"You can't understand the trauma I felt, it was probably very different trauma to how he (Warner) felt, and I can't possibly understand that.

"I guess moving forward there will be great lessons for all of us, including Dave.

Bancroft's ban expired in December, while those of Warner and former captain Steve Smith will end March 29.

Bancroft had no regrets about his interview with former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, saying he felt he had "important learnings to share".

"I guess if other people were triggered by that, I guess that's their battle to face," he said.

"But if I was able to touch people through some parts of my journey, and to help them I guess break through [in] their lives, that was my sole intention for that."

Bancroft has signed to play with English county side Durham as he looks to regain a place in the test side for the Ashes starting in August.

"I think I love the game far more authentically now," he said.

"You know at times you get caught up in some unhealthy values that playing at the highest level can sometimes present -- at the end of the day it's a game of cricket, and it's nice that that's why I play the game (now)."

Australia on Tuesday unveiled a new national integrity body to tackle cheating and corruption in sport in the wake of a ball-tampering "sandpapergate" scandal that rocked cricket.

The new watchdog, Sport Integrity Australia, will combine the powers of three existing agencies, including the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA), to better investigate doping, match-fixing, illegal betting, organised crime and corruption.

"We have seen the massive fall-out from the cricket ball-tampering scandal and the loss of belief in our national cricket team and we are determined to prevent incidents like this from happening," Sports Minister Bridget McKenzie said in a statement.

"Australian sports lovers deserve to know that the sport they watch and the teams they support are competing on a level playing field and playing fairly," she said.

The current agencies are set to receive a boost in funding before Sport Integrity Australia formally launches in two years.

Canberra said it was also setting up a national sports tribunal, to be trialled over two years, to hear anti-doping rule violations and other sports disputes.

The sports-mad nation was stunned when its two top Test cricketers, captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner, as well as Cameron Bancroft, were caught trying to alter the ball against South Africa in Cape Town in March.

Smith and Warner were banned for a year and Bancroft for nine months.

"I had a choice and I made a massive mistake and that is what is in my control," said Bancroft, who admitted he had often pondered what would have happened if he had said no and concluded it was a no-win situation.

"I would have gone to bed and I would have felt like I had let everybody down. I would have felt like I had let the team down. I would have left like I had hurt our chances to win the game of cricket."

Last week Smith also opened up as he begins to re-emerge into public life, distancing himself from the plot while admitting he failed as a captain by turning a blind eye.

Asked what happened in the changing rooms at Cape Town before Bancroft attempted to cheat, he said: "For me in the room, I walked past something and had the opportunity to stop it and I didn't do it and that was my leadership failure.

"It was the potential for something to happen and it went on and happened out in the field," he added.

"I had the opportunity to stop it at that point rather than say, 'I don't want to know anything about it'.

"And that was my failure of leadership. And, you know, I've taken responsibility for that."

Smith made no mention of Warner, who has previously apologised and accepted responsibility for his part in the scandal.

Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts said Wednesday it was time to move on.

"The events of Cape Town were investigated and dealt with some nine months ago now so there's no new news there," he told reporters ahead of the third Test against India in Melbourne.

"What's important at this point is that we work with the players and with the leaders of the team on the reintegration of the sanctioned players when they become eligible for selection.”

Melbourne's Herald Sun cited Roberts as saying Cricket Australia would take the extraordinary step of canvassing the attitude of the dressing room before allowing the banned players back.

Waugh said Australia's internal system was such that the players had lost touch with reality, thinking they are larger than the sport.

"They are in a bit of a bubble and they are protected, you know they are insulated from a lot of things. They've got a lot of people around the side that protect them and tell them how good they are and how everything's fantastic and sometimes you can lose touch with reality and I think that was best summed up when Steve Smith said that 'we won't make that same mistake again and we'll just get on with it'.

"They just didn't realise how big a mistake it was and what they'd actually done. So that, to me, just summed up that maybe they were out of touch with what the average person thinks."

The bans on the players will end in March 2019, opening up opportunity for them to get back to the side for the World Cup and Australia's Ashes tour.

Waugh feels dealing with public will be the biggest mental battle the trio will face.

"I know that Smith will be passionate, he's still only young, he loves cricket and he's got that drive to get back there. His biggest challenge will be to overcome people talking about it, because the rest of his life someone will probably mention it once a day. What happened?

A 12-months ban for ball-tampering appears very harsh to some fans, let's take a look back when the "bully" Australians have tarnished the "gentleman's game". There is enough proof to nail the Aussies.

Not too long ago former Australian batsman Mark Waugh and legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne were involved in a betting scandal when they admitted to taking money to pass on pitch report to a bookie during Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in 1994. Both players were fined but to some extent, the incident was covered-up.

Disgraced Australia former vice-captain <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/apologetic-warner-resigned-to-never-playing-for-australia-again-127441">David Warner</a>'s wife Candice said Sunday she blamed herself for his part in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/topic/ball%20tampering">ball-tampering scandal</a>, adding that the taunts they faced in South Africa took a huge toll.

Opening batsman Warner was banned for one year from domestic and international cricket over the plot to change the condition of the ball on the third day of the third Test against South Africa eight days ago.

In a tearful press conference in Sydney Saturday, the 31-year-old spoke of his fear that he would never get to represent Australia again as his wife watched on.

"I feel like it's all my fault and it's killing me -- it's absolutely killing me," Candice Warner told Sydney's Sunday Telegraph.

The Test series was already fractious before the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/topic/ball%20tampering">ball-tampering affair</a>, with a row between <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/apologetic-warner-resigned-to-never-playing-for-australia-again-127441">David Warner</a> and Quinton de Kock during the first Test which the Australian said was sparked when the South African insulted his wife.

Two senior Cricket South Africa officials were also photographed with three spectators wearing All Black rugby player Sonny Bill Williams face masks during the second Test in reference to a reported intimate encounter Candice Warner had with him in 2007 before she met Warner.

Candice Warner said she was not making excuses for her husband's behaviour over the scandal but added that he was "protecting me as much as he could and protecting the girls (their children)".

Cricket Australia has banned Steve Smith and David Warner from international and domestic cricket for a year while opening batsman Cameron Bancroft was exiled for nine months over the incident during the third Test in South Africa.

Under its current code of conduct, the ICC was unable to impose more than a full-match fine and a one-Test ban on Smith under its current code of conduct, unlike the more stringent penalty since levied by Cricket Australia.

"We've come to realise that the world -- not only Australia -- regards ball-tampering in a very serious light. It goes to the spirit of the game," said chief executive David Richardson.

"I must admit this has been an eye-opener for me personally. We need to look at the penalty imposed, specific to ball-tampering.

"Around the world, ball-tampering is considered cheating... I think we need to look at it again, and this is what has prompted this review."

Richardson said a wide-ranging review, likely to be informed by respected former players such as Allan Border, Anil Kumble, Shaun Pollock and Courtney Walsh, would be an opportunity to "draw a line in the sand" and address fans' concerns about how the game is played.

"The reaction all around the world shows us that if we neglect the way the game is played, cricket is itself in danger," he said.

"We are going to ignore (that) at our peril... we don't want to leave this lingering, and hope it will all go away."

"We hope this review will develop that universal culture of what it means to play the game in the correct manner.

"We want member countries, across the board, to be more accountable for the behaviour of their players -- take responsibility for it. That applies to all teams, not only Australia."
