This woman sells soaps made of expired breast milk, claims it fixes skin issues

<p>Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have successfully genetically modified a plant closely related to tobacco to produce nutrients found in human breast milk. This breakthrough could revolutionise infant formula by providing a source of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs).</p>

<p>HMOs are essential components of breast milk known to promote healthy gut bacteria in infants and offer immune system benefits. Current infant formulas lack these HMOs or include only a limited variety, which limits their health benefits compared to breastfeeding.</p>

<p>Dr Patrick Shih, leading the research, spoke on the potential impact of the study, “Imagine being able to make all the human milk oligosaccharides in a single plant. Then you could just grind up that plant, extract all the oligosaccharides simultaneously and add that directly into infant formula. There would be a lot of challenges in implementation and commercialisation, but this is the big goal that we’re trying to move toward.”</p>

<p>"While 75pc&nbsp;of infants are supplemented with or exclusively fed infant formula in the first 6 months of life, current infant formulas are either devoid of HMOs or only contain one to two of the ~200 HMOs found in human milk, limiting the health outcomes of formula-fed infants," as per the study.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study, published in Nature Food, involved reprogramming the plant's sugar-making machinery by inserting genes responsible for producing enzymes needed to create various HMOs.</p>

<p>According to Dr Shih, this approach not only holds promise for improving infant formula but also for enhancing the nutritional profile of non-dairy plant milks for adults.</p>

The volume increases to 600–1000 ml/day. The lactose concentration starts to rise in this phase. Mother’s milk finally matures to a high volume (approx. 1–1.5 litres/day) after two&nbsp;weeks of giving birth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Breastmilk also adapts to the changing needs of a growing baby in the following month. The whey concentration in the first month of lactation is extremely high and reduces to 50:50 after six months. <p>A new research has detected presence of flame retardant in human breast milk in the US. It has been reported that all samples contained at least some level of dangerous chemicals. The dangerous compounds are part of the brominated flame retardant class. These chemicals are commonly used in plastic, televisions, appliances and electronics. The research has also revealed that bromophenols, a largely unregulated subclass of the flame retardants, were present in breast milk. This is the first time these chemicals have been found to be present in human breast milk.</p>

<p>These chemicals can prove to be potent neurotoxins especially for developing children. The findings of the study were termed "disturbing" by Erica Schreder, a toxicologist with Toxic Free Future and co-author of the study.</p>

<p>“The production and use of these compounds continues, and they are likely to impact children’s health until governments require companies to end their use and switch to safer solutions,” the study’s authors wrote as quoted by The Guardian.</p>

<p>The team of researchers included those from Emory University, Seattle Children's Research Institute and the University of Washington. The researchers checked milk samples collected from 50 mothers from across the US.</p>

<h2><strong>Brominated flame retardants</strong></h2>

<p>This is a class of at least 75 chemicals which are used to prevent combustion in electronics and consumer products. In the 1970s some of the older version of these chemicals were removed from the marketplace for being toxic. Newer iterations of these chemicals have raised health concerns.</p>

<p>The Guardian reported that many of these compounds have been linked with increased impulsivity, memory impairment, impaired motor skills, lower intelligence and decreased attention in children. Some of the chemicals are carcinogenic.</p>

<p>Schreder said that government laws and rules have helped making breast milk safer but unregulated flame retardants are still a problem.</p>

<p>To evade regulations on a particular chemical, companies slightly alter properties of that chemical. This practice is called "regrettable substitution". Schreder said that industry's actions with brominated flame retardants is a "classic" case of this practice.</p>

<p>They cause pollution by entering ecosystems from a variety of sources like cosmetics, clothing, food packaging, and industrial processes.</p>

<p>Though first discovered in 2004, microplastics have permeated everywhere—in deep oceans; Arctic snow and Antarctic ice; in shellfish, table salt, drinking water. These tiny pieces could take decades or more to degrade fully.</p>

<p>However, the discovery of these tiny particles in breast milk has started scientists.</p>

<p>According to the Guardian, microplastics were found in the breast milk samples taken from 34 healthy mothers, a week after giving birth in Rome, Italy. The scientists detected microplastics in 75 per cent of them.</p>

<p>The study, which was published in Polymers journal, discovered microplastics composed of polyethene, PVC and polypropylene.</p>

<p>Plastics contain harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, which have been found in breast milk before.</p>

<p>“So, the proof of microplastics’ presence in breast milk increases our great concern for the extremely vulnerable population of infants,” Dr Valentina Notarstefano, from Università Politecnica delle Marche, in Ancona, Italy, said.</p>

<p>A further issue is that prices for the&nbsp;formula&nbsp;that remains have skyrocketed.</p>

<p>An investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared Abbott's&nbsp;formula&nbsp;but made 483 "observations" about the factory, Abbott said in a statement Friday.</p>

<p>"We immediately began implementing corrective actions and&nbsp;subject to FDA approval, we could restart our Sturgis, Mich., site within two weeks," the company said.</p>

<p>The FDA promised to announce plans next week that would allow, among other things, the import of&nbsp;formula&nbsp;produced overseas.</p>

<p><strong>Matter of weeks</strong></p>

<p>The FDA currently bans most foreign infant&nbsp;formula, including products made in Europe, not because of health concerns but due to labeling and packaging standards.</p>

<p>"We believe these and other ongoing efforts will help dramatically improve the supply in the US in a matter of weeks," FDA head Robert Califf said Friday on Twitter.</p>

<p>"It matters a little less if... we're talking about soda or chips. But it matters a lot more when we're talking about essential things like milk," she said.</p>

<p>The current situation is the result of a decades-long movement. The concentration has benefited US companies that, in the absence of competition, have been able to agree on prices among themselves, Starbuck explained.</p>

<p>Starbuck said it's time to turn back the clock, even if it means dismantling the huge corporations.</p>

<p>"What we need to do now is pass comprehensive antitrust legislation in order to better scrutinize companies, to break up companies that have gotten so big that they're abusing their market power," she said.</p>

<p>Alma Partida knew her breastfeeding journey was coming to a close in June. She had nursed her daughter, Alessa, for nearly 18 months — longer than most mothers in the United States do — and the process had not been easy.</p>

<p>First there was Alessa’s birth, by emergency cesarean section, in February 2020. In the hospital after surgery, Partida struggled to breastfeed. Once she and her daughter were discharged, nursing was still challenging.</p>

<p>“It was a really long journey,” said Partida, a 29-year-old speech language pathologist in Watsonville, California.</p>

<p>Now that it was ending, she wanted to find a way to mark it.</p>

<p>While scrolling through posts on a parenting Facebook group, Partida came across an unusual but fitting keepsake: a pendant containing a white stone. The main ingredient? Breast milk.</p>

<p>She knew she had to have one.</p>

<p>This may be the first time you’re hearing of breast milk jewellery, a niche of the commemorative market. But there’s plenty of precedent for trinkets and wearable items containing organic matter. Earrings and brooches fashioned from human hair were popular during the Victorian era. More recently, synthetic diamonds have been manufactured from cremation ashes. It’s common, too, for parents to save umbilical cords and baby teeth.</p>

<p>For her own piece, Partida shipped about 10 milliliters of breast milk to a company called Keepsakes by Grace. About a month later, she received a milky-white heart-shaped pendant in the mail.</p>

<p>“It’s the last drop,” Partida said. “It’s the last thing you have to remember the journey.”</p>

<p>Freda Rosenfeld, a lactation consultant in New York City, said she understands the impulse to memorialise the experience.</p>

<p>“For many people, breastfeeding is an extremely special and important time in their lives,” Rosenfeld said. “Often when they wean, it’s a little sad, because it was such a special moment.”</p>

<p>Sarah Castillo, owner of Keepsakes by Grace, said her clients often purchase pieces from her after they have experienced difficulty nursing.</p>

<p>Castillo started her line in March after seeing similar products on Instagram. She experimented with her own breast milk for months, eventually landing on a method that involves dehydrating the solution to make a powder, then mixing the powder with resin to make a stone. Her pieces typically cost $60 to $150.</p>

<p>“Jewellery is already really sentimental,” Castillo said, but in the case of jewelry made from breast milk, “it is literally holding a memory.”</p>

<p>Ann Marie Sharoupim, founder of Mamma’s Liquid Love, said her clients have similar motivations when they buy her breast milk jewellery. Sharoupim, 34, who has a pharmacy doctorate and lives in Rutherford, New Jersey, sells earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings featuring breast milk stones. They are $90 to $1,500. This year, she said, she sold nearly 4,000 pieces.</p>

<p>For some parents, jewellery made from breast milk can also be a way to cope with loss.</p>

<p>Rebecca Zuick, 31, a software development student in San Antonio, purchased a ring with a stone made from her breast milk in February 2017, both as a way to celebrate the end of breastfeeding her son, Asher, and to cope with the stillbirth she experienced in July 2015.</p>

<p>“For me, looking into getting jewellery made out of breast milk, it was a way to kind of hang on to the memory and the legacy of the child that I wasn’t able to nurse, because that was milk that they would have been able to have if they had survived,” Zuick said.</p>

<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization both recommend that infants be breastfed for the first six months of their lives. However, for many mothers, that is untenable because of work; the United States is one of the few countries with no national paid maternity leave.</p>

<p>Jacqueline Wolf, a professor of the history of medicine at Ohio University and the author of a 2001 book on the decline of breastfeeding in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, noted that, for the most part, the mothers who are able to breastfeed during those early months are those with paid maternity leave or flexible work schedules.</p>

<p>“Most women don’t have jobs like that,” Wolf said. “I think that this jewellery is also a little bit symbolic of this injustice.”</p>

‘People want jewellery with meaning’: How breast milk became a gem

<p>According to a study, sugars in breast milk can help prevent Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections in human cells and tissues and in mice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study has argued that human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) –– short strings of sugar molecules abundant in breast milk–– might be able to replace antibiotics for treating infections in infants and adults.</p>

<p>GBS infections are a common cause of blood infections, meningitis, and stillbirth in infants.&nbsp;Antibiotics may treat and prevent GBS infections, but the bacterium is becoming increasingly resistant.</p>

<p>The researchers studied the effects of combined HMOs from several mothers on GBS infection of placental immune cells (called macrophages) and of the gestational membrane (the sac surrounding the foetus).</p>

<p>"We found that HMOs were able to completely inhibit bacterial growth in both the macrophages and the membranes so we very quickly turned to looking at a mouse model," said, Rebecca Moore, who is presenting the work at the meeting.</p>

<p>They examined whether HMOs could prevent a GBS infection from spreading through the reproductive tract of pregnant mice. "In five different parts of the reproductive tract, we saw significantly decreased GBS infection with HMO treatment," Moore added.</p>

<p>Moore is a graduate student in the labs of Steven Townsend, PhD, at Vanderbilt University and Jennifer Gaddy, PhD, at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre.</p>

<p>“We wanted to jump from these in vitro studies to see whether HMOs could prevent infections in cells and tissues from a pregnant woman, and in pregnant mice.”</p>

<p>According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 2,000 babies in the US get GBS each year, and 4-6 per cent of them die from it. The bacteria are often transferred from mother to baby during labour and delivery.</p>

<p>An expectant mother, who tests positive for GBS is usually given intravenous antibiotics during labour to help prevent early-onset infections which occur during the first week of life. Interestingly, the incidence of late-onset infections (which happen from one week to three months after birth) is higher in formula-fed than breastfed infants, which suggests that factors in breast milk could help protect against GBS.</p>

<p>If so, the sugars could perhaps replace antibiotics, which in addition to killing beneficial bacteria, are becoming less effective because of the rise in antibiotic resistance, the researchers said.</p>

<p>The findings will be presented at the upcoming fall meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS).</p>

The researchers studied the effects of combined HMOs from several mothers on GBS infection of placental immune cells (called macrophages) and of the gestational membrane (the sac surrounding the foetus). "We found that HMOs were able to completely inhibit bacterial growth in both the macrophages and the membranes so we very quickly turned to looking at a mouse model," said, Rebecca Moore, who is presenting the work at the meeting. They examined whether HMOs could prevent a GBS infection from spreading through the reproductive tract of pregnant mice. "In five different parts of the reproductive tract, we saw significantly decreased GBS infection with HMO treatment," Moore added. Moore is a graduate student in the labs of Steven Townsend, PhD, at Vanderbilt University and Jennifer Gaddy, PhD, at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre. The bacteria are often transferred from mother to baby during labour and delivery. An expectant mother, who tests positive for GBS is usually given intravenous antibiotics during labour to help prevent early-onset infections which occur during the first week of life. Interestingly, the incidence of late-onset infections (which happen from one week to three months after birth) is higher in formula-fed than breastfed infants, which suggests that factors in breast milk could help protect against GBS. If so, the sugars could perhaps replace antibiotics, which in addition to killing beneficial bacteria, are becoming less effective because of the rise in antibiotic resistance, the researchers said. <p>"It would go against Islam," he said, suggesting that the authorities should have discussed this "very sensitive issue" beforehand with clerics.</p>

<p>Prominent Islamic cleric Fariduddin Masoud struck a conciliatory note, however, saying authorities should find out if and how Muslim majority nations such as Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Malaysia have set up human milk banks.</p>

<p>The milk bank in Dhaka was slated to start this month, but project co-ordinator Mojibur Rahman said it had been delayed indefinitely because of the "widespread criticism".</p>

<p>"We collect and preserve milk separately and rigorously record (donor) identities," he told AFP on Monday, a day after the milk bank's suspension was announced.</p>

<p>Top child specialists had backed the milk bank, saying it was needed to help save child lives as well as aid their growth.</p>

<p>"Human milk banks are essential for orphans and critically ill children, especially to save the lives of the babies who are being treated at the hospital's intensive care unit and whose mothers are not available," said Mahbubul Haque, a top doctor at Dhaka's main children's hospital.</p>

<p>"Milk banks are established in major hospitals in the West. We should set up more such banks in all our top hospitals for children," he told AFP.</p>
