If there is any government that will accomplish Mahatma Gandhi`s dream of Swachh Bharat, it will be our government, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on Wednesday while addressing a function.

Some 130 kilometres from Srinagar and into deep forests is a village which has been facing the brunt of ceasefire violations by the Pakistan army along the Line of Control in Kashmir.

Jabda Batad is the last village, just 800 meters from the fence, in Uri district of Baramulla in north Kashmir. Here, the lull is broken by the loud noise of gunfire and mortar shells which have been landing in the adjoining villages, injuring and killing the residents.

After the abrogation of Article 370 by the central government on August 5, the villagers say, the shelling has only intensified. "We have been facing fire since years now, sometimes, we lose our family members, at times, houses and the cattle," says Alam Din, a resident.

Alam's house was partially damaged after a 120mm mortar landed on the tin roof, shattering it to pieces. Luckily, the shell didn't breach the roof under which his children and wife were sitting. "We don't have any bunkers here and that has been our demand for long. Just some months back, a man who worked with the security forces was killed when he had come home on holidays," he adds while pointing at the house.

The villagers here have many stories to tell, of pain and miseries caused by the ceasefire violation. The unexplored shells are lying in open fields and villagers fear to go close. Parts of those which have exploded are collected by the kids.

He says his right was amputated as the injury was serious. “This time, the shelling and the firing were intense. On September 9, we witnessed heavy firing with mortar shells landing everywhere. We ran for our lives.” he says adding that it was a war-like situation.

“Our kids are suffering the most, the situation is unpredictable. Anytime, the fire can come,” he adds while walking through difficult terrain. With time, Dodu has learnt to walk with his one leg.

The UK high court on Wednesday ruled in favour of India and heirs of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad in the 70-year-old case.

The case "High Commissioner for Pakistan in the UK v Prince Mukkaram Jah & others’ or referred as "Hyderabad fund case" pertains to £35 million funds that are being held by the National Westminster Bank in London. India and the heir of the last Nizam of Hyderabad will get 306 crore, that is Rs 45,80,500

"Nizam VII was beneficially entitled to the fund and those claiming in right of Nizam VII - the Princes and India - are entitled to have the sum paid out to their order. I will leave it to the parties to frame an appropriate form of order for my approval" the judgement handed out by Justice Marcus Smith said.

On September 20, 1948, the foreign minister of the then princely state of Hyderabad, Nawab Moin Nawaz Jung, transferred £1,007,940, which is today's equivalent of £35 million to the account of Habib Ibrahim Rahimtoola, the Pakistani High Commissioner to the UK.

Pakistan claimed the funds were transferred as payments for arms shipments during the rebellion in the state or as an outright gift. The High Court held that "beneficial ownership" of the funds lay with the seventh Nizam concluding that India and the two grandsons of Nizam were now entitled to have the fund.

The case first came to focus in 1954 when Pakistan asserted its sovereignty since money was sent into the account of its then High Commissioner Rahimtoola. Bleaching, fogging should be done...The administration is preparing a plan regarding that. As soon as the water level recedes, work will begin on it," he said. When asked about the electricity problem being faced by the residents, he said, "Electricity department says --when there is water, there are chances of electrocution...so we have to save lives of people as well. As soon as the water level recedes, the electricity supply will resume." The Minister also appreciated the authorities including the NDRF and SDRF for their work. The MP from Patna Sahib constituency said he was pained, noting that it was his responsibility to be with the people. "I am pained. I am with my people. That is why I am here for the last four days. It is my responsibility. The central government is with Bihar and people of Patna so that they get relief as soon as possible," he said. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has rescued over 10,000 people from state capital Patna which has been reeling under floods since the last few days, NDRF Commandant Vijay Sinha said on Wednesday. Speaking to ANI, Sinha said, "NDRF has rescued 10,000 people, so far. Relief material distribution and their need for food are also being addressed."

The UK High Court on Wednesday ruled in favour of India and the successors of late 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, who sent £1 million to a London bank in 1948, now estimated to be £35 million.

"In the judgment today, the UK High Court has rejected Pakistan`s claim that the fund had been intended as payment for arms shipments or as an outright gift. The Court has held that beneficial ownership in the fund as on 1948 lay with the 7th Nizam and that it had been held on trust to his benefit and that of his successors in the title since then," the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

The fund has been held by the National Westminster Bank in London.

The fund had been held in the account of the High Commissioner of Pakistan to the UK Rahimtoola since September 1948.

It had been the subject of earlier proceedings in the 1950s in which the UK House of Lords set aside proceedings brought by the 7th Nizam claiming the fund as Pakistan invoked state immunity, the statement read.

In 2013, Pakistan commenced fresh proceedings, thereby waiving state immunity. A subsequent attempt by Pakistan to discontinue the proceedings was rejected as an abuse of process by the UK Court.

The Court issued a wide-ranging judgment today and rejected arguments advanced by Pakistan that the dispute was non-justiciable, either in whole or in part; that the doctrine of illegality somehow barred recovery; or that the claims of other parties were time-barred.

The Court also held that Pakistan`s pleading of limitation was an "abuse of process" and that remedies in trust law and restitution were available against both Pakistan and the Bank.

Having found that the 7th Nizam was beneficially entitled to the fund, the Court today concluded that those claiming in right of the 7th Nizam, that is, India and the two grandsons of Nizam were now entitled to have the fund.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary and said that his vision continues to resonate across the world, including through the work of the U.N. Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary is observed as International Day of Non-Violence by the global community. "Mahatma Gandhi pioneered successive non-violent movements that changed history. 150 years since his birth, Gandhi's philosophy is at the core of our work at the U.N. May his courage and conviction continue to inspire us on Wednesday's International Day of Non-Violence and every day, " tweeted Guterres. Mahatma Gandhi pioneered successive non-violent movements that changed history. 150 years since his birth, Gandhi’s philosophy is at the core of our work at the @UN. May his courage & conviction continue to inspire us on Wednesday’s International Day of Non-Violence & every day. — António Guterres (@antonioguterres) October 2, 2019 × "His vision continues to resonate across the world, including through the work of the United Nations for mutual understanding, equality, sustainable development, the empowerment of young people, and the peaceful resolution of disputes", Guterres said in a statement commemorating the day. Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar town of Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi adopted a non-violent resistance and was at the forefront of the freedom struggle against the colonial British rule with utmost patience. This led to India finally achieving its independence in 1947. Fondly known as Bapu, his unwavering belief in 'swaraj' (self-governance) and 'ahimsa' (violence) won him accolades across the world. Guterres recalled that before Mahatma Gandhi's assassination on January 1948, after the partition of India the previous year, Gandhi constantly highlighted "the gap between what we do, and what we are capable of doing". "On this International Day, I urge each and every one of us to do everything in our power to bridge this divide as we strive to build a better future for all", concluded the U.N. Secretary-General.
