Could the universe contain a hidden fifth spatial dimension? A new theoretical study explores whether primordial black holes, hypothetical objects formed in the early universe, might reveal clues. Researchers calculated how these black holes could behave if gravity extends into an extra, unseen dimension. Watch the video to know what this fascinating new study is.

Fifth dimension found? Could black holes from the big bang reveal a hidden dimension?

Planets form around stars and some also roam around in the universe untethered. We have known that they are shaped from the planetary disk where planet of material is available for their formation. A study has now claimed that they could even be birthed in the most unlikely location - around black holes.&nbsp;Black holes have such strong gravitational force that not even light can escape it. They pull all matter around them into them. But surprisingly, they are not just killers, but are also creators, according to new research published in The Astrophysical Journal on June 29, 2026.&nbsp;The study claims that the dusty regions around supermassive black holes can become the catalyst for planet formation, similar to how they form around stars. The focus of the study were supermassive black holes that are actively feeding on the gas and dust around them. Known as active galactic nuclei, or AGNs, they can be found at the centre of almost every galaxy.&nbsp; When they pull in matter, a huge amount of gas and dust start starts collecting around it. This matter swirls around the black hole creating a super hot accretion disk, just like the planetary disks around stars from which planets are born. Astrophysicist Barry McKernan, co-author of the study, said they found that at least theoretically, it is possible that the same processes could form planets around black holes, since the same rules of physics should apply.&nbsp; If true, this means that black holes could also have planets around them. And not just a few, but one black hole could have millions of planets in its vicinity. Simulations showed that these planets would be as large as Jupiter right after their birth, and grow up to become even more humongous. This is because black holes could be several million times bigger than the Sun.&nbsp; The process of planet formation will also be the same. Dust grains would accumulate in increasingly dense concentrations, and collide with each other. The solid particles would gradually coalesce together, thus creating baby planets. Some of them might outgrow the planet stage and end up becoming brown dwarfs, or failed stars. However, it is also possible that some of them become actual stars.&nbsp; But since black holes are power gravitationally, they could tug onto some of these planets, thus killing them and creating more dust. Despite this, there could be millions or billions of planets. A single episode of an active galactic nucleus burst is typically about 2 million years long , with one black hole witnessing several such episodes. Thus, over billions of years, many planets could be born.

Black holes can birth planets and even stars, a study has found. Scientists say the massive amount of matter around them could follow the same rules of planet formation as those that happen around a star. This could lead to planets forming around them.

Not just killers, but creators: Black holes could birth planets and even stars, study finds

An extremely powerful signal slammed into Earth in 2023, leaving astronomers puzzled about its source. It was detected by the KM3NeT/ARCA underwater neutrino telescope located in the Mediterranean Sea and was unlike anything seen before. It was one of the most energetic neutrinos ever recorded and slammed with a force tens of thousands of times more powerful than the particles ever created by humans.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since then, several explanations have been put forward for the 2023 KM3NeT signal. Some said it could have come from blazars or exploding primordial black holes.&nbsp; The latest origin theory also involves a black hole, an ancient one made of cosmic strings and hiding inside a fifth dimension. A recent paper published in Physical Review D studied the possibility of primordial black holes emerging from a string-based framework. The authors explain that the rules of quantum gravity "inevitably" lead to five-dimensional primordial black holes.&nbsp; The researchers explain that the particle detected was a neutrino and had no photons with it, because of which none of the detectors caught it. Neutrinos are also known as "ghost particles" because they do not interact with other matter. Dieter Lüst, a physicist at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Germany, and his team said that it slammed with an energy of roughly 30,000 times higher than anything that CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. But finding its source has been extremely difficult.&nbsp;Scientists say the "dark" dimension is a hypothetical fifth dimension in string theory, and only gravity rules over it, Gizmodo reported. Here, the idea is that when cosmic strings collapse in this hypothetical dimension, primordial black holes were born, as opposed to the usual explanation that they were born with the cosmos.&nbsp; When they deviated from the regular explanation, the dark dimension emerged as a natural explanation for the "absence of an associated high-energy photon” in the 2023 neutrino signal. The strings, or thin cracks in spacetime, would have collected into “loops” that collapse into relatively small black holes. The team calculated that the rate of evaporation for such objects would be "comparable" to the age of the universe, Gizmodo reported. This would have caused these ancient black holes to leak neutrinos.

The 2023 KM3NeT neutrino signal remains unexplained because of the extreme force with which it slammed into Earth. Now a new study has come up with the strangest theory ever, pinning it on a black hole which does not actually exist.

In one of the most shocking discoveries in the universe, scientists have found a galaxy with not one, not two, but three supermassive black holes. Universe delivers a banger as scientists find galaxy with 3 supermassive black holes

Astronomers have discovered the fastest known star in the Milky Way, racing around the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at an astonishing 25,000 kilometers per second. The star, named S301, is also the closest known star to our galaxy’s central black hole, completing an orbit in just 8.7 years.

Scientists say S301’s extreme proximity to Sagittarius A* could help them directly measure the spin of a supermassive black hole for the first time. The discovery offers a rare opportunity to test Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity in one of the most extreme environments in the universe.

Fastest star ever found in Milky Way could unlock black hole secrets

Astronomers have observed an extraordinarily luminous black hole estimated to shine around 100 billion times brighter than the Sun. The object’s immense brightness is linked to material falling into the black hole, offering scientists a remarkable opportunity to study some of the most extreme environments in the universe.

Universe's new black hole mystery: Black hole 100 billion times brighter than sun

Astronomers may have discovered a completely new type of cosmic object that could help explain one of the biggest mysteries in the early universe. The strange object appears to resemble a star while potentially hiding a rapidly growing black hole inside. If confirmed, the discovery could challenge existing ideas about how the universe’s earliest giant black holes formed.

Two black holes are moving towards each other 500 million light-years from our solar system and will merge in about 100 years. When this happens, Earth will also feel the effects of the cosmic event. Study co-author Silke Britzen told BBC Science Focus, "We expect one (merged) black hole to remain.” The blazar at the core of the galaxy Markarian 501 caught the attention of scientists. This extremely luminous and ultrabright object is usually powered by a black hole. When they got a closer look, the researchers found that there was not one but two jet streams. This showed that the activity was happening because of two black holes that will collide in the next 100 years.&nbsp; The blazar shoots jets of energy radiation into space as they consume objects at the centres of galaxies, which also reaches Earth. A central black hole acts as the source for them. But the blazar in the galaxy Markarian 501 appeared different from usual. Radio telescope data gathered over the years failed to reveal whether a supermassive black hole was at its core. The study was published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.&nbsp;<h2>Two jets at the centre of the galaxy</h2>To get a better look, they analysed over 83 datasets from the Very Long Baseline Array, which comprises 10 radio telescopes located in different parts of the world. The observations revealed that there was another jet looping counterclockwise around the blazar's centre. This led them to believe that each jet was originating from a different black hole, which are likely the mass of 100 million to one billion suns. A research paper by Daniel Jampolski and Professor Luciano Rezzolla from Goethe University Frankfurt suggests that it is highly possible that not every black hole we encounter is what it seems, and instead could be a gravastar. Their mathematical model, a first in this regard, shows how a collapsing star could stop right before becoming a black hole and trigger a Big Bang to birth a miniature universe inside itself. This theory also lends credence to the belief that our own universe could be sitting inside a body similar to a black hole. Their findings also solve some of the problems associated with black holes, like how something that was the size of billions of Suns can squeeze into an infinitely small point. Besides, there is the added mystery of what lies beyond the event horizon since everything that falls inside cannot be observed.<h2>Gravastar - A point right before the black hole</h2>The authors propose an ultra compact object known as a gravastar - a radically new mathematical solution to Einstein's equations of General Relativity. The paper states that in some cases, when a dead star collapses, it does not convert into a black hole. There is no singularity or an event horizon, and at the very end of its last stages, the matter is compressed to such extremes that it triggers the birth of a miniature universe inside the dying star. This newly formed universe would be almost the same as the Big Bang that gave rise to our own universe, the authors wrote in the paper. Dark energy would drive its expansion, just like our cosmos. As this mini universe pushes outwards against the inward pull of gravity, the opposing forces would stop it from becoming a black hole. New theory suggests billions of 'mini universes' could be scattered in our own cosmos

Astronomers have discovered that the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way is emitting powerful outflows, described as a “cosmic breeze,” that could be reshaping its surrounding environment. The findings shed new light on how black holes influence star formation and galactic evolution, offering deeper insight into the dynamics of our own galaxy.

Milky Way's Supermassive Black Hole Found Blowing Cosmic Breeze

For decades, astronomers have worked on the assumption that galaxies came first. In the conventional picture, stars form within galaxies, exhaust their fuel and collapse into black holes, which gradually grow by consuming surrounding matter and merging with other black holes. Yet a new discovery by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is challenging that sequence, offering evidence that some supermassive black holes may have formed before the galaxies around them.&nbsp; The findings, published in Nature and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, centre on a distant object known as Abell2744-QSO1, or QSO1, a ‘Little Red Dot’ that existed just 700 million years after the Big Bang. Researchers say the object could represent one of the clearest examples yet of a supermassive black hole forming without first emerging from a stellar collapse process.<h2>A Tiny Object With an Enormous Black Hole</h2>QSO1 is only about 1,300 light-years across, but its light has travelled for more than 13 billion years to reach Earth. The object is magnified by the gravitational lensing effect of the galaxy cluster Abell 2744, also known as Pandora’s Cluster, making it easier to study than many similar early-universe objects.&nbsp;ALSO READ: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/blue-origin-s-new-glenn-programme-hit-by-months-of-delays-after-launch-pad-explosion-1780145007586">Blue Origin's New Glenn programme hit by months of delays after launch pad explosion</a>&nbsp;Initial observations suggested that QSO1 consisted largely of hydrogen and helium gas orbiting a black hole estimated to be tens of millions of times the mass of the Sun. However, researchers needed a direct way to confirm that estimate.“Before now, all of the mass measurements of black holes in the early universe have been indirect, based on assumptions from what we know about them in the local universe,” said Francesco D’Eugenio of the University of Cambridge. “We didn’t know if those assumptions really apply to the distant universe.”<h2>Webb Maps the Motion of Gas</h2>Using the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) aboard Webb, scientists mapped the motion of hydrogen gas around the black hole. The gas displayed Keplerian motion, orbiting the central object in the same way planets orbit the Sun.“This is important because it tells us that most of the mass of QSO1 is concentrated in the black hole at the centre,” said researcher Ignas Juodžbalis. “If the mass were more distributed, as it would be if there were a lot of stars, the gas would not have this perfect Keplerian rotation.”&nbsp;ALSO READ: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/what-is-hiding-inside-the-antennae-galaxies-scientists-uncover-evidence-of-a-possible-supermassive-black-hole-1780132935399">What is hiding inside Antennae galaxies? Scientists uncover evidence of a possible supermassive black hole</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;The observations enabled the first direct measurement of a black hole mass within the universe’s first billion years. Researchers calculated the object’s mass at roughly 50 million times that of the Sun.<h2>A Challenge to Existing Theories</h2>Perhaps the most striking result is that the black hole accounts for at least two-thirds of QSO1’s total mass, far higher than in nearby galaxies, where black holes typically represent only a tiny fraction of the host galaxy’s mass. The surrounding gas was also found to be almost entirely hydrogen and helium, with a metallicity below 0.5 per cent of the Sun, making QSO1 one of the most chemically pristine galactic environments ever observed.&nbsp;“It seems that we have found a black hole that does not have a substantial host galaxy and that has predated stellar processes,” said Juodžbalis. “This is very exciting because it is evidence for primordial black holes or direct collapse black holes, which have been theorised but not confirmed.” Calling the discovery “a paradigm shift”, co-author Roberto Maiolino said: “It’s a total revisiting of the classical scenarios of how black holes form and grow.”

Researchers say the object could represent one of the clearest examples yet of a supermassive black hole forming without first emerging from a stellar collapse process.

The findings, published in Nature and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, centre on a distant object known as Abell2744-QSO1, or QSO1, a ‘Little Red Dot’ that existed just 700 million years after the Big Bang. Researchers say the object could represent one of the clearest examples yet of a supermassive black hole forming without first emerging from a stellar collapse process. A Tiny Object With an Enormous Black Hole QSO1 is only about 1,300 light-years across, but its light has travelled for more than 13 billion years to reach Earth. The object is magnified by the gravitational lensing effect of the galaxy cluster Abell 2744, also known as Pandora’s Cluster, making it easier to study than many similar early-universe objects. ALSO READ: Blue Origin's New Glenn programme hit by months of delays after launch pad explosion Initial observations suggested that QSO1 consisted largely of hydrogen and helium gas orbiting a black hole estimated to be tens of millions of times the mass of the Sun. However, researchers needed a direct way to confirm that estimate. “Before now, all of the mass measurements of black holes in the early universe have been indirect, based on assumptions from what we know about them in the local universe,” said Francesco D’Eugenio of the University of Cambridge. “We didn’t know if those assumptions really apply to the distant universe.” Webb Maps the Motion of Gas Using the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) aboard Webb, scientists mapped the motion of hydrogen gas around the black hole. The gas displayed Keplerian motion, orbiting the central object in the same way planets orbit the Sun. “This is important because it tells us that most of the mass of QSO1 is concentrated in the black hole at the centre,” said researcher Ignas Juodžbalis. “If the mass were more distributed, as it would be if there were a lot of stars, the gas would not have this perfect Keplerian rotation.” ALSO READ: What is hiding inside Antennae galaxies? Scientists uncover evidence of a possible supermassive black hole The observations enabled the first direct measurement of a black hole mass within the universe’s first billion years. Researchers calculated the object’s mass at roughly 50 million times that of the Sun. A Challenge to Existing Theories Perhaps the most striking result is that the black hole accounts for at least two-thirds of QSO1’s total mass, far higher than in nearby galaxies, where black holes typically represent only a tiny fraction of the host galaxy’s mass. The surrounding gas was also found to be almost entirely hydrogen and helium, with a metallicity below 0.5 per cent of the Sun, making QSO1 one of the most chemically pristine galactic environments ever observed. “It seems that we have found a black hole that does not have a substantial host galaxy and that has predated stellar processes,” said Juodžbalis.

Which came first—the black hole or the galaxy? Webb discovery questions a key theory of galaxy formation

Scientists have hypothesised that wormholes could be lurking in the Milky Way, thanks to dark matter. According to a new study, this invisible force that is yet to be seen has the perfect properties that could not only open a wormhole, but keep it stable and its neck open to make it traversable. Co–author Dr Saibal Ray, an astrophysicist from GLA University in India, said, "Dark matter is hypothesised to lead to wormhole formation because its unique density and gravitational collapse in extreme environments can alter spacetime topology." Several theories suggest that dark matter pulls things together with gravity, and this makes it an unlikely source of stable wormholes.&nbsp;&nbsp; However, physicists largely believe that wormholes can't exist for more than a short instant, as the extreme gravitational force would lead to their walls collapsing. In the latest study, this is where dark matter comes into the picture.<h2>Dark matter and wormholes</h2>&nbsp;The unique properties of dark matter would keep the wormholes stable and force the throat to remain open. "While standard dark matter holds galaxies together, specific models suggest its 'condensate properties' can trigger the structural, traversable 'throat' of a wormhole during collapse," Dr Ray says. Our galaxy is believed to have a "dark matter halo" stretching out up to one million light–years from the galactic core.&nbsp;&nbsp;Scientists say this abundant amount of dark matter makes it very likely that spiral galaxies, such as the Milky Way, could be harbouring wormholes. Milky Way's wormhole: Massive tunnel to another part of universe could be hidden in our own galaxy

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has discovered a black hole that was booted out of its galaxy and is now zooming through space at a staggering speed of 1,000 kilometres per second. The runaway supermassive black hole is at least 10 million times the mass of the Sun. It is now the first confirmed runaway supermassive black hole, leaving scientists wondering about the strength of the gravitational kick that caused it to move at such an unimaginable speed through the cosmos. "The forces that are needed to dislodge such a massive black hole from its home are enormous. And yet, it was predicted that such escapes should occur!" team leader Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University told Space.com.&nbsp;RBH-1, first reported in 2023, comes from a pair of galaxies named the "Cosmic Owl". It is moving at 3,000 times the speed of sound at sea level here on Earth. It has a massive bow shock, the size of an entire galaxy, in front of it, with a star formation extending for 200,000 light-years tailing behind it. What led the black hole to leave its galaxy? The researchers wrote in a preprint uploaded to arXiv that it possibly happened because of gravitational recoil from a supermassive black hole merger.<h2>How did the researchers see the black hole?</h2>The researchers wrote that "the wake is powered by a supersonic runaway supermassive black hole, a long-predicted consequence of gravitational-wave recoil or multi-body ejection from galactic nuclei." Like any other black hole, it also has an event horizon that traps light, making it difficult to see. RBH-"drives a shock wave in the gas that is moving through, and it is this shock wave, and the wake of the shock wave behind the black hole, that we see," van Dokkum said.&nbsp; As it steers through space, the supermassive black hole pushes the gas sideways "away from the supermassive black hole at a velocity of hundreds of km per second. This dynamical signature was observed with JWST. The black hole likely went rogue as two galaxies merged, and each of their black holes also came together. This gives a "powerful kick to the newly formed black hole" leading it to move at "a speed of 1,000 km/s, enough to eject the black hole."&nbsp; The three-body interaction is also possible, as one galaxy could have had a pair of binary black holes at its centre. In this scenario, when the third black hole enters the scene, one of them is kicked out. van Dokkum thinks the first reason is more likely in the case of this runaway supermassive black hole.

Black Hole Unleashes Flare 10 Trillion Times Brighter Than the Sun!

A gravitational wave event detected in 2019 might have led astronomers to discover the first wormhole in the universe. LIGO and Virgo picked up the wave that lasted less than a tenth of a second. Scientists analysed the event and deduced that it was the result of a collision between two black holes. However, six years later, they think they might have been partly wrong. While the scientists still think that a merger between two black holes triggered the waves, it probably didn't happen in our universe. Instead, what we witnessed was the reverberation from an alternate universe that reached us through a wormhole. The signal named GW190521 is still the "preferred interpretation", as per researchers of a new study, but they are not denying the wormhole theory either. The revelation was made by physicist Qi Lai of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in a preprint uploaded to arXiv.

A scientist wants to send a probe to a black hole, although he knows that his idea cannot be put into force right now since it is based on a technology that doesn't exist. He has come up with a plan to send a spacecraft right into the heart of a black hole to study these mysterious giants hogging our universe. It involves building the tiniest spaceship, no bigger than a paper clip, with lasers pushing it through space almost at the speed of light. Humans have not been able to build anything that can move at such speeds. Although Professor Cosimo Bambi, of Fudan University in Shanghai, is hopeful that this can be done in the future. He told Daily Mail that it is fully possible to develop this technology, all it needs is "time, money, and motivation." His ambitious project would come at a huge cost, as the lasers alone would require more than $1 trillion. He has published his proposal in the journal iScience, in which he argues that sending a spacecraft directly into the heart of a black hole could reveal secrets about the fabric of spacetime. Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/baba-vanga-predicted-alien-contact-in-2025-interstellar-spaceship-comet-solar-system-1754538939635">Baba Vanga Predicted Alien Contact In 2025. Black hole probe needs 100 years, $1 trillion and fictional technology. But there is an even bigger problem

Scientists have found the earliest black hole in the universe that existed just 500 million years after the Big Bang. The discovery was revealed in a new paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The ancient black hole was spotted by the James Webb Space Telescope in the distant galaxy CAPERS-LRD-z9, shrouded by gas. It is around 13.3 billion years old, when the universe was just three per cent of its current age. CAPERS-LRD-z9 is one of the “little red dot” galaxies that Webb captured in the first year of its launch. They looked very different from the galaxies Hubble was used to seeing. Steven Finkelstein, co-author of the new study and director of the Cosmic Frontier Center at the University of Texas at Austin, said in a statement, “The discovery of Little Red Dots was a major surprise from early JWST data, as they looked nothing like galaxies seen with the Hubble Space Telescope.”Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/two-years-apart-supermassive-black-hole-seen-eating-the-same-unlucky-star-twice-1754133922155">Two years apart, supermassive black hole seen eating the same unlucky star twice</a><h2>Galaxies born right after Big Bang</h2>These galaxies appeared as scarlet pinpricks in Webb's vision and had never been detected by any telescope before it. Their discovery changed the beliefs scientists had about the universe. NASA stated that if these shining objects were galaxies, then it would imply that some of them had grown really big, really fast and did not fit into the current theories. Finkelstein and his team compiled data on these little red dot galaxies and published their findings in January. It included all of them that existed in the first 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. They wrote that these galaxies likely had supermassive black holes that were still growing. He then collaborated with a team led by Anthony Taylor, a postdoctoral researcher at the Cosmic Frontier Center. Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/baba-vanga-predicted-alien-contact-in-2025-interstellar-spaceship-comet-solar-system-1754538939635">Baba Vanga Predicted Alien Contact In 2025. They noticed a distinct spectroscopic signature that is produced when black holes interact with gas clouds. As the gas rapidly swirls around and falls into a black hole, light from gas that is moving away from us stretches into redder wavelengths, while the one moving towards us has bluer wavelengths. Taylor says, “There aren’t many other things that create this signature." This one turned out to be the earliest such example. Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/would-you-dare-to-take-a-400-year-one-way-trip-to-alpha-centauri-on-this-ship-1754642146307">Would you dare to take a 400‑year one‑way trip to Alpha Centauri on this ship?</a>Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/universe-biggest-black-hole-is-so-monstrous-that-it-can-fit-36-billion-suns-1754645711409">Universe's biggest black hole is so monstrous that it can fit 36 billion Suns</a><h2>Black holes and brightness from galaxies</h2>Their findings further cement the belief that supermassive black holes are the likely source of the brightness emitted by these galaxies. “We’ve seen these clouds in other galaxies,” Taylor said. “When we compared this object to those other sources, it was a dead ringer.” The oldest black hole discovered at the centre of this galaxy is up to 300 million times more massive than the Sun. "Finding a black hole of this size that existed so early on in the universe adds to growing evidence that early black holes grew much faster than we thought possible,” Finkelstein said.

Steven Finkelstein, co-author of the new study and director of the Cosmic Frontier Center at the University of Texas at Austin, said in a statement, “The discovery of Little Red Dots was a major surprise from early JWST data, as they looked nothing like galaxies seen with the Hubble Space Telescope.” Also Read: Two years apart, supermassive black hole seen eating the same unlucky star twice Galaxies born right after Big Bang These galaxies appeared as scarlet pinpricks in Webb's vision and had never been detected by any telescope before it. Also Read: Baba Vanga Predicted Alien Contact In 2025. Is Interstellar 'Mothership' Hurtling Towards Earth Them Reaching Out? They checked the spectroscopy data from Webb’s CAPERS (CANDELS-Area Prism Epoch of Reionization Survey) program. Also Read: Universe's biggest black hole is so monstrous that it can fit 36 billion Suns Black holes and brightness from galaxies Their findings further cement the belief that supermassive black holes are the likely source of the brightness emitted by these galaxies.

The oldest black hole in the universe has been discovered in a distant galaxy, CAPERS-LRD-z9, shrouded by gas. It existed only 500 million years after the Big Bang occurred and is &nbsp;300 million times more massive than the Sun.

'A dead ringer': James Webb discovers universe's oldest black hole

The biggest black hole in the universe might have just been found. It sits inside a galaxy whose light is distorted to such an extent by another galaxy in front of it that it appears like a horseshoe. This is because the galaxy in the foreground is hundreds of times heavier than our own galaxy. Because of this bending of spacetime, the background galaxy is known as the Cosmic Horseshoe. The supermassive black hole at the centre of this galaxy has been confirmed to be the biggest one ever seen in the universe in a study. There are millions of galaxies with humongous black holes at their core. They are all estimated to be billions of times the mass of our Sun, although there has never been an exact number to put next to them. But now, with this latest study, scientists have the closest estimate yet. The monstrous black hole in Cosmic Horseshoe is 36.3 billion times the mass of the Sun, with a margin of error of about 6 billion solar masses. "This is amongst the top 10 most massive black holes ever discovered, and quite possibly the most massive,” co-author Professor Thomas Collett, from the University of Portsmouth, said in a statement. Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/would-you-dare-to-take-a-400-year-one-way-trip-to-alpha-centauri-on-this-ship-1754642146307">Would you dare to take a 400‑year one‑way trip to Alpha Centauri on this ship?</a>&nbsp;<h2>Proof of biggest black hole in the universe</h2>Scientists have been measuring black holes for years, but every other supermassive black hole till now has had quite large uncertainties when measured indirectly. A wandering supermassive black hole is inflicting terror on passing stars, creating a horror scene in space. Located 600 million light-years away, this monster cosmic body is invisible and quietly devouring stars. Hubble Space Telescope spotted it, marking the first optical discovery of a supermassive black hole that is roaming around in space. Dubbed "Space Jaws" by astronomers, the black hole isn't strangely sitting at the centre of a galaxy, like they usually do. It is so humongous that it can fit one million suns. But it is a cosmic anomaly, and scientists are trying to learn more about it.A newly identified tidal disruption event (TDE) exposed the killer black hole sitting between stars. The event showed that a black hole had torn apart and devoured a star, releasing a powerful burst of radiation. TDEs help scientists understand how black holes operate, offering an insight into what triggers energetic jets and winds when a star is shredded. This TDE is named AT2024tvd and appeared like a bright flash picked up by Hubble. Notably, black holes have immense gravitational tidal forces. Are we living inside a black hole? NASA's James Webb Telescope study leaves scientists alarmed

Can black holes simply be wormholes? Scientists have long believed that the two cosmic objects might be the same, although the latter has never been observed in the universe. However, mathematical calculations show that wormholes might be lurking out there. In fact, black holes might be wormholes. Sci-fi movies have often explored the idea of wormholes, an object that is said to bend space time to allow crossing into another point in the universe faster than it would otherwise take.We have heard about the Einstein-Rosen bridge, a theoretical wormhole proposed in 1935. The two scientists, Einstein and Rosen, used it to address the singularity problem within black holes. It was a bridge between spacetime sheets. '25 times more powerful than supernovae': Astronomers identify the brightest blast since Big Bang

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured what NASA has described as "Space Jaws." A black hole gobbled up a star 600 million light years ago, and the space agency has got it on camera. The meal triggered a bright explosion, as the black hole released a burst of radiation. <h2>Supermassive black hole with mass of 100 million suns lies next to it</h2>
The surprises kept coming as the space observatory detected another supermassive black hole that followed the rules and roared at the centre of the galaxy. This monster is 100 million times the mass of the Sun. However, the two cosmic giants are eerily close to each other.

The bigger black hole has an active galactic nucleus. It is strange to see two supermassive black holes exist in the same galaxy, especially since they are two separate entities and not bound gravitationally. Astronomers think the smaller hole will eventually merge with the bigger black hole, but that doesn't seem like a possibility for a long time.&nbsp;

When a star falls into a black hole, it is stretched or "spaghettified" because of the gravitational tidal forces. As the remains of a star fall inside the black hole, energy with extremely high temperatures is released. This is how astronomers knew that what they were watching was not a supernova but a black hole eating a star.
NASA said that Hubble picked up that the flare was very hot and showed broad emission lines of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, and silicon.&nbsp;

This black hole generally sleeps for tens of thousands of years, and only comes to life when it swallows a star, before falling silent again.
<h2>Why is the black hole not at the centre of the galaxy?</h2>
Scientists think this might be because of the three-body problem, where the object with the lowest mass is thrown away. &ldquo; If the black hole went through a triple interaction with two other black holes in the galaxy&rsquo;s core, it can still remain bound to the galaxy, orbiting around the central region,&ldquo; said Yao.
Another possibility is that the smaller black hole belongs to another galaxy that merged with this galaxy more than 1 billion years ago. If this is true, then it will ultimately travel to the centre and merge with the bigger black hole.

The resulting burst of radiation is the bright dot just off-center captured in this @NASAHubble image. https://t.co/g7mSVRZHd1 pic.twitter.com/7FnDsSmCb2 — NASA (@NASA) May 8, 2025 He thinks the latest discovery will push scientists to look for more such wayward black holes. Supermassive black hole with mass of 100 million suns lies next to it The surprises kept coming as the space observatory detected another supermassive black hole that followed the rules and roared at the centre of the galaxy. This monster is 100 million times the mass of the Sun. However, the two cosmic giants are eerily close to each other. This is just one-tenth the distance between our Sun and the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. The bigger black hole has an active galactic nucleus. It is strange to see two supermassive black holes exist in the same galaxy, especially since they are two separate entities and not bound gravitationally. Astronomers think the smaller hole will eventually merge with the bigger black hole, but that doesn't seem like a possibility for a long time. As the remains of a star fall inside the black hole, energy with extremely high temperatures is released. This is how astronomers knew that what they were watching was not a supernova but a black hole eating a star. NASA said that Hubble picked up that the flare was very hot and showed broad emission lines of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, and silicon. Why is the black hole not at the centre of the galaxy? Scientists think this might be because of the three-body problem, where the object with the lowest mass is thrown away. “If the black hole went through a triple interaction with two other black holes in the galaxy’s core, it can still remain bound to the galaxy, orbiting around the central region,“ said Yao. Another possibility is that the smaller black hole belongs to another galaxy that merged with this galaxy more than 1 billion years ago. If this is true, then it will ultimately travel to the centre and merge with the bigger black hole.

This black hole can hold 1 million suns, but an even bigger monster near it poses a mystery
