The leading US infectious disease specialist, Dr Anthony Fauci, has said he foresees America achieving enough collective COVID-19 immunity through vaccinations to regain "some semblance of normality" by fall 2021.

Fauci's remarks came during an online discussion of the pandemic with California Governor Gavin Newsom, who announced at the outset that a highly infectious coronavirus variant originally found in Britain has been detected in his state, a day after the first known US case was documented in Colorado.

The coronavirus variant B.1.1.7 had been confirmed earlier in the day in a Southern California patient.

To this end, a not-so surprised Fauci, by his own admission, said the additional cases of the variant would likely surface around the nation and that the mutating nature of such viruses is normal.

"They make a living out of mutating. The more you mutate, the more you replicate," he said, saying that the overwhelming majority of mutations are "irrelevant." But, he added, "It appears that this particular mutation does make the virus better at transmitting from one person to another."

However, individuals infected with earlier forms of SAR-CoV-2 "don't seem to get re-infected by this," Fauci said, meaning that any immunity acquired from the coronavirus "is protective against this particular strain."

He also stressed that the so-called UK variant is believed to be no more severe in the symptoms it causes and possesses no special ability to evade the antibodies induced by the newly approved COVID-19 vaccines now in distribution.

Medical experts attribute the heightened contagion to the arrival of colder weather and the failure of many Americans to abide by public health warnings to avoid social gatherings and unnecessary travel over the year-end holiday season.

In his comments on Wednesday, Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and an advisor to Biden, said he was confident that early glitches in the vaccine campaign will be overcome.

"As we get into January, the feeling is that we're going to gain momentum to be able to catch up," he told Newsom, saying he expected to reach vaccine "open season," with immunizations becoming widely available to the general public on demand, by April.

Assuming that the broad vaccination campaign progresses as it should through May, June and July, "By the time we get to the early fall, we will have enough good herd immunity to be able to really get back to some strong semblance of normality - schools, theaters, sports events, restaurants," Fauci said.

It comes as a new poll showed Americans' willingness to take a coronavirus vaccine has jumped since the first two were authorized.

The USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, carried out Wednesday through Sunday, showed 46 percent said they were willing to take the vaccine as soon as they can -- a significant jump on the 26 percent who answered similarly in late October.

A further 32 percent said they would wait for others to get the shots before they do so themselves.

Twenty percent remain unpersuaded. Experts say 70-75 percent of the population will need to be vaccinated to achieve population immunity.

Earlier, Fauci paid tribute to his colleagues, saying the vaccine "essentially had its origination in the fundamental basic research that's conducted here at NIH."

NIAID scientists helped develop the mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) technology used in the Moderna vaccine, which gives the human body the genetic instructions it needs to create a surface protein of the coronavirus.

This simulates a natural infection and trains the immune system to be ready for when it encounters the real virus.

Traditional vaccines use weakened or inactivated forms of microbes, and take much longer to develop and scale up.

The US is hoping to immunize 20 million people this month, with long-term care residents and health workers at the front of the line.

However, Bannon did, later in the podcast, partially retract his punishment idea saying the President would not go ahead with this suggestion as Donald Trump is "kind hearted" and a "good man".&nbsp;

Many believe that Bannon's comment was meant as a metaphor but was poked by his co-anchor&nbsp;Jack Maxey who took the metaphor further by citing the example of anniversary of&nbsp;"hanging of two Tories in Philadelphia" during the American Revolution.

"These [Tories] were Quaker businessmen who had cohabitated, if you will, with the British while they were occupying Philadelphia. These people were hung. This is what we used to do to traitors," Maxey said. "That’s how you won the revolution… The revolution wasn’t some sort of garden party, right? It was a civil war."

The 30-second campaign ad cites Trump's personal experience with the virus -- "President Trump is recovering from the coronavirus, and so is America," it says -- before including a brief clip in which Fauci appears to praise the president's response to the pandemic.&nbsp;

"I can't imagine that anybody could be doing more," Fauci is shown as saying, creating the clear impression he is referring to Trump.

The complete clip, however, shows no hint of any appreciation. The clip is from Fauci's interview in March with Fox News, and shows the doctor saying: "I have been devoting almost full time on this. I'm down at the White House virtually every day with the task force. It's every single day. So, I can't imagine that under any circumstances that anybody could be doing more."
