A huge asteroid believed to be more than one and half times the size of the London Eye is approaching Earth, space agency NASA has warned.

The famous UK landmark is 443 feet high, and the space rock is larger than the London Eye by as much as 50 per cent.

The space agency has given the asteroid the name Asteroid 2020ND, and have branded the asteroid "potentially hazardous".

The rock will make its closest approach to Earth on July 24, reports Birmingham Live.

NASA has warned it will come within just 0.034 astronomical units (AU) of our planet.

The space agency said: "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are currently defined based on parameters that measure the asteroid’s potential to make threatening close approaches to the Earth.

Five asteroids head towards Earth; one the size of stadium

The city size-asteroid which wiped out 75 per cent&nbsp;of all species including the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, came from the northeast at a steep angle according to a new study.

Investigations at the crater site, together with computer simulations, suggest the impactor dug into the crust at an inclination of up to 60 degrees.

This exacerbated the climate fallout.

A new study of Chicxulub crater in Mexico, where&nbsp;the asteroid&nbsp;struck, has revealed that the angle and speed of the impact were probably in the perfect range to send clouds of choking vapour into the skies.

When an asteroid hits a planet, the resulting crater is highly dependent on the angle of the impact.

Gareth Collins at Imperial College London in the UK and his colleagues compared a set of simulations with geological data gathered at&nbsp;Chicxulub crater&nbsp;to reconstruct that impact.

“That initial impact gouges a huge hole in the ground, which then collapses spectacularly and you form this huge overshoot, rather like what happens when you throw a pebble into the pond,” says Collins. In this “overshoot”, the middle of the hole bounces back up to create a plateau at the centre of the crater.

In simulations of the Chicxulub impact, that central plateau was tilted toward the direction the asteroid came from, though how tilted it was depended on the angle of the impact.

According to the study,&nbsp;3D simulations showed that the asteroid hit at an angle of 40 to 60 degrees, what Gareth Collins, a professor of planetary science at Imperial College London's department of earth science and engineering, described as a worst-case scenario for the dinosaurs.

<ul data-layout="list-hierarchical-xs">
</ul>

"The asteroid strike unleashed an incredible amount of climate-changing gases into the atmosphere, triggering a chain of events that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. This was likely worsened by the fact that it struck at one of the deadliest possible angles," said Collins, the lead author of the&nbsp;study&nbsp;that published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, in a statement.

"We know that this was among the worst-case scenarios for the lethality on impact, because it put more hazardous debris into the upper atmosphere and scattered it everywhere — the very thing that led to a nuclear winter," he added.

Such a strike likely unleashed billions of tons of sulfur and other gases into the atmosphere, blocking the sun and leading to a dramatic cooling of the Earth's climate.

'First-of-its-kind' asteroid spotted near Jupiter by astronomers

A large near-Earth asteroid will safely pass by our planet on Wednesday morning, providing astronomers with an exceptional opportunity to study the 1.5-mile-wide (2-kilometer-wide) object in great detail.

The asteroid, called 1998 OR2, will make its closest approach at 5:55 a.m. EDT (2:55 a.m. PDT).

While this is known as a "close approach" by astronomers, it's still very far away: The asteroid will get no closer than about 3.9 million miles (6.3 million kilometers), passing more than 16 times farther away than the Moon.

Asteroid 1998 OR2 was discovered by the Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in July 1998, and for the past two decades, astronomers have tracked it.

As a result, we understand its orbital trajectory very precisely, and we can say with confidence that this asteroid poses no possibility of impact for at least the next 200 years.

Its next close approach to Earth will occur in 2079 when it will pass by closer -- only about four times the lunar distance.

Despite this, 1998 OR2 is still categorized as a large "potentially hazardous asteroid" because, over the course of millennia, very slight changes in the asteroid's orbit may cause it to present more of a hazard to Earth than it does now.

This is one of the reasons why tracking this asteroid during its close approach -- using telescopes and especially ground-based radar -- is important, as observations such as these will enable an even better long-term assessment of the hazard presented by this asteroid.

Close approaches by large asteroids like 1998 OR2 are quite rare.

The previous close approach by a large asteroid was made by asteroid Florence in September 2017. That 3-mile-wide (5-kilometer-wide) object zoomed past Earth at 18 lunar distances.

On average, we expect asteroids of this size to fly by our planet this close roughly once every five years.

Since they are bigger, asteroids of this size reflect much more light than smaller asteroids and are therefore easier to detect with telescopes.

Almost all near-Earth asteroids (about 98%) of the size of 1998 OR2 or larger have already been discovered, tracked and cataloged.

It is extremely unlikely there could be an impact over the next century by one of these large asteroids, but efforts to discover all asteroids that could pose an impact hazard to Earth continue.

Asteroid 1998 OR2 to safely fly past earth this week

An asteroid will fly by Earth on Wednesday, but it's not expected to collide with our planet. It is&nbsp;estimated to be 1.2 miles wide.

The asteroid is called 52768 (1998 OR2), and it was first spotted in 1998. On April 29, it will pass within 3,908,791 miles of Earth, moving at 19,461 miles per hour.

The flyby is expected to occur at 5:56 a.m. ET, according to NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies. They have been tracking this particular asteroid for 20 years, according to NASA.

&nbsp;A Japanese space probe is heading home from an asteroid 250 million km (155 million miles) from Earth after collecting sub-surface samples that could help scientists seeking the origins of life, Japan's space agency said on Monday.

Asteroids are believed to have formed at the dawn of the solar system and scientists say the asteroid, called Ryugu, may contain organic matter that may have contributed to life on Earth.

If the return trip is completed successfully, that will be the first time samples from beneath an asteroid's surface have been brought back to Earth, a spokeswoman for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said.

The unmanned <a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../japans-hayabusa2-probe-lands-successfully-on- asteroid-234824">Hayabusa 2</a>, named after a falcon, began leaving <a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../japanese-spacecraft-hayabusa2-lands-on-ryugu- asteroid-takes-samples-198878">Ryugu </a>last week, but it is still sending images back to Earth.

Those observations will be wrapped up on Monday or Tuesday before its main engine is activated for the year-long flight, JAXA said.

"This is us bidding farewell to Ryugu," the spokeswoman said.

Hayabusa 2 is scheduled to return to Earth by the end of 2020. After dropping off a capsule containing the samples, without landing, the probe itself will keep on going and fly away into space, finishing its six-year, 29 billion yen ($266 million) mission.

Japan space probe on its way back after asteroid mission

The asteroid, labelled 2019 OK, is about the size of a large airplane. Had it hit, it could have wiped out an entire city.

A giant asteroid just whizzed past Earth, and no one had a clue!

Japan's Hayabusa2 probe landed successfully Thursday on a distant <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/japanese-spacecraft-hayabusa2-lands-on-ryugu-asteroid-takes-samples-198878">asteroid for a final touchdown</a>, hoping to collect samples that could shed light on the evolution of the solar system.

"The touchdown is successful," spokesman Takayuki Tomobe from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

The successful touchdown was greeted with cheering and applause in the JAXA mission control room, with officials grinning and shaking hands.

JAXA officials said earlier that the probe appeared to have landed successfully, but confirmation came only after Hayabusa2 lifted back up from the asteroid and resumed communications with the control room.

"All of us are relieved to see that the probe has resumed sending data from its antenna, which can send a large amount of data to us," Tomobe said.

"This means that the probe is not in a serious condition," he added.

The brief landing Thursday is the second time Hayabusa2 has touched down on the desolate asteroid Ryugu, some 300 million kilometres (185 million miles) from Earth.

The complex multi-year mission has also involved sending rovers and robots down to the surface.

Thursday's touchdown was intended to collect pristine materials from beneath the surface of the asteroid that could provide insights into what the solar system was like at its birth, some 4.6 billion years ago.

To get at those crucial materials, in April an "impactor" was fired from Hayabusa2 towards Ryugu in a risky process that created a crater on the asteroid's surface and stirred up material that had not previously been exposed to the atmosphere.

Hayabusa2's first touchdown was in February, when it landed briefly on Ryugu and fired a bullet into the surface to puff up dust for collection, before blasting back to its holding position.

The second touchdown required special preparations because any problems could mean the probe would lose the precious materials already gathered during its first landing.

A photo of the crater taken by Hayabusa2's camera after the April blast showed that parts of the asteroid's surface are covered with materials that are "obviously different" from the rest of the surface, mission manager Makoto Yoshikawa told reporters before the latest touchdown.

The probe was expected to land briefing in an area some 20 metres away from the centre of the crater to collect the unidentified materials believed to be "ejecta" from the blast.

"It would be safe to say that extremely attractive materials are near the crater," Tsuda said.

The touchdown is the last major part of Hayabusa2's mission, and when the probe returns to Earth next year scientists hope to learn more about the history of the solar system and even the origin of life from its samples.

"I'm really looking forward to analysing these materials," Yoshikawa said.

The Hayabusa2 mission has attracted international attention, with Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May sending a video to the probe's team ahead of the landing.

"The world is watching. We love you, take care Hayabusa2," the musician told the team.

At about the size of a large refrigerator and equipped with solar panels to keep it powered, Hayabusa2 is the successor to JAXA's first asteroid explorer, Hayabusa -&nbsp;Japanese for falcon.

That probe returned with dust samples from a smaller, potato-shaped asteroid in 2010, despite various setbacks during its epic seven-year odyssey and was hailed as a scientific triumph.

Hayabusa2's photos of Ryugu, which means "Dragon Palace" in Japanese and refers to a castle at the bottom of the ocean in an ancient Japanese tale, show the asteroid has a rough surface full of boulders.

The Hayabusa2 mission was launched in December 2014, and has a price tag of around $270 million.&nbsp;

It has already made history, including with the creation of the crater on Ryugu's surface.

In 2005, NASA's Deep Impact project succeeded in creating an artificial crater on a comet but only for observation purposes.

NASA plans to avert asteroid that may hit Earth in 2135

According to NASA, an asteroid will be passing by the Earth this Friday.

The asteroid is not big in size and is estimated to be between 15 and 30 metres in size.

The asteroid, which goes by the name 2018 CB, will pass closely by the Earth at around 5.30 pm EST (4 am on Saturday in India).

The asteroid will be passing by the Earth at a distance of about 64,000 kilometres from the Earth -- less than one-fifth the distance of Earth to the Moon.

Experts estimate 2018 CB to be larger than the asteroid that entered the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013.&nbsp;

Such asteroids do not usually come this close to our planet.&nbsp;

2018 CB was discovered recently on February 4 at the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) in Arizona. Another asteroid discovered the same day as 2018 CB passed by the Earth on Tuesday.&nbsp;

A dark, reddish and cigar-shaped object that zipped through our solar system from outer space last month is nothing like any cosmic body seen before, say scientists who have classified it as the first interstellar asteroid.

Last month the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawai&#39;i picked up a faint point of light moving across the sky.

It initially looked like a typical fast-moving small asteroid, but additional observations over the next couple of days allowed its orbit to be computed fairly accurately.

The orbit calculations revealed beyond any doubt that this body did not originate from inside the solar system, like all other asteroids or comets ever observed, but instead had come from interstellar space.

Although originally classified as a comet, observations from revealed no signs of cometary activity after it passed closest to the Sun in September. The object was reclassified as an interstellar asteroid and named &#39;Oumuamua.

The name, which was chosen by the Pan-STARRS team, is of Hawaiian origin and reflects the way this object is like a messenger sent from the distant past to reach out to us, researchers said.

The asteroid is up to 400 metres long and highly- elongated - perhaps 10 times as long as it is wide.

That aspect ratio is greater than that of any asteroid or comet observed in our solar system to date, scientists said.

While its elongated shape is quite surprising, and unlike asteroids seen in our solar system, it may provide new clues into how other solar systems formed.

When the &#39;Oumuamua was spotted, it had already passed its closest point to the Sun and was heading back into interstellar space, researchers said.

European Southern Observatory (ESO)&#39;s Very Large Telescope (VLT) was immediately called into action to measure the object&#39;s orbit, brightness and colour more accurately than smaller telescopes could achieve.

Combining the images from various telescopes, astronomers led by Karen Meech from Institute for Astronomy in the US found that &#39;Oumuamua varies dramatically in brightness by a factor of ten as it spins on its axis every 7.3 hours.

&quot;This unusually large variation in brightness means that the object is highly elongated: about ten times as long as it is wide, with a complex, convoluted shape,&quot; said Meech.

&quot;We also found that it has a dark red colour, similar to objects in the outer Solar System, and confirmed that it is completely inert, without the faintest hint of dust around it,&quot; she said.

These properties suggest that &#39;Oumuamua is dense, possibly rocky or with high metal content, lacks significant amounts of water or ice, and that its surface is now dark and reddened due to the effects of irradiation from cosmic rays over millions of years. It is estimated to be at least 400 metres long.

Preliminary orbital calculations suggested that the object had come from the approximate direction of the bright star Vega, in the northern constellation of Lyra.

However, even travelling at a breakneck speed of about 95,000 kilometres per hour, it took so long for the interstellar object to make the journey to our Solar System that Vega was not near that position when the asteroid was there about 300,000 years ago.

&#39;Oumuamua may well have been wandering through the Milky Way, unattached to any star system, for hundreds of millions of years before its chance encounter with the Solar System.

Astronomers estimate that an interstellar asteroid similar to &#39;Oumuamua passes through the inner Solar System about once per year, but they are faint and hard to spot so have been missed until now.

It is only recently that survey telescopes, such as Pan- STARRS, are powerful enough to have a chance to discover them.
