Currently the country has been struck by a devastating Covid crisis, similar to what India saw in April. In fact the famous tourist destination of Bali is running out of oxygen as cases surge.

A navy release said, "India and Indonesia enjoy close cultural and commercial ties. Both countries have been working together in the maritime domain towards a safer Indo-Pacific."

The naval ship Airavat whose primary role is to carry out amphibious operations had been deployed for relief operations across the Indian Ocean Region in the past as well. Both Indian and Indonesian navies have been carrying out bilateral exercises and coordinated patrols regularly.

Remember, both Bangladesh and Indonesia had reached out to India when it was stuck by Covid crisis. Bangladesh sent Remdisivir Injection, medicines and protective equipment. A large quantity of Remdisivir was used in Northeastern states of India bordering Bangladesh.

Indonesia had sent India oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders. All in all, India got relief from 52 countries which included various items from foreign governments, private companies, Indian associations abroad among other sources. Last year, New Delhi had sent HCQ to many countries and this year 95 countries got India-made vaccines. The vaccine export initative, called Vaccine Maitri initiative is currently on pause as India focuses on its domestic vaccination programme.

Bangladesh's Mushfiqur Rahim will miss next month's Twenty20 International series against Australia after he was unable to join the team in time for quarantine because of personal reasons.

Bangladesh are undergoing a 10-day quarantine in Dhaka ahead of the five-match series, due to be held August 3 to 9.

However, Cricket Australia said on Thursday, the series has come under doubt after their second one-day international against West Indies was suspended minutes before the start following a COVID-19 case among the West Indies staff.

Bangladesh Cricket Board's cricket operations chairman Akram Khan said Mushfiqur opted out of their ongoing series in Zimbabwe to be with his parents.

"Mushfiqur wanted to play the (Australia) series but he missed the quarantine by a couple of days," ESPNcricinfo news site quoted Akram as saying.

"His parents are sick, so he had to leave the Zimbabwe tour. But the (10-day) quarantine is part of our agreement with Cricket Australia, so we couldn't include him.

"They didn't agree to Mushfiqur entering quarantine two days after it began. It is disappointing but one can't do much about these things."

In a first, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will establish a ‘Bangabandhu Chair’ at the Delhi University to further ties between India and Bangladesh. It is a homage to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Sheikh Mujibur is called father of modern Bangladesh. He always strove for independent Bangladesh and is fondly called 'Bangabandhu' or Friend of Bengal.

Dinesh Patnaik, Director-General of ICCR and Prof PC Joshi, Acting Chancellor of University of Delhi will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday in this regard. A visiting professor or a subject expert on Bangladesh, likely to be a person of Bangladeshi origin will be occupying the "chair".

Key focus will be on the shared cultural heritage of India and Bangladesh with subjects like Anthropology, Buddhist Studies, Geography, History, Music and Fine Arts, Political Science etc.

A release from ICCR said, "As Bangladesh records consistent economic growth and has rapidly raised its socio-economic standards, there could not be a more appropriate time for Indian academia and contributors to policy-making to pay more attention to Bangladesh Studies in an institutional manner. This Chair is an important step in this direction."

The establishment of the chair was a decision taken during PM Modi's visit to Bangladesh in March 2021. The development comes even as both countries have seen increased engagement at every level especially political, with a key focus on connectivity.

"Bangabandhu Chair focuses on a better understanding of developments in Bangladesh, one of India's most important neighbors, positioned at the strategic intersection of our "Neighborhood First "and "Act East" policies", the release said.

The chair will not only teach but also help in mentoring research students and take part in other activities in the university like seminars, public lectures. The initiative, all in all, will help in increasing cultural exchanges between the 2 countries. The development coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Bangladesh Liberation War and Indo-Bangladesh diplomatic relations.

The Directorate of Health Services (DGHS) said that the death rate now stands at 1.60 per cent and infection rate at 31.32 per cent with overnight detection of another 11,162 cases.

DGHS spokesman Nazmul Islam said the situation prompted them to turn some existing health facilities into COVID-19 dedicated centres.

"The fatality and infection rates are on the rise, the situation is alarming as we are yet to see the peak of the pandemic," he told PTI.

He said that breaking the infection chain was the only solution. Stricter enforcement of the (ongoing nationwide) shutdown is now the only option to flatten the rate.

Doctors said that a surge of patients continued to rise in hospitals and half of them were reporting with critical conditions.

"The patients are dying despite our maximum efforts," a doctor at a Dhaka hospital earlier said.

The DGHS data shows that southwestern Khulna remained the coronavirus hotspot in terms of deaths and cases among the 64 administrative districts, followed by Dhaka. There have been reports of empty oxygen cylinders piling up in the city of Khulna, which has now become Bangladesh's coronavirus hotspot amid a surge.

The government has ordered a strict week-long nationwide lockdown in a bid to halt the spread of Covid-19, but Khulna's hospitals cannot cope.

On Thursday, Khulna city recorded 46 virus deaths, while in earlier waves the daily death toll never went into double figures.
Most people say the real toll is much higher. Also, as per the reports, graveyards cannot cope with the number of dead in nearby cities such as Satkhira.

The main state-run Khulna general hospital is one of four in the city treating coronavirus patients and has 400 beds and is unable to cope up with the patient surge.

Niaz Muhammad, the chief government doctor for the Khulna region, said, "We have been dealing with enormous admission pressure in hospitals. He further denied an oxygen shortage.

Amid the lockdown, police, and troops have patrolled the streets across Bangladesh. Hundreds of people have been arrested each day for leaving their homes. In Khulna, restrictions on movement have been in place since last month, as the infection rate has soared.

However, the city's factories are still open and many people say they are forced to go out to work.

Bangladesh has recorded just over 935,000 cases and 14,900 deaths in the past 15 months. As per the citizens, the figures are drastically under-reported.

As a part of the lockdown, all offices and transportation are shut during this period while factories, including the country's prime garment export sector, will be allowed to remain open if they follow health protocols, the government said.

A police officer at one checkpoint said only essential goods carriers and ambulances were being permitted to move on the streets.

Bangladesh: Seven dead, 50 hurt in powerful blast

Thousands of people were stranded in Bangladesh's capital on Monday as authorities halted almost all public transport ahead of a sweeping lockdown imposed to combat a deadly resurgence of Covid-19 infections.

The country reported 119 deaths on Sunday, its highest-ever daily death toll from the pandemic, while new infections have been averaging around 5,000 for the past few days.

Officials blame the recent spike in cases on the highly contagious coronavirus Delta variant first identified in neighbouring India.

The majority of the South Asian nation's 168 million population will be confined to their homes by Thursday as part of the restrictions, with only essential services and some export-facing factories allowed to operate.

The lockdown announcement sparked an exodus of migrant workers from the capital Dhaka to home villages on Sunday, with tens of thousands of people cramming into ferries to cross a major river.

The staggered implementation of the lockdown rules left thousands of workers in Dhaka forced to walk to their offices on Monday, sometimes for hours, in the sweltering summer heat.

Large columns of people were seen walking on the main roads early Monday. Workplaces will be shut from Wednesday.

Bicycle rickshaws were allowed to operate in a last minute government concession late Sunday, but prices had soared to unaffordable levels, commuters said.

Massive crowds in Dhaka have flocked to ferry terminals to try and get out of the city before a strict national lockdown comes into force. Starting from Monday, no one in Bangladesh will be allowed to leave their homes unless in an emergency. This comes in as cases in the country surge. Many of these cases are linked to the Delta variant first identified in neighbouring India. In its latest move, the government has decided to close government and private offices and ordered citizens to stay home. The government had earlier put at least seven districts under lockdown including Manikganj, Gazipur and Gopalganj amid a rise in coronavirus cases.
