickle down to all sectors.

Additionally, the return of African Development Bank (AfDB) to Abidjan from Tunis was an illustration of confidence in the country and the region. The presence of the AfDB has attracted other funding agencies to have a major presence in the region. With the aforementioned information, it is vital for businesses to explore this overlooked economic jewel.
