Kohli: Have total respect for Kumble

Anil Kumble will remain India&#39;s coach for the tour of West Indies subject to his acceptance, Committee of Administrators (COA) chairman Vinod Rai said today, insisting that only the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will decide the next head coach.

&quot;Coach selection has been entrusted to the CAC which selected Anil Kumble last year for a one-year contract. Now the process has to be followed. But since the process has been delayed, Kumble, subject to his accepting, will be there for the West Indies tour,&quot; Rai told reporters after a meeting of the COA here.

India will tour the West Indies for a five-ODI series starting June 23 followed by a lone Twenty20 match on July 9.

The COA, now a three-member panel after the controversial exit of historian Ramachandra Guha, had a day long meeting in New Delhi.

Asked whether coach recruitment could have been handled better by the BCCI, Rai said the matter has been blown out of proportion with reports claiming a rift between captain Virat Kohi and Kumble.

&quot;The fact is that it was a one year contract so a process was followed. I don&#39;t know why is this controversy. I have spoken to both of them (Kohli and Kumble)and neither of them have confirmed what has come out,&quot; he said.

The former batsman had sought more clarity on the subject so that he can take an informed decision.

To address a host of conflict of interest issues, the BCCI will soon have an ethics officer.

India skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday rejected the reports of him having any rift with head coach Anil Kumble, saying they are mere speculations which have been created by the people ahead of the team`s much anticipated high octane opening match of the Champions Trophy against Pakistan to be played at Edgbaston Cricket Ground on Sunday.

&quot;There are lot of speculations and lot of things being written by people who are not even part of the change room, which is very strange. There are no problems whatsoever,&quot; Kohli told the media.

After India left for England to defend the Champions Trophy, it was reported that all was not well between Kohli and Kumble.

Virat Kohli scotches reports of rift between him and Kumble ahead of match with arch-rival Pakistan

Ramachandra Guha who resigned on May 28 as the BCCI administrator citing &quot;personal reasons&quot; had actually quit because his &quot;views were at odds with the direction the Committee&quot; reveals his resignation letter which leaked in the media on Friday.

The Supreme Court had on January 30 appointed a four-member committee of administrators headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai to run the affairs of BCCI and implement court-approved recommendations of the Justice R M Lodha panel on reforms in the cash-rich cricket body.

Excerpts from &nbsp;Ramachandra Guha&#39;s resignation letter:

Sunil Gavaskar is head of a company which represents Indian cricketers while commenting on those cricketers as part of the BCCI TV commentary panel. This is a clear conflict of interest. Either he must step down/withdraw himself from PMG completely or stop being a commentator for BCCI.

I think prompt and swift action on this matter is both just and necessary. COA&rsquo;s credibility and effectiveness hinges on our being able to take bold and correct decisions on such matters. The &lsquo;superstar&rsquo; culture that afflicts the BCCI means that the more famous the player (former or present) the more leeway he is allowed in violating norms and procedures. (Dhoni was captain of the Indian team while holding a stake in a firm that represented some current India players.) This must stop &ndash; and only we can stop it.

Yet, despite my warnings, no action has been initiated in the several months that the Committee has been in operation.

The BCCI has accorded preferential treatment to some national coaches, by giving them ten-month contracts for national duty, thus allowing them to work as IPL coaches/mentors for the remaining two months. This was done in an adhoc and arbitrary manner.

I have repeatedly pointed out that it is contrary to the spirit of the Lodha Committee for coaches or the support staff of the Indian senior or junior team, or for staff at the National Cricket Academy, to have contracts in the Indian Premier League.

Conflict of interest is rampant in the State Associations as well. One famous former cricketer is contracted by media houses to comment on active players while serving as President of his State Association. Others have served as office-bearers in one Association and simultaneously as coaches or managers in another. The awarding of business contracts to friends and relatives by office-bearers is reported to be fairly widespread.

The way in which the contract of Anil Kumble, the current Head Coach of the senior team, has been handled. The Indian team&rsquo;s record this past season has been excellent; and even if the players garner the bulk of the credit, surely the Head Coach and his support staff also get some. In a system based on justice and merit, the Head Coach&rsquo;s term would have been extended. Instead, Kumble was left hanging, and then told the post would be re-advertised afresh.

Ever since the Supreme Court announced the formation of the COA, we have been inundated, individually and collectively, by hundreds of mails asking us to address various ills that afflict Indian cricket and its administration. While many of these issues were trivial or clearly beyond our purview, there was one concern that we should have done far more to address. This concerns the callous treatment to domestic cricket and cricketers, namely, those who represent their state in the Ranji Trophy, the Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and other inter-state tournaments. The IPL may be Indian cricket&rsquo;s showpiece; but surely the enormous revenues it generates should be used to make our domestic players more financially secure? There are many more Indian cricketers who make their living via the Ranji Trophy than via IPL; besides, for us to have a consistently strong Test team (especially overseas) we need a robust inter-state competition and therefore must seek to compensate domestic players better.

And yet, shockingly, Ranji match fees have remained at a very low level (a mere Rs 30,000 odd for each day of play); moreover, cheques for match fees sent by the BCCI are sometimes not passed on by the state associations to the players. We need to learn from best practices in other countries, where domestic players are awarded annual contracts like those in the national team, while their match fees are reasonably competitive too.

After resigning from BCCI, Ramachandra Guha hits out at Gavaskar

Historian Ramachandra Guha, appointed by the Supreme Court as one of the four administrators of BCCI, today informed the court that he had resigned from the post due to personal reasons.

A vacation bench of Justices M M Shantanagoudar and Deepak Gupta was informed by Guha&#39;s counsel that he had tendered his resignation on May 28 to Vinod Rai, Chairman of the Committee of Administrators of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The court said a special bench was seized of the matter and the petition should, therefore, be filed in the registry.

Advocate Rakesh Sinha, who mentioned the matter before the bench, said he had filed the petition to inform the court about Guha&#39;s decision to resign as the main matter would be coming up for hearing in July.

Historian Ramachandra Guha, appointed by the Supreme Court as one of the four administrators of BCCI, today informed the court that he had resigned from the post due to personal reasons. A vacation bench of Justices M M Shantanagoudar and Deepak Gupta was informed by Guha's counsel that he had tendered his resignation on May 28 to Vinod Rai, Chairman of the Committee of Administrators of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The court said a special bench was seized of the matter and the petition should, therefore, be filed in the registry. Advocate Rakesh Sinha, who mentioned the matter before the bench, said he had filed the petition to inform the court about Guha's decision to resign as the main matter would be coming up for hearing in July. The apex court had on January 30 appointed a four-member committee of administrators headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai to run the affairs of BCCI and implement court-approved recommendations of the Justice R M Lodha panel on reforms in the cash-rich cricket body. Sports minister Vijay Goel today made it clear that the government will not allow any bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan till the time &quot;cross-border terrorism&quot; does not stop.

The minister&#39;s firm statement comes on a day the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board are meeting in Dubai to discuss their bilateral ties, which have remained suspended since 2012 due to diplomatic tensions after terror attacks in India.

This also comes before the June 4 Champions league match between India and Pakistan in Cardiff.

&quot;BCCI should speak to the government before giving any proposal to Pakistan. I have made it clear that bilateral cricket with Pakistan is not possible till the time there is cross-border terror. We have, however, no say on multilateral events (ICC tournaments),&quot; Goel told reporters in New Delhi.&nbsp;

The PCB has already sent a legal notice to BCCI claiming damages in tune of USD 60 million (Rs 387 crore approx) for allegedly not honouring the MoU that had stated five bilateral series in the cycle between 2015-2023.

It is learnt that the BCCI officials led by joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary will explain to their PCB counterparts that the series can&#39;t be held without government permission and would also request them to withdraw the case.

Indian government says 'no' to bilateral cricket with Pakistan

The Indian cricket board has sent a security officer to England amid concerns over team safety in the Champions Trophy following the Manchester bomb attack.

Acting president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) CK Khanna confirmed to AFP that Neeraj Kumar, security in charge and consultant of its anti-corruption unit, left for England on Tuesday.

&quot;Neeraj Kumarji was anyhow supposed to travel with the team but had to go early after the attack,&quot; a senior BCCI official told AFP. &quot;He will definitely go to the venues where India is scheduled to play and assess the security,&quot; the official added.

Kumar, a former Delhi Police Commissioner, was the head of security when the ICC World T20 Championship was hosted by India last year.

Choudhary further said that any decision on revoking the Members Participation Agreement (MPA) could only be taken by the BCCI, which has called for a special general body meeting (SGM) on May 7.

With the new revenue model getting the nod, BCCI will now have to do with what they have in the eight-year cycle. The England Cricket Board received $143 million while Zimbabwe Cricket received $94 million.

The remaining seven Full Members will receive $132 million each. The Associate Members will receive a funding of $280 million. This model was passed by a vote of 13 to 1.&nbsp;

India runs the risk of not participating in this year's Champions Trophy

Cricket&#39;s global governing body has received a thumping mandate from its members to proceed with a broad restructure aimed at curbing the dominance of the &quot;Big Three&quot; - Australia, India and England.

The sweeping changes were passed in a vote during a meeting at the International Cricket Council (ICC) headquarters in Dubai, the governing body said in a statement Thursday.&nbsp;

&quot;This model was passed 13 votes to one,&quot; the ICC said in a statement.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India stands to lose $277 million revenue over the next eight years under the changes, with more flowing to minor Test nations and associate members like Ireland and Afghanistan.&nbsp;The restructure was agreed to in principle in February by the majority of Test playing nations - including England and Australia - but India opposed the proposal.

&quot;A revised constitution was also approved by 12 votes to two,&quot; it said, adding the changes would be put to the ICC in June for adoption.

The shake-up amends the ICC&#39;s constitution and financial structure so that revenue is more equitably distributed among members and less power is concentrated in the hands of the &quot;Big Three&quot;.

It reverses a much-criticised ICC decision in 2014 to relinquish more control to Australia, England and India, the world&#39;s most powerful cricketing boards.

The tug of war between the ICC and BCCI over financial matters has often&nbsp;seen long, protracted battles fought in boardrooms which have sometimes spilled out in the open, however, this time the ICC along with its other members have clearly outmanoeuvred the world&#39;s richest cricket body.&nbsp;

Cricket's global governing body has received a thumping mandate from its members to proceed with a broad restructure aimed at curbing the dominance of the "Big Three" - Australia, India and England. The sweeping changes were passed in a vote during a meeting at the International Cricket Council (ICC) headquarters in Dubai, the governing body said in a statement Thursday. "This model was passed 13 votes to one," the ICC said in a statement. The Board of Control for Cricket in India stands to lose $277 million revenue over the next eight years under the changes, with more flowing to minor Test nations and associate members like Ireland and Afghanistan. The restructure was agreed to in principle in February by the majority of Test playing nations - including England and Australia - but India opposed the proposal. "A revised constitution was also approved by 12 votes to two," it said, adding the changes would be put to the ICC in June for adoption. The shake-up amends the ICC's constitution and financial structure so that revenue is more equitably distributed among members and less power is concentrated in the hands of the "Big Three". It reverses a much-criticised ICC decision in 2014 to relinquish more control to Australia, England and India, the world's most powerful cricketing boards. Despite India's opposition to the reforms, it was a former BCCI boss who was instrumental in pushing through the changes. ICC chairman Shashank Manohar, who was asked by the council to defer his resignation last month to see the reform package through, declared it "another step forward for world cricket". "I am confident we can provide a strong foundation for the sport to grow and improve globally in the future through the adoption of the revised financial model and governance structure," he said. The BCCI is clearly unhappy with the latest restructuring as media reports have been speculating for weeks that India might pull out of the Champions Trophy to be held in the UK between June 1 to 8th to protest against ICC's latest move. &quot;We have just witnessed a magnificent game of Test cricket where players from both teams gave their all and emotions were running high during and after the match,&quot; ICC chief executive David Richardson said in a statement.

Players have gone half-a-month without their entitled allowance of Rs 6,800 (101 USD) per day and have to pay out of their own pockets for their post-match dinner or rely on parents for money.

According to a report in the Indian Express, U-19 coach Rahul Dravid, the players, and support staff have not been paid for a fortnight now. This is because there is no official signatory to release the funds after the apex court removed BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke. The cash withdrawal limit of Rs 24,000 (356 USD) a week after the Centre&#39;s demonetisation policy has only added to the misery of the U-19 team.

After BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Shirke were kicked out, the board is left with joint-secretary Amitabh Choudhary and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhary. But a resolution has to be passed by the board members to make one of them the new signatory to release the funds.

The report says that the Committee of Administrators (COA) has allowed BCCI CEO Rahul Johri to dispense funds for the senior team, currently in Hyderabad for one-off Test against Bangladesh, for their daily allowances but the junior team seems to have been forgotten.

The daily quotes a player on condition of anonymity saying that the team is getting by because the breakfast is complimentary at the posh hotel they have been put up in. One meal is provided by the host state association. But dinner becomes a big problem for them as one sandwich costs over Rs 1500 (22 USD) if they order in-house. This forces the players to go out for supper after a tiring day on the field.

The saddest part is that the players cannot even complain to anyone as there is no authority to complain to. According to the report, the players are now relying on monetary support from their families.

The junior team is currently on their home tour against the Under-19 team of England.

Cricket: Supreme Court's strict measures against BCCI have left U-19 team without any money for dinner

The Indian cricket team&#39;s media manager Nishant Arora has tendered his resignation following Committee of Administrators (COA)&#39;s decision that Delhi office of BCCI would be shut down.

It was learnt that Arora tendered his resignation last evening after he was told that he has to shift to Mumbai at Cricket House where the staff works. He also didn&#39;t go to Hyderabad where India will play Bangladesh in a one-off Test from February 9.

The Delhi office recruits were all former president Anurag Thakur&#39;s staff and with him being removed by Supreme Court, it was imperative that they would be laid off.

COA member Diana Edulji said that they have not named anyone but had only instructed for the closure of the office.

&quot;We had just said that President&#39; s Office in Delhi should be shut down and all those recruited in Delhi office will need to go. We never named Nishant but if he is a Delhi Office recruit then he has to go. But if his media manager&#39;s contract is independent of it, then Rahul (BCCI CEO Rahul Johri) takes a final call. Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin&#39;s nomination paper for the post of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) president has been rejected by the returning officer.

A source in the HCA said that Azharuddin&#39;s application was rejected by returning officer K Rajiv Reddy who was not sure whether the BCCI has lifted the ban on him for alleged match-fixing and whether he is a HCA voter or not.

&quot;Azharuddin&#39;s nomination paper was rejected by the returning officer on scrutiny. The returning officer wrote to the BCCI whether his ban for match-fixing has been lifted or not. The BCCI did not reply,&quot; a source in the HCA said.

Another source, however, said that the returning officer should have written to the Lodha Committee instead of the BCCI.

There was also the issue of whether Azharuddin is enrolled as a HCA voter or not. &quot;I am sad and disappointed. I have been cleared by the court of&nbsp;all charges,&quot; Azharuddin said when asked about the rejection of his nomination. 
Azharuddin had filed his nomination for the top post in HCA earlier this week.

Azharuddin, who led India in three successive World Cups (1992, 1996, 1999), has been banned for life by the BCCI for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandal that rocked Indian cricket in 2000. After a long legal battle, Azharuddin received a favourable order from the Andhra High Court in 2011, but the BCCI is yet to officially lift his ban. &nbsp;

Hyderabad Cricket Association rejects Azhar's prez nomination

According to a trail of emails in possession of DNA, after being sacked by the Supreme court, Board of Control for Cricket in India&#39;s (BCCI) secretary Ajay Shirke made several calls to England and Wales Cricket Board&#39;s (ECB) president Giles Clarke trying to convince him to call off India tour.

In the emails, Giles writes that Shirke told him the England team may face security issues in India because of funds crunch in state cricket associations.

In the email sent on January 6, a copy of which is in possession of DNA, Giles asks BCCI chief executive officer Rahul Johri to clarify the ground situation following SC orders.

&quot;I have received calls from Mr Shirke who I understand is no longer the Honorary Secretary of BCCI. Can you please confirm to me that the England team will continue to be looked after by the BCCI in the usual fashion, with proper security, player daily allowance payments, hotel bills covered and the like, with transport organised at all times.

&quot;Obviously, it is entirely a matter for BCCI where matches are played, but please advise soonest that the schedule will be adhered to, or any changes,&quot; Giles wrote to Johri.

ECB was concerned about the security of its team for the One-Day International and T20I series as the English team returned to India on the same day.

With sacked BCCI president Anurag Thakur facing perjury and contempt of court charges, this issue might land Shirke in trouble.

Having received the mail from Giles, Johri replied apprising the ECB chief about the factual situation.

&quot;As you must have followed, the Supreme Court has delivered their verdict early this week, and we are expected to work with the court-appointed administrators, who will be appointed by the 19th of this month and till such time, we are making every effort to ensure that the matches live up to the expectations of all our stakeholders, including ECB.

&quot;We have been in touch with all the hosting centres and they have expressed confidence that the games will be managed successfully, just like always, and as on date, we do not anticipate any form of disruption to the series,&quot; Johri wrote in his reply.

Giles wrote again the following day (January 7) first by thanking Johri for the assurance, but he once again confirmed that Shirke had discussed team&#39;s security and safety of English players apart from other issues.

&quot;His (Shirke) concern was the BCCI and relevant association having funds and expertise to manage security and safety of our players, and transport, allowances, all usual issues for a tour,&quot; Giles sent a brief mail.

According to a source, the Lodha panel is aware of the entire conversation and will produce the email trail before the apex court on January 19, the day when set of administrators would take over BCCI functioning.

DNA has been reporting how BCCI&#39;s sacked and ineligible officials have been trying to derail reforms suggested by Justice Lodha Commission, following SC&#39;s January 2 interim orders.

In one such instance last week, former joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary attempted to create a hurdle when the selection committee had gathered to pick the team for the ODI and the T20I series.

After the January 2 verdict, as many as 22 state associations adopted the Lodha panel recommendations.

MCA appoints Shirke

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cricket Association&#39;s (MCA) managing committee last Friday appointed Shirke as its representative at the BCCI meetings.

E-mail trail shows Ajay Shirke made several calls to England and Wales Cricket Board's president Giles Clarke

By Chander Shekhar Luthra According to a trail of emails in possession of DNA, after being sacked by the Supreme court, Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) secretary Ajay Shirke made several calls to England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) president Giles Clarke trying to convince him to call off India tour. In the emails, Giles writes that Shirke told him the England team may face security issues in India because of funds crunch in state cricket associations. In the email sent on January 6, a copy of which is in possession of DNA, Giles asks BCCI chief executive officer Rahul Johri to clarify the ground situation following SC orders. "I have received calls from Mr Shirke who I understand is no longer the Honorary Secretary of BCCI. Can you please confirm to me that the England team will continue to be looked after by the BCCI in the usual fashion, with proper security, player daily allowance payments, hotel bills covered and the like, with transport organised at all times. "Obviously, it is entirely a matter for BCCI where matches are played, but please advise soonest that the schedule will be adhered to, or any changes," Giles wrote to Johri. ECB was concerned about the security of its team for the One-Day International and T20I series as the English team returned to India on the same day. With sacked BCCI president Anurag Thakur facing perjury and contempt of court charges, this issue might land Shirke in trouble. Having received the mail from Giles, Johri replied apprising the ECB chief about the factual situation. "As you must have followed, the Supreme Court has delivered their verdict early this week, and we are expected to work with the court-appointed administrators, who will be appointed by the 19th of this month and till such time, we are making every effort to ensure that the matches live up to the expectations of all our stakeholders, including ECB. "We have been in touch with all the hosting centres and they have expressed confidence that the games will be managed successfully, just like always, and as on date, we do not anticipate any form of disruption to the series," Johri wrote in his reply. Giles wrote again the following day (January 7) first by thanking Johri for the assurance, but he once again confirmed that Shirke had discussed team's security and safety of English players apart from other issues. "His (Shirke) concern was the BCCI and relevant association having funds and expertise to manage security and safety of our players, and transport, allowances, all usual issues for a tour," Giles sent a brief mail. According to a source, the Lodha panel is aware of the entire conversation and will produce the email trail before the apex court on January 19, the day when set of administrators would take over BCCI functioning. DNA has been reporting how BCCI's sacked and ineligible officials have been trying to derail reforms suggested by Justice Lodha Commission, following SC's January 2 interim orders. In one such instance last week, former joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary attempted to create a hurdle when the selection committee had gathered to pick the team for the ODI and the T20I series. After the January 2 verdict, as many as 22 state associations adopted the Lodha panel recommendations. MCA appoints Shirke Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cricket Association's (MCA) managing committee last Friday appointed Shirke as its representative at the BCCI meetings. Cricket: Sacked BCCI secretary advised ECB to call off India tour

Rattled after the Supreme Court removed both BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke, the Board&#39;s senior vice-president Gokaraju Ganga Raju made it clear that his association, Andhra CA, would implement the Lodha reforms with immediate effect.

&quot;There is no confusion as Supreme Court has passed its verdict. As the president of Andhra Cricket Association we would implement Lodha reforms in totality with immediate effect. If it means that we have to go into cooling off period, so be it. Indian cricket should move forward,&quot; Ganga Raju told news agency PTI.

When he was asked why&nbsp;Andhra CA did not adhere to the Lodha reforms earlier, Ganga Raju said: &quot;It was because everyone was together. But now when the verdict is out there is no question of defiance. We have been in BCCI long enough to know how to run administration.

&quot;Andhra has 19 cricket grounds owned by association and a second international stadium is coming up. We would do a good job,&quot; he concluded.

Earlier on Monday, in a blow for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Supreme Court removed Anurag Thakur and Ajay Shirke from the post of BCCI President and Secretary respectively.

The court gave the decision while hearing perjury charges levelled against Thakur by amicus curiae Gopal Subramaniam.

Issuing a contempt notice to Thakur, the top court said that the committee of the administrator will look after the affairs of BCCI. &quot;Senior-most Vice President of BCCI will act as President and Joint Secretary will act as Secretary,&quot; the Supreme Court said.

The apex court also requested senior advocate Fali Nariman and Gopal Subramaniam to assist in nominating persons of impeccable integrity as members of the committee of administrators.

The court further added that all office bearers of BCCI and state associations must give an undertaking to abide by recommendations of Lodha Committee. &quot;All office bearers of BCCI and state associations who refuse to abide by recommendations of Lodha panel shall demit office forthwith,&quot; court said.

On December 15, the top court had observed that prima facie Thakur appeared to have committed matter of perjury in relation to demanding an intervention via a letter from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in order to sidestep the implementation of the Lodha committee recommendations.

The apex court, which was hearing the Lodha panel&#39;s third status report which asked for the removal of the top brass of the BCCI, also asked the Amicus Curiae whether Thakur committed perjury or not in the case.

In reply, the Amicus Curiae revealed that the BCCI chief, in his affidavit submitted to the top court, had said that he sought Shashank Manohar&#39;s opinion as the BCCI chairman, which was denied by the latter saying that it was asked in the ICC meeting.

On October 1, the board had accepted many of the &quot;significant recommendations&quot; of the Lodha Committee, but excluded the important ones which have been a bone of contention between the cricket body and the Lodha Panel.
