Former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/spanish-football">Spanish football</a> federation chief Luis Rubiales told his trial on Tuesday he was "totally sure" Jenni Hermoso consented to his kiss on her lips in 2023 that sparked global outrage.
The case has riveted the country since opening on February 3 and has turned Hermoso into an icon of the fight against macho culture and sexism in sport.
Rubiales was forced to resign in disgrace in 2023 after kissing Hermoso following Spain's triumph at that year's Women's World Cup in Australia.

Rubiales, 47, told Spain's National Court he was "totally sure" Hermoso consented to the kiss during the medal ceremony after the final.&nbsp;"She squeezed me very tightly under my armpits, she lifted me, and when I came down I asked her if I can give you a kiss, and she said 'OK', that's what happened," he said.
"What happened had no importance neither for me nor for her," Rubiales added during his highly anticipated testimony, describing the kiss as "an act of affection".
An expert in lip reading had told the court on Tuesday that Rubiales asked Hermoso "can I give you a kiss?" based on video footage where the star player's face could not be seen.
Rubiales conceded he "made a mistake" on the podium and that his behaviour "was not appropriate", saying he should have "been in a more institutional role", but denied any offence had been committed.
<h2>Hermoso 'overwhelmed'</h2>
Hermoso told the opening day of the trial she felt "disrespected" after a non-consensual kiss that "should not happen in any social or work setting".
Her teammates have described how she cried and felt "overwhelmed" following the incident, while her brother Rafael Hermoso has said she came under pressure to downplay the incident to save Rubiales.
Rubiales denied the charge of coercion, saying he did not participate in the drafting of a statement in Hermoso's name that sought to calm the growing furore.&nbsp; He said Hermoso rejected a suggestion to appear in a video alongside him and instead "wanted to celebrate the World Cup".
Rubiales responded with a blunt "no" when the prosecutor asked him if he had manipulated people close to Hermoso to put pressure on the all-time top scorer for the national women's team.
Prosecutors are also seeking 18 months' jail against former women's team manager Jorge Vilda and two ex-federation officials, Ruben Rivera and Albert Luque, for alleged coercion.
<h2>Fall from grace</h2>
Rubiales minimised the importance of the kiss on Hermoso at the time and defied calls for his resignation at an emergency federation meeting in August 2023, railing against "false feminism".
He resigned in September that year after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/fifa">FIFA</a> suspended him and Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation into alleged sexual assault.
Rubiales embraced controversy during his tumultuous five-year reign at the helm of the football federation.&nbsp; He expanded the Spanish Super Cup to a four-team format and signed a lucrative deal to move the competition to Saudi Arabia, angering traditionalists and human rights activists.
Prosecutors are also investigating alleged financial irregularities totalling millions of euros related to the Super Cup relocation that involved a company owned by former Barcelona great <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gerard-pique">Gerard Pique</a>.&nbsp;
Rubiales has dismissed the allegations as "falsehoods".

Following a remarkable 2024 campaign that included 24 tournaments across 16 countries, Premier Padel continues its global expansion, bringing elite competition to Saudi Arabia. <h2>What is Padel?</h2>
Padel is a fast-growing racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. Played on an enclosed court about a third the size of a tennis court, padel is always played in doubles. The game is known for its fast-paced rallies, strategic play off the walls, and accessibility&mdash;making it enjoyable for both beginners and professionals. Unlike tennis, players serve underhand, and the walls can be used to keep the ball in play, adding an exciting dynamic to the game.
<h2>What are the basic rules?</h2>
Padel follows a set of rules similar to tennis but with some unique differences. The game is played in doubles on an enclosed court with glass walls and mesh fencing. The scoring system is the same as in tennis, following the sequence of 15, 30, 40, and game.
The serve is always underhand and must be hit diagonally into the opponent&rsquo;s service box after bouncing once behind the service line. If the ball hits the net and lands in the correct box, it is considered a let, and the serve is replayed. Players must allow the ball to bounce once before returning it, except for volleys, which are allowed. The ball can also be played off the glass walls after bouncing, similar to squash, but it cannot hit the walls before bouncing on the ground.
Each team is allowed only one bounce before returning the ball, and if the ball bounces twice, the opponent wins the point. Players can hit the ball before or after it touches the walls, but it cannot go directly into the walls without first touching the ground. The match is typically played in best-of-three or best-of-five sets, with a set won by the first team to reach six games with at least a two-game advantage. If the score reaches 6-6, a tiebreaker is played.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Odisha+FC">Odisha FC</a>&rsquo;s playoff hopes took a hit as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Punjab+FC">Punjab FC</a> at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. Despite a second-half equaliser from Isak Vanlalruatfela, the Juggernauts now find themselves relying on other results to keep their postseason aspirations alive.
The hosts started the game with attacking intent, as Saviour Gama and Rahul KP looked lively early on. However, Punjab&rsquo;s defence held firm, with goalkeeper Ravi Kumar making crucial saves to keep Odisha at bay. Though Odisha dominated possession and looked in control, the match turned just before halftime.
The key moment came in the 44th minute when Rahul KP was shown a red card for clipping Filip Mrzljak&rsquo;s ankle. With Odisha down to 10 men, Punjab capitalised almost immediately. In stoppage time (45+2&rsquo;), Ricky Shabong played a precise through ball to Petros Giakoumakis, who made no mistake in smashing the ball into the top corner to give the visitors the lead.

The winger&rsquo;s left-footed effort found the back of the net, with Ravi Kumar unable to handle the shot cleanly, bringing Odisha level.
<h2>Race for playoffs still alive</h2>
Punjab FC continued to push forward in search of a winner, with head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis making three changes in the 64th minute to inject fresh energy. Luka Majcen, Asmir Suljic, and Asish Pradhan entered the fray, with Majcen proving particularly dangerous with his aggressive runs. Punjab came close in the 88th minute when Filip Mrzljak&rsquo;s strike hit the post, and Majcen&rsquo;s follow-up effort was deflected wide by Rahim Ali.
In stoppage time, Odisha nearly stole all three points when Isak set up Hugo Boumous in the box. However, Ravi Kumar redeemed himself with a sharp save, ensuring Punjab left with a hard-earned point.
With this result, Odisha FC remain in seventh place with 26 points, trailing sixth-placed NorthEast United FC (29 points). Punjab FC, meanwhile, sit ninth with 24 points. Football, Sports: Real Madrid and Manchester City, two perennial Champions League contenders, find themselves in an unusual round-of-16 playoff scenario

The UEFA Champions League knockout stage has once again brought two of Europe’s most dominant teams, Real Madrid and Manchester City, face-to-face. The highly anticipated clash presents a unique challenge under the new Champions League format, which has already stirred debates among fans and analysts alike. The 2024-25 Champions League season has introduced a revamped structure, increasing the number of teams from 32 to 36 and altering the qualification dynamics. This change has forced clubs to be more consistent throughout the campaign, rewarding sustained performance rather than short bursts of brilliance. While the format aims to level the playing field, it has also increased the number of matches, which some argue leads to player fatigue and injuries. On the other hand, Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, despite dealing with an unprecedented 28 injuries this season, has maintained its competitive edge, thanks to the depth and versatility of its squad. Who holds the edge? Robin Singh, Indian footballer, believes Madrid has the upper hand. “City is still struggling to find consistency in their backline. FA Cup: Maguire strikes late as Manchester United beat Leicester City 2-1

Liverpool overturned a first leg deficit to reach the League Cup final with a 4-0 win over Tottenham on Thursday, ramping up the pressure on Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.
Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk were on target for the Reds, who will face Newcastle at Wembley on March 16 for the first silverware of the English season.

Liverpool remain on course for a quadruple in a dream debut season for Arne Slot.
They enjoy a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, have cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League and visit Championship strugglers Plymouth in the FA cup fourth round on Sunday.
"To reach a final should always be special," said Slot. "It was a very good performance from our side."
Spurs' trophy drought on the other hand goes on. Tottenham last lifted silverware in 2008 and Postecoglou now has one less opportunity to fulfil his promise of winning a trophy in his second season.
There is speculation the Australian could be shown the door if another goes awry away to Aston Villa in the FA Cup at the weekend with Spurs languishing 14th in the Premier League.
"We have given up a good opportunity tonight and we cannot shy away from that," said Postecoglou. "They were by far better team. They were too good for us."
Despite having more glamorous titles to win, Slot showed his desire to make the League Cup his first trophy as Liverpool boss by naming his strongest available team bar the usual rotation in goal for cup competitions as Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson Becker.
New signing Kevin Danso was forced straight in to Tottenham's injury-ravaged defence, while Mathys Tel also made an early debut off the bench after Richarlison hobbled off injured.
Liverpool had scored four in each of the previous two meetings between the sides at Anfield and repeated that feat to make light of their 1-0 first leg defeat in north London last month.
<h2>Liverpool onslaught</h2>
The home side had taken the first quarter to find their stride but the pressure built after Szoboszlai ran offside before sweeping home Salah's pass.
From the Egyptian's next delivery into the box, Spurs did not escape as Gakpo drilled in first time to move clear as the top scorer in this season's competition with five goals.
Antonin Kinsky kept Salah waiting for his goal with a fine save moments later, but at the other end of the field Richarlison lay prone to leave Postecoglou's team further depleted.
Already without record signing Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert in attacking areas, Tottenham never looked capable of mounting the threat they needed to survive the Liverpool onslaught.
The decisive blow came five minutes into the second half when Kinsky rushed off his line but was beaten to the ball by Darwin Nunez and caught the Uruguayan.
Salah ruthlessly dispatched the resulting penalty into the top corner for his 26th goal of the season.
Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch fired off the post as Liverpool put their foot down to kill the tie off.
The killer third goal came 15 minutes from time when Connor Bradley, who excelled in the absence of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, played in Szoboszlai to slot home.
Van Dijk then exposed Spurs' struggles defending set-pieces by heading in the fourth from a corner to rub salt in the visitors' wounds.
Newcastle are eying an end to their own 56-year wait for a major trophy after an impressive 4-0 humbling of Arsenal on aggregate in the other semi-final.
But the Magpies have the unenviable task of stopping Slot's juggernaut if they are to do so.

Liverpool thrash sorry Tottenham Spurs to reach League Cup Final

Young Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Garcia headed home a 93rd minute winner to put his side into the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a 3-2 victory at Leganes on Wednesday.
Juan Cruz's brace for the hosts pulled back early strikes by Luka Modric and Endrick for the European champions at Leganes' Butarque stadium.
With extra-time beckoning 20-year-old forward Gonzalo headed home at the near post after fine work by Brahim Diaz to help Madrid snatch a derby victory and keep their legs fresh ahead of big upcoming games against Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.

Madrid were without Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham after minor knocks, and started with youngsters Jacobo Ramon and Raul Asencio at the heart of their back-line because of their defensive injury crisis.
"Gonzalo has been in a very good run with the reserves and he brought a lot," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters.
"We have to be pleased with what the young players did... they are well prepared, they lack experience obviously, but they are doing very well."
Madrid started the quarter-final well and were soon ahead, with Modric slotting home in the 18th minute after good work by in-form winger Rodrygo.
Teenage striker Endrick doubled Los Blancos' lead with a poacher's finish after the ball broke loose to him in the box.
It seemed to be plain sailing for Ancelotti's side until Jacobo conceded a penalty for handling Cruz's shot.
The Leganes playmaker dispatched the spot kick low to Andriy Lunin's left, with the Ukrainian goalkeeper inches away from reaching it.
Ancelotti sent on Vinicius Junior for Rodrygo for the second half, and the winger missed two good chances straight away.
Leganes goalkeeper Juan Soriano saved well to deny the Brazilian, who also headed over from close range.
Madrid paid the price for their profligacy when Cruz netted his second, with the aid of a deflection off Ferland Mendy.
With stoppage time almost over, Diaz produced a fine dribble to break free on the right, before crossing to the near post to create his side's late winner.
Gonzalo was on hand to head home with one of the final touches of the game and book Madrid's ticket to the semi-final.
League leaders Madrid face Atletico, second, on Saturday in a derby clash before visiting Man City in the Champions League on Tuesday.
"(Gonzalo's) goal came just in time, in the last minute," said Ancelotti.
"Obviously it takes you a bit longer to recover from playing extra-time.
"The team is in good shape, we left some players out for them to rest a bit, to be ready for Saturday and well prepared."
Atletico thrashed Getafe 5-0 on Tuesday to progress to the final four, while record 31-time winners Barcelona visit Valencia and Real Sociedad host Osasuna in the other quarter-finals on Thursday.

Copa del Rey: Real Madrid steal late victory against Leganes to enter semis

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/barcelona">Barcelona</a> coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/hansi-flick">Hansi Flick</a> said Wednesday his team would not hide behind "excuses" after rivals <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/real-madrid">Real Madrid</a> attacked Spanish refereeing following a surprise La Liga defeat.
Los Blancos were beaten 1-0 at relegation-battling Espanyol on Saturday and subsequently sent a furious letter to the Spanish football federation blasting the country's refereeing as "rigged" and "completely discredited".
Madrid were angry after Espanyol defender Carlos Romero avoided a red card for hacking down striker Kylian Mbappe and went on to score the winning goal.
"This (letter) is their choice, they do it like this, it's not our way -- I said no excuses and we will do it like that," Flick told a news conference ahead of Barcelona's Copa del Rey quarter-final at Valencia on Thursday.

<h2>Real Madrid at top of La Liga table</h2>
Real Madrid remain top of La Liga by one point ahead of city rivals Atletico Madrid, whom they host on Saturday in the top flight.
Carlo Ancelotti's side are in action on Wednesday at Leganes in the Copa del Rey, while Atletico thrashed Getafe 5-0 on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals.
Record 31-time Spanish cup winners Barcelona thrashed Valencia 7-1 in La Liga in January but Flick said it would be harder going at Mestalla.
"The atmosphere (previously there) was unbelievable, and they press well, and it was not easy to win there, and I think it will be the same tomorrow," added Flick.
"It's a cup match and you cannot win a trophy tomorrow but you can lose one, and this we don't want to do."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/chelsea">Chelsea</a> striker <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/sam-kerr">Sam Kerr</a> claimed she was ignored by police officers after telling them a taxi driver left the Australian fearing for her life, a court heard on Tuesday.
Kerr is on trial, charged with causing racially aggravated harassment to police officer Stephen Lovell during an incident in south-west London in the early hours of January 30, 2023.
Lovell first saw Kerr that evening as she crawled through a smashed taxi window outside Twickenham Police Station, Kingston Crown Court was told.
The taxi driver had driven Kerr and her partner, West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis, to the police station to complain that they had refused to pay clean-up costs after one of them was sick, and that one had smashed the vehicle's rear window.
Kerr said the driver had been "acting in a crazy way" by driving very fast, repeatedly stopping and speeding up again, locking them in the car, and refusing to let them go for about 15 minutes.
A "heated" discussion about the incident ensued between Kerr and the police, during which the 31-year-old allegedly became "abusive and insulting" towards Lovell, calling him "stupid and white".
During questioning by prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones, Lovell told the jury that Kerr's words had made him feel "belittled and upset".
Kerr, who joined Women's Super League champions Chelsea in 2020, accepts making the comments, but denies that they amount to the charge.
In a police interview the following day, Kerr told the officer in charge that "I shouldn't have been so front-footed".
But she added, "in that moment I was feeling very threatened because of one: How I was being treated, and two: For my life in that car".
"I was in a taxi and I did vomit outside the window, and in that moment onwards the taxi driver became very aggressive and driving very dangerous, and had us both very scared.
"I actually pressed the emergency thing on my phone and spoke to someone and he (the driver) would not return us, drop us off - we wanted to pay whatever it was. He said we weren't going to pay but that is not true at all."
"He literally was so dangerous and so scary and he had us both very afraid."
Kerr said it was "very confronting" to only speak to three male officers despite just being with "a very dangerous man", adding that she "definitely" would have preferred to speak with a woman in that situation.
During her police interview, Kerr claimed she could not recall which officer was Lovell, but said: "We spoke to three officers and honestly I didn't feel very helped."
"We were both very scared, very upset and we didn't feel like we, I guess, were believed, on arrival, and were kind of being - not forced - but told just behave."

Carlo Ancelotti said Kylian Mbappe would miss Real Madrid's upcoming Copa del Rey quarter-final against Leganes with a bruised calf and backed his club's complaints about Spanish refereeing on Tuesday.
French striker Mbappe was hacked down by Espanyol's Carlos Romero during their 1-0 La Liga defeat on Saturday with the defender avoiding a red card and going on to score the winning goal against the league leaders.
On Monday, Madrid sent a letter to the Spanish football federation blasting refereeing in Spain as "rigged" and "completely discredited".

"Mbappe started to train today, yesterday we gave him an extra day of recovery," Ancelotti told reporters.
"He has a bruised calf, he trained normally but tomorrow he will not be available for the game."
Ancelotti said the decision not to send off Romero was "inexplicable" after the game and reiterated his point ahead of the Leganes clash.
"We're talking about something that's inexplicable, we're talking above all about the welfare of the players, and what Madrid's message asks for is an explanation, and that seems right to me," said Ancelotti.
"We want an explanation about what happened and why nothing was done to look after the welfare of the player."
Ancelotti also said Jude Bellingham was set to miss the Leganes game with a knock, along with David Alaba, who was ruled out with a thigh injury earlier Tuesday.
The Austrian defender will miss between two and three weeks, according to Ancelotti.
Alaba, only recently back from a year-long knee injury absence, will be unavailable for the derby clash in La Liga against Atletico Madrid on Saturday and is unlikely to feature in the Champions League play-off tie against Manchester City.
Los Blancos travel to face the Premier League side in Manchester on February 11 and then host the second leg on February 19.
Antonio Rudiger is a major doubt for the game with another thigh injury, leaving youngster Raul Asencio and midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as Madrid's likely centre-back pairing.
Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal are long-term injury absentees for Madrid in defence.
"Unfortunately in the last two days we've lost two important players, that's something we did not contemplate... Alaba was ready to play tomorrow, as he had good feelings," said Ancelotti.
"It's a moment of emergency which we have to bear out, because these are small problems, Alaba will be out for 15-20 days, Rudiger the same, so we have to deal with it with (the players) we have."

Rubiales, 47, has called the kiss an innocuous "peck between friends celebrating" and denied any coercion.
"This shouldn't happen in any social or work setting... A kiss on the lips is only given when I decide so," Hermoso said on the opening day of the trial at the National Court in San Fernando de Henares near Madrid.
"As a woman I felt disrespected. It was a moment that stained one of the happiest days of my life," added Hermoso, the all-time top scorer for the national women's team.
"At no point did I seek that act, let alone expect it," she said during more than two hours of testimony.
"I don't have to be crying in a room or have thrown myself to the ground when the act happened to imply I didn't like it."
Rubiales is scheduled to take the stand on February 12 in the highly anticipated trial running until February 19.
Among the accused alongside Rubiales are ex-women's national team coach Jorge Vilda and two former federation officials, Ruben Rivera and Albert Luque.
They also stand accused of trying to coerce Hermoso with prosecutors seeking 18 months' jail against them.
<h2>Life 'on stand by'</h2>
Hermoso said Luque asked her to help resolve "the biggest mess" of Rubiales' life and that federation officials wanted her to release a video or a statement hushing up the incident on "countless" occasions.
Testifying after Hermoso, the federation's press chief Patricia Perez Requena told the court that the director of communications Pablo Garcia Cuervo said they had to stop the "media noise" as they left Australia.
A press statement was written to downplay the kiss in her name, Requena said, adding that a tired Hermoso read the text and said "do what you want".
Hermoso later said she did not seek the kiss and asked why she had to "keep doing this sort of things" after the statement was drafted, said Requena.
Hermoso, who now plays in Mexico, said she faced death threats and insufferable media pressure after returning to Spain and left Madrid with her family due to the fear she felt.&nbsp;
"Until today it feels like my life has been on stand by" due to the case, she added.
The scandal has rocked Spanish football and made Hermoso an icon of the fight against macho culture and sexism in sport.&nbsp;
Rubiales, who was already under investigation for alleged corruption in his role as federation head, stepped down in September 2023, two days after the start of a probe over the kiss. He had been federation chief since 2018.
In a recent Netflix documentary titled "Se acabo" ("It's over"), which looks back at the players' anger after the scandal overshadowed their historic success, Hermoso revealed she cried following the kiss.
She told the court on Monday that "no one came to ask me how I was" after the incident and felt "completely abandoned by the federation".
Men's national team manager Luis de la Fuente is among the witnesses due to speak on Tuesday.

Jenni Hermoso on Monday told the trial of Spain's former football chief Luis Rubiales that his forced kiss on her in 2023 "shouldn't happen in any social or work setting". Rubiales provoked worldwide outrage when he cupped Hermoso's head and gave her an unsolicited kiss after she helped Spain beat England in the 2023 Women's World Cup final in Australia. In the battle between the top two for the past two seasons, the Gunners prevailed to move within six points of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
"It is a great day for us, especially with the necessity that we had to win the game," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal were gifted the perfect start inside two minutes as Manuel Akanji lost possession and Kai Havertz squared for Martin Odegaard to open the scoring.
Erling Haaland headed in his 250th career club goal early in the second half to bring City level.&nbsp; But the defending champions are a pale shadow of their former selves this season and conceded within 105 seconds of the restart when Thomas Partey's shot deflected in off John Stones.
"It's happened all season, we are giving away too many things," said City manager Pep Guardiola.
"You cannot lose the control, it's 95 minutes. You cannot finish in the way we played."
Myles Lewis-Skelly would have been suspended if his controversial red card in a 1-0 win at Wolves last weekend had not been overturned.&nbsp; The 18-year-old made the most of that reprieve by curling in Arsenal's third for his first goal for the club.
Havertz fired low and hard into the far corner with City cut open at will by the Arsenal counter-attack on 76 minutes.&nbsp; And another Arsenal teenager rounded off the rout when Ethan Nwaneri curled home in stoppage time.
Defeat leaves City still in fourth but now 15 points off the top and realistically dethroned after four consecutive seasons as champions.
<h2>Meek Manchester United</h2>
Jean Philippe-Mateta was Palace's hero with both goals in the second half as United suffered a fifth defeat in their last six home league games.
Victory takes the Eagles above the Red Devils in the table as Oliver Glasner's side climb to 12th.
Three consecutive wins for United had lifted the mood around Old Trafford but it was back to square one for Ruben Amorim after another home display lacking in creativity and riddled with defensive lapses.
Kobbie Mainoo, who started as a makeshift centre-forward, hit the post with United's best effort of a bright opening before their attacking threat fizzled out.
Mateta opened the scoring on 64 minutes after Maxence Lacroix's header came back off the bar.&nbsp;Worse was to follow for United as Lisandro Martinez had to be stretchered off with what appeared a serious knee injury.
"I think it's a serious situation," said Amorim. "Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player but the character he has, especially in this hard moment."
Palace showed no mercy to secure the three points when Daniel Munoz charged through the middle of the home side's defence and unselfishly squared for Mateta to knock in his sixth goal in five games.
<h2>Spurs ease relegation fears</h2>
Tottenham eased the pressure on under-fire manager Ange Postecoglou and fears they could be dragged into a relegation battle with a 2-0 win at Brentford.
The Bees were left to rue a number of missed chances against an injury-ravaged Tottenham defence.&nbsp;Brentford also lent the visitors a helping hand with the opening goal as Vitaly Janelt headed Son Heung-min's corner into his own net on 29 minutes.
Yoane Wissa's header came off the bar as Brentford pushed for an equaliser.&nbsp; But Spurs picked them off on the counter-attack when Pape Sarr prodded through Valdimarsson's legs from Son's pass.
Victory lifts Tottenham to 14th and 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Premier League: 5-star Arsenal thrash Manchester City at Emirates

Unsettled Manchester United forward <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/marcus-rashford">Marcus Rashford</a> is close to joining <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/aston-villa">Aston Villa</a> on loan, according to reports on Saturday.
Villa have moved for Rashford after selling Colombia striker Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr on Friday.
The 27-year-old had been linked with AC Milan and Barcelona, while his representatives are also believed to have held talks with Tottenham and West Ham during the January transfer window.
A temporary switch to Villa would allow Rashford to rehabilitate his tarnished reputation after his astonishing fall from grace in the last two years.
Villa could benefit from a revitalised Rashford with a point to prove as they look to challenge for a top four finish in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league">Premier League</a>, while also competing in the Champions League last 16.
Villa boss Unai Emery is sure to be asked about the interest in Rashford when his side face Wolves in Saturday's late Premier League fixture.&nbsp;
Rashford has been looking to leave Old Trafford since admitting he was ready for a "new challenge" after being dropped by United boss Ruben Amorim for the Manchester derby in December.
The England star has missed all 12 of United's game since then, with Amorim appearing to lose patience with Rashford recently when he said he would rather name the club's 63-year-old goalkeeping coach in the squad.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ruben-amorim">Amorim</a> said this week that Rashford would have to change his ways completely to end his exile.
But it now seems Rashford will get his wish to quit United before Monday's transfer deadline.
Meanwhile, United have signed England Under-19 international Ayden Heaven from Arsenal in a deal worth over &pound;1 million in compensation to the Gunners.
The 18-year-old centre-back has signed a contract until 2029, with the option of a further year.&nbsp; He was in the last six months of his scholarship terms at Arsenal and rejected the chance to sign a professional contract with the north Londoners.
Heaven made his Arsenal debut in the League Cup against Preston earlier this season and United said he will be "immediately" linking up with Amorim's squad.
"I am incredibly proud to join Manchester United," Heaven said.&nbsp;"I'm grateful to everyone who helped make this dream a reality.
"There is so much that I want to achieve in the game. I'll be giving everything to continue my development and become the best player that I can be."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/real-madrid">Real Madrid</a> stumbled to a shock 1-0 defeat at struggling Espanyol on Sunday which left them leading La Liga by a single point.
Carlos Romero's 85th minute strike snatched victory for the relegation-battling hosts, provisionally 17th.&nbsp;Atletico Madrid pulled within a point of Los Blancos with a 2-0 win against Mallorca earlier, ahead of next weekend's crunch derby clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid were left furious after Romero was only booked for a cynical foul on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kylian-mbappe">Kylian Mbappe</a> before going on to net the winner.&nbsp; However, Carlo Ancelotti's side played far within themselves and did not do enough to take anything from what seemed on paper an inviting fixture.
"Espanyol played a very good game in my opinion, they defended very well, they did what they had to do. Could we have done more? Yes," Ancelotti told reporters.
The Italian coach was angry about the decision not to send off Romero.

"To us it's inexplicable that they didn't send him off."&nbsp;Romero admitted he felt bad about scything down the French superstar.
"I knew Kylian is impossible to stop when he's running, I stopped him how I could, it was a bit ugly," Romero told DAZN.

Jofre Carreras had a low shot saved by Thibaut Courtois at the other end on a rare Espanyol attack.

Los Blancos were furious when Romero was only booked for a cynical slide tackle from behind to hack down Mbappe as he broke over the halfway line.&nbsp;Rodrygo jinked away from Romero before firing into the side netting and had another effort saved, while Garcia tipped away a vicious Mbappe strike as Madrid turned the screw.&nbsp; The visitors were shocked by a swift Espanyol counter-attack which led to the breakthrough, with Omar El Hilali crossing for Romero to volley home at the back post.
Los Blancos did not create much danger in seven minutes of added time and Espanyol's fans celebrated with abandon when Mbappe lashed over a late effort to end the game.
"This win is so important for us, we had to suffer... we knew we had to do it in front of our fans," added Romero.
Atletico Madrid secured a comfortable win over Mallorca to put the pressure on, ahead of Real's match.
Samuel Lino slid home in the 26th minute after a strong driving run by Giuliano Simeone, son of Atletico's coach Diego Simeone.&nbsp;Antoine Griezmann, who started the game on the bench, produced a superb lobbed finish to net the second in stoppage time and delight the Metropolitano stadium.
Atletico coach Simeone was able to celebrate his 500th La Liga match with the three points.

Manchester City to face Real Madrid in pick of Champions League play-off ties

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/manchester-united">Manchester United</a> and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tottenham">Tottenham</a> are among the sides aiming to ensure direct passage to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/europa-league">Europa League</a> last 16 in Thursday's league phase finale with nine places in the knockout stages up for grabs.
The struggling English giants are labouring in the bottom half of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league">Premier League</a> table but do sit in the top eight of the Europa League.
Only the top eight progress automatically into the last 16, while ninth to 24th have to endure the rigours of a two-legged play-off round next month.
United boss Ruben Amorim is desperate to have two free midweeks for extra time on the training field to try and imbed his ideas after a turbulent first two months in charge.
The Red Devils have played 17 games in 64 days since Amorim took charge for the first time.
United have found Europe's second-tier competition much easier to negotiate than domestic duties with four consecutive wins meaning they just need a point away to FCSB.
The Romanian champions, though, can also secure a top-eight finish should they pull off a famous victory.
"We have to surpass ourselves, but we have done this before many times, so we will do it again," said FCSB striker Florin Tanase.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is clinging to his job by a thread after a disastrous run of six Premier League defeats in seven games plunged Tottenham into a relegation battle.
A mounting injury list has been a major factor in their troubles and victory over Elfsborg in north London could buy Postecoglou time to get some of his star names back for the last 16 in March.
<h2>Roma, Porto in danger</h2>
Table-toppers Lazio are the only side to have guaranteed a place in the last 16.&nbsp;Anderlecht, Athletic Bilbao, Eintracht Frankfurt, Galatasaray, Lyon, United, Tottenham, FCSB, AZ Alkmaar, Bodo/Glimt, Olympiacos, Rangers, Union Saint-Gilloise and Viktoria Plzen are all assured of at least a place in the play-off round.
However, there are big names at risk of crashing out before the knockout stages.
Two-time European champions Porto sit outside the top 24 ahead of their clash with Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv, which will be held in Belgrade due to the conflict in the Middle East.
Italian giants Roma are also at risk as they are 21st in the table and face a tough task against second-placed Frankfurt.
After a promising start to the competition, three consecutive defeats have plunged Ajax into peril ahead of the four-time European champions' clash with Galatasaray in Amsterdam.

Manchester United, Spurs seek Europa League last 16 and much-needed rest

Jamshedpur FC edged past <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Punjab+FC">Punjab FC</a> by 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-super-league">Indian Super League</a> (ISL) 2024-25 season on Tuesday (Jan 28). The Men of Steel are now placed third in the standings, with 31 points from 17 games courtesy of 10 wins and a draw, trailing the second-placed FC Goa (33) by just two points.&nbsp; &nbsp; <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Jamshedpur+FC">Jamshedpur FC</a> broke the deadlock through Pratik Chaudhuri&rsquo;s header in the 41st minute, and later Javi Hernandez doubled the lead early in the second half. Punjab FC tried their level best to salvage something from the game, but Ezequiel Vidal&rsquo;s goal remained only as a consolation. With this defeat, Punjab FC are now winless in seven consecutive games this season (2D, L5). &nbsp; The hosts started the game proactively as they pegged back Jamshedpur FC&rsquo;s backline with a flurry of attacks. Meanwhile, the visitors were looking for opportunities to break on the counterattacks. Courtesy of Punjab FC&rsquo;s sustained pressure, the first chance of the game fell to Luka Majcen in the eighth minute. The move was started by Asmir Suljic before he released Muhammad Suhail on the right flank. The youngster found Majcen with a telling cross, but his eventual attempt was saved by Albino Gomes.

However, things complicated for the hosts when Muheet&rsquo;s clearance cannoned off Javi Hernandez and landed straight into the back of the net in the 48th minute. It started with a back pass from Nikhil Prabhu towards Ivan Novoselec before the experienced defender played a loose ball back to Muheet. With Javi pressing, the goalkeeper was in a hurry to clear his lines, and in the process the ball struck him and found its way into the net. &nbsp; Punjab FC finally pulled one back in the 58th minute when Vidal rifled one from distance and left the entire Jamshedpur FC backline, including Albino in goal, surprised. The Argentine swerved the ball past Pratik before nestling it into the bottom right corner. This was the 10th goal that Jamshedpur FC conceded from outside the penalty area in the ongoing season. &nbsp; In the 60th minute, Dilmperis decided to freshen up the attack as he brought on Petros Giakoumakis and Leon Augustine, replacing Majcen and Suhail. Later, both teams made a few more changes to their lineup for that extra bit of energy for the business end of the game. While Punjab FC kept pushing forward in search of the equaliser, Khalid Jamil made sure he had the right players on the field to stop them from doing so. &nbsp; In the 80th minute, Khalid decided to bolster defensively as he turned to Stephen Eze to close out the game, replacing Tachikawa in midfield. The winger aimed for the far post, but his effort lacked any power as it was cleared by Pratik. &nbsp; Punjab FC players and their coach tried several combinations, but in the end they were the second best against a well-oiled Jamshedpur FC unit as they secured their 10th victory of the campaign.

Disgraced former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Premier League</a> referee <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/david-coote" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">David Coote</a> says he hid his sexuality over fears of the abuse he would receive for being gay, apologising for the actions that led to his sacking.
Coote, 42, was suspended in November after footage emerged of him making derogatory remarks about former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in a video that was widely shared on social media.

Further photographs shared by the Sun newspaper in November, which the newspaper said were taken during Euro 2024, appeared to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled-up bank note.
He was dismissed by referees body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) last month.
In an interview with the Sun published on Tuesday, Coote revealed he is gay.
"I have received deeply unpleasant abuse during my career as a ref and to add my sexuality to that would have been really difficult," he said.
He added: "I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well -- a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that's led me to a whole course of behaviours."
Coote said he and his late mother had received death threats following decisions he had made on the pitch and cited his own example to show how relentless abuse from the stands and on social media could impact the mental health of officials.
<h2>Escape route</h2>
Coote told the Sun he had used cocaine as an "escape route".
"I've had long periods where I've not used it -&mdash; but it was one of the escape routes I had," he said.
"Just getting away from the stresses, the relentlessness of the job. It fills me with a huge sense of shame to say that I took that route."
In a separate statement released late on Monday, Coote said he had been through one of the most difficult periods of his life.
"I take full responsibility for my actions, which fell way below what was expected of me," he said.
"I am truly sorry for any offence caused by my actions and for the negative spotlight it put on the game that I love. I hope people will understand that they were private moments taken during very low times in my life. They do not reflect who I am today or what I think."
Coote's contract was terminated by the PGMOL in December following its investigation into the initial video, in which he used offensive language about Klopp.
His behaviour is under investigation by the Football Association and European governing body UEFA.
Former Aston Villa and Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger came out in 2014 after his career ended but there has not been an active out gay footballer playing in the Premier League.
Former international rugby referee Nigel Owens, who came out as gay in 2007, said he understands why Coote hid his sexuality.
"People wonder why we are still talking about this, why people are still needing to live the lie," he told the BBC. "You just need to look at some of the comments on there (social media) which are totally unbelievable."

Premier League: Ex-referee David Coote says ‘hid my sexuality over abuse fears’

Former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/machester-united">Manchester United</a> midfielder <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/paul-scholes">Paul Scholes</a> says out-of-favour <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/marcus-rashford">Marcus Rashford</a> has let his teammates down and should be "banished" from the dressing room.
The England forward has not played for United since December 12, with manager Ruben Amorim leaving him out of the squad for every game since apart from one, in which he was an unused substitute.
Amorim suggested on Sunday that he would rather have 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital in his squad than the 27-year-old forward, citing a perceived lack of effort.
Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles with United, expressed strong views about Rashford on The Overlap Fan Debate.
"I think Marcus has let a lot of people down really, with his attitude, and I think that's what the manager is trying to say," he said.
"You think of the young players coming through the team, think of (Alejandro) Garnacho, they're looking up to people like Marcus now -- he's 27 years of age, and he's clearly not training properly."
"I remember years ago when I told the manager (Alex Ferguson) I didn't want to play in that Arsenal game... he said to me 'The worst thing you did is let your team-mates down', and that really stuck with me because I wasn't really thinking about that -- and now I think Marcus Rashford, he's doing exactly the same."
"OK, he's not refusing to play, but in the way he's behaving and the way he's training, in a way he is saying I don't want to be involved with these."
"So I think the fact of letting your team-mates down in that dressing room -- he should be banished from the dressing room really. If he's in and around that and young people are seeing that as an example, the sooner he's gone the better."
Scholes' comments follow similarly strong remarks from former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast that there was "no way back" for Rashford following Amorim's comments.
Rashford said in December he was ready for a "new challenge", two days after being left out of the squad to face Manchester City.
Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan have been linked with a move for the player, who has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United, during the January transfer window.
But any move is complicated by Rashford's reported &pound;300,000-a-week ($374,000) salary on a deal that runs until 2028.

Rashford should be 'banished' from Man Utd dressing room, says former midfielder Paul Scholes

Leicester pushed Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou closer to the sack with a 2-1 win that extended the north London side's dismal run and lifted the Foxes out of the Premier League relegation zone on Sunday.
Postecoglou's troubled team blew the lead on home turf as they crumbled to a sixth defeat in their last seven league games.

With only one win in their last 11 top-flight matches, Tottenham are languishing in 15th place, just eight points above the bottom three.
It was another woeful result for the beleaguered Postecoglou, who has faced mounting calls for his dismissal throughout a turbulent second season in charge.
Tottenham are dangerously close to being sucked into the relegation battle and trips to Brentford and Aston Villa in their next two league games -- either side of a League Cup semi-final second leg clash with Liverpool -- could decide the Australian's fate.
"It is a disappointing result, but at the same time I can't ask anymore from this group of players. Some of them aren't 100 percent but they are trying their hardest," Postecoglou said.
"Things just aren't falling for us. It is not an atmosphere where it is easy at the moment. We've got to get through this as united as possible."
Tottenham hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg against Liverpool and a Wembley appearance could buy Postecoglou time to get his team back on track.
With 14 players absent for Thursday's Europa League win at Hoffenheim, Tottenham's injury crisis has led to criticism of Postecoglou's tactics and the level of intensity in training.
The former Celtic boss accepts the blame for the rash of injuries, but his claims that Tottenham remain on the right path under his leadership look more questionable with each woeful result that edges him closer to the axe.
While Postecoglou fights to save his job, Leicester manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy can breathe a little easier over his own future.
Van Nistelrooy, who replaced Steve Cooper in December, had presided over seven successive league defeats before their much-needed success against Tottenham.
Leicester are now one place and one point above the relegation zone and Van Nistelrooy said: "It's a massive win. The players are buying into it. I can only be very proud of this team."
On a filthy, rain-lashed afternoon, a protest banner against Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was unveiled by fans before kick-off with the slogan "24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy - time for change".
<h2>'Levy out' chants</h2>
In the 33rd minute, Pedro Porro whipped a pin-point cross into the Leicester area and Richarlison rose to head home from close-range for just his third goal this season.
But Leicester equalised less than 60 seconds after half-time when Bobby De Cordova-Reid's cross was mishandled by Antonin Kinsky, ricocheting off Jamie Vardy's shin as it trickled into the net.
Just four minutes later, Morocco forward Bilal El Khannouss took possession in the Tottenham half and advanced unchecked by Postecoglou's sloppy defence before curling a fine finish past Kinsky.
With chants of "we want Levy out" growing more audible by the second, Postecoglou's furious expression told the story of Tottenham's plight.
Postecoglou's decision to take off Richarlison was jeered by Tottenham fans, whose patience is wearing thin.
Brentford benefitted from penalty controversy to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.&nbsp;
Thomas Frank's team earned a 66th minute penalty when Marc Guehi made a hash of clearing and the panicked Maxence Lacroix fouled Nathan Collins.
Bryan Mbeumo's spot-kick hit the post, but Palace's reprieve was short-lived as VAR ruled Guehi had encroached before the shot.
The Brentford forward gratefully accepted his second chance by sending Palace keeper Dean Henderson the wrong way for his 14th goal this season.
Kevin Schade netted in the 80th minute for Brentford and Palace winger Romain Esse came off the bench to score with his first touch on his debut five minutes later.
Later on Sunday, troubled Manchester United travel to Fulham, while Aston Villa host West Ham.

"It is a disappointing result, but at the same time I can't ask anymore from this group of players. Some of them aren't 100 percent but they are trying their hardest," Postecoglou said. "Things just aren't falling for us. It is not an atmosphere where it is easy at the moment. We've got to get through this as united as possible." Tottenham hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg against Liverpool and a Wembley appearance could buy Postecoglou time to get his team back on track. I can only be very proud of this team." On a filthy, rain-lashed afternoon, a protest banner against Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was unveiled by fans before kick-off with the slogan "24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy - time for change". 'Levy out' chants In the 33rd minute, Pedro Porro whipped a pin-point cross into the Leicester area and Richarlison rose to head home from close-range for just his third goal this season. Brentford benefitted from penalty controversy to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park. Sports, Football: Palmer demonstrated a composure beyond his 22 years as Chelsea ended a five-match winless run with a 3-1 victory over Wolves on Monday

Enzo Maresca believes England rising star Cole Palmer can do for Chelsea what Egypt forward Mohamed Salah has done for Premier League leaders Liverpool.
