<p>Three fire tenders were rushed to the scene and teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Fire Service were carrying out the rescue operation. The collapsed house was being repaired at the time of the accident.</p>

<p>As per reports, one person is feared dead in the incident whereas several others are admitted to the hospital in critical condition.</p>

<p>On August 1, another building collapsed in the same area. The same day, two more buildings collapsed—one in Defence Colony and two in Shastri Park, causing injuries to three people.</p>

<p>On August 2, a two-storey building in Jahangirpuri collapsed, killing three people. The same day, the wall of a school collapsed in Daryaganj, damaging several parked cars.</p>

<h2><strong>MCD’s slumber continues</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier this week, the Indian Express&nbsp;reported that the MCD is yet to complete the survey of the unsafe buildings in the city, raising concerns over the lack of monsoon preparedness.</p>

<p>Notably, MCD’s Building Department is responsible for conducting an annual safety review of buildings. The junior engineers of the MCD generally identify buildings in battered condition and direct the owners of these buildings to carry out repairs.</p>

<p>The Indian Express reported that the survey was initially slated to be completed by June. The deadline was first shifted to June 14 and then again to July 15.</p>

<p>On Thursday (Aug 8), the MCD said it was able to identify just 67 dangerous buildings so far and the full survey will still take time to get published.</p>

The junior engineers of the MCD generally identify buildings in battered condition and direct the owners of these buildings to carry out repairs. <p>“NEMA and other critical stakeholders are presently carrying out Search and Rescue operations,” it said.</p>

<p>A resident at the scene Chika Obioha told AFP he saw at least eight bodies at the site and that dozens more had been injured.</p>

<p>“Everyone is helping out to see if we can rescue more people,” he said.</p>

<p>The AFP correspondent said he saw 11 bodies in the morgue at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital and five dead taken into the mortuary at the Our Lady of Apostles Hospital in Jos.</p>

<p>A day after a four-storey building in Cameroon’s commercial hub and largest city Douala collapsed, the death toll more than doubled as&nbsp;rescue teams continued searching for survivors, said the local authorities on Monday (July 24). Dozens of people were affected by the incident, said local officials. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What do we know about the incident?</strong></h2>

<p>At least 33 people have been killed after the building collapsed, said&nbsp;Celestine Ketcha Courtes, the housing and urban development minister. She also said that more bodies were&nbsp;recovered from the rubble on Monday morning and some of those in the hospital&nbsp;succumbed to their injuries.&nbsp;<br />

According to officials, the collapse took place around 1:00 am (local time) in the north of the city. The incident occurred in Douala, in the western Littoral region of Cameroon which is also the country’s most populous city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The four-storey building located in the city’s eastern Ange Raphael neighbourhood caved in and fell onto another, smaller residential building, said local officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by BBC said distressed neighbours heard screams and frantically tried to dig people out after the collapse.&nbsp;“We heard people screaming…and struggled to help some out of the wreckage, but could not do it with our spades and (garden) hoes,” said Gaspard Ndoppo, who lives near the collapsed buildings, as per the Associated Press.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, the military’s fire brigade, the Red Cross and other rescue services were working on the scene. Officials reported that more than 200 people occupy both impacted buildings. However, it is unclear&nbsp;how many were home at the time of the collapse.</p>

<p>The reason for the building collapse was not immediately clear, however, local residents said it looked deteriorated with exposed and worn-out rods, reported Reuters. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the victims</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The city’s Laquintinie hospital said it had taken in 13 patients while two others – a girl aged three and a young woman aged 19 – had passed away, reported AFP. It added that three other children among those injured were receiving emergency paediatric treatment.&nbsp;<br />

In the update on Monday,&nbsp;Courtes said five of the more than&nbsp;20 people injured are in critical condition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua, the governor of the surrounding Littoral region, on Sunday,&nbsp;said&nbsp;that a total of 31 people were affected.&nbsp;<br />

“The casualty figures may be higher. Rescue workers, assisted by Cameroon government troops, are still digging the wreckage to see if more bodies can be recovered,” said the governor of the Littoral region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also told the press that the situation was under control and that search and rescue teams would make sure that no one remained under the rubble.</p>

<p>The building was said to be located in the Hadayek el Kobba neighbourhood, around 3.2 kilometres north of central Cairo, a densely built area of informal housing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The state-run MENA news agency reported that search and rescue teams have recovered at least nine bodies from the rubble.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, four survivors were taken to the hospital, said the news agency, but their condition was not immediately known. MENA also reported that the local authorities evacuated a neighbouring apartment building.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Local media reports said&nbsp;that the police have since cordoned off the area while rescue teams were seen looking for possible survivors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity, on Monday, announced that it will give $1,940 (60,000 Egyptian pounds) to the families of the nine victims. The ministry also said that it would deliver aid to the injured and was monitoring the damage to nearby properties due to the collapse of the building.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What caused the collapse?</strong></h2>

<p>After the initial inspection, Cairo’s deputy governor, Hossam Fawzi, said that the building collapse was caused due to the removal of a number of walls&nbsp;by one of the ground floor residents&nbsp;during earlier maintenance work, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;He added that the man has since been detained and will be investigated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rescue efforts have also been impeded as an adjoining building also suffered a partial collapse. The firefighters had to bring down eight people from the building after they had sought refuge on the roof terrace.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Several witnesses have said there was a suspicious smell of gas which could have caused the explosion. The accident has once again highlighted the city's housing standards with shoddy structures housing thousands as&nbsp;several building codes remain violated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2018, eight people were killed in the city after two dilapidated buildings in the&nbsp;Noailles district caved in.&nbsp;</p>

The Syrian Observatory for human rights says that the 10 victims were displaced from the Northern District of Afrin Civil Defense Forces and firefighters continue to search for missing people in the rubble.

Syria: At least 16 killed, including children, as building collapses in Aleppo

<p>A four-story apartment structure in Amman collapsed on Tuesday (September 13), claiming the lives of nine people, while hundreds of rescuers have been searching around for any more trapped in the debris,&nbsp;Jordanian authorities reported.</p>

<p>A security spokesman said that the initial toll, standing at six, rose to nine after rescuers discovered three more bodies on Wednesday night. He earlier stated that the teams for regional security command and gendarmerie were assisting civil defence forces.</p>

<p>A security official in conversation with AFP said that a four-month-old baby and a 45-year-old man were among the 16 who were injured in the tragedy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Without giving a precise number, a spokesperson for the civil defence service claimed that there were still a lot of people trapped in the collapsed building.</p>

<p>The public prosecutor in Jordan, Hassan al-Abdallat, ordered the detention of three people as part of the inquiry into the accident, news agency Petra reported.</p>

<p>The deputy Prime Minister of the country, Tawfiq Kreishan, stated during a national television broadcast that the buildings&nbsp;being old and neglected were the reasons for their collapse. Furthermore, as a result of this incident, other nearby buildings are being assessed in order to avoid a similar occurrence.&nbsp;The search is still going on.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The catastrophe area lies in Jabal al-Weibdeh, which is known for its thriving cultural scene and is home to a sizable expat population.</p>
