Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College rape-murder prime accused Sanjay Roy, in a dramatic turn of events, has claimed he was falsely implicated. Roy, who was charged in court last week, accused former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal of orchestrating a conspiracy against him, alleging that senior officers were involved and had threatened him.

Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested in August of this year for the heinous crime. On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was found brutally raped and murdered on the premises of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, located in the capital of West Bengal.

Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and Tala police station in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, were remanded in CBI custody till September 17 by a court in Sealdah on Sunday (Sep 15).

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleged in court that there "could be a bigger conspiracy" and that both Ghosh and Mondal played "vital roles" in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar.

A nexus to hide the crime

The CBI seeking three-day custody of the two men alleged that Ghosh and Mondal tried to "downplay" the horrific incident as well as "shield" the heinous crime and that the agency wanted to interrogate them "face-to-face".

A lawyer for CBI said that the agency had obtained call detail records (CDR) of the two on the night of the incident and probe suggested a possible nexus between the two.

"We want to confront both of them," said the CBI lawyer.

The CBI alleged that Mondal took an "unusually long time to arrive at the scene of the crime," even though it was "only a five-minute drive." According to the investigative agency, the Tala police station in-charge was "informed about the incident at 10.03 am but he reached the spot at 11 am."

Furthermore, the lawyer pointed out a "14-hour delay in registering an FIR," and also raised questions regarding the filing of a "general diary by the police, stating that the victim was lying unconscious".

"He was obligated to register the FIR. They tried to pass it off as a suicide. There was a clear dereliction of duty. Custodial interrogation of both individuals is necessary."

Netizens’ reactions to the language barrier for non-Kannada speakers

One X user, agreeing to the need for learning the local language, said, “Yes, true. I lived in Karnataka some years ago. I did learn Kannada to speak with my friends, especially those who came from rural parts. Making an effort to learn the native language is respecting them and their culture. It’s basic decency. I still can speak it.”

“So as per the so-called logic, Kannadigas in Maharashtra must speak in Marathi. It should be fine if the Maharashtra government enforces the language on them. It takes a huge amount of time to learn one’s own mother tongue. Not knowing someone’s language does not mean disrespect,” said a second user.

A third X user said, “Every Indian state has its own language, so in your point of view, everyone should learn multiple languages. This is basically not possible for everyone, so we need one official or maybe national language for that, and we should respect every culture and language as well.”

How dashcams can help commuters?

Dashcams can give you first-hand evidence of a car accident. This is one of the main reasons why many drivers have decided to invest their money in dashcams. Another important reason for installing a dash cam is that it will help you report undisciplined drivers. It can also be used with the helmet when riding a bike.

Dashcams can also save you from parking accidents. Parking can be a nightmare, especially in metro cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi. With dashcams, the parking accidents can be recorded & produced to police.

While hearing the tragic Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, on Tuesday, referred to the Aruna Shanbaug incident. He said that due to ingrained patriarchal biases in the nation, women doctors are targeted at an increasing pace as women join the workplace and that India cannot wait for another rape to bring some real changes on the ground.

In 1973, Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse at KEM hospital was brutally attacked, sexually assaulted and left in a vegetative state.

Shanbaug, who was 25 years old at the time, was working in the hospital's surgery department. At the time of the tragic incident, she was engaged to be married.

On the night of November 27, 1973, she was brutally attacked by a ward attendant at the hospital. The rapist, identified as Sohanlal Bharta Walmiki, sexually assaulted her before strangling her using a dog chain.

The brutal attack left Shanbaug with severe brain damage and she fell into a persistent vegetative state (PVS).

Reportedly, the ward boy attacked her because Aruna accused him of stealing food meant for medical experiments at the hospital and threatened to report the theft to hospital authorities.

She remained in PVS, unable to speak and reliant on others, until she died in 2015. Till her death, she was kept alive through forced feeding.

Given Aruna Shanbaug's quality of life, or the lack of it, she even became the centre of a national debate over euthanasia in 2011.

That year, a journalist Pinki Virani — the writer of a book on Aruna titled 'Aruna's Story' — filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking permission for euthanasia. On March 7, 2011, the Supreme Court rejected the petition for active euthanasia. The court said that Aruna was not brain-dead and responded to certain stimuli.

After years in a persistent vegetative state, Aruna contracted pneumonia and died of it on May 18, 2015. Her attacker, Sohanlal Bharta Walmiki, escaped sexual assault charges as "sodomy" was not classified as rape under Indian law back then. What is the Aruna Shanbaug case? In 1973, Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse at KEM hospital was brutally attacked, sexually assaulted and left in a vegetative state. Shanbaug, who was 25 years old at the time, was working in the hospital's surgery department. At the time of the tragic incident, she was engaged to be married. Euthanasia debate Given Aruna Shanbaug's quality of life, or the lack of it, she even became the centre of a national debate over euthanasia in 2011. Instead, he was charged with robbery and attempted murder and only served a seven-year sentence. He was released in 1980. (With inputs from agencies)

India: Woman dental student in Rohtak alleges assault by doctor, accused arrested

India's premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Monday (August 19) obtained court permission to conduct a lie detector test of the main accused in the heinous rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata.

As per reports, the permission to put Sanjay Roy through a polygraph test has been granted by the Kolkata High Court.

The development comes a day after the Supreme Court of India had stepped in, taking suo moto cognisance of the matter on Sunday (August 18). A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the matter on Tuesday (August 20).

Who is the rape-murder accused Sanjay Roy?

On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. A preliminary autopsy of her body suggested that the trainee doctor was subjected to violent sexual assault.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the case.

A preliminary investigation into the matter revealed that Roy, at the time of the crime, had consumed alcohol. Citing sources, India Today reported that Sanjay went to a place behind the hospital to drink alcohol and that he used to watch porn while drinking.

CBI investigation continues

On Tuesday (Aug 13), a bench of the Calcutta High Court observed that there had been no significant progress in investigations made by the Kolkata Police in five days since the tragic incident. Expressing its dissatisfaction, the court ordered the transfer of the probe into the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor to India's central investigative agency, the CBI.

Since then, the CBI has interrogated multiple doctors of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the R G Kar hospital has been grilled by the investigative agency for four consecutive days.

Meanwhile, in an interesting twist to the case, Senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh has reportedly submitted to the CBI documents related to the corruption of Dr Sandip Ghosh.

The TMC leader claimed that junior doctors of the hospital have supplied all the information and documents related to Sandip Ghosh's corruption. He also said that if CBI finds these documents necessary, the doctors will be happy to cooperate with the agency.

"I have handed over to CBI all the documents given to me by the doctors of RG Kar Hospital...If before 23rd August a breakthrough is reached, then it is better as the arrested accused is presented before the court on that day, then the remand copy will indicate he was the lone culprit or not," said Ghosh.
