<p>The death of the delivery man sparked debate over the rights and welfare of delivery drivers across the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident, which took place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province in eastern China, started a public debate after it was reported in a widely circulated online video on September 6.</p>

<p>Media reports citing witnesses said that&nbsp;the food delivery man remained at his post from around 9:00 pm (local time) on September 5 till he was discovered by another delivery driver at 1:00 am (local time).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to Zonglan News, an insider said that the driver's relentless work ethic had earned him the nickname “Order King”.</p>

<p>He said that the delivery man was able to earn between 500 and 600 yuan (US$70 and US$85) every day and his earnings went to 700 yuan ($98.66) on rainy days.</p>

<p>“He would sometimes work until 3 am, then rise at 6 am to start again. When he felt fatigued, he would take a brief nap on his bike, ready to return to work as soon as an order came in,” Yang said.</p>

<p>Another colleague of the food delivery driver said that the latter had got involved in a traffic accident while delivering an order recently and suffered a leg fracture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The delivery man was not only earning for himself but was also supporting his 16-year-old son. His elder son was married and had children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Responding to the incident, the Xianlin Sub-district Office in Yuhang district in an official statement said that the delivery man had “collapsed and died despite emergency treatment”.</p>

<p>The recall of 2.2 million bikes&nbsp;comes as the Peloton has received several reports of injuries including “a fractured wrist and lacerations” after the bike’s seat broke during use. The bike in question is the Peloton Bikes Model PL01 which was sold from January 2018 through May 2023 and cost nearly $1,400.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recall was issued by the United States government’s Consumer Product Safety Commission, on Thursday, which also alerted the owners about the risks associated with the bike model. So far, the company has received some 35 reports of the seat post breaking and detaching from the bike during use out of which 13 were of those customers that were injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The free repair offered by Peloton also includes a free seat post that can be self-installed. In a statement, issued by the company they said that they identified 35 reports of “seat posts breaking” out of the 2,160,000 bikes sold as of April 30.<br />

“As part of our commitment to product safety, we are voluntarily recalling the seat post of affected units to provide a free replacement seat post,” said Peloton.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company’s shares have fallen nearly 40 per cent in the past year which is after the rise in popularity that Peloton witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the closure of gyms. Meanwhile, Peloton is also said to be in the process of a corporate reorganisation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In October, the company announced that it was cutting around 500 jobs which was months after it fired nearly 800 people and said it is closing its North American distribution network and giving the delivery work to third-party providers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2021, the New York-based company recalled its treadmill model, Tread+ and Tread, after a child died and more than 70 people reported injuries. It was also around this time that the sales had somewhat slowed down as the vaccine rollout had begun and people were heading back to gyms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the same year, Peloton CEO and co-founder John Foley resigned as the company was struggling to turn business around.&nbsp;<br />

The free repair offered by Peloton also includes a free seat post that can be self-installed. In a statement, issued by the company they said that they identified 35 reports of “seat posts breaking” out of the 2,160,000 bikes sold as of April 30. “As part of our commitment to product safety, we are voluntarily recalling the seat post of affected units to provide a free replacement seat post,” said Peloton. The company’s shares have fallen nearly 40 per cent in the past year which is after the rise in popularity that Peloton witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the closure of gyms. Meanwhile, Peloton is also said to be in the process of a corporate reorganisation. In October, the company announced that it was cutting around 500 jobs which was months after it fired nearly 800 people and said it is closing its North American distribution network and giving the delivery work to third-party providers. In 2021, the New York-based company recalled its treadmill model, Tread+ and Tread, after a child died and more than 70 people reported injuries. It was also around this time that the sales had somewhat slowed down as the vaccine rollout had begun and people were heading back to gyms. <p>The woman booked a Rapido bike on the evening of April 21 and the driver picked her up at at 11:10 p.m. The rider, who allegedly grabbed her phone under the pretence of confirming the one-time password (OTP), instead of going in the intended direction, began moving in the opposite direction.</p>

<p>According to police, despite the woman raising an alarm and instructing the driver to comply with directions, he remained silent, as reported by India Today.</p>

<p>The woman then took her phone back from the rider and noticed he was intoxicated. In retaliation, the rider snatched the phone back&nbsp;and increased the speed.&nbsp;The rider also allegedly groped her, according to reports.</p>

<p>The woman told officials that she had to jump from the moving motorbike to save herself. The footage was captured by roadside CCTV cameras.</p>

<p>''I have been riding with these bikers for a very long time and it's been amazing. When they said they are going to Kashmir, I said I am signing up as well. It's been fantastic. Even though I am Indian, I will go and promote it. I have seen stunning visuals of the place. I am a part of the group of Biker brothers, and it's been quite safe, and they take care of us very well. Dr Aziz has put together this whole event. He had a crew behind us. We were safe and biker brothers are extremely protective of the lady bikers, so we did not have a problem,'' said Priya Shankar, an Indian biker settled in Bahrain.</p>

<p>Sudhir Gharpure and his sales team sat chatting at a big Maruti Suzuki dealership on the outskirts of Mumbai some two hours after its doors were opened on a recent Saturday morning - not a single customer was in sight.</p>

<p>"There used to be close to 15-20 bookings each day, but now we're down to 3-5 on good days," said Gharpure, the general manager at the dealership.</p>

<p>Gharpure's experience is not an isolated one. Across India dealerships are being pushed out of business and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/sensex-nifty-end-lower-dragged-by-auto-stocks-239222">Indian auto sector</a> is going through its biggest slump in nearly two decades.</p>

<p>Passenger vehicle sales fell for eight straight months until June, and in May sales dropped 20.55% - the sharpest recorded fall in 18 years.</p>

<p>Preliminary data indicates passenger vehicle sales may have plunged as much as 30 per cent in July. The slump in India, along with a simultaneous slide in Chinese auto sales, is a blow for automakers wrestling with higher costs driven by more stringent emission norms and a push to develop electric cars.</p>

<p>Unlike in China, where the plunge in cars sales has been caused largely by new emissions rules, India has seen a mix of factors that have combined to erode demand for automobiles.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2016 ban on high-value banknotes, higher tax rates under a new goods and services tax regime, a boom of ride-sharing firms such as Uber and Ola, and a weak rural economy have all played a role.</p>

<p>But many dealers and automakers agree it is a deepening liquidity crunch among <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/government-considering-more-powers-for-rbi-to-regulate-shadow-banking-sector-232030">India's shadow banks</a> that has been the biggest single factor in an auto sales collapse, which some fear may lead to more than a million job losses.</p>

<p>Non-banking finance companies (NBFCs), or shadow banks, have dramatically slashed lending following the collapse of one of the biggest, IL&amp;FS, in late 2018.</p>

<p>IL&amp;FS, or Infrastructure Leasing &amp; Financial Services Ltd, was a behemoth in shadow banking and its defaults and unravelling, amid fraud allegations, have dried up funding for rivals and led to a surge in their borrowing costs.</p>

<p>Non-bank or shadow banking firms generate credit outside traditional lenders, by means such as collective investment vehicles, broker-dealers or funds that invest in bonds and money markets.</p>

<p>In India, NBFCs have in recent years helped fund nearly 55-60% of commercial vehicles both new and used, 30% of passenger cars and nearly 65% of the two-wheelers in the country, according to rating agency ICRA.</p>

<p>To aggravate matters, the stress in the autos market has also prompted banks to begin trimming their exposure to the sector.</p>

<p>"The car doesn't sell, it's the finance that sells," said R.</p>

<p>Vijayaraghavan, a senior marketing consultant at the same Mumbai dealership. "Today the finance is not selling, so the cars are not selling."</p>

<p><strong>Problems amplified</strong></p>

<p>Some 286 dealerships have shut down in the last 18 months across India as rising costs for inventory management have made businesses unviable, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), a lobby group of auto dealers.</p>

<p>"The slowdown in the (NBFC) sector has dragged down vehicle sales growth," said AM Karthik, financial sector head at ICRA.</p>

<p>"Now the auto slowdown is becoming more visible as the liquidity squeeze continues."</p>

<p>Automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors , and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra are feeling the heat and have either cut production or temporarily closed plants to correct mounting stocks.</p>

<p>According to FADA data, passenger vehicle inventories now stand at 50-60 days up from around 45 days earlier, while those of two-wheelers are even higher at 80-90 days. For commercial vehicles, inventory levels range between 45 and 50 days.</p>

<p>"We are asking dealers to maintain an inventory of 21 days, which is almost half of the current levels," said Ashish Kale, president of FADA.<br />
At least four dealers from different brands said, however, there was little scope to reduce inventories as automakers were pushing them to buy stock despite there being no demand even with heavy discounting and other sops on offer.</p>

<p>While 70-75% of car sales were previously financed in-house by NBFC or bank agents sitting at a dealership, that has fallen to about 50%, say, dealers, as buyers struggle to qualify under more stringent lending norms put in place by lenders that are under pressure to shore up their books.</p>

<p>Analysts are more sceptical though and say without vehicle financing becoming cheaper and easier the chances for that are low. With no silver lining in sight, analysts fear bad debts could mount in the auto sector, forcing banks to further reduce their exposure.</p>

Problems amplified Some 286 dealerships have shut down in the last 18 months across India as rising costs for inventory management have made businesses unviable, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), a lobby group of auto dealers. "Now the auto slowdown is becoming more visible as the liquidity squeeze continues." Auto sector crisis: How a shadow banking crisis is hurting car and bike sales in India

<p>After 9,000km of brutal racing across Peru, Bolivia and Argentina the competitors finally crossed the finish line of the 2018 Dakar Rally in C&oacute;rdoba.</p>

<p>Carlos Sainz, Matthias Walkner, Ignacio Casale and Eduard Nikolaev all carried big leads heading into the final 120km special stage around the home of rallying in Argentina and were not to be denied.</p>

<p>For Walkner, it was a maiden victory in the toughest rally raid on the planet, a second for Sainz and Casale while Nikolaev now has a hat-trick of truck titles.</p>

<p><strong>Car</strong></p>

<p>The experience was the name of the game for Carlos Sainz claiming a second Dakar victory and his first since 2010. The Spaniard had it all to lose going into the final few stages but kept his cool and controlled the race perfectly.</p>

<p>Sainz, 55, said: &ldquo;I am extremely happy for me and everyone behind the victory. It was hard when you have such a big lead as it is easy to start making mistakes. This was the hardest Dakar I have ever done, including the ones in Africa.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Matthias Walkner created a little bit of history in Argentina by becoming the first Austrian to ever win the bike category of the Dakar Rally.</p>

<p>The 31-year-old has been a consistent presence towards the front of the pack throughout the race and in a stage won by Kevin Benavides, Walkner brought his KTM home in eighth to start the party.</p>

<p>Walkner said: &ldquo;When you are leading with such a big gap in the biggest event in our sport, it was crazy. Now it is time to celebrate. I was never the guy who was winning a lot or losing a lot, just riding always near the front.&rdquo;</p>

<p>A man succumbed to his injuries as an ambulance allegedly failed to reach the accident site in Rajasthan&#39;s Bharatpur where a bus hit the bike.</p>

<p>The accident happened on Friday when a bus hit a bike killing one and injuring two women, who were later taken to a hospital in a rickshaw.</p>

<p>Assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) Ram Ratan Chaudhary confirmed the incident and said, &quot;We reached the spot after receiving information and a private ambulance was called. The ambulance was taking time to reach the spot so we took them to the hospital in a rickshaw.&quot;</p>

<p>The bus driver is on the run at the moment.</p>

A man succumbed to his injuries as an ambulance allegedly failed to reach the accident site in Rajasthan's Bharatpur where a bus hit the bike. Assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) Ram Ratan Chaudhary confirmed the incident and said, "We reached the spot after receiving information and a private ambulance was called. The ambulance was taking time to reach the spot so we took them to the hospital in a rickshaw." The bus driver is on the run at the moment.
