Rohit Sharma-led team India is set to give a tough fight to their arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super Fours clash at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

Previously, India produced a stunning show to defeat Pakistan by eight wickets in the Group match of the same tournament.

After the India-Pak clash, India produced another clinical performance against Bangladesh and marked an easy victory in the opening Super Four match.

India will look to maintain the same momentum while Pakistan will be looking to improve their game after a massive scare against Afghanistan in their previous match which they won in the a last over finish.

The batting line-up of Pakistan especially the opening batsmen have been struggling so far in the series, however, the veteran Shoaib Malik has proved his mettle by playing responsible innings in previous crucial matches. He scored 43 against India and an unbeaten 51 against Afghanistan.

For India, both bowling and batting departments have chipped in to guide the team towards the victory. Special mention to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who made a comeback to the team, also dished out a splendid performance to rip through Bangladesh's batting line-up with a four-wicket haul.

Pakistan will be looking to put aside their disappointing performance against India in the last match and giving the Men in Blue a tough competition.

Here is the playing XI (TBC):

Pakistan's paceman Hasan Ali and Afghanistan's Asghar Afghan and Rashid Khan have all been fined on Saturday for violating the players' code of conduct, the International Cricket Council said Saturday.

Pakistan narrowly beat Afghanistan by three wickets in a highly charged Asia Cup Super Four match in Abu Dhabi on Friday, with Shoaib Malik hitting a six and four in the last over.

"Hasan, and Afghanistan's duo of Asghar and Rashid have all been fined 15 per cent of their match fees. They have also received one demerit point in separate incidents during the match on Friday," the ICC said.

India beat Bangladesh by 7 wickets in Asia Cup Super Four

While India and Pakistan's fierce cricket rivalry has been on display at the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, some families in the country have divided loyalties.

The UAE is home to many cricket-loving cross-border couples from India and Pakistan who find it an easier option than living on the subcontinent, where Pakistanis have trouble getting visas for India, and vice versa.

Cross-border ties have been strained ever since the violence and upheaval that accompanied the creation of modern India and Pakistan at the end of British rule in August 1947.

The two have fought three wars since becoming independent, deepening mistrust and suspicion of each other, while thousands of families remain divided by the border.

Relations further soured after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and cross-border unions are now few and far between.

One rare high-profile example is Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and her husband, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, who have a home in Dubai.

Indian national Kasim Vakkil and his wife Ghazala, from Pakistan, are also part of the UAE's large South Asian community.

"My marriage would not have been possible if we were not living in UAE," Kasim told AFP.

"Ghazala is from Lahore and I am from Mumbai but living at this neutral venue made our marriage possible."

They came together through cricket when Kasim met his future father-in-law at a game between Pakistan and South Africa in the UAE, where Pakistan hosts games owing to the risk of terror attacks on home soil.

"I went to watch a match between Pakistan and South Africa in 2014 where I met Ghazala's father which became the first step towards our proposal," said Kasim, a former college-level fast bowler in Mumbai.

"I would not have imagined watching Pakistani cricketers like Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Amir before my own eyes but it became possible since UAE became a neutral venue for the Pakistan team."

'Double joy'

Ghazala, who works in human resources, said watching India and Pakistan play made her think of home.

India thrashed Pakistan by eight wickets in the group stage and they are set to meet again in the Super Fours on Sunday.

"Now with India and Pakistan playing in UAE for the Asian title it has given us double joy as we get to see players from both the countries which gives us a nostalgic feeling," said Ghazala.

India is playing in the Emirates for the first time since 2006, sparking huge interest among the country's large number of Indian expats.

Club-level cricketer Naveed Siraj hails from Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir, while his wife, Nida, is from the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

"My uncle and aunty lived in Kuwait and Nida's family were their neighbours so they initiated the talk for our marriage," said Naveed.

"UAE is a neutral venue for all the expats from Pakistan and India so everyone lives here in comfort and enjoys everything including cricket."

Dubai taxi driver Sunil Manohar, from India's Karnataka state, married Nunda from Pakistan's Sindh province after their families met in the UAE.

"UAE is a nice place for cross-border families," he said. "In the past, a few couples were stuck in Pakistan because they were not getting an Indian visa."

They were sensible in defending and leaving the balls which moved after pitching outside off stump. They kept the scoreboard ticking with pushing and nudging the ball around.

Breakthrough not coming, Pakistan captain Sarfraz handed the ball back to Nawaz but Asghar creamed off 11 runs from his over, hitting a four and six, to end the long boundary drought.

Asia Cup 2018: Pakistan beat Afghanistan in last over finish

India left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja could not have envisaged a better comeback on his return to international limited-overs cricket, shrugging off a 14-month absence by taking four wickets against Bangladesh in an Asia Cup triumph on Friday.

The 29-year-old is a regular in the Test side, particularly on home soil, but last played a one-dayer against West Indies in July 2017 and had been overlooked for white-ball cricket since.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who topped the world rankings for Test bowlers alongside Jadeja last year, has suffered a similar fate in short-form cricket due to the success of wrist-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

"During my earlier comebacks the gap was never so long. I will always remember this comeback because I returned to the team after a gap of almost 480 days," Jadeja said after being named man of the match following his 4-29 display.

"I was playing only Tests but the last two-three series were away and I was not getting many opportunities. I was telling myself that my job is to perform whenever I get an opportunity.

"That's what is in my control and that's how I was motivating myself. I was thinking how I can improve my game in away conditions."

Jadeja's heroics with the ball helped India restrict Bangladesh to 173 and they chased down the target with 82 balls and seven wickets to spare with stand-in captain Rohit Sharma remaining unbeaten on 83.

With India on a run of overseas Tests in which they generally employ a lone spinner, opportunities had dried up for Jadeja, who is also a brilliant fielder and more-than-capable lower-order batsman.

Late call-up

He was a non-playing member of the touring party for three Tests in South Africa in January, waiting until Afghanistan's inaugural Test against India in June for his next appearance.

Jadeja also warmed the bench in England for the first four Tests before being included in the fifth and final match earlier this month. He made an unbeaten 86 in the first innings and took seven wickets as India lost by 118 runs in a 4-1 series defeat.

He was then a late call-up to the Asia Cup squad after all-rounder Hardik Pandya was injured against Pakistan and left-arm spinner Axar Patel hurt his finger during practice.

"I got confidence from the last Test against England," Jadeja said. "I was playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy (domestic 50-over competition) in Delhi and got a call for the one-dayers.

"I didn't know what was going on here. I was very happy to get a call from the selectors, who asked me to be ready to go to Dubai."

The 50-over World Cup is barely nine months away but Jadeja is not ready to look that far ahead.

"I am not thinking about the World Cup yet. We are going to play a lot of matches before that," he said. "I have to perform the way I did today whenever I get an opportunity."

Late call-up He was a non-playing member of the touring party for three Tests in South Africa in January, waiting until Afghanistan's inaugural Test against India in June for his next appearance. I was very happy to get a call from the selectors, who asked me to be ready to go to Dubai." The 50-over World Cup is barely nine months away but Jadeja is not ready to look that far ahead. "I am not thinking about the World Cup yet. We are going to play a lot of matches before that," he said. "I have to perform the way I did today whenever I get an opportunity."

Hashmatullah Shahidi missed out on a maiden hundred by a mere three runs but still steered Afghanistan to a challenging 257-6 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup at Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Shahidi hit three consecutive boundaries in the final over off Usman Shinwari, but failed to get to three figures off the last delivery after Afghanistan won the toss and batted in the Super Four clash.

Shahidi finished with a brilliantly-paced 118-ball 97 not out, and added 94 for the fourth wicket with his skipper Asghar Afghan, who smashed five sixes and two fours in his 56-ball 67.

But it was Shahidi who held one end against Pakistan's bowling in an innings which featured seven boundaries after left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz (3-57) had put the brakes on Afghanistan's early progress.

Shahidi had added 63 for the third wicket with Rahmat Shah who scored a measured 36.

The total is an improvement by Afghanistan after scoring 249 and 255 in their previous two wins against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Pakistani fielders dropped four catches, three off debutant paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi who finished with 2-38.

India's all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was added in the squad at the place of injured Hardik Pandya, proved to be the most economical bowler for team India.

He took crucial wickets of Mosaddek Hossain, Mohammad Mithun, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan to thrash the batting order.

Pacemen Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-32) and Jasprit Bumrah (3-37) were also ruthless as Bangladeshi batting couldn't get going with tail-ender Mehidy Hasan top-scoring with a 50-ball 42 with two sixes and two boundaries.

Bangladesh, who were bowled out for a mere 119 against Afghanistan on Thursday, were once again off to a disastrous start during which they lost half the side for just 65 runs.

Mushfiqur Rahman, who scored a brilliant hundred against Sri Lanka, managed 21 while star batsman Shakib Al Hasan failed yet again with 17.

It could have been worse had Mehidy not put on a fighting 66-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Mashrafe Mortaza who made 26 with two sixes.

Scorecard:

Fall of wickets: 1-15 (Das), 2-16 (Nazmul), 3-42 (Shakib), 4-60 (Mithun), 5-65 (Rahim), 6-101 (Mahmudullah), 7-101 (Mosaddek), 8-167 (Mortaza), 9-169 (Hasan).

Hockey player returns triumphant from Asia Cup, flat burgled

The Indian women's hockey team did the country proud by clinching the Asia Cup title in Japan on Sunday, but none of its matches was telecast live, unlike the men's Asia Cup last month.

Monika Malik, a player of the victorious team, told ANI, "We are feeling very proud after becoming the champion of Asia. The men hockey team just got the gold medal and now we did it as well."

"However, I am a little disappointed because our matches were not telecast live on television like those of men," she noted.

The player added that the status given to women's hockey team should be at par with its male counterpart, considering their performances in the recent matches.

"We will definitely discuss this matter with our coach that women's hockey team should also be uplifted. Our ranking is also getting better with each passing day. We too deserve the status given to the men team," she said.

Another player asserted that showing their matches live would have resulted in better performance on the field.

"If our matches are also live, more people will see it, more support we will receive, and the better we will perform," she said.

Further, Goalkeeper Savita Punia, who played a major role in India's victory, said that they were hurt about not being live on TV, but they never let it affect their performance.

"Matches like these are the rare chances when the Indian public can get to know how good the Women's hockey team is doing and where do they need improvement. We were hurt by this issue somewhere but it is secondary. We can't take it with us when we are playing in the field. We have to focus on our match at that time," she told ANI.

Asia Cup hockey: India beat Pakistan 3-1, top their pool

Indian women maintained their supremacy in the Asia Cup by beating arch-rivals Pakistan for their sixth title in as many editions here today.

Mithali Raj, who was removed as T20 captain before the start of the tournament, made a statement with an unbeaten 73 to guide India to 121 for five in 20 overs.

The bowlers then bowled brilliantly to limit Pakistan to 104 for six, completing a comprehensive 17-run win. The star with ball once against was left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht, who took two wickets conceding 22 runs in her four overs.

It was the second time that India got the better of Pakistan in the competition, having beaten them by five wickets in the league stage besides remaining unbeaten in five games en route to the final.

It was also a sweet revenge of sorts for India, who had lost to Pakistan during the World T20 at home in March.

Recently, the ICC had docked them six points for not playing Pakistan.

With the memorable win, India also managed to maintain their enviable record in the continental event, having won all the six editions to have taken place so far.

However, the first four editions starting from 2004 were played in the 50 over format and the following two have been in the shortest format. In the last edition held in Guangzhou in 2012, India lifted the trophy after defeating Pakistan in the final.

The champion team could not have repeated the feat if it was not for the superlative efforts from Raj and Bisht.

Raj was instrumental in the team's resounding success, amassing 220 runs in four innings to end as the tournament's highest run scorer in the competition by some distance. Second in the list was Pakistan's Javeria Khan with 128 runs in six innings.

Raj kept calm in both tense games against Pakistan to help the team's cause. Her 73 not out in the final was her highest score in the tournament and it came in quick time at the top of the order. She ended with a strike rate of 112, smashing seven fours and a six.

It was also an occasion where the veteran made amends for her slow batting during World T20 where India lost to arch-rivals.

With her showing, the 34-year-old displayed she still has a lot to offer in the T20 format after being sacked as captain to make way for Harmanpreet Kaur.

The new captain had a quiet tournament by her standards as the all-rounder failed to muster up a 30 plus score in six innings and took just two wickets.

Left-arm spinner Bisht came good for India with the ball, ending as the team's most successful bowler with 10 wickets at an average of 5.20.

She, along with the rest of the bowlers, ensured Pakistan never got close to the target.

(PTI)
