La Liga leaders Barcelona stumbled 1-0 at home against Leganes on Sunday as they suffered another blow in the Spanish title race. Atletico Madrid pulled level on points with the Catalans with a 1-0 victory of their own against Getafe earlier on, their 11th straight win across all competitions. Leganes defender Sergio Gonzalez headed home from a corner after four minutes for the visiting minnows and Barcelona missed a host of presentable chances as they failed to mount a comeback.

After a superb start to the season, Barcelona have lost three of their last six league games and won just one of those, seeing their lead whittled away. Hansi Flick's side lead third-place Real Madrid by a single point, after the champions drew at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, having played one extra game than both their closest title rivals.

"It was a messed-up game, it's impossible to be happy. I think we started the game half asleep," Pedri told DAZN. "We woke up, we created chances but we didn't have the spark we needed to get the goal... "We have to be better in front of goal if we want to win points, we're in a bad run in the league and we have to turn it around."

Barcelona started in the worst possible way as their former youth player Munir El Haddadi broke in down the right and forced a fine save from Inaki Pena at his near post. From the resulting corner Leganes took the lead, with Sergio Gonzalez powering a header home to stun the Olympic stadium into silence. From there Barcelona dominated against the visitors, 15th, and created several chances but found an inspired Marko Dmitrovic in their way.

Italy
Fiorentina lost ground in the Serie A title race on Sunday after falling to a 1-0 defeat at Bologna and missing the chance to claim a club-record ninth straight league win.
Raffaele Palladino's Fiorentina are fourth, six points behind league leaders Atalanta following a first league defeat in three months, albeit with a game in hand.
Jens Odgaard guided home the only goal of the game at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara to give Bologna their fifth win in seven matches in Italy's top flight.

Sunday's result moved Bologna up to seventh and three points behind Juventus, who sit in the Conference League spot, with a game in hand and gave coach Vincenzo Italiano a big win against his former club.
Italiano managed Fiorentina for three seasons, taking the Viola to two Europa Conference League finals and an Italian Cup final before joining Bologna in the summer.
Verona snapped a four-match losing streak by winning 3-2 at Parma, a result which lifted Paolo Zanetti's team out of the relegation zone and up to 16th place.
Como have dropped into the bottom three but can join Verona, Parma and Genoa -- who are at AC Milan in the day's late match -- on 15 points with a home win over Roma.
Italian media report that Verona, who have long had financial difficulties, are set to be sold to American private equity fund Presidio Investors.

Serie A: Fiorentina lose ground in title race with loss against Bologna

Spain
Alexander Sorloth earned Atletico Madrid an 11th straight victory with his goal sealing a 1-0 win over Getafe on Sunday in La Liga.
Diego Simeone's side have been in fine form and continued their winning run across all competitions with a deserved home triumph, pulling provisionally level with league leaders Barcelona.
Norwegian target man Sorloth came off the bench to head home the winner in the second half for his seventh league goal this season.

Atletico, second, lead rivals Real Madrid by a point after Los Blancos drew at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, while Barcelona host Leganes later Sunday.
"I'll repeat it, I'm boring, I won't change -- until the last day, we'll go game by game," Simeone told reporters when asked if his team could challenge for the title.
"I always say the best result is 1-0 because you work hard in defence and you're effective in attack, if you win 4-3 there are things you have to improve."
Atletico Madrid controlled the first half but could not put away the chances they created.
Two of the most inviting fell to winger Samuel Lino, but he failed to convert on both occasions.
Giuliano Simeone crossed for the Brazilian and he poked the ball wide, before firing off-target again after Rodrigo De Paul played him in with a clever lob.
Argentine midfielder De Paul, on a strong run of form, swept a shot wide as the hosts continued to dominate at the Metropolitano stadium.
David Soria saved from Julian Alvarez shortly before the teams went in goalless at the break. Pablo Barrios fired narrowly off-target before Atletico took the lead in the 69th minute.
Substitute Sorloth peeled off his marker at the far post and placed a header back across goal and into the net from Nahuel Molina's cross.
Molina was another reinforcement brought on by Simeone, with Atletico's impressive squad depth telling.
"Before the game I spoke with the players about thanking and recognising those who weren't going to start the game," said Simeone.
"There are very important players who are competing in an extraordinary way, and you can tell that when they come into the team.
"That is our strength, to compete in the way we want, we need everyone to be as involved as they (currently) are, it's our biggest strength."
Getafe pushed for a leveller but it was Atletico who came closer to scoring in the final stages, with Angel Correa running through on goal but between Soria and two defenders, the visitors managed to thwart him.

La Liga: Atletico Madrid continue to run hot, beat Getafe for 11th straight win

Diogo Jota rescued Liverpool as the Premier League leaders recovered from Andy Robertson's early red card to snatch a 2-2 draw with Fulham, while Arsenal's title challenge was dented by a goalless stalemate against Everton on Saturday.

With just four minutes left at Anfield, Arne Slot's side were in danger of losing for just the second time in 15 top-flight games this season.&nbsp;

But Jota grabbed a valuable equaliser as Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 19 matches since a loss to Nottingham Forest in September.

With last weekend's Merseyside derby at Everton postponed by severe weather, Liverpool have now gone two league games without a win following their 3-3 draw at Newcastle.

The Reds sit five points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who can close the gap with a win against Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Liverpool were rocked in the 11th minute as Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira met Antonee Robinson's cross with an agile volley that deflected in off Robertson.

The Reds suffered another blow when Scotland left-back Robertson was sent off in the 17th minute for a professional foul on Harry Wilson.

But Slot's men have made a habit of coming from behind this season and Cody Gakpo equalised in the 47th minute with a stooping header from Mohamed Salah's cross.

The Dutch forward's ninth goal in all competitions this season was the prelude to a period of sustained Liverpool pressure.

But Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz delivered a sucker punch as he bundled over the line from Robinson's cross in the 76th minute.

That set the stage for a dramatic finale as Jota levelled in the 86th minute with a cool finish past Bernd Leno from the edge of the area.

"I don't think I could have asked for more from my players, especially after going down to 10 men," Slot said.

"It's an emotional game. It's good to see our performance after so many setbacks."

Arsenal failed to take advantage of Liverpool's rare stumble as the Gunners were kept at bay on a frustrating afternoon at the Emirates Stadium.

<h2>Lack of firepower</h2>

The north Londoners have become a force from set-pieces, scoring 23 goals from corners since the start of last season.

But their lack of firepower outside of that route has been questioned this season and once again they were hampered by a failure to turn pressure and possession into goals.

After a second successive league draw, third-placed Arsenal remain six points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand on last season's runners-up.

"We fully deserved to win the game," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. "It's Frustrating, especially when we concede zero chances and dominate the game so much."

Newcastle handed Ruud van Nistelrooy his first defeat as Leicester boss with a 4-0 rout at St James' Park.

Former Manchester United striker Van Nistelrooy had taken four points from his first two games since replacing the sacked Steve Cooper.

But Newcastle ended that encouraging start as Jacob Murphy struck in the 30th minute and Bruno Guimaraes nodded the second goal in the 47th minute.

Alexander Isak bagged the Magpies' third two minutes later and Murphy netted again on the hour to leave Leicester two points above the relegation zone.

Jack Taylor's stoppage-time goal gave Ipswich a priceless 2-1 win over relegation rivals Wolves at Molineux.

Kieran McKenna's team went ahead through Matt Doherty's 15th-minute own goal.

Just as Wolves fans were calling for owners Fosun to sell the club, Matheus Cunha grabbed a 72nd-minute equaliser.

But Taylor headed home from a 94th-minute corner to seal Ipswich's second league win since their promotion to the top tier.

Third-bottom Ipswich are just one point adrift of safety, while second-bottom Wolves are three points behind them after an 11th loss in 16 league games piled further pressure on boss Gary O'Neil.

Two goals from Jae-sung Lee lifted Mainz to a shock 2-1 home win over Bayern Munich on Saturday, handing coach Vincent Kompany his first league loss.

Lee scored in each half against an uncharacteristically poor Bayern, who are now just four points clear after Bayer Leverkusen's 2-0 win at Augsburg.

"We played against a team with a lot of life and spirit and who was prepared to fight for every moment. Today we weren't at our best," Kompany said.&nbsp;

"We'll use the defeat today to build fire into the game on Friday (at home to RB Leipzig) because that's the only way we can provide an answer."

Injuries meant Kompany was unable to call on several first-team regulars including Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and Joao Palhinha.

Kane's absence was particularly telling in the first half, with the league leaders dominating possession but unable to convert any of their half chances into a goal.&nbsp;

Mainz boasted a better-than-expected home record against the German giants, having won three of their past four home league games over Bayern.&nbsp;

The home side struck shortly before half-time, Lee taking advantage of a poor clearance from his South Korea teammate Min-Jae Kim to hammer home.&nbsp;

Even with the knowledge that Leverkusen were ahead in Augsburg, Bayern came out poorer after half-time, lacking precision and energy.&nbsp;

Mainz soon capitalised through Lee again. Armindo Sieb threaded a clever cross goalwards for Lee to collect before blasting home on the spin.&nbsp;

Leroy Sane tapped in a deflected Joshua Kimmich shot in the 87th minute to give the league leaders hope, but Mainz held firm for a famous home win.&nbsp;

The result moved Mainz, who battled relegation last season, up to sixth.&nbsp;

Defending champions Leverkusen continued their recent resurgence, winning comfortably 2-0 at Augsburg, their seventh victory in a row.&nbsp;

Martin Terrier put Leverkusen in front 14 minutes in, curling the ball home with his first touch after a lovely low cross from Jeremie Frimpong.&nbsp;

Florian Wirtz added a second in the 40th minute when he controlled the ball, sold the Augsburg defence a dummy before skipping a shot across the grass and into the bottom corner.&nbsp;

Liverpool, United Kingdom
Diogo Jota rescued Liverpool as the Premier League leaders recovered from Andy Robertson's early red card to snatch a 2-2 draw with Fulham, while Arsenal's title challenge was dented by a goalless stalemate against Everton on Saturday.
With just four minutes left at Anfield, Arne Slot's side were in danger of losing for just the second time in 15 top-flight games this season.

Nottingham Forest host Aston Villa in a battle of top-four contenders in Saturday's late game.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique insisted Saturday the statistics indicate "the best season" of his career as he brushed aside talk of tensions with some of his players.

"Statistically, it's my best as a coach. Even if you (the media) criticise, that there are lies invented, it's my best in terms of numbers, chances generated by us, by the opponents, it's the best," the Spaniard said ahead of Sunday's league match against Lyon.

Ligue 1: PSG coach Luis Enrique insists having 'my best' season

England were placed in a group with Serbia as the draw for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Europe took place on Friday.

As they prepare to begin life under new coach Thomas Tuchel, England were also drawn alongside Albania, Latvia and Andorra in the five-team Group K.

England, who have qualified for every World Cup since missing the 1994 tournament in the United States, played Serbia in their opening game at Euro 2024, winning 1-0 thanks to a Jude Bellingham goal.

Matches will take place between March and November next year, with the group winners qualifying directly for the World Cup in North America.

The runners-up in each of the 12 qualifying groups will get a second chance via a series of play-offs, with Europe now contributing a total of 16 nations to the expanded 48-team competition.

The exact make-up of the groups is not yet completely clear as it depends on the outcome of the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals next March.

Those ties will see reigning European champions Spain face the Netherlands, while Germany play Italy, Portugal take on Denmark and France meet Croatia.

The groups in which these teams end up depend on whether they win and progress to the Nations League semi-finals next June, or are eliminated.

France, who have been to the last two World Cup finals, will be in a group with Ukraine, Iceland and Azerbaijan should they reach the Nations League final four.

However, should they go out of the Nations League to Croatia in the last eight, they will go into World Cup qualifying Group L with the Czech Republic, Montenegro, Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.

Reigning European champions Spain, who also won the last edition of the Nations League, will be in a group with Turkey, Georgia and Bulgaria should they defeat the Netherlands in their quarter-final.

The loser of Spain's tie against the Dutch will be placed in Group G with Poland, Finland, Lithuania and Malta.

There are six groups of five teams who will begin qualifying in March, while the six groups of four teams will only start next September.

Scotland, who are bidding to qualify for a first World Cup since 1998, were drawn in Group C in which they will play Greece, Belarus and the loser of the Nations League quarter-final between Portugal and Denmark.

Greece and Scotland are also due to play each other in a play-off next March to decide who is in the top tier of the next edition of the Nations League.

Wales were drawn in the same group as Belgium, as was already the case in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, when both teams made it to the finals in Qatar.

Those sides will also come up against North Macedonia, Kazakhstan and minnows Liechtenstein in Group J.

UEFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers: England to face Serbia, Albania in group stage

Arne Slot insisted Darwin Nunez is still an important part of Liverpool's plans despite the struggling striker falling below the "standard" in the Champions League win against Girona. Mired in a lengthy slump, Nunez has scored only one goal in his last 10 appearances and three in total all season. In Liverpool's victory in Girona on Tuesday, the Uruguay international cut an increasingly frustrated figure after missing several chances.

Slot admitted he kept Nunez on for an extended period, before eventually replacing him in the 71st minute, in the hope he would score a confidence-boosting goal. After receiving criticism in midweek, Nunez posted on Instagram: "They are not all, they are some. Thank you Reds for your support, we are all still together."

Slot believes the 25-year-old needs the support of fans and his team-mates to help him rediscover the form that made him such a sensation at Benfica prior to his move to Anfield in 2022.

"All our players feel the support of our fans but he is definitely one of them. Mo (Salah) is scoring so many goals he likes the support of the fans but doesn't really need it at the moment," Slot told reporters on Friday. "We all saw they did something with him when he missed a few chances on Tuesday and everyone needs an arm around you, either from a team-mate, the fans or your manager.

"But I also made it clear to him that he is not only judged on the goals he scores, he is also judged on the team performance and he adds something to the team performance as well with his work-rate and how much he does winning the ball back high up the pitch."

<h2>- 'Disappointed' -</h2>

Slot's only issue with Nunez was a dip in his work-rate against Girona that drew a rebuke from the Reds boss. "Ideally he would have scored a few goals more. But what should always be there is work-rate and I think that is what he has, apart from two games," Slot said.

I said that to him yesterday and the last half-hour against Girona wasn't of the standard he should have. "That had a lot to do with him being disappointed at missing a few chances."

Nunez's position will come under increasing pressure with Diogo Jota and long-term absentee Federico Chiesa set to return to the squad for the visit of Fulham on Saturday.

Chiesa has played for just 18 minutes in the Premier League since joining Liverpool from Juventus in the close-season. The Italy forward has only three appearances in all competitions for the Reds, who sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League as they chase a first title since 2020.

"Federico missed quite a lot for a long time, was ill last week, so we have to wait and see how he is exactly doing," Slot said. "But maybe Diogo is in the squad and maybe Federico as well, but that depends a bit on the numbers we have and also how he recovered from his illness."

Real Madrid confirm Kylian Mbappe's left thigh injury after Atalanta clash

An investigation into alleged rape and sexual assault in Stockholm which Swedish media said targeted Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been closed due to insufficient evidence, the Swedish prosecutor said Thursday. The 25-year-old French star, one of the most high-profile players in world football, visited the Swedish capital on October 9-11 with a group of people after he was not selected by his country for a Nations League match.

Sweden's prosecution authority announced on October 15 that it was investigating an alleged incident that occurred at an upscale Stockholm hotel on October 10 without mentioning the suspect by name.&nbsp;Several Swedish media outlets, including newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen and public broadcaster SVT, identified Mbappe as the suspect. "My assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore closed," prosecutor Marina Chirakova said in a statement that also did not mention Mbappe by name.

Chirakova said the suspect had "not been notified of suspicion of a crime". Mbappe's lawyer said in October that he was&nbsp;"shocked" to see his name linked to the investigation.

Speaking for the first time about the case on Sunday, he told French television show Clique he was "not involved". "I haven't received anything, no summons... I'm not involved," he said.

According to Aftonbladet, Mbappe and his entourage dined at a restaurant one evening before going to a nightclub.&nbsp;Aftonbladet said the complaint was filed on October 12 after the alleged victim had sought medical attention.

Expressen reported that police had seized some clothing as evidence, saying it consisted of women's underwear, a pair of black trousers and a black top. Photographs showed police officers leaving the hotel with brown bags. Mbappe has had a difficult season since moving to reigning European champions Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, failing to find his top form.

However, the Frenchman scored in Madrid's 3-2 win against Italian side Atalanta on Tuesday, which revived Real's flagging bid to regain their Champions League title.

Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham were all on the scoresheet in Bergamo as Madrid moved up to 20th place in the Champions League table, on nine points from six matches.

Sweden ends rape inquiry allegedly targeting France star Kylian Mbappe

The Australian football players union has slammed the international football governing body FIFA after it awarded 2034 Men’s FIFA World Cup hosting rights to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday (Dec 11). The decision to award Saudi Arabia the hosting rights did not go well with the players union citing significant human rights are at risk. After Qatar, Saudi Arabia will be the second West Asian nation to host the men’s FIFA World Cup with the former hosting the showpiece in 2022 December.

<h2>Australian players union slams FIFA</h2>

"The significant human rights risks linked to this tournament are well-documented," Beau Busch, Professional Footballers Australia head said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Thursday.

"By securing hosting rights to the global game’s most prestigious event, Saudi Arabia and FIFA must ensure the rights of everyone affected by the 2034 Men’s World Cup are upheld and safeguarded.

"However, FIFA’s ongoing governance failures and lack of accountability to its own human rights commitments leave no assurance that harm can or will be prevented."

Saudi Arabia has been accused by the Australian Association of human rights abuses while LGBT activists have also showcased their anger after the FIFA World Cup rights were awarded. In the build-up to the meeting and before awarding of rights, migrant workers groups and trade unions had also raised concerns over Saudi Arabia.

On the football side of things, another Men’s World Cup in West Asia will result in significant fixture changes to football’s annual calendar. Like Qatar, Saudi will most probably host the World Cup in November-December, differing from the usual international break of June-July. This would result in fixture congestion in build-up and post-tournament.

The club fixture calendar will also take a significant hit with the season likely to start in late July or early August, before ending in late May or early June. &nbsp;

Australian players union blasts FIFA for awarding 2034 World Cup hosting rights to Saudi Arabia

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup, underlining the Gulf kingdom's growing influence in world sport despite criticism of the country's human rights record.

At the same time, a virtual Congress of world football's governing body confirmed that Morocco, Spain and Portugal will be joint hosts of the 2030 World Cup, in which three games will also be played in South America.

The Saudi bid was waved through by acclamation during the meeting of FIFA's 211 national member associations, with no rivals standing in its way.

"It is a proud day, a day of celebration, a day that we invite the entire world to Saudi Arabia," said Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal al Saud, the Saudi Minister of Sports.

"We intend to have an extraordinary version of the World Cup in our kingdom."

However, there was immediate condemnation from rights groups who insisted that handing the organisation of the tournament to the country puts the lives of construction workers at risk and "marks a moment of great danger".

FIFA had invoked its principle of rotating the World Cup between continents, which meant only bids from Asia or Oceania were welcome for 2034.

The unprecedented organisation of the 2030 tournament will involve three continental confederations in Europe, Africa and South America, while the next World Cup in 2026 -- the first involving 48 teams -- will take place across North America.

Controversially, the body gave potential bidders barely a month last year to submit candidacies, and Australia and Indonesia quickly abandoned their interest.

That left Saudi Arabia as the sole candidate, clearing the way for the World Cup to return to the Gulf region so soon after Qatar hosted in 2022.

The kingdom's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been using sport for some time to amass influence and improve its global image -- critics, though, say he is effectively "sportswashing" by diverting attention from Saudi Arabia's rights record.

<h2>'Moment of great danger'</h2>

The awarding of the World Cup to Saudi will make the issue of human rights a major talking point again, just as it was two years ago.

"We are inclusive and we are non-discriminatory, and we want to obtain positive social impact," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in closing remarks.

"We are of course aware of critics and fears, and I fully trust our hosts to address all open points from this process and deliver a FIFA World Cup which meets expectations."

He added that "social improvements and positive human rights impacts" are the "responsibilities of hosting a World Cup."

Rights groups highlight mass executions in Saudi Arabia and allegations of torture, as well as restrictions on women under the conservative country's male guardianship system. Free expression is severely restricted too.

FIFA's decision to award the tournament to Saudi Arabia "despite the well-known and severe risks to residents, migrant workers and visiting fans alike, marks a moment of great danger," Amnesty International and 20 other organisations said in a joint statement.&nbsp;

"Based on clear evidence to date, FIFA knows workers will be exploited and even die without fundamental reforms in Saudi Arabia, and yet has chosen to press ahead regardless," said Steve Cockburn, Amnesty's Head of Labour Rights and Sport.

<h2>'Centenary celebration'</h2>

The 2030 tournament will mark a century since the first World Cup was held in Uruguay, and as a result the unrivalled joint bid by Morocco, Spain and Portugal will also see the South American nation handed one game along with Argentina and Paraguay.

FIFA confirmed over a year ago that the joint proposal led by Morocco, Spain and Portugal was the sole contender for 2030, with all other potential candidacies having fallen by the wayside.

Four South American countries launched a joint bid in 2019, convinced that the centenary World Cup should entirely take place on the same continent where it all began.

Meanwhile, Morocco replaced Ukraine as a partner for Spain and Portugal, while South America agreed to step aside in exchange for hosting three games.

Following these "centenary celebrations" in the southern hemisphere winter, the six teams involved will cross the Atlantic to play the rest of the tournament.

Spain, which hosted the 1982 World Cup, should be the centrepiece as it boasts 11 of the 20 proposed stadiums.

Morocco -- after failing on five previous occasions to be awarded the staging of the tournament -- will become the second African nation to host the competition after South Africa in 2010.

Potential venues for the July 21 final include the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid and Barcelona's renovated Camp Nou as well as the planned Hassan II stadium between Casablanca and Rabat, set to boast a capacity of 115,000.

"It is a proud day, a day of celebration, a day that we invite the entire world to Saudi Arabia," said Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal al Saud, the Saudi Minister of Sports. "We intend to have an extraordinary version of the World Cup in our kingdom." However, there was immediate condemnation from rights groups who insisted that handing the organisation of the tournament to the country puts the lives of construction workers at risk and "marks a moment of great danger". FIFA had invoked its principle of rotating the World Cup between continents, which meant only bids from Asia or Oceania were welcome for 2034. FIFA World Cup: Saudi Arabia becomes 2034 host; Morocco, Spain and Portugal to co-host in 2030

Mohamed Salah helped maintain Liverpool's perfect record in the Champions League on Tuesday while holders Real Madrid bounced back from their defeat at Anfield to topple in-form Italians Atalanta.&nbsp;

Elsewhere, struggling Paris Saint-Germain gained a vital win at Salzburg, while Bayer Leverkusen edged Inter Milan to move second.

Aston Villa, in their first appearance in the continent's elite club competition for 41 years, maintained their bright progress beating Leipzig 3-2 to sit third.

The first eight teams qualify directly for the last 16 with those placed ninth to 24 entering a play-off round.

In Spain, Salah's 63rd-minute penalty proved decisive against dogged debutants Girona to extend the Premier League leaders' record to six from six in the revamped format of Europe's flagship club competition.

Under new coach Arne Slot Liverpool are virtually assured a place in the last 16.

"If you ask me about all six games, I'm really pleased with all the results... (but) I'm far from pleased about the performance tonight," Slot told reporters in Girona.

"(We had) hardly any control at all over the game, maybe the second half was a bit better but then I'm trying to be positive."

Salah sent Paulo Gazzaniga the wrong way to net his 50th Champions League goal, pulling the Egyptian level with Filippo Inzaghi as the 10th highest goalscorer of all-time in the competition.

The winger is out of contract at the end of the season but his 16 goals across all competitions have been essential in Liverpool's superb first half of the season.

While Liverpool are sitting pretty with two league phase rounds to come early next year, kings of Europe Real Madrid, beaten 2-0 by Liverpool last time out, have work to do to ensure their progress into the knockout phase.

Kylian Mbappe gave Real a 10th minute lead before hobbling off injured in Atalanta, his strike was cancelled out by Charles de Ketelaere's penalty in first-half additional time.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti started Vinicius Junior for the first time since a hamstring problem last month. The Brazilian had Real back on top before the hour, with Jude Bellingham also on the scoresheet for a 3-2 win over the Serie a leaders.

The hard-fought victory moved Real up to 18th on nine points and will have helped to settle any nerves at the 15-time European champions ahead of games against Salzburg and Brest in January.

PSG put the wheels back on their stuttering campaign with a much needed 3-0 defeat on the road at Salzburg.

The French champions went into this encounter in 25th with just four points and three goals scored after five matches.

They approach their last two league outings in provisional 24th - the final berth for the play-offs ahead of Wednesday's games.

Bayern swept aside Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk in Gelsenkirchen 5-1. Fellow Bundesliga giants Leverkusen became the first team to score against Inter in this year's competition in a 1-0 win that lifted them five points adrift of Liverpool at the top of the league.

Another noteworthy performance on matchday six came on the Brittany coast where modest French Ligue 1 outfit Brest dished out a 1-0 defeat to former European champions PSV Eindhoven.

It left the Atlantic port city club flying high in fifth in their first ever appearance at European football's high table.

In other games, Celtic and Dinamo Zagreb remained in contention for the knockout round after an uninspiring 0-0 draw and Club Brugge beat Sporting 2-1.

Headline matches on Wednesday include Manchester city at Juventus, and Barcelona at Borussia Dortmund.

Champions League: Real Madrid down Atalanta in key clash, Mohamed Salah keeps Liverpool perfect

Real Madrid extended their European dominance on 2 June 2024 after clinching their 15th Champions League title with a 2-0 win over German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund. The contest played at the Wembley Stadium in London saw Real add to their already impressive trophy cabinet while Dortmund lost their second final at the venue having suffered the same fate against Bayern Munich in 2013.

<h2>Real Madrid win 15th Champions League title</h2>

Entering as the favourites to win the Champions League final, Real were completely outplayed in the opening half after Karim Adeyemi had a series of chances. The German youngster almost opened the scoring at the midway point in the first half but failed to capitalise on a thorough ball. Minutes later he again was at the center of things when Dortmund unlocked Real defence and found Niclas Füllkrug who hit the post.

After a quiet first half, Real made some adjustments and got the reward in the 74th minute when a corner was met with a looping header by defender Dani Carvajal who notched the opening goal. The lead was vital as Dortmund were left with no option back to open the backdoors and attack at full throttle. This left their defence vulnerable and provided Real Madrid with openings to score a second goal.

Eventually, in the 83rd minute, the 2022 Champions League winner Vinicius Jr scored the second goal and sealed Real’s 15th title in the competition. Dortmund had a late Füllkrug effort in the Real goal, but it was ruled out for offside.

<h2>Real extend dominance</h2>

The title was Real’s sixth in the last 11 seasons of the Champions League as they now stand tall with 15 titles overall. Departing heroes Toni Kross, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernandez added a sixth Champions League title to their tally taking them level with Francisco Gento who achieved the same feat with Real Madrid in the 1960s.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti also won his fifth Champions League title, third with Real as he too extended his legacy in the competition. He also had won two titles with AC Milan in his playing days.

Real’s title win also saw them complete the season with a double of La Liga and Champions League. The Los Blancos would later beat Atlanta in the UEFA Super Cup in August as they showcased their dominance at the continental level.

Premier League official David Coote was sacked on Monday after referee chiefs described his position as "untenable" over a video making derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Premier League: Referee David Coote sacked over Jurgen Klopp rant video

Manchester City might be deep in a crisis which is unprecedented under iconic coach Pep Guardiola but on Wednesday the wobbling English champions take on a Juventus team with troubles of their own.

Juventus were booed and whistled by their supporters on Saturday night when they struggled back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at the death with mid-table Bologna.

Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australian-champion-cyclist-rohan-dennis-admits-lesser-charge-after-wifes-death-report-782896">Australian champion cyclist Rohan Dennis admits lesser charge after wife's death: Report</a>

Fans, who were expecting a change of tune when coach Thiago Motta left Bologna to replace Massimiliano Allegri in the summer, have been frustrated by a run of four straight draws which have left Juve off the pace at home and in Europe.

Had Juve not been in such uninspiring form Wednesday would have been a perfect opportunity to leapfrog City in the Champions League table, where the Italians sit 19th, behind their Premier League opponents on goal difference.

"I don't think there is a best time to play Manchester City, but we will face the match as we always do, by trying to stop them from playing their football and impose our own play on them," said Motta on Saturday.

Juve have drawn 11 of their 20 matches in all competitions this season and are seven points behind new Serie A leaders Atalanta after 15 matches, not the start that the club were hoping for.

Two wins from nine matches in all competitions, a run which includes a fully deserved home defeat to Stuttgart in October, have set the alarm bells ringing to the point that Agnelli family figurehead John Elkann visited the club's Continassa training ground on Monday.

Elkann is the CEO of Exor, the holding company of the Agnellis who have long controlled Juve and are as close to a royal family as Italy has had since the country became a republic in 1946.

<h2>No excuses</h2>

"We're a young team and we need to improve in all departments, both physically and mentally," Motta told reporters on Tuesday.

"But we have shown more than once that we have a lot of character, we play well as a unit... We have the potential to improve in all areas."

Motta has not been helped by a huge injury crisis which has ravaged his squad in the first half of the campaign and looked on Saturday to have also taken full-back Andrea Cambiaso.

Fortunately for Motta, Cambiaso's ankle knock, which led to him being substituted early against Bologna, is less serious than initially feared and the Italian could be fit for Wednesday, while Douglas Luiz should be back for selection in midfield after two months on the sidelines.

Weston McKennie is also set to return to the Juve squad after missing their last three matches, but Motta is still without at least four players with defenders Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal unavailable until the end of the season.

"I've never used it as an excuse. Every team goes through cycles, the most important thing is facing difficulties head on and that's what we've done," added Motta.

Motta does at least have a recognised centre-forward as Dusan Vlahovic returned to club action against Bologna and provided the pass from which Samuel Mbangula levelled in stoppage time.

Vlahovic's deputy Arkadiusz Milik has been sidelined with an injury to the meniscus in his left knee since June, the Pole undergoing in November a second operation to resolve the problem.

Champions League: Juventus under pressure against struggling Manchester City

Mikel Arteta praised his Arsenal team for how they have coped with a punishing defensive injury crisis as he prepares his men to face Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Gunners are seventh in the new-look Champions League format after three wins in five matches -- one place above the Ligue 1 team.

But Arteta, whose men are also third in the Premier League, is juggling a lengthy injury list.

Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori, who both missed Sunday's draw at Fulham, were absent from Tuesday's training session, along with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey.

Right-backs Ben White&nbsp;and Takehiro Tomiyasu are still absent with knee injuries.

"We have to manage a lot of the players, so they're probably not going to be fit for tomorrow and are a doubt," Arteta said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

"I still have 24 hours to make those decisions and hopefully the right ones.... In the ideal scenario, we have to be in charge to make those decisions because it's forcing us to make it for the wrong reasons, but as well, we need to accept the reality and move forwards."

Arsenal stumbled at the start of last month but won four straight games in all competitions before Sunday's 1-1 draw.

But the Spaniard said he was happy with how his men were coping in the absence of a settled back line.

"The good news is that the team still reacts and plays in the way that we want and becomes so dominant, and we want to do that regardless of who plays and I think that belief is within the team and it's really positive," he said.

Arteta said there was an opportunity for defender Kieran Tierney to return -- the 27-year-old Scotland international has yet to feature this season.

"He is ready and he's training really well and he's going to have an opportunity for sure with the way the team is looking at the moment," he said.

"It's for that reason and because he's earned it as well with the way he's behaved and the way he's been with us."

West Ham stars Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek dedicated Monday's vital 2-1 win over Wolves to Michail Antonio as their team-mate recovers from a horrific car crash.

Hammers fans held a minute's applause for Antonio in the ninth minute to match his shirt number.

And on a night when Antonio was never far from West Ham's thoughts, Bowen celebrated his superb 72nd minute winner by holding aloft his team-mate's jersey.

"That meant everything. To share that moment, he's not here with us but I'm sure he was watching and the fans, you heard them. An emotional couple of days," Bowen said.

Soucek had put West Ham ahead before Matt Doherty's equaliser and the Czech midfielder admitted it was an emotional moment.

"The goal was for him. I dedicated it to him. I said before the game I really wanted to score even more today," Soucek said.&nbsp;

"He's been here since I came here. He is really my favourite. I said it would be tough for me to play without him.

"I'm happy that he is doing fine. He is a massive player and he is in my heart. It was really tough for us.&nbsp;

"I was so scared what was going to happen. It was a really tough week for him, his family and us."

Antonio, who had appeared in all of West Ham's Premier League games this term prior to the crash, is being monitored in hospital after his operation.

Premier League: West Ham stars dedicate vital win to Michail Antonio after horror car crash

Bengaluru FC defeated Kerala Blasters by 4-2 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 tonight, as a hat-trick by Sunil Chhetri inspired the Blues to clinch all three points in this edition of the Southern Rivalry. At 40 years and 126 days, Chhetri became the oldest hat-trick scorer in the ISL - surpassing Bartholomew Ogbeche who did it for Hyderabad FC against FC Goa at 38 years and 96 days old in January 2023.

Despite holding only 36.4 per cent&nbsp;of total possession, Bengaluru FC were clinical in converting the limited opportunities that they created - as four of their five shots on target resulted in goals.

The duo of Chhetri and Ryan Williams were critical in helping the Blues take a 2-0 advantage in the first half of the game.

The home side was pressing forward from the onset, exploring a host of opportunities to find the back of the net. Williams was central in that endeavour, driving to the flank with the ball before lobbing in a precise cross for Chhetri in the eighth minute. The striker timed his run to perfection and thundered in the assist to break the deadlock.&nbsp;

From provider, Williams turned the scorer in the 38th minute. Operating in the final third, Williams received a pass from Edgar Mendez at the edge of the box on the right side. Instead of playing a short pass forward, the former curled in an excellent shot into the top left corner to add another goal to his side’s tally.&nbsp;

Kerala Blasters FC entered the second essay of the match with arguably greater intensity, taking the game to the opposition. Noah Sadaoui played a key role in that, setting up an assist for Jesus Jimenez in the 56th minute. Whilst the pass was straightforward, Jimenez’s left-footed effort found its way into the centre of the goal to cut the deficit.&nbsp;

With momentum swaying in their favour, Kerala Blasters FC equalised the scores in the 67th minute. Freddy Lallawmawma’s exceptional aerial abilities came to the fore as Adrian Luna’s cross following a corner was met accurately by the former from the left side of the six-yard box to the bottom left corner.&nbsp;

Bengaluru FC immediately got together and their seasoned frontline took the lead in that. Six minutes later, Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Chhetri interlinked in the attacking half, as the Argentine orchestrated the goal with his accurate pass from a fast break, picking the latter on the centre of the box. Chhetri deposited the ball into the bottom left corner.

To his credit, Chhetri kept finding himself in goal-scoring opportunities and that was consistent right until the end of the game. In the added time of the second half, Chinglensana Singh turned to Chhetri following a set-piece scenario and the striker was perfectly positioned in the middle of the 18-yard area. His finishing finesse was visible again, as he slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to complete a treble of goals. &nbsp;

Key Performer of the Match

Sunil Chhetri (Bengaluru FC)

Chhetri delivered an all-round outing, making two crosses, three tackles, in addition to netting a terrific hat-trick too.&nbsp;

Premier League: Manchester City fail to win again, play draw against Crystal Palace

Ruben Amorim has described Manchester United as a ‘massive club but not a massive team’ as the side goes through a period of transition. Speaking on Friday (Dec 6) ahead of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Old Trafford, Amorim said his side is in a difficult position and will need to regroup to win big trophies in the future. United will start the Premier League weekend in 13th place, having only mustered 19 points from 14 matches so far in the season.

"Our players have to understand that it's a challenging position. We're not one of the best teams in the league and we have to say and think that clearly but our past, our club is maybe the best one in the league.”

In October, the Red Devils sacked FA Cup-winning coach Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the season. He was replaced by Ruud van Nistelrooy on an interim basis before Amorim’s arrival as permanent head coach. The Portuguese gaffer suffered his first defeat of the season on Wednesday after a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

It was also his first defeat of the season as manager, having gone unbeaten during his spell at Sporting Lisbon.

With Forest enjoying a stellar 2024-25 season, Saturday's late kick-off won’t be an easy ride for the Old Trafford outfit. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side is on 22 points in the seventh place, but a win for United will see them go level on points with the former European champions. In positive news for the Amorim’s side, summer signing Leny Yoro is set to be available having missed the start of the season due to an injury.
