<p>Climate change has made the record breaking heat waves in India and Pakistan over 100 times more likely, and also increased the chances that such events will occur more frequently in the future, according to a study by the UK Met Office.</p>

<p>The analysis released on Wednesday means extreme temperature events once expected every three centuries are now likely to happen every three years.</p>

<p>The study estimated the chances of exceeding the record temperature witnessed in April and May in 2010, which saw the highest combined average April and May temperature since 1900.</p>

<p>The attribution study, which determines the influence of climate change on a particular weather event, shows that the natural probability of a heat wave exceeding the average temperature in 2010 was once in 312 years.</p>

<p>However, in the current climate scenario that accounts for climate change, the probabilities increase to once in every 3.1 years.</p>

<p>The scientists estimated that by the end of the century, the probability of heat wave will increase to once every 1.15 years.</p>

<p>"With temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in recent days, it is clear the current heat wave is an extreme weather event affecting communities and livelihoods," Professor Peter Stott, Met Office Science Fellow in Climate Attribution, said in a statement.</p>

<p>Although a new record is thought likely, climate scientists will have to wait until after the end of the month, when all the temperature records for the April-May period have been collated to see whether the current heat wave will exceed the levels experienced in 2010.</p>

<p>"Spells of heat have always been a feature of the region's pre-monsoon climate during April and May," said Nikos Christidis, who produced the study.</p>

<p>"Our study shows that climate change is driving the heat intensity of these spells making record-breaking temperatures 100 times more likely. By the end of the century increasing climate change is likely to drive temperatures of these values on average every year, Christidis said.</p>

<p>The scientists adopted the peer-reviewed risk-based methodology that infers probabilities of extreme events with and without the effect of human influence from large multi-model ensembles of climate model simulations.</p>

<p>They noted that extreme pre-monsoon heatwave has eased a little after peak temperatures reached 51 degrees Celsius in Pakistan on Sunday.</p>

<p>"However, the heat looks likely to build again from mid-week, peaking later in the week or into the weekend, with maximum temperatures again likely to reach 50 degrees Celsius in some spots, with continued very high overnight temperatures," said Paul Hutcheon, of the UK Met Office's Global Guidance Unit.</p>

<p>"Through the weekend temperatures are likely to lower again closer to average. There is also a continued enhanced risk of fires (largely from planned agricultural burning) in the region which would further add to the poor air quality. Some strong winds will lift dust plumes at times too, Hutcheon added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Adani&nbsp;Group, owned by billionaire Gautam&nbsp;Adani, currently has no cement-making operations but said the firms were a good fit given its ports and logistics, energy and real estate businesses.</p>

<p>Under the deal,&nbsp;Adani&nbsp;Group will pay $6.4 billion in cash to acquire Switzerland-based Holcim's 63.1 per cent&nbsp;stake in Ambuja Cements Ltd and 54.5 per cent&nbsp;holding in ACC Ltd, Holcim said in a statement announcing the deal late on Sunday. The rest of the companies' shares will be bought via an open offer,&nbsp;Adani&nbsp;said in a separate statement.</p>

<p>Shares in Ambuja jumped as much as 5.2 per cent&nbsp;to 377.70 rupees while ACC rose 8.3 per cent&nbsp;to a high of 2,287.70 rupees on Monday, but traded below the prices offered by&nbsp;Adani.</p>

<p>Ambuja's shares closed 2.5 per cent&nbsp;&nbsp;higher at 368 rupees compared with the offer price of 385 rupees. ACC's shares ended Monday 3.9 per cent&nbsp;&nbsp;higher at 2,196.20 rupees versus the offer price of 2,300 rupees.</p>

<p>On Sunday (May 16), the Kidambi Srikanth-starrer Indian men's badminton team created history as India won the Thomas Cup for the first time ever, beating Indonesia in the final by 3-0. Thus, India became only the sixth country to win the Thomas Cup, which has been dominated by Indonesia&nbsp;so far.</p>

<p>India defeated Malaysia, Denmark and Indonesia in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, respectively, to stun the sporting fraternity and give immense pride and happiness to the countrymen back home. The likes of Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, etc. all played a key role in the memorable triumph, which has given a huge boost to badminton in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking about Prannoy, he was India's saviour in crunch moments during the quarters and semis and won the team big moments to help them proceed ahead. Recalling how a WhatsApp group led to the team's honest bonding and led to their triumph, Prannoy said as per a report in India Today, "We had this WhatsApp group set up just after the Thomas Cup team was decided. I created the group. We thought that we need a group to have open conversations about everything regarding the tournament. It definitely helped us because everybody was open to saying anything in the group, discuss freely. The name was 'it's coming home'. I am glad that the Thomas Cup is actually home now."</p>

We wanted to change it. We wanted everyone to be scared of us. I think we wanted everybody to know we are world-beaters. I can't be more happier,” concluded Prannoy.</p>

<p>Efforts by National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) and the Fire service are underway, to save one worker who is trapped under heavy debris of boulders in a 300-feet-deep, 50-feet-wide quarry. This accident in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district occurred during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when unstable rocks descended from the higher portions of the quarry into the depths. The crashing pile of rocks and debris had trapped workers who were operating heavy vehicles and carrying out loading of rocks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As of Tuesday, two persons have been rescued alive, mortal remains of three others have been recovered, and efforts are underway to find an individual who remains trapped. A 30-member NDRF team from Arakkonam, led by an Assistant Commandant has been on site since Sunday and has been leading the rescue efforts.</p>
