<p>A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolted Afghanistan on June 22, killing more than 1000 people and injuring hundreds. Local and international relief workers rushed to the affected regions but media reports suggest that thousands of people remain with little food, shelter and safe water in the aftermath of the country's deadliest earthquake in decades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As mentioned by the news agency Reuters, people who are affected by the earthquake in the eastern part of the country are in need of clean water and food. They are apparently at risk of diseases. A UN agency recently warned of a cholera outbreak in the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afghanistan's health ministry spokesperson Sharafat Zaman told news agency Reuters: "The people are extremely needy for food and clean water." Zaman added that the officials had managed medicines for now but handling those who had lost their homes would be a challenge.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by the news agency, he said: "We ask the international community, humanitarian organisations to help us for food and medicine, the survivor might catch diseases because they don’t have proper houses and shelters for living."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The quake struck about 44 km from the city of Khost, near the Pakistani border, the US Geological Survey (USGC) said. Shaking was felt by about 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, the EMSC said on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The quake caused massive damage in the country and the crisis emerged as a major test for Afghanistan's Taliban rulers. After the takeover of the country in August last year, the Taliban regime has isolated itself from much of the world by introducing hardline Islamic rule.&nbsp;</p>

It also rendered many people homeless in the country and since then, the United Nations and some countries have sent humanitarian aid to the people. While there have been complaints that Taliban authorities are trying to get aid to places where they enjoy the most support, AFP reported that the Taliban has denied all rumours about any interference till now.</p>

<p>Health minister Qalandar Ebad visited some of the earthquake-hit districts of the country.</p>

<p>India may soon send assistance to Afghanistan in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake that rocked the country. It is learnt that both India and Taliban have had exchanges with each other through well-established channels regarding assistance from New Delhi.</p>

<p>A 6.1 magnitude earthquake jolted Afghanistan earlier this week, with the true extent of devastation unravelling now. More than 1,000 are feared dead with scores injured in the earthquake.</p>

<p>Speaking to WION, the Taliban officials are hopeful that the "first batch of Indian emergency assistance will arrive" soon.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of External Affairs were quick to extend condolences. PM Modi in a tweet said, "India stands by the people of Afghanistan in their difficult times".</p>

<p>While New Delhi doesn't recognise the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, an Indian govt team visited Kabul three weeks ago. The visit was the first by the Indian government team since the Taliban takeover last August.</p>

<p>The key focus has been to oversee the Indian humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and take a look at the Indian infrastructure programs. Since August last year, India has provided 17,000 MT of Wheat out of its total commitment of 50,000 MT, 500,000 doses of Covid&nbsp;vaccine Covaxin, 13 tons of essential lifesaving medicines and winter clothing as well as 60 million doses of polio vaccine.</p>

<p>India has built the Afghan Parliament, and the India-Afghanistan friendship dam in western Herat Province. Along with this, it has also taken up 116 High Impact Community Development Projects in 31 provinces of the country.</p>

<p>A shallow earthquake hit western Afghanistan, killing at least 26 people, according to local media reports.</p>

<p>A shallow quake of magnitude 5.3 struck the strife-torn region on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey.</p>

<p>According to officials, the victims reportedly died when roofs of their houses collapsed in Qadis district in the western province of Badghis. It is estimated that more than 1,000 houses have been damaged.</p>

<p>“Five women and four children are among the 26 people killed in the earthquake,” spokesman for the province Baz Mohammad Sarwary told AFP, adding that four were injured.</p>

<p>There were also reports of major destruction in Muqr district in the province, however details of casualties are not yet known, Sarwary said.</p>

<p>The majority of the homes and buildings built in impoverished Afghanistan are of poor quality. Hence, whenever an earthquake occurs, it leaves behind a trail of destruction and casualties.</p>

<p>Qadis is already reeling from a devastating drought, and has been receiving international aid for the past 20 years.</p>

<p>In 2015, nearly 280 people were killed when a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake centred in the mountain range ripped across South Asia, with the bulk of the deaths in Pakistan.</p>

<p>In that disaster, 12 young Afghan girls were crushed to death in a stampede as they tried to flee their shaking school building.</p>

<p>Afghanistan is already in the grip of a humanitarian disaster, worsened by the Taliban takeover of the country in August when Western countries froze international aid and access to assets held abroad.</p>

<p>The United Nations estimates nearly 23 million Afghans — about 55 per cent of the population — are facing extreme levels of hunger, with nearly 9 million at risk of famine as winter takes hold.</p>

It is estimated that more than 1,000 houses have been damaged. “Five women and four children are among the 26 people killed in the earthquake,” spokesman for the province Baz Mohammad Sarwary told AFP, adding that four were injured. There were also reports of major destruction in Muqr district in the province, however details of casualties are not yet known, Sarwary said. The majority of the homes and buildings built in impoverished Afghanistan are of poor quality. Hence, whenever an earthquake occurs, it leaves behind a trail of destruction and casualties. Qadis is already reeling from a devastating drought, and has been receiving international aid for the past 20 years. In 2015, nearly 280 people were killed when a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake centred in the mountain range ripped across South Asia, with the bulk of the deaths in Pakistan. In that disaster, 12 young Afghan girls were crushed to death in a stampede as they tried to flee their shaking school building. Afghanistan is already in the grip of a humanitarian disaster, worsened by the Taliban takeover of the country in August when Western countries froze international aid and access to assets held abroad. The United Nations estimates nearly 23 million Afghans — about 55 per cent of the population — are facing extreme levels of hunger, with nearly 9 million at risk of famine as winter takes hold. 4.5-magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan's Fayzabad

<p>A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush mountain range region in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, with tremors felt as far away as Islamabad and New Delhi.</p>

<p>The quake hit at 0707 GMT (1237 IST) near Jarm, in Afghanistan&#39;s northern border with Tajikistan at a depth of 191 kilometres, the USGS said.</p>

<p>The quake was felt in the Delhi-NCR region as well as the Kashmir valley. Some people took to Twitter to report that tremors were felt in Islamabad too.</p>
