"Wood was a crucial raw material for human evolution, but it is only in Schöningen that it has survived from the Paleolithic period in such great quality," University of Gottingen archaeologist Thomas Terberger said while speaking to Science Alert. The archaeologists found at least seven throwing sticks, 10 spears, and 35 domestic tools. The tools, which included spruce, pine, and larch, were all carved from wood and they were both hard and flexible. In the tools, there was clear proof of a splitting technique, along with signs of abrasion, scraping and carving. "The way the wooden tools were so expertly manufactured was a revelation to us," explained Annemieke Milks, University of Reading palaeolithic archaeologist. The researchers further argued that such powerful hunting abilities appear much older than the wood artefacts discovered in Schöningen. "The study provides unique insights into Pleistocene woodworking techniques," the researchers said. When given a choice of food rewards, rats consistently focused on the number of sounds rather than continuous magnitudes. It impacted their ability to understand numbers but not their sense of magnitude. "This suggests that the brain has a specific area for dealing with numbers," Professor Yung continued. Special wildlife police in eastern Spain have rescued many endangered animals in the past year. This includes Nile crocodiles, a heavy African spurred tortoise, and a large Burmese python. The officers recovered various protected species, according to the Seprona division of the Guardia Civil, as reported by the Guardian.&nbsp;

“The two Nile crocodiles, which each measured approximately 2 metres, were collected by officers from a private estate in El Moralet in Alicante province last August,” the statement said.

“At the end of 2023, a two-metre-long Burmese python was found in Alicante’s city centre. The African spurred tortoise, which weighed around 25kg, had been abandoned in the Sierra de Oltá mountains in Calpe,” it said.

Seprona also took possession of a Patagonian burrowing parrot and a Venezuelan blood-eared parakeet, among other animals.

“The rescued animals were taken to different rehabilitation centres, lodges and parks where specialists were able to evaluate their condition and provide the required treatment,” the statement said. “These facilities also offer the food, space and care needed to ensure each of the species can enjoy an optimal quality of life.”

In the study, which was published in the journal PLOS ONE and headed by Wim Van Neer of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Belgium, the details of 36 mummified baboon bodies which were found in Gabbanat el-Qurud, in the Valley of the Monkeys on the west bank of Luxor in Egypt were mentioned.&nbsp;

After the bodies were analysed, it was found that they were not kept in good condition.

Notably, all species, except the Woodland Dormouse, are covered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Appendix-II. CITES is a multilateral treaty to protect endangered plants and animals from the threats posed by international trade.&nbsp;

According to officials, the deceased animals were disposed off and the rescued animals were transported back to origin country, after being deemed fit and healthy for travel. This could mean that same-sex sexual behaviour might serve as an adaptation to manage male-to-male aggression.

Same-sex sexual behaviour reportedly offers numerous advantages in over 250 mammal species. Vincent Savolainen, a professor of organismic biology, explained&nbsp;that it can facilitate the formation of coalitions among individuals, elevating their status within a group.

This, in turn, grants them greater access to potential mates and enhances reproductive success.

Surprisingly, same-sex behaviour does not hinder opposite-sex reproduction and, therefore, does not limit the number of offspring produced by a population, as per the study.&nbsp;

Pampaphoneus is said to belong to the early therapsid clade Dinocephalia, a group of frightening and huge terrestrial animals which thrived before T. rex and pals. All Dinocephalians were not carnivores, however, Pampaphoneus was. 
 
"The animal had large, sharp canine teeth adapted for capturing prey," stated Felipe Pinheiro, a palaeontologist from the Federal University of Pampa (UNIPAMPA) in Brazil. 
 
"Its dentition and cranial architecture suggest that its bite was strong enough to chew bones, much like modern-day hyenas,” he added.

Pampaphoneus survived at the end of the Permian, just before 86 per cent of all animal species were wiped from the Earth in the largest-ever mass extinction event. 
 
"The fossil was found in middle Permian rocks, in an area where bones are not so common, but always hold pleasant surprises," stated first author Mateus A. Costa Santos, a palaeontologist at UNIPAMPA. 
 
Previously, fossils of other dinocephalians were found in Russia and South Africa, however, Pampaphoneus biccai is Brazil's only known species, and the team said that this well-preserved fossil "reveals new characters previously unknown for the species," since the scientists found a smaller skull in 2008.

An infant walrus, rescued earlier this month that needed round-the-clock cuddles, has unfortunately died, the&nbsp;Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) said in a statement&nbsp;where it had been receiving treatment.&nbsp;

“We are heartbroken to share that the&nbsp;walrus calf admitted to the&nbsp;ASLC&nbsp;Wildlife Response Program on August 1, 2023, passed away this morning after his condition took a turn for the worse,” read the statement.&nbsp;

The baby calf was found on Alaska’s North Slope, miles away from the ocean without the mother or any other walrus around. It had been suffering from a number of serious health concerns, including&nbsp;nutrient malabsorption (a condition where&nbsp;the&nbsp;body cannot effectively absorb nutrients from food).&nbsp;

Doctors said that in the 24 hours leading to his tragic passing, the calf was also struggling with&nbsp;hypoglycemia and&nbsp;gastrointestinal problems.&nbsp;

<h2>Baby walruses need constant care</h2>

The&nbsp;200-pound (90 kilogrammes) walrus calf had been receiving near-constant care from the rescuers at the centre to mimic the care that he would receive from his mother. The staff described cuddling as giving an "option to have a warm body to lean up against" which the pup had&nbsp;been taking advantage of almost constantly.

Notably, walrus calves are heavily dependent on their mother until they are two years old. However, they are quick to respond to the care of humans and initially, the walrus, who was not named, managed to drink formula from a bottle.&nbsp;

The little pup's death — one of just 10 that the centre has cared for in its 25-year history, has left everyone devastated.&nbsp;

"While often rewarding, wildlife rescue is inherently unpredictable and&nbsp;comes&nbsp;with it the possibility of great loss. For those that dedicate their lives to animal care, this is the hardest part of the job. We appreciate your understanding as the Center and its staff mourn, and&nbsp;we&nbsp;thank you for the outpouring of support that has come our way since this patient’s admission," read the statement by the centre.&nbsp;
