US President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday (Jan 18) that he will "most likely" give <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tiktok-ban" rel="dofollow">TikTok </a>a 90-day reprieve from a potential ban in the US after he takes office on Monday (Jan 20).&nbsp;
Trump, in an interview with NBC News "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker, said that he hadn't made a final decision but was considering a 90-day extension of the deadline given to the China-based social media company.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I think that would be certainly an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it&rsquo;s appropriate. You know, it&rsquo;s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It&rsquo;s a very big situation,&rdquo; Trump said in a phone interview.

<h2>'To be announced on Monday'</h2>
&ldquo;If I decide to do that, I&rsquo;ll probably announce it on Monday,&rdquo; he said.
However, an extension may not be enough to prevent the app from going dark for at least a day because the current deadline for compliance is Sunday.
TikTok on Friday announced plans to "go dark" in America on Sunday (Jan 19) unless the Biden administration "provides a definitive statement" that the law forcing its sale won't be enforced.

"Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately, TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19," TikTok said.
Earlier on Friday, the US Supreme Court upheld a law requiring TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest its US operations or face a complete ban in the country.&nbsp;
The top court, in its ruling, found that the law banning TikTok was not in violation of free speech rights.

&ldquo;We have seen the most recent statement from TikTok. It is a stunt, and we see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take actions in the next few days before the Trump Administration takes office on Monday,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;We have laid out our position clearly and straightforwardly: actions to implement this law will fall to the next administration. So TikTok and other companies should take up any concerns with them,&rdquo; she said.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller also lauded and thanked Trump and his team for working with the Biden administration on the deal.
Miller also highlighted that it was important for the teams to be on the same table.
"When it comes to the involvement of President-Elect Trump's team, it has been absolutely critical in getting this deal over the line. It's been critical because obviously, as I stand here today, this administration's term in office will expire in five days...We, of course, thank the Trump team for working with us on this cease-fire agreement. We think it's important that they were at the table,&rdquo; he said in a press briefing after the deal was announced.

After 15 months of war, negotiators on Wednesday (Jan 15) reached a phased deal to end the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The much-awaited ceasefire deal includes key points like the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and hostage release, among other things.&nbsp;
The truce will take effect from Sunday (Jan 19) and in the first phase, which will last six weeks or 42 days, there will be a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Central Gaza, and the return of displaced civilians to northern Gaza.
Under the deal, as per news agency Reuters, every day of the ceasefire, Israel must allow the passage of 600 truckloads of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Of these, 50 would carry fuel, and 300 trucks are to be allocated to north Gaza.
During the initial 42 days of the truce, 33 hostages will be released by Hamas militants, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani told the press.
This, he said, will include "civilian women and female recruits, as well as children, elderly people, as well as civilian ill people and wounded".&nbsp;

Biden administration thanks Trump for 'critical' role in Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal

As United States President Joe Biden&rsquo;s term nears its end, his approval rating remains close to his personal worst as most Americans see his presidency as a failure.
According to a CNN survey released on Wednesday (Jan 15), only 36 per cent of US adults said that they approved of his term in the White House, matching his previous record-low rating.

The outgoing president recorded an even lower approval rating while handling immigration (31 per cent), foreign affairs (32 per cent) and the economy (33 per cent).&nbsp;
In comparison, less than half of people approved Biden&rsquo;s handling of healthcare policies (43 per cent), environmental policy (44 per cent) and protecting democracy (46 per cent), which proved to be his strongest.

A majority of 61 per cent of Americans see Biden&rsquo;s overall term in the Oval Office as a failure. Only 38 per cent considered his presidency a success.&nbsp;

The outgoing president&rsquo;s numbers are lowest among the previous Democratic leaders, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, with 68 per cent and 65 per cent of Americans seen as successful presidents, respectively.

Most Americans blamed Biden directly for his failure as a president with 42 per cent citing his personal shortcomings while only 19 per cent attributed external circumstances.
Under the Biden administration, inflation increased, with gas and food prices recording the highest in more than four decades. During Biden&rsquo;s term, 8 million migrants entered the US, recording level high immigration, 60 per cent of which crossed the border illegally.

According to another survey by Gallup which was released on January 7, more than half of Americans said that Biden will be remembered as a &ldquo;poor&rdquo; or &ldquo;below average&rdquo; leader in US history. The polls suggest 37 per cent regarded Biden as a &ldquo;below average&rdquo; US president, while 17 per cent believed he would be remembered as a &ldquo;poor&rdquo; leader.

US Steel directed Reuters to its Thursday statement that it hoped "Biden will do the right thing and adhere to the law by approving a transaction that so clearly enhances US national and economic security."
Nippon paid a hefty premium to clinch the purchase of the No.2 US steel producer in a December 2023 auction, but the deal faced opposition from the powerful United Steelworkers union (USW), as well as politicians.
Biden has previously said he wants US Steel to stay domestically owned and run, while President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to block a foreign takeover of the storied American firm after he takes office on January 20.

In a November letter, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba urged Biden to approve the merger so as to avoid marring recent efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries, Reuters has exclusively reported.
A spokesperson for Ishiba could not be reached for comment on Friday and Japan's trade ministry declined to comment, saying there had been no formal announcement of a decision.
Japan is a key US ally in the Indo-Pacific, where China's economic and military rise has raised concerns in Washington, along with threats from North Korea.

It is also the top investor in the United States and Keidanren, its biggest business lobby, has previously aired concerns that the review was facing political pressure.
Blocking the deal may dissuade international investors from bidding for politically sensitive US companies with a unionized workforce in the short term, said Alistair Ramsey, vice president of steel research at consultancy Rystad Energy.
"Big bids are a risky idea less than 12 months from a presidential election, but big steel producers with traditional operating furnaces, such as Nippon Steel, see the U.S. as an excellent place to produce steel in the long term, despite the market depression there," he added.
Nippon has vowed to fight in the courts any decision to halt the deal, but lawyers including Nick Wall, M&amp;A partner at Allen &amp; Overy, have said mounting any such legal challenge against the US government would be tough.
The two companies had sought to assuage concerns over the merger. Nippon offered to move its US headquarters to Pittsburgh, where the US steelmaker is based and promised to honor all agreements in place between US Steel and USW.
This week, a source familiar with the matter said Nippon Steel had also proposed giving the US government veto power over any potential cuts to US Steel's production capacity, as part of its efforts to secure Biden's approval.
"It is difficult to fully understand the risks involved in Nippon Steel's potential acquisition of US Steel," said a Japanese government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, as did the other sources.
"Nippon Steel has done everything to eliminate risks related to economic securities, including committing not to reduce production."
Nippon Steel faces a USD 565-million penalty payment to U.S. Steel following the deal's collapse, set to prompt a major rethink of its overseas-focused growth strategy.
With the acquisition of US Steel, Nippon Steel aimed to raise its global output capacity to 85 million metric tons a year from 65 million now, nearing its long-term goal of taking capacity to 100 million tons.
US Steel has previously said the deal's failure would put at risk thousands of jobs and it might be forced to close some steel mills, an assertion the USW union called baseless threats and intimidation.
But Atilla Widnell, managing director at Singapore-based trade consultancy Navigate Commodities, said any decision to block the deal was "misguided".
"Nippon Steel is a bona fide operator of overseas assets with a strong and successful track record," said Widnell.
"Even more so, US Steel has acknowledged its assets are in dire need of new large-scale investment and it will not be able to sustain its operational capacity and production in its current state."

"We do not believe that Shamsud Din Jabbar was solely responsible for the Bourbon Street attack. We're aggressively running down every lead, including those of his known associates. That's why we need the public's help. We&rsquo;re asking if anybody has had any interaction with Shamsud Din Jabbar in the last 72 hours, contact us. Anyone who has information, video or pictures, provide it to the FBI," said FBI Agent Alethea Duncan.

Police said that Jabbar drove his pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street at approximately 3:15 am on Wednesday (Jan 1) killing 15 people.
New Orleans Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick described him as being &ldquo;hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.&rdquo; She further added that Jabbar&rsquo;s intention appeared to be to &ldquo;run over as many people as he could.&rdquo; Additionally, two police officers were shot by the suspect, but both are now in stable condition.
The FBI said that he died following a gunfight with the police. After the truck came to a stop, Jabbar opened fire on officers, who returned fire, leading to his death.
