Babies are now stuck in a war zone as war in Ukraine has prevented biological parents from claiming their babies.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine jolts surrogacy market: Citizenship of newborn babies unclear

As Russian troops entered Ukrainian cities, babies were also born in the capital city of Kyiv. New mothers talk about the moment when they heard explosion and how their babies were born.

According to Israeli scientists, symptoms of autism can be detected within the first year of one’s birth based on the proper identification of symptoms.

Studies were conducted by the Mifne Center for Early Intervention in the Treatment of Autism and the Weisfeld School of Social Work Continuing Education Unit at Bar-Ilan University

Both studies were published in the peer-reviewed academic periodical International Journal of Pediatrics & Neonatal Care in December. But, both differed in their methodology.

The first study focused on early detection of autism based on video recordings of infants, while the second one compared the impact of early treatments that began at two different stages in life.

The first study used the video recordings of 110 infants (84 boys and 26 girls) who were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder between the ages of 2 and 3.

The scientists had analysed the video clips of the infants during the first year of their lives that were filmed by the parents.

Notably, the parents had no suspicion regarding possible autism diagnosis at the time of filming, so the videos were used as a control group.

While analysing the clips, the scientists detected a number of symptoms such as aversion to touch, delayed motor development, excessive activity or passivity, lack of reactions, refusing to eat, an accelerated head circumference growth and a lack of eye contact.

Based on these findings, the scientists postulated that 89 per cent of the symptoms could be observed when the baby was just 4-6 months of age—which is difficult for parents to interpret these symptoms.

Keeping this in mind, the scientists at Mifne Center developed a screening tool known as ESPASSI to detect infants at risk for autism and used as a pilot at Ichilov Hospital.

The second study compared the effectiveness of treatments on 45 toddlers between 1-2 years of age and 39 toddlers between 2-3 years of age. All of the infants were being treated at the Mifne Center.

All of the babies were undergoing therapeutic therapy which is based on family therapy and attachment theory, which necessitates the entire family be given support and learn necessary coping skills.

Overall, reducing the time between early detection and therapy was found to have been far more successful in preventing neurodevelopment from severely deviating.

It also is important for another aspect: the family. When a parent is in constant worry, this essentially triggers a vicious cycle of sorts, something that is very harmful for neurodevelopment.

If the parents have the appropriate knowledge, support and coping mechanisms, however, they can properly help their child develop, the study found

“These two studies confirm that there is a window of opportunity and it makes complete sense that early detection and intervention will affect neuroanatomical development components at a stage which is most influential for the rapidly developing brain,” Alonim, scientist and lead author of both studies, said in a statement.

Who says miracles don’t happen in real world. In what may turn several people into a believer, two babies have survived a tornado in Kentucky state of the US recently.

No, we are not kidding. In the recent tornadoes, 15-month-old Kaden and three-month-old Dallas, who had taken shelter in the bathtub with a blanket, pillow and Bible on last Friday, have miraculously survived the onslaught of the nature.

When the tornado struck, the house, which is located in Hopkins county, started shaking, said the grandparent, Clara Lutz.

“Next thing I knew, the tub had lifted and it was out of my hands. I couldn’t hold on. I just – oh my God. All I could say was, ‘Lord please bring my babies back safely. Please, I beg thee’,” Lutz told WFIE-TV.

If a study is to be believed, pollution caused by different chemicals, such as mercury, chromium, lead and aluminum, seems to have an effect on the sex ratio of babies.

The study examined over 100 possible factors while taking into account entire Swedish population and half the US population. Along with numerous pollutants, poverty indicators have also been linked to sex ratio changes of children born to millions of parents.

It found that mercury, chromium and aluminum pollution seem to have led to birth of more boys, while lead pollution resulted in rise in the number of girls.

Due to extreme chemical exposures, the farming also affects sex ratio.

The indicators of stress and deprivation measures have also been linked to high changes in sex ratios.

The factors like weather temperature, season of birth, violent crime rates and unemployment, did not show any relation.

The world’s most premature baby has survived a year after braving difficulties. The baby was born five months prematurely at Children’s Minnesota hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

According to the Guinness World Records, this makes Richard Scott William Hutchinson the world’s most premature baby to survive after birth. Upon birth, the baby weighed less than half a kilogramme and the doctors were expecting things to get worse from there. Medical complications had forced the baby’s mother Beth Hutchinson into labour way earlier than expected.

But beating all odds, the baby just celebrated its first birthday. According to Guinness, the baby was so small that the parents were able to hold it in a single palm of their hands after birth.

Richard’s neonatologist at the hospital, Dr Stacy Kern told Guinness that when the baby was born, the parents were given a 0 per cent chance of survival by their experts.

After a complicated birth like this one, the first few weeks decide the fate of the baby. And Richard pulled through for an entire year and hopefully more. The journey to get here wasn’t easy though. Coronavirus restrictions prevented Richard’s parents from staying with him at the hospital and they had to travel daily from their home in St Croix County in Wisconsin to Minneapolis.

In December 2020, baby Richard was allowed to go home only after spending six months in the hospital. June 5 marked the first birthday of the baby, which the family celebrated with fervour.

Richard’s mother Beth told Guinness - “It doesn’t feel real”. Adding, she said that they were still surprised by the baby’s perseverance. “But we’re happy”, she added.

The world is facing the worst pandemic ever in history. Stories of miseries, despair and hopelessness are surrounding everyone.

However, there are stories that are inspiring even during these difficult times. Two nurses from Kashmir valley are setting a new bar of dedication towards their work.

One such story is of Shagufta Khan, a nurse based in Srinagar and working in the Jawahar Lal Nehru Hospital. Shagufta has managed to help deliver over 100 babies in a hospital caring for covid positive mothers. She has been working in the Covid ward of neonatology since the pandemic started. Not only is she helping mothers, but she is also taking care of these newborns.

She is thankful for the support she has received from her family and says that is one of the reasons she has been able to help people non stop and care for the covid patients.

''My family supported me in this, otherwise, it wouldn’t be possible. They helped and understood the challenge. My mother-in-law and father-in-law have acted as huge pillars of support,'' she said.

The United Nations on Wednesday urged the world to hire more midwives as millions die due to lack of care after childbirth. The report said that midwives are generally “overlooked and ignored” across the world, even though they save millions of lives every year.

The organisation compiled a report in collaboration with medics and suggested urgent investment to address the global shortages of midwives. According to the report, the world is currently short on 900,000 midwives. The agency hopes the call would also provide employment opportunities to midwives who are majorly overlooked globally.

In its “State of World’s Midwifery 2021” report, the UN added that two in every three deaths in childbirth could be prevented by 2035 if women are recruited are trained by governments around the world starting now.

"Midwives are continually overlooked and ignored," Franka Cadee, president of the International Confederation of Midwives was quoted as saying by Reuters. Cadee co-authored Wednesday's report with the World Health Organization and the UNFPA, a United Nations agency. “It's time for governments to acknowledge the evidence surrounding the life-promoting, life-saving impact of midwife-led care," Cadee added in a statement.

The report claims that almost one in five women across the world give birth without the assistance of a skilled health provider. This could risk the lives of both the mother and the babies, as per the report which collated data from 194 countries.

UN estimates claim 2 million stillbirths a year take place. In addition, 2.4 newborns die every year. At least 295,000 mothers also die during childbirth, the report claims. According to the report, 1.1 more health workers trained in sexual, reproductive, material and new-born healthcare are required.

Families in Asia's financial hub of Hong Kong are suffering isolation and trauma after strict coronavirus rules have led to babies being separated from parents and those with newborns herded into tiny quarantine quarters for up to 14 days.

Hong Kong authorities have ordered that anyone testing positive for the virus must go to hospital, including babies, while all their close contacts, even those, who test negative, are sent to makeshift quarantine camps.

"It’s crazy," said one mother, who said, she had to abruptly stop breastfeeding following separation from her seven-month-old son last week after she was diagnosed with COVID-19.

"So instead of dealing with Covid, I’m dealing with blocked sore breasts."

The separation of families over the virus is not common in other developed cities, say legal experts.

She urged families to push back against such steps, saying they should stay with their children, particularly those being breastfed.

Hong Kong's Covid rules see babies isolated, families cramped in tiny spaces

According to researchers, bottle-fed babies have been consuming more than a million pieces of microplastics each day.

The researchers in Ireland found that at an average bottle-fed babies consumed 1.6 million plastic microparticles each day during the first 12 months of their lives. The research was published in the Nature Food journal.

The study looked at rate of microplastic release in ten types of baby bottles with polypropylene being the most commonly used plastic for food containers.

A research had earlier concluded that microplastics and nanoplastics have been found in humans worldwide.

According to "Plastic Oceans”, at least 300 million tonnes of plastic waste is produced worldwide every year with microplastics being 0.2 inches and nanonplastics smaller than 0.001 mm.

Researchers have found that exposure to high water temperatures has had the biggest effect on microplastic release, going from 0.6 million particles per litre on an average at 25C to 55 million/litre at 95C.

According to the researchers, babies in developed countries were reportedly taking the most plastic with 2.3 million particles daily in North America and 2.6 million in Europe which it attributed to low breast-feeding rates in richer countries.

The study had taken World Health Organization(WHO) guidelines on sterilisation as the basis of the study. The researchers said that proper studies on microplastic impact on human health needs to be carried out further.

Earlier, a study by Arizona State University had claimed that tiny particles of plastic exist in human tissues in lungs, liver, spleen and kidneys with microplastics being the most common.

According to researchers, bottle-fed babies have been consuming more than a million pieces of microplastics each day. Also Read: Enzyme eats plastic 6 times faster The researchers in Ireland found that at an average bottle-fed babies consumed 1.

Shinzo Abe had announced a national emergency on April 7 as the number of positive cases were still rising even after two weeks of lockdown in big cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. The spread of infection has also been accelerating in other parts of Japan.

The death toll in Japan now stands at 276, out of 11,137 positive COVID-19 cases. This tally excludes the positive cases from Diamond Princess cruise ship which was quarantined on the shore of Tokyo two months ago, and also the residents who returned back to Japan from China through charter flights.

Following the lockdown and the rapid increase in cases, around 220 Indians, which includes 92 dependants, have reached out to the Indian Embassy in Tokyo with a request to be evacuated to India.

As the world rings in the New Year, UNICEF has released a report on the number of newborns on the New Year's day.

As per the report released on December 31, 2018, over three lakh babies will be born on the New Year's day today. What is shocking is the fact that India tops the list with the highest number of births on January 1 with around 69,944 newborns.

The list has China at the second spot, with 44,940 babies, followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia and the United States coming at the fifth spot.

An estimated 395, 072 babies will be born around the world on New Year’s Day, UNICEF said in its release, adding that a quarter of the total number will be born in South Asia alone.

"As the clock strikes midnight, Sydney will greet an estimated 168 babies, followed by 310 in Tokyo, 605 in Beijing, 166 in Madrid and finally, 317 in New York," UNICEF's release read.

"Fiji in the Pacific will most likely deliver 2019’s first baby; the United States, its last. Globally, over half of these births are estimated to take place in eight countries," it added.

The report throws a spotlight on the burgeoning state of population in India which stands second in the world, right after China, with over 1.2 billion people.

Tiny revellers: Over 3 lakh babies to be born on New Year’s day across globe, around 70,000 in India alone

"Give birth, don't delay!", says a rousing call by the Serbian state to young couples.

"Let babies' cries be heard!" is another of the baby-making slogans Serbia is busy producing - while it struggles to increase actual births.

Women say they need better support, not words of encouragement to grow the country's population.

Massive emigration coupled with the plummeting birth rate, which at 1.5 children per family is among the lowest in Europe, has brought Serbia's population down to under seven million people.

According to the United Nations, Serbia's population is expected to shrink a further 15 per cent by 2050.

Desperate to reverse the trend, Serbian officials have made some head-scratching proposals, including a plan announced in June to construct "lower-storey homes" in areas with the lowest birth rates.

President Aleksandar Vucic said it was based on a study that showed couples have nearly double the number of children in two-to-four storey homes than in towering apartment blocks.

The comments befuddled the local press, with one newspaper going on an unsuccessful hunt to find any academic expert who had heard of such a study, discovering only "laughs".

The minister in charge of demographics, Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, nevertheless defended the idea that environment can play a role.

"It is a fact that on the edge of big cities where settlements include yards where kids play and parents have a coffee... That kids' joy and cries could be heard more often," she told AFP.

In February, her ministry announced a campaign to tackle the declining numbers and awarded the best pro-birth slogan in a nationwide cash-prize competition.

Among the winners were: "Mum, I don't want to be alone. Dad, I want a brother" and "Love and babies are what we need first!" The ministry will also introduce an award called "The Best Family Friend" for companies that support young parents, Djukic Dejanovic said.

A new maternity care law passed last year provides some additional aid for parents who have a third and a fourth child, entitling them to 10 years of 30,000 dinars ($280) in monthly support.

That led President Vucic to proclaim: "A mother that gives birth to a third and a fourth child will have 30,000 dinars a month from the state to do nothing... Just to give birth." But critics say the law excludes many would-be mothers.

The full package of state aid for maternity leave is only available to women who have been working without interruption for 18 months.

"What about many women who either do unregistered work in the grey economy or volunteer in public service, like doctors or lawyers, without any payment?", asked Tatjana Macura, an opposition MP who has been advocating to change the law on behalf of the NGO "Mame su zakon" (Mums Rule).

According to various estimates, more than a quarter of Serbia's working population is employed in unofficial work, with an even higher proportion among women.

"These women are invisible for the system because they have worked illegally and would not receive any aid," said Macura.

The law also offers minimal maternity support to unemployed women in a country where the youth jobless rate was over 30 per cent in 2017.

Many women are also afraid to take maternity leave because it remains common for businesses to fire them afterwards, despite the practice being illegal, added Macura.

The new maternity law also cuts support for women earning more than 1,200 euros a month.

Instead of receiving five months of salary during maternity leave as the previous law allowed, they will only receive three.

Andrijana Marinkovic, a 33-year-old mother affected by the change, said it made her consider raising her one-month-old baby boy abroad, such as an EU or another Western country which gives more support to family life.

"Nobody makes a decision to become a parent because of state support or lack of it, but the (Serbian) state certainly doesn't make that decision easier," Marinkovic said.

On top of the shrinking birth rate, a "brain drain" sees tens of thousands of young Serbians pack their bags every year to study and work in wealthier countries.

That means the challenge is not only encouraging more births, but persuading Serbians to have their babies at home.

Kristina Markovic, a 22-year-old economist, works part-time and lives with an unemployed partner.

"We plan to have a family but not until we both have stable jobs," which means regular salaries, insurance and the possibility to live independently from parents, she said.

"We will decide (to have kids) eventually but my wish would be to give birth in some European Union state," she added.

The Chinese hospital linked to a controversial experiment purporting to have created the world's first genetically-edited babies denied its involvement Tuesday.

Shenzhen Harmonicare Women and Children's Hospital said in a statement that it suspected the signature on a document approving the experiment, specifically its adherence to ethical standards, was falsified.

It has also asked police to investigate.

"We have always firmly opposed the development of genetic experiments that violate human ethics and morality," the hospital said on its website.

The experiment, which was led by Chinese professor He Jiankui, claims to have altered the DNA of twin girls born a few weeks ago to prevent them from contracting HIV, and has prompted a heated debate among the scientific community.

Some warned that exposing healthy embryos and children to gene editing was irresponsible, while others denounced He's experiment as premature and dangerous.

Chinese scientists and institutions have also criticised the experiment, with 100 scientists in China issuing a joint statement calling for better state legislation.

"It is a great blow to the global reputation and development of biomedical research in China," said the statement posted on the Twitter-like platform Weibo.

The university where he works has also distanced itself from the scientist's experiment.

"This research work was carried out by Professor He Jiankui outside of the school," the Southern University of Science and Technology said in a statement Monday.

He has been on unpaid leave since February and his research is a "serious violation of academic ethics and norms", it said.

The Shenzhen Harmonicare Women and Children's Hospital too has denied any involvement with He.

In interviews with Chinese media, Cheng Zhen, the general manager of the hospital, said the hospital had not partnered with He, and that he had never even met the man before.

He's experiment -- if it had been carried out -- is prohibited under Chinese laws and regulations, according to state media CCTV in a report citing remarks at a Tuesday event by the deputy minister of China's Ministry of Science and Technology, Xu Nanping.

Specifically, Chinese laws limit in vitro human embryonic stem cell research to a maximum of 14 days, said Xu.

Babies born prematurely may grow up to have weaker bones, according to a new study which also found that low birth weight plays a big role in developing osteoporosis.

"Our study shows that both those born prematurely with a very low birth weight and those who were born full term, but small for their gestational age, had lower bone mass than the control group, who were born full term with normal weights," said Chandima Balasuriya, a specialist in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Researchers found that adults who were born full term but were small for their gestational age also had lower bone mass.

These findings are important since peak bone mass is a major determinant of future osteoporosis, the researchers said.
Researchers looked at 186 adults who were 26-28 years old. They found that 52 of the participants were very low birth weight babies, with a mean birth weight of 1.2 kilogrammes, and a mean gestational age of 29 weeks.

Another 59 participants had been born to term, but were considered "small for gestational age", with a mean birth weight of just under 3 kilogrammes.

Researchers also had a control group of 77 adults who were born at term with normal weight.

For all three groups, researchers measured bone mineral content and density in the spine, neck, hip and the whole body, and looked at current height and weight, smoking, level of physical activity and a variety of other measures.

When they looked at the data from adults who were born small for their gestational age at term, they found that this group had lower bone mass than adults who were born with normal weight at term.

When researchers corrected the bone mass measurement for the heights of this group, who tended to be shorter, they found that the low bone mass was partly due to their smaller body size.

In contrast, body size alone did not account for the lower bone mass researchers found in adults who had been pre-term babies.

"Ensuring that children with low birth weights have a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D and protein, in combination with exercise that involves weight-bearing physical activities may help reduce risk of bone fractures later in life," Balasuriya said.
