Dubbing TRS as a 'family outfit,' BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav on Wednesday said the K Chandrasekhar led-party was apprehensive of losing the assembly elections, had it been held along with the general elections in 2019.

Addressing BJP booth level workers at Armoor in Nizamabad district, he said people had given a five year mandate to the Chief Minister. But he 'gave up' in just four years.

"Now what is the guarantee that you (KCR) will not run away (if you come to power) after four years?" he asked.

"Why are we going for elections in four years? Because KCR is apprehensive that he will not win if the assembly elections are held along with Lok Sabha elections in 2019," he said.

Madhav alleged that the double bedroom housing scheme announced by the TRS government had become an unfulfilled promise.

He said the Modi government had taken the initiative of providing a house to every poor family in the country by 2022.

"The BJP government had promised five crore houses to the poor by 2022. This year we sanctioned one crore houses," he said.

Madhav said that on the health care front, the BJP government had launched the Ayushman Bharat scheme to provide quality and specialised health care facilities worth up to Rs five lakh to the poor.

On the one hand, Prime Minister Modi was trying to take the country forward, while on the other Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was trying to take the state backwards, he said.

"Telangana has achieved a record in corruption during the past four years. It occupies second position among the corrupt states in the country," he alleged

"Modi does not have a family, so there is no question of family rule.

But in Telangana, it is not only family rule, it is Beta (son), beti (daughter) and mai (me)," he charged.

Ram Madhav said TRS could get only a narrow margin of 63 seats (of 119 seats) during the 2014 elections despite bragging about achieving statehood.

But KCR lured members of other paties into TRS, he alleged.

Hitting out at Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Ram Madhav alleged that both he and his Telangana counterpart provide corrupt governance.

Former Union minister Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday said people should not "forgive" Prime Minister Narendra Modi and "uproot" his government in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

He was addressing a farmers' gathering at Vanthali in Gujarat's Junagadh district, around 300 km from here.

"This government has failed on all fronts. Everyone is suffering, be it farmers, youth, women or Dalits. Only new slogans are being given. The only solution is to uproot this government in the next (Lok Sabha) polls," Sinha said.

"I want to apologise because I was also part of the BJP when promises were made ahead of 2014 (general) elections. But I do not want you to forgive him (Modi) in the next polls," he said.

The former finance minister has been a vocal critic of the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government and resigned from the party in April this year.

Sinha was invited by Patidar leader Hardik Patel to address the farmers.

Commenting on the unveiling of a 182-metre statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Narmada district earlier on Wednesday, Sinha said Modi should have announced a pro-farmer scheme on the occasion.

"He did not announce any scheme for farmers because he has forgotten them," he said.

Disgruntled BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha was also present at the gathering.

The actor-turned-politician said he will not complain if the BJP sacked him.
"I did not come into politics for any personal gain. I will not complain if my party sacks me tomorrow. I love the people of this country more than my party," he said.&nbsp;

The CBI on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that the FIR on bribery allegations against Special Director Rakesh Asthana and others shows cognisable offences.

The agency opposed Asthana's plea seeking quashing of the FIR and said a roving inquiry at this stage was not permissible.&nbsp;

It also told the court that the probe against Asthana was at a nascent stage and several incriminating documents, as well as the role of other persons, was under investigation.&nbsp;

The agency said it was handicapped in the probe as certain files and documents were under the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) scrutiny.

The agency denied all adverse allegations levelled by Asthana, "whether germane or not germane", in his petition.

The petitions of Asthana, CBI DSP Devendra Kumar and alleged middleman Manoj Prasad are scheduled to come up for hearing before a bench of Justice Najmi Waziri during the day.&nbsp;

More than 100 passengers were stranded at Kolkata airport early Thursday after a water tanker hit a Qatar Airways aircraft, which was preparing to take off for Doha.

Around 2.30am, when passengers were boarding the plane, a water tanker hit the belly of the Doha-bound flight, near the landing gear, an official of Airports Authority of India (AAI) said.

The plane was immediately grounded for inspection and the passengers were safely deboarded, he said.

No one was hurt in the accident, the official noted.

"All 103 passengers of the flight have been provided accommodation at a nearby hotel. They will be taking the 3am flight to Doha tomorrow (Friday)," he said.

Initial inspection suggests that the water tanker had technical issues, the brake wasn't functioning properly, the AAI official added.

Meanwhile, a source in the DGCA said an inquiry has been initiated into the incident.

"We will take corrective measures based on the inquiry report," he said.

The Indian government has invoked never-used-before powers under the RBI Act allowing it to issue directions to the central bank governor on matters of public interest, the Economic Times reported on Wednesday.

Separate letters have been sent to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor in recent weeks, exercising powers under the Section 7 of the RBI Act on issues ranging from liquidity for non-banking financial companies, capital requirement for weak banks and lending to small and medium enterprises, the report said.

Section 7 says that 'the Central Government may from time to time give such directions to the Bank as it may, after consultation with the Governor of the Bank, consider necessary in the public interest', a statute that has not been used in independent India, according to the Economic Times.

The RBI was not immediately available for comment. The finance ministry could not be immediately reached for comment.

Tensions between the RBI and the government have spilled into the public domain after Deputy Governor Viral Acharya said last week that undermining central bank independence could be "potentially catastrophic", indicating the authority is pushing back against government pressure to relax its policies and reduce its powers ahead of a general election due by May.

Adding to the row, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley blamed the central bank for failing to stop a lending spree during 2008-2014 that left banks with $150 billion of bad debt.

RBI Governor Urjit Patel may consider resigning after rift with government: Report

After Modi unveils the statue, three IAF planes would fly past and create the tricolour in the sky by emitting saffron, white and green colours, said an official release Tuesday.

Modi would also inaugurate the 'Wall of Unity' (a monument defining India's unity) near the statue. At that time, three Jaguar fighter jets would fly past the structure at a low altitude, said the release.

Statue of Unity unveiling live: Amazed when some people dare to see this from a political view and criticise us, says Modi

The world's tallest statue which portrays one of the founding fathers of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was unveiled by <a href="http://www.wionews.com/opinions/pm-narendra-modi-pens-tribute-to-sardar-patel-calls-him-the-maker-of-modern-india-174534">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> in his home state of Gujarat on Wednesday, the 143rd birth anniversary of Patel.

Sardar Patel, known as the 'Iron Man' was instrumental in the integration of nearly 500 princely states into the Indian union after independence.

"We bow to the great Sardar Patel, the stalwart who unified India and served the nation tirelessly, on his Jayanti," Modi tweeted before inaugurating the statue.

Earlier today, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Home Minister Rajnath Singh paid floral tribute to Sardar Patel in New Delhi.

At a height of 182 metres, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/photos/on-statue-of-unity-inaugeration-here-are-top-five-tallest-statues-in-the-world-174352">the iron and bronze statue</a> is twice the size of the Statue of Liberty in the US and cost $420 million to build. Sardar Patel's birth anniversary is being observed as National Unity Day.

"The first challenge was its height. Secondly, like I said, the location was in a remote stretch and the third problem was the structure. The shape of the statue is such that the foundation is narrower than the upper body. So that was a challenge, structure-wise," said PC Vyas, chief engineer of the Statue of Unity project.

It is the tallest statue in the world beating China's Spring Temple Buddha (153 metres).

Located in Sadhu-Bet Island, Gujarat, the statue occupies over 20,000 square meters and is surrounded by a 12 square km artificial lake.&nbsp; The total project cost is estimated to be Rs. 2,989 crore.

Online booking to visit the Statue of Unity has opened with a Rs 350 admission fee for the 153-metre-high observation deck.

Authorities say they expect the statue will attract 15,000 visitors a day to the remote corner of Gujarat, which is about 100 kilometres from the nearest city of Vadodora.

India is also working on a giant statue of 17th-century warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji, riding a horse and brandishing a sword, which should dominate the Mumbai shoreline from 2021. The current design would make it 212 metres high.

Following the Supreme Court’s direction, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has put up guidelines for the public to file complaints of air pollution in Delhi-NCR on its social media page, website and through its mobile app.&nbsp;

On October 29, the SC directed the CPCB to immediately create a social media page on which citizens could lodge their complaints regarding pollution directly “to be acted upon by the task force responsible for implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)”.

Following its direction, the CPCB gave out a number of ways through which the public can lodge their complaints. These include posting complaints on the official page of the CPCB on Facebook and Twitter, filing them through its official website or the Sameer app developed by it.

Delhi’s air quality nosedived in the last two weeks which, among other reasons, is due to violations. Taking note of it, the CPCB was asked by the apex court to create a transparent system where people could lodge complaints.

The World Bank does not agree with US President Donald Trump’s claim that India is a “tariff king” and feels that the Indian taxation system and the economy are much more liberalised than it was a few decades ago, a top official of the international financial institution said Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Trump described India as a “tariff king” as he reiterated his allegations that New Delhi has a high tariff rate on various American goods.

“That (India being a tariff king) certainly is not what we find in our data,” Shanta Devarajan, the World Bank’s Senior Director for Development Economics and Acting Chief Economist, told PTI in an interview when asked about Trump’s statement.

“India has some tariffs, but by no means, it’s not (tariff) king,” said Devarajan, who earlier was chief economist for South Asia at the World Bank.

Even in South Asia India did not have the highest tariffs, he said referring to the experience he had in his previous capacity in the World Bank.

“And they (tariffs in India) have come down quite a bit since then,” he said.

Liberalisation of the Indian economy is showing results, he said.

“Tariffs were very high in 1991 when they liberalised and they found that actually, the economy boomed. That has helped to build political support for further reforms,” Devarajan said.

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday appointed Dilbag Singh as full-time Director General of Police. Singh was made the state DGP as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court, officials said in Jammu. He took over as interim chief of the state police force on September 6 after his predecessor S P Vaid, caught in a verbal duel with the new Jammu and Kashmir administration, was shunted out and posted as transport commissioner.

An order to this effect was issued by Principal Secretary Home, R K Goyal, which read that he shall also hold additional charge of the posts of Director General of Police (Prisons) till further orders and Director, Fire and Emergency Services, till December 31.

The name of Singh, a 1987-batch IPS officer, was cleared by the State Administrative Council headed by Governor Satyapal Malik here. A panel of three names for the post was submitted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) last week. The Supreme Court on September 20 had made it clear that Singh will continue in office till the UPSC scrutinises and provides a panel of three police officers for regular appointment of the police chief.

Vaid was posted as Transport Commissioner, a post which was held by Saugat Biswas, a 2006-IAS batch officer. The post has been upgraded from an additional secretary to the rank of secretary. It will be headquartered in Jammu.

Dilbag Singh’s batchmate V K Singh, who was functioning as Special Director General at the police headquarters, has been shifted and posted as commandant general of home guards, civil defence and the state’s disaster rescue Force.

After inaugurating the Wall of Unity, Modi would offer floral tributes to Patel, whose birth anniversary falls on October 31. At the same time, two MI-17 helicopters would shower flowers on the statue, it said.

On the occasion, cultural and musical programmes will be performed by the bands of Gujarat Police, armed and paramilitary forces.

There will be dance and musical performances by artistes drawn from 29 states and two Union Territories.

Some of other major attractions include inauguration of a 17-km-long Valley of Flowers, a tent city for tourists near the statue and a museum dedicated to the life and times of Patel.

A viewing gallery at a height of 135 metres has been created inside the statue to enable tourists to have a view of the dam and nearby mountain ranges.

The statue has been built using over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforcement steel, 6,000 tonnes of structural steel and 1,700 metric tonnes of bronze, which was used for the outer cladding of the structure, according to the government statement.

The statue's construction had received opposition from some tribal groups in Narmada district.

Meanwhile, local tribal leaders have announced a boycott of Wednesday's event claiming "mass destruction" of natural resources due to the project.

In an open letter addressed to Modi, sarpanches of 22 villages situated near the Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada river have said villagers will not welcome the prime minister when he arrives for the function.

"We villagers want to tell you with extreme grief that we will not welcome you on October 31. Even if you come here like an unwanted guest, you are not welcome here," said the common letter signed by sarpanches of the villages of Narmada district, located around 200 km from Ahmedabad.

The area still lacks basic facilities like schools, hospitals and drinking water, they alleged.&nbsp;

For the second time in a fortnight, China has alerted India of a possible flood-like situation in the Brahmaputra river in Arunachal Pradesh after a landslide blocked water upstream in Tibet, a senior Water Resources Ministry official said on Wednesday.

The alert of a landslide and subsequent formation of an artificial lake was informed to India late on Monday evening separately through diplomatic channels and the mechanism under which China shares hydrological data with the Brahmaputra, the official added.

"As per latest information received from the Chinese side, the estimated blocked water storage volume at landslide location (Milin Section of Yarlung Zangpo in Chinese Territory) at 6.30 hrs IST (9 hrs Chinese time) on 31st Oct 2018 is 337 MCM," the Central Water Commission tweeted.

On October 17, China had communicated to India about a landslide near Jiala Village in Milin County in the lower ranges of Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet, which led to formation of an artificial lake.&nbsp;

As the water started breaching the lake, the districts along the Brahmaputra river in Arunachal Pradesh were put on high alert for possible flash floods.

The Yarlung Tsangpo, as it is referred to by China, is known as Siang in Arunachal Pradesh and Brahmaputra after it reaches Assam.

"This time the landside occurred at the same place and has again led to creation of an artificial lake, which has now started breaching. However, the situation is not grave as it was a fortnight ago," he said.&nbsp;

From May, China resumed sharing hydrological data on the Brahmaputra and Sutlej rivers. In April, the two sides had signed an agreement to share data on Brahmaputra and Sutlej.

For the Brahmaputra river, data was shared by China from May 15, while it started sharing data for the Sutlej from June 1 until October 15.&nbsp;

However, the two recent events have taken place after the data sharing period was over.&nbsp;

"The agreement also states that data has to be shared in case of an emergency and they (China) have done that," the official added.

Anil Sutar, the son of 'Statue of Unity' sculptor, works behind the scene to create gigantic dreams possible

The 600-feet '<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/statue-of-unity-worlds-tallest-unveiled-by-pm-modi-as-tribute-to-sardar-vallabhbhai-patel-174548">Statue of Unity</a>' overlooking the Sardar Sarovar Dam near Vadodara is today the "world's tallest statue" but it was made by a sculptor who is no more than just over 5 foot, 5 inches, aged 93, a man with tall dreams - Ram Vanji Sutar.

The gigantic structure, inaugurated by <a href="http://www.wionews.com/opinions/pm-narendra-modi-pens-tribute-to-sardar-patel-calls-him-the-maker-of-modern-india-174534">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> as tribute to Sardar Patel on his 143rd birth anniversary, can be gauged by the fact that Patel's feet itself measures a mammoth 80 feet, according to Ram.

As a young man back in the summer of 1947, Ram had a dream, in his own words he says a bird chirped in his ears while he was asleep that he should leave everything and follow his dream, sure enough, he left everything and struck out. Ram has made over 350 Gandhi statues the world over and at over 90 is still going strong.

Ram calls the unique Vallabhbhai statue as his "masterpiece" and a dream come true. Ram painstakingly looked at every detail of the towering leader right from his walk, the clothes he wore, his expressions to his sitting posture. It was a project which started in 2013 and took three and half years to conceive, build and finally to be erected alongside the picturesque dam in Gujarat.

In his career, Ram has seen PMs and President's come and go, some vanish and other's make a mark, he has encapsulated them in his sculptures. His studio in the deepest corner of Noida in Uttar Pradesh showcases his vast array of work from Rajiv, Indira, Rajesh Pilot to a virtual who's who of Indian politics, it can easily be called India's version of Madame Taussads.

"This statue describes Sardar Patel as a strong-willed person," he says proudly. He is helped in his endeavour by his architect son Anil Sutar who combines his father's sculpting expertise with an architect's eye and cutting-edge engineering skills to put together statues which now has become a wonder of the world.

Anil informs quite candidly that the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/photos/on-statue-of-unity-inaugeration-here-are-top-five-tallest-statues-in-the-world-174352">massive bronze structure</a> has a "China touch" since it has been assembled there because India does not have a bronze foundry, of course, the father-son duo left nothing to chance spending weeks at a time in China to ensure it was conceived the way they envisioned it back home. It was brought to India in pieces, reassembled and was unveiled on October 31.

"There were statues of Gandhiji including of Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Maulana Azad and other personalities, then it was thought a statue of Sardar Patel was needed in Parliament," he says giving due credit to Patel's contribution in India's freedom struggle and his contribution towards uniting India's princely states.
&nbsp;
The Padmashree awardee credits the "Statue of Unity" to PM Modi; "it takes two people - one who thinks about the concept and the other who partners the dream," he declares.
&nbsp;
"As a young man, I had thought that I will one day make a life-size statue of Hanumanji in which on his chest Ram and Laxman will be carved, with this statute of Sardar Patel, I think I have achieved my dream," says the proud sculptor.

As the nation pays homage to Vallabhbhai, Ram Sutar too has carved his name in history, forever.
