An upcoming minister of Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government has created a stir in the country after she suggested that doctors should be allowed not to give treatment to LGBTQ patients on religious grounds.

Orit Strook, of the Religious Zionist party, made the remarks on Sunday saying that her party is drafting legislation that could potentially allow doctors to refuse treatment to LGBTQ people.

She further stated that a doctor could refuse care to a patient if doing so violates his religious beliefs “as long as there are enough other doctors who can give this service”, reports the Times of Israel newspaper.

The bill she was referring to is part of a wider proposed legislation to allow businesses or private enterprises to refuse service on the grounds of religious conscience.

Kan state broadcaster reported that Netanyahu’s Likud party and Religious Zionism have a deal as part of their coalition government that they will pass the new legislation once they assume full control of the office.

However, Netanyahu denied that the coalition deal provided for such a law, and condemned his colleague’s words.

“MK Orit Strock’s words are unacceptable to me and my colleagues in Likud. The coalition agreements do not allow for discrimination against LGBT people or for harming the right of any citizen in Israel to receive service. Likud will guarantee that there will be no harm to LGBT people or any Israeli citizen,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

However, the talks went on for weeks with Netanyahu forced to meet the demands for senior cabinet posts, some of which he was compelled to grant.

Among his most controversial moves was promising an expanded national security ministry to the head of the Jewish Power party, Itamar Ben Gvir, who has a long history of using incendiary rhetoric against Arabs.

It is currently unknown when the new government will be sworn in, but Netanyahu told Herzog that he intended to do so "as soon as possible", reports AFP news agency.

Even before the ministers take charge, speculations have gained momentum on the reforms planned by the incoming government.

Former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that his right wing, religious camp was on the cusp of a great election win. Earlier,&nbsp;exit polls also predicted his bloc gaining a slim parliamentary majority, paving the way for his comeback.

"We have won a huge vote of confidence from the people of&nbsp;Israel," a smiling Netanyahu told supporters at his election headquarters in Jerusalem. "We are on the brink of a very big victory," he told the cheering crowd.

According to exit polls, the country’s longest-serving PM is poised to take at least 61 or 62 seats in the 120-seat Knesset (parliament), said a local media report. The actual outcome of the elections may differ from the early exit polls which are&nbsp;not expected until later this week.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the incumbent Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s centrist Yesh Atid party is projected to win at least 24 seats. On the other hand, Religious Zionist Party, led by Itamar Ben-Gvir is poised to get at least 14 seats making it the third-largest party.&nbsp;

This is the country’s fifth election in less than four years which has exasperated many voters, however, reports suggest that this did not affect the voter turnout which was the highest since 1999. Netanyahu after 12 years was defeated last year by an unlikely coalition of centrist Yair Lapid and his partner Naftali Bennett which formed an alliance also including an Arab party for the first time.&nbsp;

Furthermore, he has reportedly been counting on support from Ben-Gvir, who was a member of a group called Kach, which is on Israel and the United States’ “terrorist” watchlists and the prospect of them forming a coalition has raised concerns among allies including Washington.&nbsp;

The actual outcome of the elections may differ from the early exit polls which are not expected until later this week. × Meanwhile, the incumbent Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s centrist Yesh Atid party is projected to win at least 24 seats. On the other hand, Religious Zionist Party, led by Itamar Ben-Gvir is poised to get at least 14 seats making it the third-largest party. This is the country’s fifth election in less than four years which has exasperated many voters, however, reports suggest that this did not affect the voter turnout which was the highest since 1999. Netanyahu after 12 years was defeated last year by an unlikely coalition of centrist Yair Lapid and his partner Naftali Bennett which formed an alliance also including an Arab party for the first time. Morning news brief: Netanyahu claims victory, Pelosi's attacker pleads not guilty and more

The voting for the fifth general election in less than four years began on Tuesday to determine the 25th Knesset.

People were seen lining up&nbsp;outiside the polling stations, which opened at 5 am (GMT).&nbsp;They have until 8 pm (GMT) to cast their ballot.

The latest election follows the collapse of the coalition government headed by Caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who was successful in ousting Benjamin <a name="_Hlk118194066">Netanyahu </a>last year.

Tuesday's vote is being held in the wake of soaring violence across Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.

Several opinion polls prior to the Tuesday voting showed right-wing Likud Party head Netanyahu leading by a slender margin.

Polls by local channels have predicted the Netanyahu-led bloc to get 60 seats, one short of a majority in the 120-member Knesset.

All the surveys found Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s current coalition partners together garnering 56 seats, with the Arab-majority Hadash-Ta’al faction forecast to receive four mandates, reports AFP news agency.

Not only did Lapid face heat in his own backyard, but even the Palestinians did not seem too enthused by his idea. According to an AFP report, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas charged that Israel, "through its current premeditated and deliberated policies" was "destroying" any prospect of a two-state solution.

Terming Lapid's comments 'positive', Abbas added a caveat saying, "...the real test of the seriousness and credibility of (his) position is the Israeli government sitting at the negotiating table immediately, to implement the two-state solution."

As reported by WION, during his speech on Thursday,&nbsp;Lapid sought to highlight that Israeli Arabs were not 'enemies'. He underlined that his coalition government has an Arab party and that there are Arab judges in Israel's supreme court. There were Arab doctors in Israel saving lives, he said.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that Israel is headed for elections in November. Poll surveys show that Netanyahu might be in for a comeback. Thus, experts are of the view that Lapid's speech was meant to win over the Israeli left, Arabs and the centre-right.&nbsp;

Bennett said in a televised statement as he stood alongside Lapid, "We are standing before you today in a moment that is not easy, but with the understanding, we made the right decision for Israel."

According to Bennett's spokesperson, a vote will be held in parliament next week after which Lapid will take over the premiership.

Now, instead of Bennett, Lapid will host US President Joe Biden, who is due to visit Israel in July.

The move by Bennett and Lapid highlighted that Israeli governance remains in crisis as Israel is holding the fifth election in three years, according to Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute think-tank.

Head of a centrist party in the coalition, Defence Minister Benny Gantz said "I think the government did very good work over the past year. It's a shame the country has to be dragged into elections."

Israeli media reported that snap parliamentary election will likely take place in October even though the date has not yet been announced.

Defending his government's record, Bennett said it had boosted economic growth, cut unemployment, and eliminated the deficit for the first time in 14 years.

Hailing the end of "the worst government in Israel's history", Netanyahu pledged to form "a strong and stable government" of right-wingers.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has said that his government has a “week or two” to stop its internal problems or else they may face collapse. In a statement to the Israeli Knesset, he said that Nir Orbach, who is a member of Bennett’s own right-wing Yamina party, will not be voting along with the coalition. “We have a week or week two to settle the problems in the coalition and then we can last a long time to continue the good we are doing,” Bennett told a special session of the Knesset according to Reuters. “But if we don’t succeed, we won’t be able to continue,” he added.

Since taking over the position from Benjamin Netanyahu, Bennett has faced a number to problems when it comes to keeping the coalition of eight parties together. He was sworn in as the Israeli President in June last year and the United Arab List (UAL), a party which stands with the Palestinian population of Israel, has constantly threatened to withdraw support from the ruling coalition.

“I have informed the prime minister that based on the current situation, I am no longer part of the coalition,” Orbach said in a statement published by several Israeli media outlets.

Currently, the ruling coalition is two votes short of the majority in the 120-member Knesset.

Bennett appealed to all the parties for support as he suggested that the alternative will be “much worse”. Foreign minister Yair Lapid also took to Twitter to ask for support as he wrote that the current coalition is “the only way to protect Israeli democracy and the strength of the state of Israel.”

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has said that his government has a “week or two” to stop its internal problems or else they may face collapse. In a statement to the Israeli Knesset, he said that Nir Orbach, who is a member of Bennett’s own right-wing Yamina party, will not be voting along with the coalition.

He was sworn in as the Israeli President in June last year and the United Arab List (UAL), a party which stands with the Palestinian population of Israel, has constantly threatened to withdraw support from the ruling coalition. “I have informed the prime minister that based on the current situation, I am no longer part of the coalition,” Orbach said in a statement published by several Israeli media outlets. Bennett appealed to all the parties for support as he suggested that the alternative will be “much worse”. Israeli government has ‘week or two’ to avoid collapse, says PM Naftali Bennett

10th May 2021 saw the first rockets fired from Gaza towards Israel. On the first anniversary of the Hamas-Israel conflict, which lasted for 11 days, WION correspondent Jodie Cohen, spoke exclusively with Ambassador Danny Danon, about the way forward towards peace in a fraught region.

Danon is Israel’s former Ambassador to the UN, and current Chairman of World Likud.

Likud is, of course, Israel’s largest political party, which leads the Opposition and is headed by former Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

WION: Ambassador Danon, thank you for speaking with WION… On the first anniversary of rockets fired from Gaza, this year we’ve again seen unrest on the Temple Mount / Al Aqsa compound…what do you think is the short-term solution to preventing further violence?

Danny Danon: Thank you for having me today. I think what we have seen today is the continuation of incitement. Incitement on a holiday that is Ramadan – a Muslim holiday – to incite against the Jews and unfortunately, we see a wave of terror attacks here in Israel targeting the civilians, using the Temple Mount as a reason. Israel is a peaceful country and Jerusalem is the peaceful capital of Israel with total freedom of religion. The answer to that is to stop the incitement, to demand the local leadership not to allow those incitements to be all over the social media and not to allow those radical leaders to take advantage of a holiday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

WION: What’s the long-term solution for Israelis and Palestinians to be able to live side by side in peace?

Danny Danon: I think eventually we will have to negotiate and unfortunately, we do not see any viable partner. Only recently, we have signed the Abraham Accords with a few Arab countries and we are very proud of that and the peace agreements we already have with Jordan and Egypt. So, we are capable of compromising and signing peace agreements, but we need a partner for that. I think President (Mahmoud) Abbas is not a partner, He is not willing to negotiate with Israel or to stop the incitement or stop paying the salaries of convicted terrorists. So, we will have to wait for a new leader to emerge who will be ready to sit down, negotiate and achieve peace. &nbsp;

WION: You’re currently Chairman of World Likud…can Likud form another government under former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?

Danny Danon: I absolutely think we can. But we need to bring a lot of people out to vote. Last time, a lot of people on our side were disappointed and they did not come out to vote. To win the next elections, we need to mobilise and inspire them to be active and to come out to vote.

WION: Your book, ‘In the Lion’s Den’, sets out a roadmap for Israel’s future on the regional and global stage. Where does the roadmap lead?

Danny Danon: In the book, I spoke about the five years I spend at the UN (United Nations). I describe not only what I achieved – the success and disappointments – but also a vision for Israel. I am optimistic that we have a great future in the region. We have a lot of allies and we will hopefully sign peace treaties with other countries in the region. I think that will be the answer to the radical ideas that are being spread by Iran in the region.

WION: Is your book your manifesto for becoming a future Likud leader, or even a leader of a new party?

Danny Danon: I am a proud member of the Likud party. I am chairman of the World Likud and I intend to stay active in my party. I ran in the past for the position of chairman in the party and definitely I intend to come back to public life in the future using the skills and connections I acquired at the UN for the benefit of the people of the country I love so much. &nbsp;

In the deal, it seems Netanyahu will admit to two counts of breach of trust and face a suspended prison sentence. He will also have to undergo a few months of prison time, which will be converted to community service. &nbsp;
