The National Basketball Association (NBA) and China may have encountered turbulence in their relations over the years but retired great Yao Ming told Reuters the league is still "first class" in his home country. Yao, the chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, soared to stardom in the United States as the eight-time All-Star for the Houston Rockets, an affable, 7-foot, 6-inch NBA big man who dominated the league before retiring in 2011.

Yao propelled the league's popularity in his home country but relations between China and the NBA have not always been smooth. Chinese broadcasters stopped airing Rockets games in 2019 after general manager Daryl Morey posted a message in support of anti-government protests in Hong Kong and, earlier this year, former NBA player Dwight Howard appeared in a promotional video in which he referred to Taiwan as a country, prompting backlash.

"I have to say, the NBA is in the first class...(because) you know the players being exposed in China for so long," Yao said when asked about the past issues between China and the NBA. "The players, the teams (are) all still very well welcome in China and (we had) a couple of players with (in) China just this past summer."

Yao travelled to New York this week for the first time in nearly four years as part of a roughly 30-person Chinese delegation and met with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver at a time when international participation in the league is at an all-time high.

"Everything looks (like it is) running very, very well (under) his management," he said of Silver, who took the reins in 2014.

Separately, Yao said France's Victor Wembanyama possesses a talent that defies comparison, as the seven-foot, four-inch rookie makes his highly anticipated NBA regular-season debut on Wednesday.

Not since LeBron James 20 years ago has a prospect generated excitement on the level seen for the San Antonio Spurs' first overall pick, who will kick off at home against Texan rivals Dallas Mavericks after a remarkable preseason. "I never see a big guy like, you know, (who) can do such a thing like he does," said Yao, an eight-times NBA All-Star who stands two inches taller than Wembanyama.

"In a scout report where we say 'This guy is - how old he is, you know, his height, his wingspan and his capabilities'... and 'He looks like, let's say, a former somebody', you know. For him, it's like, I don't know who shall I put up... no comparing."

The Hall of Famer was reluctant to offer advice to the Frenchman Wembanyama, who enters the NBA at a time of unprecedented international participation in the league. "He has his own expedition to go (on)," said Yao, who was travelling to New York as part of a some 30-person Chinese delegation this week.

"And my experience probably from 20 years ago, I'm not sure is still fit for today. So I just wish him all good luck."

Damian&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;made a&nbsp;triumphant&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;pre-season&nbsp;debut&nbsp;for the Milwaukee&nbsp;Bucks&nbsp;on Sunday, combining well with&nbsp;Giannis Antetokounmpo in a 108-97 road victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Lillard, a seven-time All-Star guard traded from Portland to the&nbsp;Bucks&nbsp;last month, scored 14 points with three steals, three assists and two rebounds in 22 minutes on the court. The 33-year-old Tokyo Olympic gold medalist sank 3-of-10 shots from the floor, 2-of-7 from 3-point range, and all six of his free throws.

"I felt great. It's always a little bit of rust in the&nbsp;beginning&nbsp;but the game was very simple,"&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;said.

"It was a matter of getting my wind up, just getting into the rhythm. They came out blitzing me in the&nbsp;beginning&nbsp;so it woke me up. It was just good to be back out on the floor."

Greek superstar center Antetokounmpo led the&nbsp;Bucks&nbsp;with 16 points and eight rebounds in just over 15 minutes on the court and blended well with new teammate&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;in the first game pairing of two of the&nbsp;NBA's top five scorers from last season, each netting more than 31 points a game.

"I've been on the floor with them a decent amount over the last two weeks so I feel comfortable," said&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;of working with his new teammates.

"I think my game complements the guys really well so it has been seemless. It hasn't been hard at all. Now it's just a matter of being able to play other teams and getting used to each other and how we're going to operate out there."

<h2>- 'Keep building' -</h2>

The Lakers, playing without superstar LeBron James, were led by 16 points and seven rebounds from Anthony Davis. Lillard&nbsp;was pleased that he was able to play a comfortable and familiar game despite new teammates and limited minutes.

"I made the same plays I always make," he said. "I loosen up the defense. I make the right plays then I find my spots and I get aggressive in moments throughout the game. That's what I did tonight.

"Shorter minutes. First game out here. I felt good. We'll just keep building on that."

It has helped that many of the&nbsp;Bucks' offensive schemes were the same as Milwaukee assistant coach Terry Stotts used when he was the head coach at Portland from 2012-2021 when&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;played for the Trail Blazers.

"A lot of what we do offensively is what I did with him for nine years so it has been pretty simple as far as that adjustment,"&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;said.

Lillard&nbsp;said his goal in the run-up to the&nbsp;Bucks' 2023-24 season opener on October 26 at home against Philadelphia is steady improvement. "Just to keep building,"&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;said. "I think it's just one step at a time, enjoy the process and come in and just keep building and keep building throughout the season. That's all we can control."

Lillard&nbsp;and Antetokounmpo are building a chemistry that Milwaukee fans hope can produce a second&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;crown in four seasons. "It has been very solid,"&nbsp;Lillard&nbsp;said of his bond with the&nbsp;Bucks' big man. "It has been simple. I don't think I have, and I don't think he has either, gone into it overly trying to piece everything together.

"I think our personalities mesh well. Our styles of play mesh well. Everything else has just happened organically in time and we've got to allow that space to happen."

NBA: Damian Lillard wins pre-season debut for Milwaukee Bucks against Los Angeles Lakers

Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, two of the NBA's top scorers, have united into a dynamic duo that make the Milwaukee Bucks a formidable threat for the 2024 NBA title. The Bucks obtained seven-time All-Star guard Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers last month and united him with seven-time All-Star center Antetokounmpo to create a powerful inside-outside combination along the lines of legends Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

"Having a guy like Dame on the team, it's unbelievable," Antetokounmpo said. "Plays at a high level, built from the same cloth, wants to win. He's extremely hungry."

Lillard sees that same hunger in his new teammates. "I'm excited for what's to come," Lillard said.&nbsp;"They want to win equally as bad as I do. I couldn't be more excited. I couldn't be more thankful for this opportunity, to play alongside the best player in the league. It's going to be fun."

Lillard, 33,&nbsp;never reached the NBA Finals in 11 seasons at Portland and wanted out to make that breakthrough. "We've got to focus on the goal to win the championship," Antetokounmpo said. "Dame wants this. He's hungry to win, and he's going to push us. I'm very happy to have him on our team."

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee to the 2021 NBA title, delivering the Bucks' first crown in 50 years. But Milwaukee was ousted by Boston in the second round in 2022 and last year -- after 58 wins to become the Eastern Conference top seed -- crashed out to Miami in the first round. That sparked a revamp that included firing Mike Budenholzer as coach, replacing him with Toronto assistant Adrian Griffin.

The Bucks re-signed forward Khris Middleton and centre Brook Lopez, seen as a signal to Antetokounmpo that the team was serious about staying a title contender. Milwaukee erased any doubt on September 27 by landing Lillard in a three-team deal that saw 14-year NBA guard Jrue Holiday sent to Portland, which four days later traded him to Boston, likely the Bucks' top rival in the East.

Lillard averaged 32.2 points a game last season for Portland, third in the NBA, with Antetokounmpo fifth on 31.1 points a game while pulling down 11.8 rebounds a contest as well. The pick-and-roll partnership should see outside shooting chances for Lillard and inside opportunities for the 28-year-old Greek big man if rivals tighten on Lillard defensively.

"It has been very solid," Lillard said of his bond with the Bucks' big man. "It has been simple. I don't think I have, and I don't think he has either, gone into it overly trying to piece everything together.

"I think our personalities mesh well. Our styles of play mesh well. Everything else has just happened organically in time and we've got to allow that space to happen."

That's with barely four weeks between the trade and Milwaukee's opener on Thursday against visiting Philadelphia."I know we're both willing to be ourselves and let the other guy be himself because I need Dame to be Dame and I think he needs me to be me," Antetokounmpo said.

<h2>'It has been seamless'</h2>

It's more than Antetokounmpo that Lillard has blended within the past month. "I've been on the floor with them a decent amount so I feel comfortable," Lillard said of working with his new teammates.

"I think my game complements the guys really well so it has been seamless. It hasn't been hard at all. Now it's just a matter of being able to play other teams and getting used to each other and how we're going to operate out there. "Lillard called his new club "a boost of energy and focus and excitement."&nbsp;"You make your way around and you start to see the level of the organization," he said. "They won a championship so it's the standard. I've been striving for that."

Damian Lillard, Giannis Antetokounmpo join forces to make Bucks serious threat for NBA title

The defending NBA champion Denver&nbsp;Nuggets&nbsp;crashed to their first defeat of the season in an upset 110-89 loss to the Minnesota&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;on Wednesday, while Boston extended their&nbsp;unbeaten&nbsp;start with a brutal thrashing of Indiana. Denver began the season in imperious form, building to a 4-0 start, but were stopped in their tracks after a dominant performance from the&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;at Minneapolis's Target Center.

Anthony Edwards led the Minnesota scoring with 24 points while Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 21 in a wire-to-wire victory for the&nbsp;Timberwolves, who led by 19 points at half-time. Rudy Gobert delivered a crucial defensive performance with 12 rebounds and two blocks to help shut down Denver's free-scoring offense.

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic led the Denver scorers with 25 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. "It just shows what we're capable of, honestly," Minnesota's Mike Conley said after the win. "We know we can be a great team -- we've got to put it together for four quarters.&nbsp;

"Tonight we beat a really good team and were able to stick with the easy things and let that just bring us home," added Conley, who finished with 17 points. While Denver kissed goodbye to their&nbsp;unbeaten&nbsp;record, there were no such problems for the&nbsp;Celtics, who romped to a 155-104 blowout over the Pacers to improve to 4-0 at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The points total was the second-highest ever in&nbsp;Celtics&nbsp;history, behind the 173 scored in a win over Minneapolis in 1959. Jayson Tatum led Boston with 30 points and 12 rebounds, with Derrick White adding 18 points and Sam Hauser 17 from five three-pointers.

<h2>&nbsp;LeBron snaps streak&nbsp;</h2>

The game was over as a contest well before the finish, allowing&nbsp;Celtics&nbsp;coach Joe Mazzulla to rest his starters for the entirety of the fourth quarter. In other games, LeBron James&nbsp;produced a vintage 35-point performance as the Los Angeles Lakers staged a second-half rally to end their 11-game losing streak to city rivals the Los Angeles Clippers with a 130-125 overtime victory.

The Lakers trailed by 19 points early in the game but roared back in the second half to complete a dramatic win, the team's first over the Clippers since 2020. For long periods James appeared to be locked in a toe-to-toe battle with Clippers veteran Paul George, who scored 20 points in a remarkable fourth quarter to force the contest to overtime.

George, who finished with 35 points, fouled out early in overtime and momentum swung back to the Lakers who closed out the win. James received scoring support from Anthony Davis and D'Angelo Russell with 27 points each, while Austin Reaves added 15. In San Francisco, Klay Thompson drained a jump shot with 0.2 seconds remaining to clinch a thrilling 102-101 win for the Golden State Warriors over the Sacramento Kings.

Thompson's last-gasp bucket settled an engrossing duel between the two northern California teams which saw the lead change hands no fewer than 12 times.

The Warriors improve to 4-1 to move up to second in the Western Conference standings. In Toronto, the Milwaukee Bucks fell to 2-2 for the season after slumping to a 130-111 defeat on the road.

Pascal Siakam scored 26 points in a balanced offensive effort for the Raptors, who saw all five starters finish in double figures. German international Dennis Schroder had 24 points and Scottie Barnes added 21 as Toronto outgunned the Bucks' twin-pronged line-up led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and new signing Damian Lillard.

Antetokounmpo was restricted to 16 points while Lillard finished with 15 as the Raptors cruised to their second win of the season against a Bucks team led by their former assistant coach Adrian Griffin. In Dallas, the Mavericks maintained their perfect start to the season to improve to 4-0 with a 114-105 defeat of the Chicago Bulls.

Grant Williams had 25 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. posted 24 points while Luka Doncic added 18 points with 10 assists as Dallas overturned a five-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to close out victory.

NBA: Denver Nuggets lose their first match of season against Minnesota Timberwolves

There is a huge sigh of relief for LeBron James and his family. LeBron's elder son Bronny James has been granted the medical approval to make a comeback to college basketball activities, four months after suffering a cardiac arrest during practice. Recently, the James family revealed that the 19-year-old Bronny,&nbsp;who was found to have a congenital heart defect, is aiming to stage a return to workouts next week with the University of Southern California (USC).

The James family said in a statement, "Bronny James is now cleared by his doctors for a full return to basketball. Bronny will have a final evaluation with USC staff this week, resume practice next week, and return to games soon after. The James family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible medical team, the entire USC community, and especially the countless friends, family, and fans for their love and support. Fight On!"

French prodigy Victor Wembanyama scored 15 points on his much-anticipated NBA debut on Wednesday but it was not enough to prevent the San Antonio Spurs slipping to a 126-119 defeat to Dallas.&nbsp; This year's top NBA Draft pick, in foul trouble throughout the second half, made 6-of-9 shots from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point range, with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot over 23 minutes in his first NBA contest.

It was Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of Dallas who starred with 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists as the Mavericks scored the last eight points for the victory."It all starts with our defense," Doncic said. "We played good defense for three quarters but especially at the end we locked in."

Wembanyama, the 19-year-old phenomenon considered the top NBA prospect since LeBron James, used his 7-foot-4 (2.24m) frame, surprising quickness and outside shooting touch to display his arsenal of skills in the first game of his rookie campaign. After picking up his fifth foul only 26 seconds into the fourth quarter, Wembanyama went to the bench until only 7:12 remained.

Only 19 seconds later, Wembanyama made an alley-oop dunk shot off a pass from Devin Vassell, then added a 3-pointer, and his dunk with 4:56 to play gave the Spurs a 113-112 lead. A Wembanyama jumper tied it at 115-115 with 3:55 remaining, but the Mavs were too tough for the Spurs down the stretch.

"Wemby" began drawing huge cheers after only 38 seconds, blocking a jump shot by eight-time NBA All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. Attracting global attention since before joining the squad where compatriot Tony Parker became an NBA superstar, Wembanyama grabbed his first rebound off the defensive boards after 59 seconds and his first assist came 12 seconds later off a Zach Collins jumper. Wembanyama opened his NBA scoring account on a 3-pointer with 8:24 remaining in the first quarter for a 13-7 Spurs lead.

Wembanyama picked up his second foul late in the first quarter and went to the bench with the Spurs ahead 40-33 on the way to a 68-64 halftime lead. In the first half, Wembanyama had six points on 2-of-4 shooting, all from 3-point range, with three rebounds, a blocked shot, an assist and a steal over 12 minutes.

In the second half, Wembanyama picked up his third and fourth fouls 39 seconds apart, both offensively, and went to the bench 3:23 into the third quarter. Seconds later, the Mavericks took their first lead at 73-72 and closed the quarter on an 8-0 run for their largest lead to that point at 96-91.

"Fortunately for us he's a very tooled, prioritized young man," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Wembanyama. "I don't have to teach him what is it to be a pro."

<h2>Tatum leads Boston win&nbsp;</h2>

In other NBA openers, Jayson Tatum had 34 points and 11 rebounds while Latvian forward Kristaps Porzingis added 30 points to lead Boston's 108-104 triumph at New York. Porzingis had the most points for any player making his Celtics debut. Sacramento's Harrison Barnes scored 33 points to power Sacramento over host Utah 130-114.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 31 points led Oklahoma City in a 124-104 win at Chicago. Donovan Mitchell's 3-pointer with 12.1 seconds remaining lifted Cleveland to a 114-113 victory at Brooklyn. Mitchell and Max Strus each scored 27 to lead the Cavaliers. Detroit missed four shots in the last 64 seconds and host Miami, led by Bam Adebayo's 22 points and 19 from Jimmy Butler, edged the Pistons 103-102.

C.J. McCollum had 24 points and Zion Williamson added 23 to lead New Orleans over host Memphis 111-104.

NBA: Victor Wembanyama points not enough to defeat Dallas Mavericks

Derrick White put up 28 points as the Boston&nbsp;Celtics&nbsp;beat&nbsp;rivals Miami 119-111 on Friday&nbsp;while&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;Draft top pick Victor&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;starred in his&nbsp;first&nbsp;win&nbsp;for the San Antonio Spurs. Jayson Tatum scored 22 points and Jaylen Brown contributed 27 in a strong all-around display from Boston, with all five starters in double figures as the&nbsp;Celtics&nbsp;won their home opener, a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference championship series.

Miami trailed by just three points with 47.1 seconds left when Jimmy Butler was called for a foul on White, which was unsuccessfully challenged by furious Miami coach Erik Spoelstra. White then drained his two free throws and when Tyler Herro missed a 3-point jumper and Brown sank his from 30-feet out, Miami's resistance was finally over.

Three crucial blocks added to an impressive performance from White, who was delighted with beating a&nbsp;Heat&nbsp;team that secured a place in the&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;Finals with a game-seven triumph at Boston. "Anytime you're on home court, you want to protect the home court and obviously, last time we played them here, they came out winning," White said.

"It's always a big game every time we play against them and we're going to see them down the line a lot of times. So it's always fun." Frenchman&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;turned on the style in San Antonio's 126-122 overtime victory over the Houston Rockets, coming up big in the latter stages of the game as he put up 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds with three blocked shots and two steals. "It's just a victory but it's a day I'll remember,"&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;said.

"I really love winning. This is what I love most in life. Of course it feels great." The Spurs trailed by two with 32.1 seconds remaining when the 19-year-old grabbed a defensive rebound and tied the game on a driving layup with 20 seconds remaining in regulation.&nbsp;Wembanyama's 16-foot jumper put his team ahead in overtime and he grabbed four total rebounds in the additional period.

"I'm proud of what we did tonight,"&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;said. "We can see where we can get better. A&nbsp;win&nbsp;is a&nbsp;win&nbsp;but it shows that we got a lot of way to go as a team." Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was impressed by the youngster's impact in his second&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;start, despite "Wemby" going only 2-of-10 from the floor in the&nbsp;first&nbsp;half.

"He's a competitor of course. He's gonna be decisive and do everything to&nbsp;win. But they're all like that," he said. "We showed some composure and some not so composed. That's work in progress. Good was they were persistent."

<h2>Proud 'Pop' praise&nbsp;</h2>

Wembanyama&nbsp;finished the night with 7-of-19 shooting from the floor, grabbing five offensive and seven defensive rebounds. "Back in the locker room, Pop acknowledged it was my&nbsp;first-ever&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;win, just made me proud of myself,"&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;said. "But it's just one. We have a whole lot games to come."

Wembanyama's three dunks brought the arena fans to their feet but he received plenty of verbal attention from Popovich in the final minute of the game. "Cause I forgot a play. It's a little mistake -- 100% legit for him to yell at me. I apologize." said&nbsp;Wembanyama.

Nikola Jokic scored 22 points and made 12 rebounds and seven assists as the reigning&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;champion Denver Nuggets went to 2-0 with a 108-104 victory over Memphis. The Chicago Bulls also enjoyed an overtime&nbsp;win, beating the Toronto Raptors 104-103 with Demar DeRozan scoring 33 points.

Alex Caruso's 3-point jumper with 2.1 seconds remaining secured the victory for Chicago. Luka Doncic scored 49 points, including a crucial 3-pointer with 26.1 seconds left, as the Dallas Mavericks held off the Brooklyn Nets 125-120

NBA: Derrick White helps Boston Celtics beat Miami Heat, Victor Wembanyama shines in first win for Spurs

Chinese basketball great Yao Ming says that criticism of the men's national team has gone too far after some players were abused online following a series of disappointing results. Basketball is hugely popular in China, but the team has consistently failed to live up to high expectations, with the latest letdown a loss to the Philippines in the semi-finals of the Asian Games on home soil last month.

China beat Taiwan to win bronze but the campaign was regarded as a failure and came weeks after they finished 29th of 32 teams at the World Cup, missing out on next year's Paris Olympics. Fan anger has failed to dissipate, and national players have been targeted online in recent weeks, including Zhang Zhenlin of Liaoning Flying Leopards.

"Here I represent the association to make a statement," Yao, an eight-time NBA All-Star and now president of the Chinese Basketball Association, said Thursday at a Chinese basketball Hall of Fame event in Beijing. "No matter if we play well or badly on the basketball court, we will face up to the result," state media quoted him as saying.

"Some criticism on technique and tactics is welcome, but some things have gone beyond basketball and we don't agree with that. "We will always support our players to defend their rights and interests, and in this regard (online abuse), we will provide all the necessary support."

Following the 77-76 defeat to the Philippines -- who went on to win Asian Games gold in Hangzhou -- fed-up Chinese fans piled in online to berate and mock their team. "Watching you play basketball is a form of pain, isn't it?" one popular meme asked. The 43-year-old Yao had labelled the China players "slackers" and warned there was a "huge gap" between them and the world's best teams.

French&nbsp;phenomenon&nbsp;Victor&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;poured in&nbsp;38&nbsp;points and came up big in the fourth quarter as the San Antonio&nbsp;Spurs&nbsp;held&nbsp;off&nbsp;a late Phoenix rally to beat the&nbsp;Suns&nbsp;132-121 on Thursday. Wembanyama, the number one draft pick playing in his fifth NBA game, notched 20 points in the first half as the&nbsp;Spurs&nbsp;pushed their advantage to as many as 27 on the way to a 75-55 lead at the break.

The towering 19-year-old then showed plenty of poise after the&nbsp;Suns&nbsp;roared back to tie the game at 116-116 on Keita Bates-Diop's three-pointer with 4:21 remaining. The&nbsp;Spurs&nbsp;responded with 12 straight points, 10 of them from&nbsp;Wembanyama, who produced three free-throws, a dunk, a three-pointer and a turnaround jump shot to put San Antonio back in charge.

"Somebody's got to do it,"&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;said of taking responsibility at the crucial moment. "Tomorrow it's going to be one of my teammates." The burst was even more impressive than his highlight-reel dunk in the second quarter and back-to-back three-pointers to end the first half.

In all&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;connected on 15 of 26 shots from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds with two blocked shots to help the&nbsp;Spurs&nbsp;notch their second win in three days over the&nbsp;Suns. On Tuesday San Antonio erased a 20-point third-quarter deficit to stun Phoenix 115-114.

The two games reinforced what&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;said was the biggest NBA lesson he'd learned so far -- that "maybe a 20-point lead is nothing." On Thursday the&nbsp;Spurs&nbsp;never trailed, although it looked like the&nbsp;Suns&nbsp;might turn the tables as Devin Booker scored 21 of his 31 points in the second half and Kevin Durant scored 15 of his 28 after the break in a furious rally bid.

Booker, back from an ankle injury, added 13 rebounds and nine assists, but the&nbsp;Suns, hindered by 14 turnovers, never gained the lead. "Of course there was the threat of Durant and Booker, that was our major concern playing the&nbsp;Suns, especially in the fourth quarter,"&nbsp;Wembanyama&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

"It worked really well in the first quarter -- the energy we brought -- so we really tried to find this again, to lock in, know our rotations, our tactics." Durant, the former NBA Most Valuable Player and an idol of&nbsp;Wembanyama's, said he didn't think the French youngster's game was too heavily influenced by his own. "I'm sure he said he watched me growing up, but he's his own player," Durant said. "He's going to create his own lane much different than anybody who's ever played."

<h2>&nbsp;Sixers top Raptors&nbsp;</h2>

Elsewhere, Joel Embiid scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Philadelphia to a 114-99 victory over the Toronto Raptors in the 76ers' first game since trading James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Tobias Harris added 23 points apiece and Tyrese Maxey had 18 for the 76ers, who notched a third straight victory and improved to 3-1 in a young season that had so far been overshadowed by&nbsp;Harden's trade demand.

Maxey insisted that Harden's professionalism meant there were no distractions for a team adjusting to new coach Nick Nurse. "Everybody was really focused on trying to get better," Maxey said of pre-season preparations. "This is coach Nurse's first year, so we were trying to learn schemes, learn how he thinks... there wasn't much of a distraction at all."

Nurse said before the game that from a competitive standpoint Harden's trade to the Clippers "would have been better a month ago." Of the new arrivals in the deal -- Nicolas Batum, Robert Covington, KJ Martin and Marcus Morris -- only Covington and Martin entered the game, in the final minutes.

French phenomenon Victor Wembanyama poured in 38 points and came up big in the fourth quarter as the San Antonio Spurs held off a late Phoenix rally to beat the Suns 132-121 on Thursday. Wembanyama, the number one draft pick playing in his fifth NBA game, notched 20 points in the first half as the Spurs pushed their advantage to as many as 27 on the way to a 75-55 lead at the break. The towering 19-year-old then showed plenty of poise after the Suns roared back to tie the game at 116-116 on Keita Bates-Diop's three-pointer with 4:21 remaining. The Spurs responded with 12 straight points, 10 of them from Wembanyama, who produced three free-throws, a dunk, a three-pointer and a turnaround jump shot to put San Antonio back in charge. "Somebody's got to do it," Wembanyama said of taking responsibility at the crucial moment. "Tomorrow it's going to be one of my teammates." The burst was even more impressive than his highlight-reel dunk in the second quarter and back-to-back three-pointers to end the first half. In all Wembanyama connected on 15 of 26 shots from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds with two blocked shots to help the Spurs notch their second win in three days over the Suns. On Tuesday San Antonio erased a 20-point third-quarter deficit to stun Phoenix 115-114. The two games reinforced what Wembanyama said was the biggest NBA lesson he'd learned so far -- that "maybe a 20-point lead is nothing." On Thursday the Spurs never trailed, although it looked like the Suns might turn the tables as Devin Booker scored 21 of his 31 points in the second half and Kevin Durant scored 15 of his 28 after the break in a furious rally bid. Also Read: NBA: Mark Cuban sells majority stake of Dallas Mavericks to Casino tycoon Miriam Adelson Booker, back from an ankle injury, added 13 rebounds and nine assists, but the Suns, hindered by 14 turnovers, never gained the lead. "Of course there was the threat of Durant and Booker, that was our major concern playing the Suns, especially in the fourth quarter," Wembanyama said. "It worked really well in the first quarter -- the energy we brought -- so we really tried to find this again, to lock in, know our rotations, our tactics." Durant, the former NBA Most Valuable Player and an idol of Wembanyama's, said he didn't think the French youngster's game was too heavily influenced by his own. "I'm sure he said he watched me growing up, but he's his own player," Durant said. "He's going to create his own lane much different than anybody who's ever played." Sixers top Raptors Elsewhere, Joel Embiid scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Philadelphia to a 114-99 victory over the Toronto Raptors in the 76ers' first game since trading James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Tobias Harris added 23 points apiece and Tyrese Maxey had 18 for the 76ers, who notched a third straight victory and improved to 3-1 in a young season that had so far been overshadowed by Harden's trade demand. Maxey insisted that Harden's professionalism meant there were no distractions for a team adjusting to new coach Nick Nurse. "Everybody was really focused on trying to get better," Maxey said of pre-season preparations. "This is coach Nurse's first year, so we were trying to learn schemes, learn how he thinks... there wasn't much of a distraction at all." Nurse said before the game that from a competitive standpoint Harden's trade to the Clippers "would have been better a month ago." Of the new arrivals in the deal -- Nicolas Batum, Robert Covington, KJ Martin and Marcus Morris -- only Covington and Martin entered the game, in the final minutes. Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Embiid made just eight of 22 shots from the floor but connected on 12 of 13 from the free-throw line and handed out seven assists. Oubre started in place of PJ Tucker -- who was part of the Harden trade -- and connected on five of six three-point attempts. In New Orlans, CJ McCollum scored 33 points to lead the Pelicans to a 125-116 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Nikola Jokic delivered a dominant triple-double performance as the Denver Nuggets launched the defense of their NBA championship crown with a season-opening 119-107 victory over LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

On a night which saw Nuggets players receive their championship rings as the team raised its first banner in franchise history, Denver tipped off the 2023-2024 season with a display which suggested they will once again be one of the teams to beat. "I think the whole ceremony gave us a boost," Jokic said after the win. "We didn't want anything to ruin our night.&nbsp; "The first half was amazing for us but then we kind of slowed down... But then at the end of the game we were really good and we won the game."

The clash at the Ball Arena was a rematch of last year's Western Conference finals, which Denver swept 4-0 to reach the NBA Finals where they emerged victorious against the Miami Heat. Denver threatened to steamroll the Lakers early on, surging into an 18-point lead at the start of the second quarter as the Lakers struggled to contain two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic and Jamal Murray.

The Lakers, who strengthened their roster during the offseason with the additions of Taurean Prince, Gabe Vincent and Christian Wood amongst others, fought back during the second half to close the gap to just three points at 92-89 in the fourth quarter.

But Denver once again demonstrated their championship pedigree, pulling away whenever the Lakers appeared to be within striking distance to close out an impressive victory.

Jokic believes the Nuggets have what it takes to challenge for back-to-back titles. "We have the opportunity," he told the TNT television network. "You never know what the season's gonna bring. But our offense was good and our defense was good.&nbsp; "If we play like this tonight, I think we have a chance. Why not?"

Jokic finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists -- his 106th career triple -- as Denver showcased their formidable all-round offensive power once more.

"We didn't want anything to ruin our night. "The first half was amazing for us but then we kind of slowed down... But then at the end of the game we were really good and we won the game." The clash at the Ball Arena was a rematch of last year's Western Conference finals, which Denver swept 4-0 to reach the NBA Finals where they emerged victorious against the Miami Heat. "We have the opportunity," he told the TNT television network. "You never know what the season's gonna bring. But our offense was good and our defense was good. "If we play like this tonight, I think we have a chance. Why not?" Jokic finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists -- his 106th career triple -- as Denver showcased their formidable all-round offensive power once more. All five Denver starters finished with double-digit point tallies. Murray posted 21 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 20, while Aaron Gordon knocked down 15 and Michael Porter Jr. 12. LeBron James's teenage son Bronny's cardiac arrest last month was likely caused by a congenital heart defect, the family said in a statement on Friday. Bronny James, 18, collapsed on court while training with his University of Southern California basketball teammates Los Angeles. He was rushed to hospital but was discharged a few days later.

"After a comprehensive initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center... the probable cause of Mr. James' sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) has been identified.

"It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated," said the statement. "We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy," the statement concluded.

Bronny James committed to playing for the USC Trojans in May after becoming one of the top prospects in US high school basketball.

He crowned an outstanding senior year campaign at the exclusive Sierra Canyon school in Los Angeles with 15 points in an all-star game of top college candidates, sinking five 3-pointers.

His famous father -- the NBA's all-time leading scorer as well as a four-time NBA champion and four-time NBA Most Valuable Player -- has long spoken of his desire to extend his career in order to play in the league with his son.

The statement comes days after LeBron and Bronny James accompanied rapper Drake to the stage during a concert at the Crypto.com Arena -- the same venue where the Lakers play -- then watched the show from VIP seats.

Argentina's men's basketball team spurned their last chance to reach the Paris 2024 Olympics after losing 82-75 to the Bahamas in the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying final, marking the first time they have failed to reach the Games in more than two decades. In February, Argentina were left out of the FIBA World Cup for the first time in 41 years after losing to the Dominican Republic in their final Americas qualifier.

Like the rest of the continent's teams missing the World Cup, Argentine hopes had hinged on winning the Olympic pre-qualifier that awards a berth to the champions in the pre-Olympic playoff with teams from other continents. "It was a final and the team played it as such. I think that everything we had prepared and talked about we executed 95 percent," coach Pablo Prigioni said in a press conference. "We were there, we competed at a very high level, taking into account that in the other team there are three players of a superlative level."

The Bahamas had a trio of NBA players - Deandre Ayton (Phoenix Suns center), Eric Gordon (Phoenix Suns shooting guard) and Buddy Hield (Indiana Pacers small forward), to whom Prigioni attributed much of their success. "Our reality is this - we have no players in the NBA but we have good players in Europe and we have to focus on that, on that transformation, on the growth of the young players, focusing on their improvement. "It was a great experience for many of our youngsters, I think the team competed as it should have. It was not enough for us to win, but I think they gave an example of how the group wants to become a great team," Prigioni added.

Basketball: Argentina men's basketball team miss out on Paris Olympics berth

Greece's hopes of landing basketball's World Cup took a major blow on Friday when their star player Giannis Antetokounmpo announced he will miss the tournament.&nbsp;

Antetokounmpo underwent knee surgery at the beginning of July and has been absent from Greece's preparations for the tournament.

"Since the conclusion of my NBA season I have been pushing my body to the limits to be the player I need to be to help our team achieve the goals we set," the 28-year-old Milwaukee Bucks star wrote on social media.&nbsp;

"After months of work and multiple meetings with medical staff it is clear that I am not ready to compete in the level that I need to be to participate in the World Cup.

"This was not a choice but my only option in ensuring I get back to the level of basketball I have worked so hard to achieve so far in my career.

"I am extremely disappointed in this outcome."

The seven-foot tall (2.13m) small forward began his career with Filathlitikos before a dream move to the NBA with the Bucks in 2013.

In his social media post, Antetokounmpo underlined his commitment to the Greek team and cast forward to next year's Paris Olympics.

"Everyone knows my passion and love for my national team has and never will change," he said.&nbsp;

"My personal, and our ultimate team goal is to qualify for the 2024 Olympics Games and it will be an honor to represent my national team next year."

Without their star player, Greece lost their last two warm-up games against Serbia (64-71) and Italy (70-74) as part of the Acropolis Tournament.&nbsp;

The World Cup will be played in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, starting on August 25.&nbsp;

Greece, led by Dimitris Itoudis, begin their campaign against Jordan a day later in Group C which also contains the USA and New Zealand.&nbsp;

Antetokounmpo underwent knee surgery at the beginning of July and has been absent from Greece's preparations for the tournament. "Since the conclusion of my NBA season I have been pushing my body to the limits to be the player I need to be to help our team achieve the goals we set," the 28-year-old Milwaukee Bucks star wrote on social media. "After months of work and multiple meetings with medical staff it is clear that I am not ready to compete in the level that I need to be to participate in the World Cup. "This was not a choice but my only option in ensuring I get back to the level of basketball I have worked so hard to achieve so far in my career. "I am extremely disappointed in this outcome." LeBron James thanks fans for love, wishes as son Bronny released from hospital after cardiac arrest

Bronny James, son of LeBron James, suffered a shocking cardiac arrest on Monday (July 24). The development spread like wildfire and sent shockwaves to the entire sporting fraternity. The incident took place when Bronny was engaged in basketball practice with his team at the University of Southern California. On Tuesday (July 25), it was revealed that LeBron's son was in stable condition and will undergo more tests in the upcoming days to determine the cause before he can be discharged. However,&nbsp;no further update has been shared by his family.

After the frightening episode, Bronny's 16-year-old brother, Bryce, shared a photo of the two on his Instagram story, with a heart emoticon.&nbsp;It is to be noted that even Bryce James is a top basketball prospect, having already received Division I scholarship offers. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Bronny is gearing up for a successful career in the sport which has been further popularised by his father LeBron. In the past, LeBron has often claimed that he hopes to play in the NBA along with Bronny for at least&nbsp;one year before he steps aside.

Bronny cannot join the league until the fall of 2024 at the earliest. Thus, the 38-year-old&nbsp;LeBron would be entering his 22nd NBA season at that point -- which will bring him at par with Vince Carter for the longest career in league history. LeBron will be eager to stretch his career further to play with his son.&nbsp;"My last year will be played with my son. Wherever Bronny is at, that's where I'll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year,"&nbsp;James had stated.

For Bronny, it remains to be seen how quickly he recovers from this horrific episode and whether it impacts his playing career in any way. For now, his recovery is important as it will take him some time to return to court.&nbsp;

NBA: No further update from LeBron and family on son Bronny James' health after cardiac arrest

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kyle Anderson attained Chinese citizenship through naturalisation on Monday (July 24).&nbsp;As per reports in the Chinese media, the basketball player's maternal grandmother was born in Jamaica to a Chinese father and a Jamaican mother. The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) confirmed the development. With this, the 29-year-old forward&nbsp;has become the latest elite athlete to acquire Chinese nationality through naturalisation. He is now the&nbsp;first-ever basketball player&nbsp;to do so.

The CBA said via a post on its official Weibo account, "[Anderson] obtained Chinese nationality this morning and met Yao Ming, chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association."&nbsp;With the new citizenship, Anderson is now eligible to represent China at the&nbsp;FIBA World Cup -- which gets underway on August&nbsp;25 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia -- and also&nbsp;at the Olympic Games, which will&nbsp;take place in Paris next year.

It is to be noted that FIBA has given the green signal to teams to have one naturalised player on their roster.

While China announced an 18-man squad for the World Cup, FIBA had made it clear that the final rosters will be confirmed post a technical meeting ahead of&nbsp;the tournament. Thus, it will be interesting to see if Anderson will make the cut in the Chinese squad and further strengthen their line-up.

Apart from Anderson, there have been several athletes who were naturalised, including many Brazilians who moved to China in order to fulfil their dreams of playing international football. Former Arsenal and Brentford midfielder Nico Yennaris, who was born in England, was the first overseas-born player to become a part of China's national soccer team in 2019.

It will be interesting to see if 29-year-old Anderson joins the Chinese squad ahead of the World Cup and how the striker adapts to a new team environment.

The FIBA World Cup will kick off on August 25 and conclude on September 10.

Basketball: NBA legend LeBron James confirms plans to continue for next season with no intention of retirement

NBA team owners approved rule changes on Tuesday creating an in-game flopping penalty and expanded coach's video replay challenge starting next season, the league announced. The NBA's Competition Committee -– which includes players, coaches, referees, club owners, team executives and representatives from the National Basketball Players Association -- unanimously recommended both changes to the full board of team owners.

The new flopping rule, adopted on a one-season trial basis, says that when a game official calls a player for a flop -- a motion deliberately trying to entice a referee foul call on another player -- an offending player will be issued a technical foul and the opposing team will be awarded one free throw attempt.

A player will not be ejected from a game based on flopping violations.&nbsp;Referees will not be required to stop play to call a flopping violation, allowing teams with an offensive opportunity to keep going until the game's next natural stoppage.

Referees can call both a foul and a flopping violation on the same play. While flopping violations are not reviewable under a coach's challenge, they can be called during a referee's replay review triggered by a coach's challenge or a referee-initiated replay review of certain types of called fouls. The NBA will continue to look at flopping after games, with fines modified to match technical fouls, starting at $2,000 and increasing for repeat offenders.

The coach's challenge change gives teams a second challenge if their first challenge is successful. Teams must continue to use a timeout to trigger a challenge. They would not be able to challenge without a timeout available. Teams can continue to keep the timeout after a first challenge if successful but will not retain the timeout used for a second challenge whether or not it is successful.

NBA team owners approved rule changes on Tuesday creating an in-game flopping penalty and expanded coach's video replay challenge starting next season, the league announced.

Also Read: NBA: Wembanyama all but done in Summer League after game against Trail Blazers A player will not be ejected from a game based on flopping violations. Referees will not be required to stop play to call a flopping violation, allowing teams with an offensive opportunity to keep going until the game's next natural stoppage. NBA: Team owners approve adoption of flopping penalty, coach's challenge to be expanded from next season

Naz Reid and Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed on a new deal. Under the new contract, Reid will be paid $42 million in a three-year deal with a player option. The developments were reported by ESPN, citing Reid's agents Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, on Sunday.

Reid now has a chance to get another contract in the next two years, thanks to a player option for the 2025-26 season. Had it not been for the new deal, Reid would have hit the upcoming free agency as a great prospect after his best season in the NBA.

Reid averaged 11.5 points per game alongside 4.9 rebounds before a wrist fracture ended his season. The Timberwolves certainly missed Reid's presence during the regular season after he was injured as well as in the play-in tournament and the Western Conference playoffs. The Wolves lost to the eventual champions Denver Nuggets in the opening round of the conference playoffs.

Reid, in fact, was behind only 2022 NBA MVP Joel Embiid in scoring the most points in the league after the All-Star break in February. Reid scored 242 points in 312 minutes of playtime as per ESPN's research.&nbsp;

Reid had arrived in Minnesota in 2019 as an undrafted player from LSU and gradually rose in ranks and became an indispensable part of the franchise behind Karl Anthony-Towns and Rudy Gobert.

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is expected to miss out the entire upcoming 2023-24 NBA season, Bulls' executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas said after the latest NBA Draft. Ball is still recovering from a knee injury which he had in January 2022 and have had three surgeries for the same.

“Going into the offseason, I think our expectation is that he's not coming back next season and he's going to continue on his recovery," said in a press conference on Thursday after the 2023 NBA Draft. "If he comes back, it would be great,” added Karnišovas.

NBA: Naz Reid, Timberwolves agree on three-year $42 million deal

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is expected to miss out the entire upcoming 2023-24 NBA season, informed Bulls' executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas. Ball is still recovering from a knee injury which he had in January 2022 and have had three surgeries for the same.

In his latest surgery in March, Ball went in for cartilage transplant - his third procedure in 14 months on the same knee. Karnišovas, although said that he's 'recovering nicely' but 'doesn't think he'll be back next season.'

Ball, who last played on January 14, 2022, suffered a meniscus tear in left-knee during the game against the Golden State Warriors. He had undergone arthroscopic surgery in January 2022 itself and was expected to return in 6-8 weeks but felt discomfort during the rehab. The guard didn't play in rest of the 2021-22 season.

Ahead of the 2022-23 season's start, Ball went under the knife once more in September for arthroscopic debridement in the same knee. The Bulls, however, took decision to not make him return to the court ever in the season as Ball couldn't play without pain.

Ball, who made his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers after being No.2 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans before 2019-20 season. The guard was then traded to the Bulls ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Karnišovas, meanwhile, is confident that Ball will make a return at some point in future. "Eventually you are going to see him on the basketball court," Karnišovas said on Thursday.

Motor racing: Basketball great LeBron James to flag away centenary Le Mans 24 Hours race

Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon denied making derogatory remarks about two-time All-Star Dearica Hamby's pregnancy, telling reporters on Wednesday that the decision to trade her to the Los Angeles Sparks was purely a business one.

The WNBA suspended Hammon for two games on Tuesday, saying she had violated "Respect in the Workplace" policies. The violation "was related to comments made by Hammon to Hamby in connection with Hamby’s recent pregnancy", the league said in a statement.

The league also docked the Aces their 2025 first-round pick for offering "impermissible benefits" related to Hamby's contract extension negotiations.

Hamby, who gave birth to her second child in March, initiated a complaint with the league on Jan. 21, the same day she said on social media that she fought to stay with the defending champions "up until the disgusting comments that were made to me".

Hammon told reporters that while she did ask about Hamby's pregnancy, she never made derogatory remarks and that their relationship was amicable until she informed the former first-round draft pick that she would be traded.

"I handled Dearica with care from day one, when she told me. And she knows that," said Hammon. "Once I make the phone call that the decision has been made to move her, that's when everything kind of fell apart."&nbsp;

A representative for Hamby did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The situation has placed an unwelcome spotlight on the Aces, who are expected to be among the most dominant teams in the league with twice-MVP Candace Parker and two-time champion Alysha Clark joining the reigning Most Valuable Player A'ja Wilson in the off-season.

Hammon, a former six-time WNBA All-Star, is among the highest-profile figures in the coaching ranks. She took the reins in early 2022 after eight years as an assistant coach with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs.

"I'll take my little lump on the chin and keep it moving," said Hammon. "Everybody's kind of disappointed in the situation, but, at the end of the day, we know who we are, and so we go to sleep every night in that truth."
