Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani has conveyed that their body is not in favour of conducting the Asia Cup T20 in the year 2021. Mani has already told the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise owners of PCB not being in favour of the Asia Cup, scheduled to be held later this year.

According to PTI, a PCB source has said that Mani conveyed the message to PSL franchise owners during a virtual meeting on Thursday soon after it was officially announced that the remaining matches of postponed PSL 6 would be played in June.

Mani cleared the air to PSL franchises after the owners sought to know whether the dates were clashing with the Asia Cup T20.

Pakistan Cricket Board not in favour of playing Asia Cup in 2021

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Asia Cup 2020 was one of the biggest cricket events to have taken a hit as it got postponed. While Pakistan was scheduled to host the 2020 edition of the Asia Cup, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO Wasim Khan has said that Sri Lanka will host the Asia Cup 2021 with Pakistan hosting the 2022 edition of the event.

The PCB CEO said that Sri Lanka has the rights to host the 2021 Asia Cup. The Asia Cup 2020 was ultimately postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic after several talks on venue and schedule changes.

"The next Asia Cup will be hosted in Sri Lanka in June and we have got hosting rights now for the 2022 Asia Cup," PCB CEO Wasim Khan was quoted as saying by the PTI.

The PCB has been working to get back international teams to Pakistan for bilateral series as international cricket resumes in the country. The likes of Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have visited Pakistan to play cricket in the last 12 months with Australia also scheduled to play there soon.

Not Pakistan but Sri Lanka to host Asia Cup 2021: PCB CEO Wasim Khan

A bilateral series between India and Pakistan could be helpful for international cricket, Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said while reflecting on the current health of international cricket. However, Mani said that the PCB doesn’t take India-Pakistan bilateral series into account while planning their schedule.

Notably, India and Pakistan have not held any bilateral series due to sour diplomatic relationship but both the arch-rivals continue to lock horns in International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) events. The last time both the team met was in the ICC World Cup 2019, where the Men in Blue continued their winning run against Pakistan in 50-over World Cup.

'Pakistan-India matches are...' - PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani opines on Indo-Pak bilateral cricket series

India are hoping to use the Asian Cup as a key building block towards realising a dream of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup finals but doubts remain over the quality of the side ahead of next month's continental showpiece in the United Arab Emirates.

India has a population of 1.3 billion but the nation's obsession with and success on the cricket pitch has left it a massive underachiever on the football field.

The national side is 97th in the FIFA rankings and yet to play at a World Cup, but All India Football Federation president Praful Patel is confident their fourth Asian Cup appearance will prove to be a vital stepping stone.

"The... dream needs to be achieved by 2026 as there will be eight teams from Asia in the FIFA World Cup," Patel told reporters last week, adding the team would just not be looking to make it out of the group stage in the UAE.

"You just always cannot live a dream and we have to make the Asian dream a reality."

India's qualification for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar was more a case of coming in through the back door when the country advanced by winning the AFC Challenge Cup, a tournament for the lowest ranked nations in the continent.

That was their first appearance since 1984 and while they remain the dominant force in South Asia, India are still a long way behind regional powerhouses Japan, Australia, South Korea, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

They failed to qualify for the 2015 Asian Cup and the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) decision to increase the number of finalists from 16 teams to 24 has helped the country return to the tournament.

India, managed by English coach Stephen Constantine, have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Thailand for the Jan. 5-Feb. 1 tournament.

"The Asian Cup is a massive tournament for India and everyone involved in the sport," Constantine said. "We have three games from Jan. 6-14 and I am focusing on them.

"We will take one game at a time and we have scouted Thailand intensively to the point that we have watched them three-four times for analysis."

Sunil Chhetri is the only surviving member of the 2011 team who lost all three group games in Qatar and his tally of 65 goals from 103 international matches since his 2005 debut makes him India's most prolific striker.

Comparing the preparation of the current squad with the one that played in the tournament eight years ago, Chhetri said the 2011 team were together for six months while the current crop have been busy playing for their clubs in domestic leagues.

A 28-member squad left India for Abu Dhabi on Dec. 20 to prepare for the quadrennial tournament and played one friendly against Oman on Thursday, a 0-0 draw, while other Asian sides have warmed up with a string of matches.

Since their last appearance at the finals in 2011, India have only played two matches against a top-six Asian side when they were grouped with Iran for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, losing both ties without scoring a goal.

"We have two weeks there in Abu Dhabi to get acclimatised. As far as preparation is concerned, it's okay," Constantine added. "I think we could have had a few more games but that was not for lack of trying.

"We sent letters to 25-30 different nations asking for game. We wanted to play against teams in Asian Cup. We've tried the best we can."

Asian Cup 2019: India sees it as stepping stone towards future dream

India will be a difficult team to beat in the Asian Cup football tournament starting Saturday, especially after their recent draws against more fancied China and Oman, said talismanic captain Sunil Chhetri.

The Asian Cup, the continent's showpiece event, will be played in four cities of the United Arab Emirates from January 5 to February 1.

India have been clubbed in Group A along side Thailand, Bahrain and hosts UAE. They play their first match on Sunday against Thailand here, followed by games against UAE (Abu Dhabi) and Bahrain (Sharjah) on January 10 and 14 respectively.

Ranked 15th in Asia, India played against three quality sides -- China, Oman and Jordan -- in their build-up to the Asian Cup. The Stephen Constantine-coached side drew goal-less against China and Oman and lost to Jordan 1-2.

China (76th) and Oman (82nd) are ranked higher than India (97th) while Jordan are below a few rungs down at 109th.

"I can assure you that it won't be an easy job for other teams to face us. We are a team who hate to lose, and we have proven it in recent times. We are working as per the plan," Chhetri was quoted as saying by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) website.

"All of us are super excited and thrilled right now. Apart from me and Gurpreet (Singh Sandhu), it's a first-time experience for all else. Everyone is ready to grab this opportunity (of playing in the Asian Cup)," said the skipper, who is set to become the only Indian to feature in two Asian Cup tournaments.

The 34-year-old Chhetri was part of the Indian team that featured in the 2011 edition in Doha where the country lost all their group matches -- against Australia, South Korea and Bahrain. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was in the 2011 squad but did not play any match.

Chhetri, the highest Indian scorer in international football with 65 goals, said his team was focussing solely on the match against Thailand and not looking beyond that.

"At the moment, our sole focus is on our opening fixture -- the game against Thailand. We are not looking anything beyond that. Yeah, there are matches against UAE and Bahrain lined up but we will think about them only when they come.

"At the moment we know that Thailand will be a very tough opponent and we are concentrating only on them," he said.

Chhetri is set to equal former captain Bhaichung Bhutia's record of all time India appearances during the Asia Cup. He has played 104 international matches so far, only three shy of his 'mentor' Bhutia's record of 107 games.

But, Chhetri said he had never played for records.

"It feels good when I get a record under my name. But I don't keep track of records. After 10 seconds, I just forget it. I never take any pressure of chasing any record," he said.

"I never ever dreamt that I would play more than 100 games for India or score 60-odd goals," Chhetri said.

Talking about Bhutia, Chhetri said, "I have always been a big fan of Bhaichung bhai. Tell me who isn't? I have learnt so many things from him. He has always been a huge support."

Sunil Chhetri says India will be difficult to beat in Asian Cup

India's U-19 team Sunday followed the footsteps of their seniors to win the U-19 Asia Cup title with a crushing 144-run win against Sri Lanka in the final with Delhi boys Ayush Badoni and Harsh Tyagi playing prominent roles.

Just a week back, the senior team beat Bangladesh in a closely fought final in Dubai to emerge as continental champions.

Runaway favourites, India outplayed Sri Lanka in all departments by first scoring an imposing 303 for six at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium after skipper Prabh Simran Singh won the toss and elected to bat.

All the Indian batsmen contributed with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (85 off 113 balls) and Anuj Rawat (57 off 79 balls) creating solid foundation with a 121-run stand.

However, the highlight of the Indian innings was Badoni's blistering unbeaten knock of 52 off 28 balls which included five sixes and two fours. Along with skipper Prabh Simran (65 no off 37 balls), Badoni added 110 runs in 9.1 overs to literally bat Sri Lanka out of the match.

The island nation were never in the chase as they were all out for 160 in 38.4 overs losing wickets at regular intervals with left-arm spinner Harsh Tyagi's registering brilliant figures of 6 for 38 in 10 overs.

He flighted a few and fired a few down the channel in what was his best performance at the U-19 level till date.

India did have one tough match against Bangladesh in the semi-final which they won by two runs.

"I couldn't play today but I am very happy that my team won," India's regular captain Pavan Shah said in company of his deputy and stand-in skipper Prabh Simran.

Man of the match Tyagi, who bowled a disciplined line said: "The instruction was to bowl at one spot after doing a video analysis of the Sri Lanka team. The wicket also assisted the spinners."

It was left-hander Jaiswal, who hit some flowing drives including a pulled six over deep mid-wicket off left-arm spinner Dushith Wellalage.

For his consistency (318 runs in the tournament), Jaiswal was adjudged man-of-the-tournament.

The Lankans used five spinners -- three off-breaks and two left-arm spinners but all of them were slow through the air giving batsmen enough time to go on the back-foot.

Indian batting's most entertaining part was the death overs when Badoni and Prabh Simran brutally assaulted the opposition spinners.

In an over from left-arm spinner Shashika Dulshan, Badoni hit four sixes with a couple of them landing in stands.

A product of Delhi's famous Sonnet Club, his technique against spinners was impressive and like his 'senior' Rishabh Pant, he loves the slog hit over cow corner.

Indian Cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri finally cleared the air why captain Virat Kohli was rested from the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2018.

Kohli, who was presented with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, missed the tournament which included two games against arch-rivals Pakistan.

The right-handed batsman was not the only one who was criticised for his decision but coach Shastri was also at the receiving end.

Speaking to a national daily days after India registered a three-wicket win over Bangladesh to become the Asian Champion for the seventh time, Shatri said, "Virat needed this rest. Physically he is a bull. You can't give him out of the ground. And the thing with Virat is if he plays, then you know the level of intensity he brings. So it was a case of just mental fatigue, giving him a break, take your mind off cricket and then come back fresh".

The coach stressed that the same process will be followed for other players also.

"And we will have to do it with a lot of other players. You know like Bumah (Jasprit Bumrah), Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar), we have to sustain them and keep them energetic", he added.

Kohli will return to international action as skipper with the Test series against West Indies.

He will lead the 15-member Indian cricket team for the upcoming two-match Test series beginning on October 4 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot.

However, Asia Cup performers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have not been included in the squad.

Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal have been inducted while pacers Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar have been rested.

Hanuma Vihari, who also impressed on debut in the final Test at The Oval, London, also found a place in India's 15-man squad.

His record as stand-in captain has been quite impressive and Rohit Sharma today made it clear that whenever the opportunity comes along, he would be "ready" for full-time captaincy.

Under Rohit, India have won two close multi-nation tournaments -- the T20 tri-nation in Sri Lanka and now the Asia Cup 50-over tournament.

A three-time IPL winning captain of Mumbai Indians, Rohit was asked if he is ready for a long-term leadership role in future.

"Definitely. We have just won so I will surely be ready (for captaincy). Whenever the opportunity comes, I will be ready," a smiling Rohit told reporters after India' Asia Cup triumph.

There are challenges of a stand-in captain, Rohit admitted, adding that the main objective is to allow players to play freely without thinking about their places in the team.

"It's a challenge for any team when few of your senior players are rested. Obviously they will make a comeback and few of the guys have to miss out. Every team is doing that and also guys understand that.

"It's up to them whenever they get an opportunity they make it big and make it count but for us -- myself as a captain and our coach, we have to make sure that they have the liberty to go out and play their game without feeling any pressure," said Rohit.

"I understand the dynamics of this team, how we play our cricket and how we want to go forward as a team. I think in this tournament we have ticked all the boxes," Rohit looked satisfied after accomplishing his task.

Rohit made it clear that his philosophy of leadership is to help players shed insecurities while playing for the country. He in fact assured the likes of Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik that they will be playing all games.

"When we came here, I wanted to give them the assurance that they will be playing all games. That's how you make players. If you know after two games you are going to get dropped, it's not easy for any player.

"I wanted to give everybody a fair run and play more games. That's how you understand a player's capabilities. One odd game, you can't judge a player," said Rohit
He agreed that No's 4 and 6 are still not settled and the picture would be clearer closer to the World Cup.

"Numbers four and six need to get more games as the World Cup comes closer. Right now is not the time. Come the World Cup, we will get a clearer picture. The next few tournaments, that will be ideal for us to judge as management where they stand as players.

Rohit was more happy with the fact that a young team achieved so much.

"It was very young team that we brought here. Not many boys had the experience of playing in these conditions. It was hot. It wasn't easy for the boys to adapt because they had come from England. It was very important to get used to the conditions.

"But I think overall, our preparation for this tournament was good. Seven-eight guys came here early while the other boys from England landed here a day before the tournament," said the skipper.

Fitness was an issue in gruelling conditions, admitted Rohit.

"The message was to focus on the fitness because we haven't played in conditions like this before. I think this was a big challenge for us. The conditions here were quite slow and there was help for the slow bowlers.

The skipper also praised his spinners for their consistent show.

"Even today, if you see, the way Bangladesh started in the first 10-15 overs and after that the way our spinners brought us back in the game. Our spinners' performance in the last six-eight months has been consistent. It's been a positive sign."

Injuries continue to haunt all-rounder Kedar Jadhav as he is again down with a hamstring strain suffered while batting during India's successful chase in the final of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh here.

Jadhav, who returned to the Indian team after being out of action for almost three months nursing a hamstring injury, experienced the problem once again in the final of the Asia Cup as he tried to steal a quick single after hitting the ball to mid-off.

He was looked into by the physio Patrick Farhart and decided to continue batting before he went off soon after.

But with the team needing his services while chasing a 223-run target, a limping Jadhav returned to the crease and ran the most defining single of his short international career as India beat Bangladesh by three wickets to win their seventh Asia Cup title in a pulsating last-ball finish late Friday night.

"Kedar suffered a right hamstring strain which is the other leg from his previous problem. Scans will be done and update on the same will be given in a few days," a BCCI official said.

Earlier Jadhav, who had been a regular in India's ODI team, suffered a grade 2 hamstring tear in the opening game of the 2018 IPL and was ruled out for the entire season and India's subsequent tour of Ireland and England.

"It's at least Grade I or II tear. Let's see tomorrow," Jadhav said after guiding India home.

Kedar Jadhav down with hamstring problem

A severely hamstrung Kedar Jadhav ran the most defining single of his short international career as India beat Bangladesh by three wickets to win their seventh Asia Cup title in a pulsating last-ball finish.

Chasing a modest target of 222, India made a rough weather of the chase at 160 for five with Jadhav (23 no) initially retiring after pulling his right hamstring only to come back when it mattered the most.

He came in the 48th over with India still needing 11 runs. With six runs needed off the last over, Jadhav and Kuldeep Yadav kept their cool against Mahmudullah Riyadh taking three singles and double off the first five balls.

The part-time off-spinner drifted the final delivery onto Jadhav's legs as it brushed his pads for a leg bye to ensure India maintained its supremacy among continental neighbours.

The win also establishes Rohit Sharma's leadership skills having won the Nidahas T20 tri-nation earlier and now the Asia Cup while providing a healing touch after the Test series drubbing in England.

Buvneshwar Kumar (21) and Ravindra Jadeja (23) also played their part after middle-order led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni once again failed to perform.

It was Bhuvneshwar's six off Rubel Hossain in the 46th over followed by a boundary off Mustafizur Rahman in the 47th that eased the pressure put due to the balls consumed by the former India skipper.

India started the chase with Shikhar Dhawan (15) and Rohit Sharma (48, 55 balls) helping themselves to a boundary each off Mehidy Hasan Miraz's off-break. However tournament's top scorer Dhawan couldn't clear the mid-off fielder trying to hoist left-arm spinner, Nazmul Islam.

Ambati Rayudu, who ha not performed against the top teams failed again making it 46 for 2.

In-form skipper Rohit continued from where he had left against Pakistan as he lofted Nazmul for a six over long-on. A short-arm pull off Mustafizur Rahman and a hook off

Rubel Hossain also got him two more sixes India were cruising along at 83 for two.

It was another short ball from Rubel that Rohit tried to pull but found the fielder at the square leg boundary.

Dinesh Karthik (37) hit a six but looked edgy during his 61 ball stay before being yorked when Mahmudullah Riyadh rifled one in after 54-run stand with Dhoni (36, 67 balls).

Dhoni is a shadow of his old self and consumed a lot of balls, hitting three boundaries in between. However, Kedar Jadhav (19, 20 balls) hit a straight six off Mahmudullah but then pulled his right hamstring going for a quick single.

He was in considerable pain after that and Dhoni who was just getting into the groove lost his rhythm and edged one off Mustafizur Rahman to Mushfiqur Rahim behind the stumps.

Once Dhoni was gone, things became troublesome for India at 160 for five as Kedar continued to hobble.

He was finally instructed to get off the field as his presence was hampering the other batsmen from taking quick singles or twos.

Earlier, India's unorthodox spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Kedar Jadhav wreaked havoc after opener Liton Das's fine hundred as Bangladesh were bowled out for a modest 222 after being put in to bat.

An injury-ravaged Bangladesh made a flying start, courtesy Liton's maiden ODI hundred (121 off 117 balls), as he added 120 runs with fellow opener Mehidy Hasan Miraz (32).

Just when it looked like Bangladesh would make a match of it, things went downhill as India's tiny neighbours suffered an all-too-familiar batting collapse, losing 10 wickets for 102 runs. The innings lasted 48.3 overs.

Chinaman Kuldeep's 3 for 45 was well complemented by Kedar's 2/41 in nine overs of unconventional off-breaks, as Bangladesh frittered away the initiative with poor shot selection.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's smart work behind the stumps also played its part as much as Ravindra Jadeja's electric fielding inside the 30-yard circle.

Promoting lower-order batsman Miraz as opener was a masterstroke by skipper Mashrafe Mortaza, who wanted to preserve his regular opener Imrul Kayes and Soumya Sarkar.

Miraz did his job perfectly by dropping anchor as Liton hit a flurry of boundaries off Jasprit Bumrah (1/39) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Anything on his legs was dispatched to the boundary.

When Yuzvendra Chahal (1/31 in 8 overs) was introduced, he was hit over deep mid-wicket for a six, as India found it difficult to get a breakthrough.

However, things changed once Miraz was caught by Ambati Rayudu in the cover region off Kedar's bowling.

The moment Kedar started bowling his side-arm off-breaks, Bangladesh couldn't force the pace as he mixed his deliveries well. He bowled an impressive 28 dot balls.

Imrul Kayes (2) was adjudged leg-before off Chahal and the in-form Mushfiqur Rahim (2) pulled a rank half-tracker from Kedar straight into the deep midwicket's hands.

From 120 for no loss, Bangladesh slumped to 137 for three and things went from bad to worse from thereon.

Defending champions India beat Bangladesh in last ball thriller to win 7th Asia Cup title

Rohit Sharma said he has imbibed the ability to remain calm under pressure from none other than former captain MS Dhoni.

"He never panicked, took time while taking decisions. There are those similarities in me too," said Rohit while adrre4sing the media after winning the 2018 Asia Cup in the last-ball thriller against Bangladesh on Friday.

Dhoni has been facing the criticism for his slow game and he might be dwindling rapidly, while coach Ravi Shastri has praised Rohit's calm demeanour during their victorious Asia Cup campaign, a trait that he has picked up from his illustrious predecessor.

"Whatever I have seen of him (Dhoni) leading the side for all these years, he never panicked, took time while taking decisions. There are those similarities in me too," skipper Rohit told media persons today.

"Look, we always learn from (MS) Dhoni because he has been such a good captain.

"Whenever we encountered a problem or a question on the field, he was always there with an answer. What I have observed, him captaining the team over the years, is that he never panics, takes a few seconds before taking a decision, thinks about it then decides…so there is that similarity..I think I also have that. I also try to think and then react," said Rohit Sharma.

The stylish Mumbaikar spoke about qualities in Dhoni that he has tried to inculcate.

"I also try to first think and then react. Yes, 50-over cricket gives you time but still you need to take time as well. I have learnt this from seeing him, we have played for so many years under his captaincy. Whenever there is something, he is ready with advice."

Dhoni didn't exactly set the Asia Cup on fire with his batting but his smart glovework and strategic interventions were for everyone to see.

"We always keep on learning from Dhoni bhai because he has been such a great captain. Whenever there were questions or doubts on the field, he was always there to answer," Rohit signed off.

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza called on his players to ignore the absence of veteran stars Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan when they face defending champions India in Friday's Asia Cup final.

Bangladesh upset Pakistan by 37 runs in the last Super Four match in Abu Dhabi to book a place in the final for just the second time.

Without their established opener Tamim (fractured wrist) - injured after the first game - and world-class all-rounder Shakib (fractured finger), the Tigers will pin their hopes on younger players to shock the six-time champions.

"It will be tough without Tamim and Shakib," admitted Mortaza on Thursday.

"The good thing is that the boys have fought very hard so I hope they fight till the last ball and give us a win which will inspire the whole nation."

With their powerful batting line up, led by skipper Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, India start as favourites. They thrashed arch-rivals Pakistan in two matches to get closer to another title.

Sharma has notched a hundred and two half-centuries while Dhawan has two hundreds in the tournament, a factor Mashrafe feels makes them favourites.

"India are far better team (than us)," said Mashrafe. "They are coming here as the favourites so we have to be mentally strong and fight till the last ball."

Bangladesh have beaten India in only five of 34 one-day internationals but one of them came in the 2012 Asia Cup on their way to the final when they lost to Pakistan by two runs.

India beat Bangladesh in the first Super Four game by seven wickets in Dubai in the current edition.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja grabbed four wickets while pacemen Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshawar Kumar took three wickets apiece to bundle Bangladesh out for a paltry 173.

Sharma, with 83 not out, anchored India's easy win, but Mashrafe hoped Friday will see a different outcome.

"It's just a match, if you have a great day anything can happen. The boys are in good shape so it could be our day," said Mashrafe.

Bangladesh will look to their former captain Mushfiqur Rahim to lift their batting, like he did in the win against Sri Lanka with a battling 144 and against Pakistan when he hit 99.

Left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman is in good wicket-taking form, claiming 4-43 against Pakistan.

"We know they're a competitive side," said Dhawan of Bangladesh. "Hats off to them, the way they played and won against Pakistan. When you play all-round cricket, the results will follow."

Dhawan admitted, however, that many fans had been expecting an India-Pakistan final.

"Everyone thought it will be an India-Pakistan final, but Bangladesh won a great match, we can’t take them lightly just because Pakistan is a bigger team.

"Bangladesh are playing better cricket, there's a difference between team on paper and on the field, that's how I see it."

In the absence of Tamim and Shakib, Bangladesh look to shock India

Twitterati can't decide whether Bangladesh batsman Liton Das was 'out or not out' in the final of 2018 Asia Cup against India.

Liton, who scored 121 off 111, was stumped by MS Dhoni off Kuldeep Yadav after playing a magnificent knock which included 12 fours and two sixes.

It was his maiden century and he looked fearless in front of India's top class pacers and spinners.

The 23-year-old slammed a quick half-century to give a good start to his team also he survived a scare when he was dropped on 52 by Yuzvendra Chahal off Ravindra Jadeja.

Asia Cup final: India restrict Bangladesh to 222

His dismissal was a close call as it was referred to the third umpire Rod Tucker and he reviewed it from the all the angles and signalled it out.

His dismissal started a debate on the social media forums whether Liton was out as per rule or not.

What does the rule say?

As per the rule run out is when the batsmen are going for a run or runs, but fall short of the batting crease when the stumps are broken by the fielding team. The batsman must have some part of his bat or body grounded beyond the crease - on the line would be out.

Under law 38. 2 (a), "a batsman is not run out if he has been within his ground and has subsequently left it to avoid injury when the wicket is put down."

So that means a batsman cannot be run out when taking evasive action from a throw if he has not left his crease.

He wanted to have a surgery before the Asia Cup for a complete recovery from the injury, but the BCB insisted on playing him in the key tournament. The all-rounder played the team's first four matches of the tournament. He scored 49 runs and picked up seven wickets. The surgery has all but ruled Shakib out of next month's home series against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe will arrive in Dhaka on October 16 to play three one-day internationals and two Test matches.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl against Bangladesh in the final of the 2018 Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Speaking after the toss, Sharma said, "Going to field first. That's what we've done the whole tournament. Runs on the board is important, but we've done well fielding first throughout the tournament, so I feel like we don't need to change anything. The guys have delivered over course of the tournament, and there's just one last hurdle to cross."

"The guys have come out and delivered and that's the reason I am standing here today. We are ready for it. The whole purpose was to qualify for the final and wait for this wonderful day. We've got to play the same kind of cricket."

"All five guys who missed out in the last game are back for the final. I can understand the feelings of the guys who are missing out after just one game, but we have to go with the demands of the team," he added.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be playing without veteran stars Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan.

Talking about their strategy for today, skipper Mashrafe Mortaza said, "
Credit goes to the boys for the way they stood out in the last few games. Today is another big match butw e have to take the pressure off, play hard, and fight it out till the last ball."

"Mominul is not playing, left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam comes in - we're going with 5 bowlers today. They (India) are the best side for a reason. We have a great chance but there is always the pressure in a final so we're just going out there and looking to win the game," he added.

Experienced batsman Mushfiqur Rahim missed a century by one run while Mohammad Mithun notched a half-century to steer Bangladesh to 239 in their must-win game against Pakistan in the Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Former captain Rahim scored a 116-ball 99 and added an invaluable 144 for the fourth wicket with Mithun (60) to help Bangladesh recover from a shaky 12-3 after they won the toss and opted to bat at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Left-arm paceman Junaid Khan, who replaced Mohammad Amir in the squad, had jolted Bangladesh at the start, dismissing Liton Das (six), Soumya Sarkar (0) and Mominul Haque (five) to reduce them to 12-3.

Junaid finished with 4-19 in his nine incisive overs.

Rahim hit nine boundaries before he was caught behind with just one needed for a second hundred in the tournament, following his 144 against Sri Lanka in the first round.

It was sheer bad luck that he fell in the 42nd over, caught behind off paceman Shaheen Shah who finished with 2-47. Rahim became the first Bangladeshi batsman to be dismissed for 99 in one-day cricket.

Mithun, who added 134 with Rahim against Sri Lanka, hit four boundaries in his 84-ball innings.

The winner of this match will meet defending champions India in Friday's final in Dubai.

Asia cup: Rahim, Mithun lead Bangladesh to 239 in must-win Pakistan clash

Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun made sure to repair the team after Afghanistan lost three early wickets on Wednesday.

Pakistani pacers, who have been out of form in the last few games, on Wednesday struck early to dismisses top three batsmen of Bangladesh in a virtual semi-final clash of the Asia Cup.

Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar and Mominul Haque were sent back to the pavilion on six, zero, and five respectively.

While Das and Sarkar lost their wicket to Junaid Khan, Haque was dismissed by Shaheen Afridi.

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat. The winning team will set up a date with India, who reached the finals after thumping victories against Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Speaking after the toss, Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza said, "We would like to bat first. Looks a good wicket to bat on. Last match we lost many wickets in the middle overs but number 6 and 7 batted so well."

"Hopefully, we get a good start. We have been struggling with the top order but hopefully, we'll do well today. Sarkar comes back into the side. We have quite a few changes. Shanto is not playing, Rubel is back into the side."

"Big loss is that Shakib is not playing as he fractured his finger, hence Mominul comes in. Fans have been supporting us right throughout the tournament," he added.

Pakistan, on the other hand, will not leave a single stone unturned to win the game against Afghanistan and lock horns with India for the third time in finals.

Talking about their strategy for today, Pakistani skipper Sarfraz Ahmed said, "The conditions get different later in the night. But if you have wickets in hand, you can chase whatever the target is. I have asked the batsmen to play positive cricket, hopefully we bat well today."

"They have a good batting line-up. We'll try to get them out early and chase it down later. Junaid Khan comes in for Mohammad Amir," he added.

Teams:

Pakistan (Playing XI): Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed(w/c), Asif Ali, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Hasan Ali, Junaid Khan, Shaheen Afridi

Asia Cup: Rahim, Mithun repair top-order malfunction, Afghanistan 88/3 after 21 overs

Pakistan and Bangladesh will lock horns on Wednesday, in what will be a virtual semi-final, to decide who will meet India in the 2018 Asia Cup finals.

Both the teams have lost comprehensively to India while beating Afghanistan in the Super four stage.

If seen the recent forms, Bangladesh have the winning momentum on their side, having beaten the Afghans in their last game. Imrul Kayes and Mahmudullah did the job with the bat then, and Mustafizur Rahman starred with the ball.

Kayes, who was brought in only in the second half of the tournament as Bangladesh looked for replacements for the injured Tamim Iqbal, impressed in his first outing, hitting an unbeaten 72, while Mahmudullah scored a crucial 74 and, together, they lifted their team from 87/5.

Bangladesh will look to continue their performance in this crunch clash, and a lot will depend on the experienced shoulders of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan.

Pakistan, meanwhile, have their own issues to sort. A sub-par fielding performance in their last outing ensured that India reached the target of 238 earlier than expected and with nine wickets hand.

The start has been a problem for them too, as Fakhar Zaman, one of the lynchpins of this batting line-up, has struggled to get going and has managed scores of 24, 0, 0, and 31 in the tournament so far.

Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, and Sarfraz Ahmed have performed decently. Haq has two half-centuries, Azam has one, and Ahmed enjoyed some batting time in the middle in his last outing, against India, with his patient 44.

It's only Shoaib Malik, who has risen to the occasion and has contributed heavily to the team's cause with 9*, 43, 51* and 78. Pakistan will bank big on their most experienced cricketer.

The bowling also has not looked at its best since their first group-stage match against Hong Kong.

Mohammad Amir hasn't picked up a wicket in the tournament yet while Usman Shinwari and Hasan Ali have been expensive in phases.

Shaheen Afridi has impressed in the two ODIs that he has played. The bowlers will have to strike against a potent Bangladesh middle order to reach the finals.

Probable squad

Bangladesh: Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Shakib Al Hasan (vc), Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Ariful Haque, Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain, Nazmul Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nazmul Islam, Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Abu Hider, Mominul Haque, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes

Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), Fakhar Zaman, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan, Imam ul Haq, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Asif Ali, Haris Sohail, Mohammad Nawaz, Fahim Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Junaid Khan, Usman Shinwari, Shaheen Afridi

Asia Cup: Pakistan-Bangladesh lock horns to set up date with India in finals

Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday captained India for the 200th time in One-day Internationals (ODIs) after a gap of almost two years in their Asia Cup 2018 Super Four clash against Afghanistan.

As expected, the defending champions opted to rest key players like Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, giving Dhoni a chance to lead the Men In Blue.

The wicketkeeper-batsman relinquished the captaincy of India's T20 and ODI sides in January 2017.

On Tuesday, Afghanistan had won the toss and elected to bat against India.

Speaking after the toss, MS Dhoni said this match gave him the opportunity to play it his 200th ODI match as a captain. "I was not really sure of where I am standing. I have captained 199 ODIs, so this gives me an opportunity to make it 200. It's all destiny and I always believed in that. It's not in my control, once I left captaincy. Good to complete 200, but I don't think it really matters," he said.

Dhoni also revealed that India were also looking to bowl first. "We were looking to bowl first. Quite a few changes. Both the openers are missing, Bhuvi, Bumrah and Chahal are also missing. Everybody who hadn't played in this tournament gets a chance."

They are part of the 15 and are representing India. We'll have to keep the intensity up. It is important for them to adjust to the line and length they need to bowl," he added.

India are already in final after wins over Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Asia Cup: MS Dhoni returns as India's captain against Afghanistan

Indian openers have given a terrific start in reply to Pakistan's 237-run target in the Super Four, match 3 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on Sunday.

However, Shoaib Malik struck an attractive half-century to salvage Pakistan's innings. His 90-ball 78 included four boundaries and two sixes.

Opener Fakhar Zaman looked dangerous at a moment but lost his wicket to India's spin sensation Kuldeep Yadav after scoring 31 runs.

After opting to bat, Pakistan lost Imam-ul-Haq (ten), Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam (run out for nine) in an unimpressive start to their innings before Malik and skipper Sarfraz Ahmed added 107 for the fourth wicket.

Jasprit Bumrah finished with 2-29 in his ten overs.

Batsman Dinesh Chandimal has been installed as Sri Lanka captain across all three formats after Angelo Mathews lost his role as skipper of the country's limited-overs teams following their exit from the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

The 31-year-old Mathews was renamed as Sri Lanka's limited-overs skipper in January, six months after the all-rounder relinquished the captaincy for both red and white-ball formats following a home series defeat to Zimbabwe.

Mathews, however, was unable to revive the team's fortunes in his latest stint, which came to an unceremonious end after Sri Lanka crashed out of the ongoing six-nation Asia Cup following first-round defeats by Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

"The National Selectors on Sunday decided to appoint Dinesh Chandimal as the ODI captain to lead the team in the upcoming England series," Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement.

"Accordingly, they have requested Angelo Mathews to relinquish his duties as the National ODI & T20I captain, with immediate effect."

The decision has upset Mathews, who felt he had been made a "scapegoat" and offered to retire from limited-overs cricket, according to ESPNCricinfo http://www.espncricinfo.com, which published the all-rounder's letter to SLC chief executive Ashley de Silva.

"I'm willing to take part of the blame but, at the same time, feel betrayed and let down if the blame is solely put on me," Mathews wrote.

"If the selectors and coach are of the view that I am unfit to play ODI and T20 cricket and thus not entitled for my place in the team, I would also consider retiring from the ODI and T20 formats as I never want to be a burden to the team."

Sri Lanka have been grappling with a leadership crisis over the last 18 months, during which Upul Tharanga, Lasith Malinga, Chamara Kapugedera and Thisara Perera have also been tried as ODI captains.

From Oct. 10, Sri Lanka will host England for five one-day internationals, a one-off Twenty20 and three tests.

Arsenal broke down a determined Everton defence to win 2-0 on Sunday, with second-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang giving the Gunners their fourth straight Premier League victory.

Everton had created most of the early chances as they looked for their first victory at Arsenal since January 1996.

Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin both fired in a number of shots, the Brazilian in particular leaving Gunners defender Hector Bellerin in his wake repeatedly as he turned and darted towards goal. But both were unable to beat Arsenal keeper Petr Cech, who was determined to register his side's first clean sheet of the season.

Late in the half, Everton defender Lucas Digne also went close, whipping in a free kick from just outside the area that Cech deftly tipped back over the bar.

Arsenal by contrast seemed to lack a finishing touch despite having two-thirds of the possession, with striker Lacazette often failing to control the ball when passed to.

The Frenchman found his feet just short of the hour mark, however, running in from the left before elegantly curling the ball into the far corner just beyond the reach of outstretched England keeper Jordan Pickford.

Gabon international Aubameyang doubled the lead two minutes later from what appeared to be an offside position, sending Pickford the wrong way from close range.

"A big thanks to Petr Cech because he took a lot of balls today and we won our first clean sheet," Lacazette told Sky Sports.

The win pushes the Gunners up to sixth in the table with 12 points, six points adrift of leaders Liverpool, while the Toffees stay in 12th place with six points.
