Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) working president JP Nadda on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s decision not to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) has undone the damage started by the Congress-led UPA government.

"He (Modi) has undone the damage started by the Congress-led UPA government which first explored a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China in 2007 and then joined the RCEP negotiations with fifteen countries including China in 2011-12," Nadda said in a statement.

He said under the strong and decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has ensured that the country`s interests are not compromised.

"Congress had hurriedly finalised very weak FTAs with ASEAN and South Korea in 2010 and Malaysia and Japan in 2011 opening Indian markets to imports with very little benefits in return," Nadda said.

The BJP working president said that during the UPA government between 2004 and 2014, India`s trade deficit with these countries increased 11 fold from $7 billion in 2004 to $78 billion in 2014.

"The Indian negotiators did not accept a bad deal on any issue and ensured that the concerns of India, particularly over the trade deficit and better market opportunities for Indian goods were put forth very strongly. Since several issues remained unresolved until today, Modi decided India will not join RCEP," he said.

Nadda said that the decision was taken by the Prime Minister to protect the interest of India`s MSMEs, dairy, farmers, pharmaceutical, steel, chemical and other manufacturing sectors against unfair imports.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has upheld Mahatma Gandhi`s principles and not accepted a deal which did not safeguard the interests of the poor. He is recognized the world over as a `tough negotiator` and he has once again demonstrated his resolve to protect the interest of the people of India at all times," Nadda added.

India had backed out from RCEP, upholding that the country remains committed to a comprehensive and balanced outcome of negotiations and seeks balance across goods, services and investments and also within each pillar.

PM Modi on SC verdict over Ayodhya dispute: Today's day marked as the 'Day of New India'

The Supreme Court in its historic judgment on Saturday called the judgment of the Allahabad High Court in Ayodhya land title dispute case, which had trifurcated 2.77 acres of the contested area between three parties in 2010, 'legally unsustainable'.

Passing a unanimous verdict on the case, a five-judge constitution bench of the apex court presided by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi ruled, "The three-way bifurcation by the High Court was legally unsustainable. The solution which commended itself to the High Court is not feasible. Dividing the land will not subserve the interest of either of the parties or secure a lasting sense of peace and tranquillity."

A 1045-page judgment came on a batch of petitions challenging the 2010 verdict of the Allahabad High Court.

The bench also comprising Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer directed the central government to form a trust to monitor the construction of a temple at the contested site and also directed that a five-acre plot to be allotted to Sunni Waqf Board for construction of a mosque.

The apex court said that no evidence was offered by the Muslim parties to indicate that they were in exclusive possession of the inner structure of the Mosque's dome.

It, however, said that there is evidence to indicate that namaz was offered within its precincts. The court added that there is "clear evidence" to establish that the Hindus worshiped in the outer courtyard.

"As regards to the inner courtyard, there is evidence on a preponderance of probabilities to establish worship by the Hindus prior to the annexation of Oudh by the British in 1857," the judgment stated.

The bench said that justice would not prevail if it were to overlook the entitlement of the Muslims. It also observed that the damage to the Babri mosque in 1934, its desecration in 1949 leading to the ouster of the Muslims and the eventual destruction on 6th December 1992 constituted a serious violation of the rule of law.

"They have been deprived of the structure of the mosque through means which should not have been employed in a secular nation committed to the rule of law," the judgment stated.

The contentions of Nirmohi Akhara, which was one of the litigants in the case, of being a shebait (devotee) were also rejected by the court.

It, however, asked the Central government to give it an appropriate role of management in the trust formed by the government to oversee the temple construction. The legal battle between the two parties dates back to the British era. The first appeal was, however, filed in 1950.

Nirmohi Akhara, one of the litigants in Ayodhya case, welcomed the Supreme Court's decision of giving it an "adequate representation in the trust" to be set up by the Central government for making necessary arrangements for the construction of the temple.

"Nirmohi Akhara is grateful that Supreme Court has recognised our fight of last 150 years and has given the Nirmohi Akhara adequate representation in the trust to be set up by the Central Government to build and manage the Shri Ram Janmasthan Temple," said Kartik Chopra, spokesperson, Nirmohi Akhara.

The Supreme Court on Saturday directed the Centre to give five acres of suitable land to Sunni Waqf Board and at the same time make necessary arrangements for the construction of the temple by forming a trust.

"Central government shall form in three to four months a scheme for setting up of a trust. They shall make necessary arrangements for the management of trust and construction of the temple," Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said while reading out the verdict.

A five-judge constitution bench presided by Chief Justice Gogoi and comprising Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer passed the order on a bunch of petitions against an order of the Allahabad High Court which trifurcated the site between the parties -- Ramlalla Virajman, Sunni Central Waqf Board and Nirmohi Akhara.

A decade-long legal dispute was fought by right-wing party Hindu Mahasabha, a sect of Hindu monks Nirmohi Akhara and Muslim Waqf Board over 2.77 acres of land in Ayodhya.

In a statement after meeting of Congress Working Committee, the party said it is the responsibility of every person to reaffirm the tradition of mutual respect and unity that has defined Indian society through the ages. The meeting of CWC, which is the highest decision-making body of the Congress, started in the morning ahead of the verdict of Supreme Court in the Ayodhya case. "The Indian National Congress respects the verdict of the Supreme Court in the Ayodhya case. We appeal to all the parties concerned and to all communities to abide by the secular values and spirit of fraternity enshrined in our Constitution and to maintain peace and harmony," the statement issued by CWC said. "It is the responsibility of each one of us to reaffirm our tradition of mutual respect and unity among all that has defined our society through the ages," the statement added. The meeting of CWC, earlier slated for Sunday, was preponed in view of the verdict of the apex court in the Ayodhya case. Party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that his party was in favour of the construction of Ram Temple. Taking a swipe at BJP for politicising the Ram Temple issue, he said ''This judgement not only opened the doors for the temple's construction but also closed the doors for BJP and others to politicise the issue''. A constitution bench of the Supreme Court, presided over by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, on Saturday directed the central government to form a trust for construction of the temple and said the five-acre plot of the suitable plot be allotted to Sunni Waqf Board for construction of a mosque.
