At least two people were killed and 11 others were injured after an elevated road in Bangkok collapsed on Monday (July 10), the news agency Associated Press reported on Tuesday citing authorities in Thailand's capital city. The elevated road had been under construction since 2020. The report said that authorities had launched an investigation to find out the reason for the collapse. Addressing a press conference, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipan said that the debris at the accident site was being removed after authorities confirmed that no one else was trapped. Sittipan added that it could take several days for the rubble to be cleared. Inspecting the site, the governor further said the accident should not have happened. “Someone needs to be responsible for this because someone died...this wasn’t something unpreventable,” he added. As per the Office of the Official Information Commission, the construction project (of the elevated road) was commissioned by authorities to Construction and Npa Construction. Further details are awaited. In May, a construction worker was killed and, five others were injured after a floor in a riverside condominium building in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district collapsed, a report by Thai PBS World said. And in February, three workers were killed when a scaffold collapsed at a construction site of a hotel in the Khlong Toei district, the Italian Thai Development (ITD), which is responsible for the project, said. Koh Samui, a popular tourist destination located off the east coast of Thailand is facing an acute water shortage. Located in the Chumphon archipelago, authorities are working overtime to ensure that the island, famous for its white sandy beaches, scenic temples and luxury resorts - does not become a 'disaster zone'.

Lack of rain and a large influx of tourists are being dubbed as the primary reasons for the precarious situation. Sutham Samthong, a deputy mayor of Koh Samui has urged the public to use supplies sparingly to get through the difficult period.

“I would like to ask people to save water, use it sparingly. If we help each other, we can go through this,” said Samthong.

“We are not complacent. We are trying to solve the situation. We don’t want the provincial or upper [administration] to announce that Koh Samui is a disaster zone,” he added.

There has been a drastic reduction in the water levels of the Phru Na Muang and Phru Krajud reservoirs and the Hin Lard waterfall, which has contributed to the current predicament. If the water supplies are not sorted quickly, the island only has enough local freshwater supplies for residents for just 30 days.

Currently, the locals are being forced to shell out as much as 250 to 300 baht ($7-$8.5) for about 2,000 litres of water for daily use.

Samthong states that the island needs 30,000 cubic metres of water a day. The authorities are working to bring 24,000 cubic metres through an underwater pipeline from Surat Thani on the mainland, while reservoir supplies would be used for the remaining amount. An additional 30,000 cubic metres is also expected to be brought in the boost the supplies, according to Provincial Waterworks Authority.

Popular Thai island Koh Samui facing existential crisis as water runs out

There is a #AirEmergency in the Thai capital Bangkok. @SaroyaHem tells you about one of the world's most popular tourist destinations which has been blanketed for days by toxic fumes.

Bangkok is choking on air pollution

Has Bangkok become 'China Town'?. Reports say, a number of Chinese tourists are running illegal shops in Bangkok. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Has Bangkok become 'China Town'?

Thailand has been reeling under extreme air pollution leading the government to urge residents to stay safe and indoors. Thai's capital Bangkok has become the sixth most polluted city in the world.

Hazy sky clouds Bangkok as Thai capital chokes on air pollution

Bangkok is grappling with significantly high air pollution. The particulate matter has skyrocketed in the air, doubling the number of patients with pollution-related health problems within a week. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Bangkok urges residents to work from home

Bangkok residents have been asked to work from home and wear face masks owing to the dangerous levels of air pollution in the city. Officials advised commuters to utilise public transportation instead of private vehicles and said that they would work to reduce sources of pollution such as open burning and construction projects. Authorities in Bangkok said that face masks would be distributed to those who were at risk.

The pollution was expected to worsen on Thursday (January 26), according to the governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, but schools did not have to be closed.

“I would like to ask people to be prepared by checking the pollution level before planning a trip. The BMA (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration) and pollution department will control the sources of the dust and ask for cooperation from activities that generate dust such as construction sites or truck transportation,” he said.

Transport limitations would be taken into account if the condition gets worse, he added.

In Thailand, especially in the north-west region, agricultural burning and forest fires are major contributors to air pollution between the months of December and April. Bangkok, which already has poor air quality owing to its manufacturing, construction, and traffic, is worsened by the pollution from these human-induced fires.

PM2.5 levels rose to 63.2 g/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre) on Thursday (January 26) morning, well exceeding the WHO yearly air quality guideline of 5 g/m3. Thailand's worst-ranked regions were in Samut Songkhram, southwest of Bangkok, and Lampang, north of the capital, according to the Swiss air quality business IQAir.

The health ministry's permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, who spoke to the Guardian, stated that the situation would be monitored by all provincial public health services, and that emergency centres would be opened in any provinces that had experienced high levels of pollution for more than three days in a row.

Contrary to popular belief, snakes are a far bigger concern in Bangkok. Just ask the 199 emergency hotline operator that receives a call for assistance every 15 minutes on average, and 60,000 snakes are removed annually.

The data was made public in reaction to a Bangkok resident's online posting of a picture of a sizable boa constrictor (non-venomous species of snake) hanging from a tree in the Din Daeng district, which sparked an outpouring of support from residents of the area and beyond.

Around 200 calls are made each day in Bangkok, according to rescuers at the emergency hotline asking for help with pests, including snakes, water monitors, and wasps. The operators say that nearly half of the calls are about snakes, reported Bangkok Post.

“On average, a report is made every 15 minutes throughout every 24-hour period,” said an operator.

There hasn't been a formal census of the snake population in Bangkok, according to Alongkorn Mahanop, a consultant for the Zoological Park Organization, thus no precise figures are available. He calculated that each district of the city likely has close to a thousand snakes, making encounters very likely.

The Petchkasem Krungthep Foundation, which helped Chen in completing the last rites of his wife, said that his house was like a ‘storage facility’ with running water but no electricity. They also said that the woman’s body was found in a ‘dry condition’ inside the well-maintained coffin in the house.

After the cremation, the last remains were kept in an urn which Chen said that he will keep with himself till he dies. The foundation is taking care of Chen right now with volunteers giving him food and drink to the 72-year-old after helping him with the cremation of his late wife.

A former employee at Australia’s embassy in Bangkok was indicted over claims that placed multiple spy cameras were in women’s bathrooms at the building, local media reported.

The Royal Thai Police had last month arrested Bank Thamsongsana, an Australian and Thai dual national, who worked as an IT worker at the mission.

He was sacked on January 6, a day after he was arrested. Thamsongsana can face up to10 years in prison if found guilty of sexual and public nuisance offences, The Sunday Morning Herald newspaper reported.

According to reports, a probe had begun last year by the embassy and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra after women employees found a tiny memory card in the bathrooms on the ground floor building.

Following the discovery, over 60 women lodged complaints with Royal Thai Police over concerns that they may have been recorded.

Staff were told the card was empty and no cameras were found installed, but an investigation of other devices turned up vision taken inside one of the bathrooms.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the cameras set up in the bathrooms were about the size of two 20-cent pieces, with the capacity to record for about two hours but not to transmit.

The cameras used were not permanently installed, staff have been told, but it’s unclear for how long and with what frequency they were being placed near women’s toilets and showers.

Meanwhile, the incident is being viewed as a major security lapse.

“As this is an ongoing legal matter, the department is unable to comment further. The welfare and privacy of all staff remains a priority for the department and we continue to provide appropriate support,” a spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was quoted as saying.
