<p>The UAE Space Agency on Sunday expanded upon its mission to explore an asteroid belt situated between Mars and Jupiter. Buoyed by the success of the Hope Mars orbiter, the agency said the mission will be named Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA) and launched on a spacecraft named MBR Explorer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ambitious mission was first announced in October 2021 and according to the latest update, it is scheduled for launch in 2028. The mission will attempt to visit seven different asteroids and even land on one of them called (269) Justitia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"EMA takes a pioneering leap as the first mission to embark on the most extensive tour of the main asteroid belt nestled between Mars and Jupiter, culminating in a historic landing on (269) Justitia the mysterious spectrally red asteroid," read a statement by the space agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking after unveiling the name, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president and prime minister of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai, said his country will continue to expand its horizons in space.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We will never cease to look ahead; we will never cease our efforts to develop a brighter future for our young generations," said Al Maktoum whose name inspired the explorer's nomenclature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from UAE Space Agency, the mission will have participating entities from YahSat, UAE University, TII, Khalifa University and NYUAD.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Visting different asteroids&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>After the launch in 2028, the MRB Explorer will visit its first asteroid in 2030 and then pass by six asteroids viz. (10254) Westerwald, (623) Chimaera, (13294) Rockox; (88055) 2000 VA28, (23871) 1998 RC76 and (59980) 1999 SG6. The purpose of visiting the asteroids is that all of them represent "different classes of asteroid with varied compositional types,"</p>

<p>Notably, the MRB Explorer will have four scientific instruments to probe the geology, composition and structure of the asteroids: a high-resolution camera, a thermal infrared camera, a mid-wavelength spectrometer and an infrared spectrometer.</p>

<p>The solar system is being formed around the young star Fomalhaut. It is 25 light-years away from us. Though this distance appears huge, it is nothing when compared on a cosmic scale. The three asteroid belts are extending out to 14 billion miles (23 billion kilometres) around the star. This is 150 times the distance between Earth and the Sun.</p>

<p>Hubble Space Telescope, JWST's predecessor, had clicked the outer asteroid belt before. But JWST's powerful ability to take images in Infrared light has meant that we can now glean deeper into the Fomalhaut solar system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Where Webb really excels is that we're able to physically resolve the thermal glow from dust in those inner regions. So you can see inner belts that we could never see before," Schuyler Wolff, an astronomer at the University of Arizona who worked on the research, said, as quoted on the NASA website.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fomalhaut can be located by the naked eye as it is the brightest star in the southern constellation Piscis Austrinus.</p>

<p>According to NASA, the asteroid belts around Fomalhaut are likely to have been carved out of gravitational fields of planets we haven't yet been able to see.</p>

<p>Asteroid belts are often affected by the gravity of planets in a particular star system. For example, the massive gravitational force exerted by Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system, keeps the asteroids in their particular orbit and largely locked in space.</p>

<p>“The belts around Fomalhaut are kind of a mystery novel: Where are the planets?” said George Rieke, another team member and US science lead for Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), which made these observations. “I think it's not a very big leap to say there's probably a really interesting planetary system around the star.”</p>

<p>“We definitely didn't expect the more complex structure with the second intermediate belt and then the broader asteroid belt,” added Wolff. “That structure is very exciting because any time an astronomer sees a gap and rings in a disk, they say, ‘There could be an embedded planet shaping the rings!’”</p>

<p>Rieke was quoted by NASA.</p>

<p>The results of the research by the team have been published in the journal Nature Astronomy.</p>

<p>2023 FU6, which is a small 45-foot asteroid, will be at a distance of 1,870,000 km from Earth today. Asteroid 2023 FS11 which is an 82-foot asteroid will pass across the Earth by a margin of 6,610,000 km today.</p>

<p>Asteroid 2023 FA7, which is 92 feet, will fly near the Earth on April 4 at a distance of 2,250,000 km. Asteroid 2023 FQ7, which is a 65-foot house-sized asteroid, will approach the Earth on April 5.</p>

<p>Comets and asteroids, which are likely to make comparatively close approaches to Earth, are being tracked by NASA's Asteroid Watch dashboard.</p>

<p>The event has been described by astronomers as a once-in-a-decade event.</p>

<p>As per NASA, the event became an important opportunity for scientists and astronomers to expand their knowledge of asteroids, at a time when another space rock was discovered which was carrying the potential to hit Earth.</p>

<p>"There is no chance of this 'city killer' striking Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations," European Space Agency's planetary defence chief Richard Moissl said.</p>

<p>Moissl added that, according to the preliminary data, 2023 DZ2 was "a scientifically interesting object". However, he added that they needed more data to determine the composition of the asteroid.</p>

<p>Since the asteroid passed so close to the Earth, it was visible through small telescopes and binoculars across the globe.</p>

<p>The Virtual Telescope Project provided a live web broadcast of the asteroid's approach.</p>

<p>The space rock is likely to return towards the orbit of Earth in 2026, however, scientists have ruled out any threat to Earth even during its return.</p>

<p>Earlier an asteroid of similar size named, 2023 DW, was predicted to have a one-in-432 chance of crashing on Earth's surface on Valentine's Day 2046.</p>

<p>Moissl said that 2023 DW is likely to miss Earth by around 4.3 million km. However, even if such a massive asteroid is heading towards the Earth, the planet is no longer defenceless.</p>

<p>In 2022, a pyramid-sized asteroid Dimorphos was deliberately slammed by NASA's Dart (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft.</p>

<p>Before the impact of Dart, Dimorphos took 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit around Didymos, its larger parent asteroid.</p>

<p>While asteroids flying by Earth are common, NASA said that the one approaching the planet is so big that it is rare for a space rock of such size to come so close. They said that such a phenomenon happens only once a decade.</p>

<p>The asteroid, named 2023 DZ2, was first discovered in late February 2023 by astronomers at the observatory of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Spain.</p>

<p>Scientists estimate its size somewhere between 130 feet and 300 feet (40 metres and 90 metres) in diameter. It’s part of the Apollo family of asteroids.</p>

<p>On Saturday, 2023 DZ2 will pass within 515,000 kilometres (320,000 miles) of the Moon and, several hours later, it will hover over the Indian Ocean at about 28,000 kph (17,500 mph).</p>

<p>“There is no chance of this ‘city killer’ striking the Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations,” the European Space Agency’s planetary defence chief Richard Moissl said in a statement.</p>

<p>For astronomers with the International Asteroid Warning Network, this chance encounter with the “city killer” asteroid will provide valuable information on how to deal with them in the future, NASA said in a tweet.</p>

<p>NASA has prepared the Virtual Telescope Project to provide a live webcast of the close approach of the asteroid, which won’t enter our orbit until 2026.<br />

<p>Level 1 is indicative of the fact that the chances of an asteroid colliding with the earth are “extremely unlikely with no cause for public attention or public concern,” the Centre for Near Earth Object Studies stated.</p>

<p>“New telescopic observations very likely will lead to re-assignment to Level 0,” it added.</p>

<p>Analysis of samples collected from asteroid Ryugu has revealed that the asteroid is rich in organic molecules that can form the building blocks of life! These samples were collected by Hayabusa2, a Japanese asteroid-sampling spacecraft. The spacecraft was launched in 2014 by Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). On June 27, 2018, the spacecraft approached Ryugu and started collecting samples. Hayabusa 2 returned to Earth in 2020.</p>

<p>Scientists have discovered that asteroid Ryugu has what are called 'prebiotic organics' that included several amino acids which are used by living organisms to build proteins that form hair and muscles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, the amino acid results from Ryugu are mostly consistent with what has been seen in certain types of carbon-rich (carbonaceous) meteorites that have been exposed to the most water in space," research co-author and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center scientist, Jason Dworkin, as quoted by Space.com.</p>

<p>"The presence of prebiotic molecules on the asteroid surface despite its harsh environment caused by solar heating and ultraviolet irradiation, as well as cosmic-ray irradiation under high-vacuum conditions, suggests that the uppermost surface grains of Ryugu have the potential to protect organic molecules," research lead author and Kyushu University researcher Hiroshi Naraoka, said in a statement.</p>

<p>So Ryugu has chemicals that make hair and muscles. Does this mean that there is some hunky alien skulking on the space rock? Well, no evidence of that yet.</p>

<p>But if life-building molecules were brought to Earth from elsewhere in space, that makes US aliens on Earth right? OMG!&nbsp;</p>

Asteroid Ryugu has life-building organic molecules, say scientists

<p>Scientists at the United States-based NASA have found “one of the most elongated asteroids” ever pictured by their planetary radar. The space agency said that the asteroid flew past Earth at a safe distance, earlier this month, but what caught their attention was the odd shape which they described as oblong. The asteroid was being closely tracked by the scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, US who made “invaluable observations to help determine its size, rotation, surface details, and, most notably, shape,” said the space agency in a press release.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The asteroid in question is called 2011 AG5 whose close approach on February 3 gave scientists the opportunity to get a detailed look at the celestial object first discovered in 2011. The asteroid is said to be 1600 feet long and about 500 feet wide and its dimensions are comparable to the Empire State Building. The celestial object was seen by the powerful 230-foot (70-metre) Goldstone Solar System Radar antenna dish at the Deep Space Network's facility near Barstow, California, revealing the dimensions of this extremely elongated asteroid, said NASA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The principal scientist at JPL who helped lead the observations, Lance Benner noted that there have been 1,040 near-Earth objects observed by planetary radar out of which 2011 AG5 has been “one of the most elongated we’ve seen”. The observations which took place at the end of last month and ended on February 4 also noted other details like a large, broad concavity in one of the asteroid’s two hemispheres and would appear as dark as charcoal if it were to be viewed by the human eye.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The observations also confirmed 2011 AG5 has a slow rotation rate, taking nine hours to fully rotate,” said NASA. The space agency also confirmed that since the radar provides precise distance measurements, they believe that asteroid 2011 AG5 orbits the Sun once every 621 days. Earth will not have a close encounter with it until 2040 and even then it will pass at a distance of about 670,000 miles (1.1 million kilometres), it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Interestingly, shortly after its discovery, 2011 AG5 became a poster-child asteroid when our analysis showed it had a small chance of a future impact,” said Paul Chodas, the director of NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at JPL. He added, “Continued observations of this object ruled out any chance of impact, and these new ranging measurements by the planetary radar team will further refine exactly where it will be far into the future.”<br />

NASA team spots a 1600-foot oddly shaped asteroid as big as Empire State Building

<p>A small asteroid measuring about three feet entered the Earth's atmosphere and was seen lighting up the sky above the English Channel. &nbsp;The meteorite was seen in the sky around 03:00 GMT (8:30 am IST) creating a shooting star effect.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Currently known as Sar2667, the small asteroid exploded after it entered the Earth. It was visible from across Southern England, Wales all the way to Paris, BBC reported.&nbsp;</p>

A small asteroid entered the Earth's atmosphere. The meteor was seen lighting up the sky above the English Channel of the Atlantic Ocean. The 1m (3ft) meteoroid was seen shortly before 03:00 GMT on the morning of 13th Feb.

Simon Green and John Davies identified 3200 Phaethon on photos taken by the IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite) on October 11, 1983. In 1985, it was awarded the asteroid designation 3200 Phaethon after being given the naming 1983 TB. Fred Whipple stated that this asteroid had the same orbit as the Geminid meteor shower. This was extremely unique, as an asteroid has never previously been proposed as the cause of a meteor shower. It's still unclear how debris from the asteroid's surface or interior ends up in the meteoroid stream.</p>

<p><strong>Why in mid-December?&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>3200 Phaethon first comes near the sun. The distance is half the distance between the sun and the innermost planet, Mercury. Then it zooms out past Mars' orbit. On its inbound leg, the meteor material contacts the earth's orbit, and the earth arrives at this spot every mid-December, hence the Geminid meteor shower.</p>

<p><strong>The Moon connection</strong></p>

<p>This year a declining gibbous moon will be visible above the horizon during optimal viewing hours. On the evenings of December 13 and 14, one alternative is to watch by moonlight. Also, because the moon rises soon before midnight on both December 13 and 14, keep an eye out in the evening before the moon rises. Geminid meteors are bright, white, and fast. The brightest ones will outshine the moonlight. The final quarter moon of 2022 occurs on December 16. So, in 2022, a dazzling waning gibbous moon will rise in the midst of the Geminids' peak.</p>

<p><strong>When to watch?</strong></p>

<p><meta name="uuid" content="uuidwSU97jjHczle" /><meta charset="utf-8" />NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft that deliberately crashed into an asteroid managed to change the orbit of the space rock, NASA said on Tuesday, announcing the results of the test.</p>

<p>"Analysis of data obtained over the past two weeks by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) investigation team shows the spacecraft's kinetic impact with its target asteroid, Dimorphos, successfully altered the asteroid’s orbit," said the premier space agency in a statement.</p>

<p>NASA also released a series of satellite-acquired images, radar images amongst other indicators to show that the harmless asteroid, millions of miles away from the Earth was slotted away from its original orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added that the orbital period of the asteroid was shortened by 32 minutes which was a stellar success as scientists had predicted the impact to shorten the orbital path by 10 minutes. Even a change of 73 seconds would have been considered a success.</p>

<p>"Prior to DART’s impact, it took Dimorphos 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit its larger parent asteroid, Didymos," said NASA, adding the impact shortened the&nbsp;"11 hour and 55-minute orbit to 11 hours and 23 minutes."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, NASA chief Bill Nelson termed the entire mission a watershed moment for the planet.</p>

<p>"This is a watershed moment for planetary defense and a watershed moment for humanity. It felt like a movie plot, but this was not Hollywood."</p>

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft that deliberately crashed into an asteroid managed to change the orbit of the space rock, NASA said on Tuesday, announcing the results of the test. "Analysis of data obtained over the past two weeks by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) investigation team shows the spacecraft's kinetic impact with its target asteroid, Dimorphos, successfully altered the asteroid’s orbit," said the premier space agency in a statement. NASA also released a series of satellite-acquired images, radar images amongst other indicators to show that the harmless asteroid, millions of miles away from the Earth was slotted away from its original orbit. Even a change of 73 seconds would have been considered a success. "Prior to DART’s impact, it took Dimorphos 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit its larger parent asteroid, Didymos," said NASA, adding the impact shortened the "11 hour and 55-minute orbit to 11 hours and 23 minutes." Meanwhile, NASA chief Bill Nelson termed the entire mission a watershed moment for the planet. "This is a watershed moment for planetary defense and a watershed moment for humanity. It felt like a movie plot, but this was not Hollywood." According to a joint statement from the European Space Agency, James Webb and Hubble, an image taken by James Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) four hours after impact shows "plumes of material appearing as wisps streaming away from the centre of where the impact took place". <p>The image was taken two days after the collision, by astronomers in Chile using the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR). Reportedly, the comet-like trail goes on for more than 10,000 km and it is expected to get longer before it disperses completely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is amazing how clearly we were able to capture the structure and extent of the aftermath in the days following the impact,” said astronomer Teddy Kareta, one of many involved in the observation from the Lowell Observatory.</p>

<p>According to Michael Knight, from the US Naval Research Laboratory, the trail of debris would be monitored in the upcoming weeks and months. He added, "Now begins the next phase of work for the DART team as they analyse their data and observations by our team and other observers around the world who shared in studying this exciting event."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists will determine whether the mission was successful by observing the changes to the orbit of the 160-metre asteroid that was crashed by the DART probe and was named, Dimorphos, around another asteroid Didymos. The telescopes on Earth will keep an exact measure of the two-rock or binary system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists from the University of Michigan came to the conclusion after analysing cores from over 100 sites globally and creating digital models of the monstrous waves after the impact of the asteroid— named the Chicxulub impactor — in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, reports ScienceAlert.</p>

<p>The digital simulation run by the scientists modelled the asteroid as a 14-kilometres-wide (8.7 miles) body travelling at 43,000 kph (27,000 mph).</p>

<p>The energy of the asteroid impact was found to be at least 100,000 times larger than the Tonga volcanic eruption earlier this year.</p>

<p>And the tsunami impact was estimated up to 30,000 times more intense than the December 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami, one of the largest on record, that killed more than 230,000 people.</p>

<p>“This tsunami was strong enough to disturb and erode sediments in ocean basins halfway around the globe," study lead author Molly Range, who conducted the modelling study for a master's thesis in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan, said in a statement.</p>

<p>The research, which was previously presented at the 2019 American Geophysical Union's annual meeting, was published online on Tuesday in the AGU Advances journal.</p>

<p>But, no worries, as the US space agency is planning to alter its course away from the Earth with its $330 million Dart robot spacecraft.</p>

<p>The spacecraft, which weighs around half-tonne, will be travelling at more than four miles (6.4 km) per second to collide with Dimorphos, which will be about 6.8 million miles (10.9 million km) from Earth at the time of impact.</p>

<p>DART, which has been designed to operate fully autonomously, will be unmanned for the mission.</p>

<p>Though the scientists have deemed the asteroid to be of “no threat”, the main aim of launching this mission is to demonstrate its capability in preventing any potential asteroid Armageddon.</p>

<p>They say that observations of the Dart spacecraft’s impact on Dimorphos’s orbit will provide crucial data about how well spacecraft can protect Earth from asteroid attack.</p>

<p>Lindley Johnson, the director of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, said the DART mission does not reflect a change in the policy of the space agency’s thinking about hazardous objects, rather a continuation of the work done so far.</p>

<p>"Our charter from the beginning has been not only to find asteroids, but to work on the technology and techniques that can be used to deflect an asteroid from an impact trajectory, should we ever find one," he told Space.com.</p>

<p>"DART is just a first test in what we see as an ongoing programme.”</p>

<p>The Italian Space Agency satellite called the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids will record the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.</p>

<p>Following this,&nbsp;the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2024 will send its Hera spacecraft on a two-year journey to examine the aftermath of the collision.</p>

<p>"By the time Hera reaches Didymos, in 2026, Dimorphos will have achieved historic significance: the first object in the Solar System to have its orbit shifted by human effort in a measurable way,” the ESA said.</p>

Water found in asteroid dust hints life on Earth could have come from outer space

<p>An asteroid moving five times as fast as a hypersonic missile is set to fly by extremely close to the Earth on Wednesday, according to NASA's asteroid tracker. Reportedly, two asteroids are set to pass the Earth on the day. The two asteroids have been named 2022 SA1 and 2022 SR2, according to the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).</p>

<p>NASA says that asteroid 2022 SR2, between 6.9 metres and 15 metres in diameter, is flying at a speed of around 21.78 kilometres per second, or 78,408 kilometres per hour. This is roughly equal to nearly 63.5 times the speed of sound.</p>
