India has rapped Islamabad at the United Nations for raking up Kashmir at a debate on "advancement of women" at the United Nations General Assembly and asked the country what did its army do during Bangladesh's liberation war in 1971.

Paulomi Tripathi, first secretary at the Indian mission at the UN said, " The international community still remembers that the armed forces of this country perpetrated dreadful sexual violence against women with impunity, in our immediate neighbourhood in 1971. We still hear accounts of these gruesome violations at the annual high-level general debate."

India said it "ironical" that a "country, where violations of women’s right to life in the name of so-called "honour" go unpunished, is making baseless statements about women’s rights in my country."

The outgoing ambassador of Pakistan to the UN Maleeha Lodhi had raked up Kashmir at the UN while talking about the communication ban in the region in a debate.

India highlighted how it gives "utmost importance" to "representation of women in decision making positions" and said it is "proud that the first woman President of the General Assembly was Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit from India" and it was India's Dr Hansa Mehta who made "pioneering contribution" in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On Modi government's policies, the diplomat said though government’s financial Inclusion Initiative, more than 197 million women in India have a bank account and via Stand Up India and Mudra Yojana programmes women entrepreneurs are able to get access to loans.

New Delhi has also launched the National Nutrition Mission to eradicate malnutrition by 2022, with special focus on children, women and adolescent girls.

This is not the first time Pakistan has raked up the Kashmir issue in the unrelated platform. In September, the Pakistani delegates had raised the Kashmir issue at the sustainable development goal in Maldives Parliament and UNICEF South Asian Parliamentarian Conference in Sri Lanka and were given a strong reply by the sitting Indian delegates.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tributes to former French President Jacques Chirac and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during a speech ahead of India receiving the first of the Rafale fighter aircraft in France on Tuesday. Singh said October 8 is a milestone for Indo-France strategic partnership and marks a new high in bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries. "Former President Jacques Chirac had laid the basic groundwork for a strategic partnership between India and France along with Prime Minister Vajpayee," said Singh. Singh thanked French aviation major Dassault, which manufactures the Rafale, for sticking to the delivery timeline of the fighter jet. "I am sure the delivery of the remaining aircraft and the weapon systems will be on time. The acquisition of Rafale by India will ensure global peace, prosperity and environmental sustainability in the region," he added. Singh received the first Rafale jet following a traditional `Shastra Puja` at the Dassault facility in Merignac. "I am glad many officials and airmen of the Indian Air Force are being trained for flying, maintenance, support and logistics. The training will help the officials achieve technical knowledge and professional expertise," said Singh.

Last night, India's Border Security Force (BSF) spotted a Pakistani-origin drone in the Firozpur area of Punjab near the India-Pakistan border.

The BSF spotted the same drone almost five times between ten pm and 12 midnight, during which it crossed the border into India once. Military officials are still investigating the incident in collaboration with the Punjab state police. The state police, on September 22, recovered a large number of AK-47 assault rifles, satellite phones and grenades dropped in Punjab's Tarn Taran district through eight drone sorties between September 9 and 16. One drone crashed due to a technical problem.

Since India scrapped the Article 370 of the Constitution this year, Pakistan's Intel agencies and ISI have been using the terror networks of Khalistan Zindabad Force and others to drop weapons, fake currencies and other material to the Indian side of the border. The state police have made a few arrests in Tarn Taran and allege that the men captured are terrorists of the Khalistan Zindabad Force who are actively working to carry out these drone activities against India with the intention to execute 26/11-like terror attacks at religious places across Punjab.

The Punjab Police's investigation reveals that the Pakistan-based chief of the KZF, Ranjeet Singh, alias Neeta, and his Germany-based associate Gurmeet Singh, alias Bagga, were involved in the delivery of weapons from across the border. Additionally, with the help of local sleeper cells, they radicalised and recruited local members to foment trouble. Punjab police, along with the forensic team have recovered a few parts of the drone which include a GPS antenna fitted in the drone. Some parts of the drone have been disposed of in canals near the villages.

Indian Air Force Chief RKS Bhadauria has already expressed concerns over how small drones can become a big threat to border security in the future. He earlier said that the Indian Air Force was in the process of procuring sensors and other equipment to thwart drone attacks.

The Border Security Force has been kept on high alert following reports of drones dropping weapons into the Indian territory and returning to Pakistan undetected.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, and said the effort will come to fruition when justice denied under its influence is restored and Kashmiri Pandits are brought back and rehabilitated.

In his address at the Vijayadashami function of RSS, Bhagwat said the move of the BJP-led regime to nullify Article 370 has once again proved that it has the courage to fulfil expectations and respect people's sentiments and wishes in the interest of the country.

He said the repeal of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, has been on the agenda of the ruling party. The Article was repealed in August this year almost two months after the BJP-led coalition returned to power at the Centre with a greater majority.

"But this time by skilfully garnering the support of other parties in both Houses, with strong logic and plea in consonance with public sentiment, the work was accomplished, for which the members of the ruling party, including the Prime Minister and Home Minister, and other political parties who upheld the public sentiments in Parliament deserve congratulations," he said.

"This effort will come to fruition only when justice denied under the influence of Article 370 is restored, injustices occurred are brought to an end. It will happen when our Kashmiri Pandits who were unjustly driven away are brought back and rehabilitated and allowed to remain secure, fearless, patriotic and Hindu," he added.

Bhagwat said there is also a need to restore the rights of residents which were denied to them.

"Many a right of residents of Kashmir which were denied to them so far will be restored, and false fears instilled in the minds of brothers of the Valley that there is a threat to their property and jobs due to the nullification of Article 370, will be removed and having done away with those fears, they will be able to perform their duties towards the country's development with brotherly affinity and concord with the people of rest of Bharat," he said.

In a major step to revive tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, the authorities have decided to lift the advisory. In its advisory, the government had asked tourists to leave and not to visit Kashmir.

A high-level situation-cum-security review meeting, headed by Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, was held on Monday during which it was decided that the advisory will be lifted from October 10.

Those associated with the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir have welcomed the move and hoped that more tourists will visit the Valley after the announcement.

“We are happy that this advisory has been lifted but we hope that government of India does more to remove the fear among the tourists regarding the situation in Kashmir valley,” says Mohammad Hafiz Shalla who is involved in the tourism sector in Srinagar.

Shalla hopes winter tourism to bring people from India and across the globe to enjoy the hospitality Jammu and Kashmir offers. Few tourists have been visiting despite the advisory, most from Malaysia, Singapore and other parts of India.

“I have been in Srinagar from the last two days and we didn’t feel any insecurity. People here are warm and welcoming. Other people who are hesitant should change their mind,” says a young couple from Varanasi.

Although the Governor has been holding these meetings on a daily basis for almost two hours, sources say that Monday's meeting was an important one as several issues, regarding providing public transportation and opening schools, colleges and universities, were discussed at length.

“The main agenda of the meeting was reviewing the security scenario following the imposition of restrictions after constitutional changes that were made,” authorities said.
