India head coach Gautam Gambhir has all but confirmed the inclusion of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul for the opening Test match against Bangladesh starting on Thursday (Sep 19). The contest which will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will see the return of Pant in the red-ball format for the first time since December 2022 having got injured in a near-fatal car accident. The duo's inclusion means both Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan will have to sit out despite shining in India’s last Test series against England in March.

<h2>Gambhir all but confirms Pant, Rahul's inclusion</h2>

"We don't drop anyone. We just pick the players who fit the XI. Jurel is a phenomenal player, but when Pant is coming in, sometimes people have to wait. Same with Sarfaraz. There will be opportunities, but you have to wait," Gambhir said in the pre-match press conference.

It was already rumoured that Rahul was going to get the nod ahead of Sarfaraz in the Playing XI while Pant and Jurel were involved in a tug-of-war for the keeper’s role. However, Pant is now set to start his first Test match for India in 21 months having been out of action in the entire 2023. Interestingly, his last Test before the near-fatal accident in December 2022 was also against Bangladesh.

India are also expected to field three spinners while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will be the pace options. &nbsp;&nbsp;

New Zealand play Sri Lanka in the first of two Tests at Galle from Wednesday as the visitors look to shake off the frustration of their abandoned match with Afghanistan.

On a spin-friendly pitch, they face an emboldened Sri Lanka, who last week ended a 10-year wait for a Test win in England.

New Zealand's one-off Test against Afghanistan at Greater Noida, near New Delhi, was meanwhile washed out without a ball being bowled.

But skipper Tim Southee said "exciting times" lie ahead with a hectic schedule of eight Tests in 12 weeks&nbsp;on three continents, starting with Sri Lanka.

World Test Championship points are on the line and the Black Caps are third behind India and Australia in the table. Sri Lanka are fifth.

"We haven't played a Test match since March, but exciting times are ahead of us as we play eight games between now and December," Southee told reporters in Galle.

New Zealand will then play a three-Test series away in India beginning in October, before another three-Test series against England back home.

"We are looking forward to making an impact and move forward," Southee added. "We know how important points in these games are."

The tourists will bank heavily on ex-captain Kane Williamson, who has an outstanding record against Sri Lanka, with Southee calling the 34-year-old "vital".

Kane, New Zealand's highest run-scorer in Test cricket and the world's number-two ranked batter, averages 78 against Sri Lanka, way above his career average of 54.

"He has had a lot of success against Sri Lanka," Southee said. "He's a great performer to have in the side against any opposition.

"His experience will be vital for us in this series."

<h2>- 'Tough' -</h2>

The first Test, in the imposing grounds beneath the walls of the 17th century Galle Fort, will have a rest day on Saturday when Sri Lanka votes at a presidential election.

The final match will also be played at Galle, from September 26.

Galle traditionally helps spin bowling and the New Zealanders have expert advice, having recruited Sri Lanka's skilled former&nbsp;go-to bowler Rangana Herath as spin coach for the tour.

Left-armers Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner are their key spin bowlers.

Off-break all-rounder Glenn Phillips, as well as Michael Bracewell and left-arm spinner Rachin Ravindra, give them options.

Sri Lanka have a strong line-up too, switching bowlers from their winning team against England, where the visitors clinched the third Test by eight wickets at The Oval.

England took the series 2-1 after victories at Old Trafford (by five wickets) and Lord's (by 190 runs).

Sri Lanka have left out pace bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Milan Ratnayake, bringing in left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya and off-spinner Ramesh Mendis. &nbsp;

"We know that it is tough on the seamers, who did so well in England, but given the conditions in Galle, we have to leave out two of them," coach Sanath Jayasuriya told reporters.

The hosts have also juggled around their batting line-up, promoting Kamindu Mendis, player of the series in England, to number five from number seven.

This is also the first time the prize money awarded to women cricketers will be equal to their men counterparts in the same event.

India, winner of 2024 men's T20 World Cup, took home $2.45 million in prize money. The difference of $0.10 million is because of the number of matches for the teams in two events as well as the total number of teams which was 20 in men's edition and is 10 in women's event.

The runners-up in Women's T20 World Cup 2024 will take home $1.17 million compared to $500,000 awarded to men's losing finalist South Africa.

The other two semi-finalists will be getting $675,000 in comparison to $210,000 awarded in the last edition. Apart from all this, all 10 participating teams will be getting $112,500 as well.

"The prize money extends beyond the knockout stages, as each group stage win will now be rewarded with $31,154, reflecting a 78% increase from last year’s $17,500," read the ICC statement.

The marquee event kicks off on October 3 with Bangladesh taking on Scotland. The ICC also announced a swap in schedule for October 5 - Australia vs Sri Lanka match will now be played in afternoon instead of evening and England vs Bangladesh will be played in evening instead of afternoon.

India skipper Rohit Sharma has brushed aside Bangladesh's 'extra confidence' talk ahead of the upcoming Test series against them which starts on September 19.

Rohit made the comments at the pre-match conference in Chennai on Tuesday (Sep 17) and said that they will be focusing on self-game. Bangladesh are coming to India after beating Pakistan 2-0 in the away Test series.

"Every team wants to beat India, they like to beat India, let them have fun. We will focus on how to beat them. We need to win the match and that's what we are here for. We can't think about what they have to think and say about us," said Rohit at the press conference in Chennai.

"When England came here, they said a lot of things too. But we didn't focus much on it. We needed to deliver&nbsp;results and that'll be our&nbsp;aim here as well. To play good cricket. As for Rohit, he is in the form of his life when it comes to Test cricket and would be hoping for the same to continue in the upcoming series.

Rohit, whose Test career has seen a bit of overhaul in the last couple of years, could surpass Virender Sehwag in the upcoming series for the most Test sixes by an Indian batter.&nbsp;

The Hitman currently has 84 sixes in Test cricket, six less than Sehwag's 90 but in about half the matches. While Sehwag took 103 matches to hit 90 sixes, Rohit has played only 59 Tests so far. He will have all the chances to hit seven more sixes in the upcoming two Tests as he opens the batting.

India have a bumper Test season coming up with the Rohit Sharma-led side set to host New Zealand after the two Tests against Bangladesh.&nbsp;

India then travel to Australia for the highly-anticipated five-Test Border-Gavaskar series in November, where they aim to win a Test series for the third consecutive time.

"They are the best bowlers in the country. Their records speak for themselves. This quartet, including Nathon Lyon, is the best possible bowling attack that Australia can put out in the park. I will be backing them in and I am sure they can do the job," Gillespie said on Fox Sports.

"India, they are red-hot, they have been playing some wonderful Test cricket for a while now. Even though they have beaten Australia in recent times. I think Australia have a chance to beat India this time around," he added.

India have a bumper Test season coming up with the Rohit Sharma-led side set to host New Zealand after the two Tests against Bangladesh.&nbsp;

India then travel to Australia for the highly-anticipated five-Test Border-Gavaskar series in November, where they aim to win a Test series for the third consecutive time.

India last lost to Australia in a Test series in 2014, which was played in Australia. Since then, India have won all four series played between the two countries, two in India and two in Australia.

The Aussie team, however, have to finalize their opener following the retirement of David Warner earlier this year. They have tried star batter Steve Smith in the opening position but the role could go to Travis Head.

Head has been in superb form this year, playing pivotal role in Australia's win over India in WTC and ODI World Cup 2023 final.

'They have beaten...,' Pakistan coach backs Australia to beat India in upcoming Border-Gavaskar series

India are set to tour Australia later this year, for a five-match Test series; i.e. the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During the 2018/19 tour, Virat Kohli-led India created history, becoming the first-ever Asian team to win a Test series on Australian soil. During the second Test, of the four-match series, in Perth, there was a heated argument between Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. While it was a disagreement over the two teammates on the field, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra recently revealed that the Australian broadcasters purposely made a big deal out of the argument to create a controversy versus India.&nbsp;

Talking in a podcast on 2 Sloggers YouTube channel, Chopra said, "This is one thing I learnt when I travelled to Australia in 2018 for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a commentary stint with Channel 7. Generally, we were taught to stay neutral in commentary. India won the first Test there and lost the second, and then I understood that when India plays in Australia, they don't play against the Australian team only but against a whole country, which includes their whole press."

<h2>'When Ponting tore into the Indian team, I was stunned...'</h2>

He further mentioned, "They used to release videos - they did it in front of me when Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja had a heated exchange with each other while standing in the 30-yard circle. The broadcasters amped up the stump mic as they were abusing each other. They cut the clip and shared it with the press in front of me. After that, when we were talking off the field, I was like, what are we actually trying to achieve because it's nothing? Then Ricky (Ponting) was there with us, and he said that 'making a mountain out of a molehill'. The moment he went into the air, he tore into the Indian team, and I was stunned that he had just said something else a few minutes back."

Chopra added, "Channel 7 was very kind at that time; they called me in the commentary box. I didn't have the stint at that time, but they called me to present India's case. I said there is no team where players have no disagreements; it's a game played by adults." He concluded, "The next day when we lost the Perth Test, I was driving somewhere and picked a newspaper, and the front page news was about Ishant and Jadeja with the headline, "There is in-fighting in the Indian cricket team," it was front-page news. Then, I understood that leave the neutral commentary when you are playing against Australia in Australia and then understand that the flag of India is more important."

Talking about India's 2018/19 series versus hosts Australia, Kohli &amp; Co. won 2-1 and replicated the same during their 2020/21 tour Down Under. In the 2020/21 series, regular captain Kohli returned home due to paternity leave following the series opener loss. However, a young and depleted India stunned the Aussies by winning the series 2-1, under Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy.

The upcoming India-Australia Test series gets underway on Nov 22 in Perth. It will be a five-match series including a day-night Test in Adelaide.

Ishant vs Jadeja: SHOCKING! Aakash Chopra reveals how Australian broadcasters created controversy vs India

Shreyas Iyer is currently leading the India D team in the Duleep Trophy 2024 edition. The ongoing domestic tournament was a chance for the right-hander to score big and regain his Test spot. With India just announcing the squad for the first Test versus Bangladesh, which commences on Sep 19 (Thursday), he had a chance to impress and make a comeback for the second and final Test. However, Iyer has managed scores of 9, 54, 0 and 41 in four innings. In addition, the Iyer-led side have lost both their games. Thus, his chances of making a Test comeback look bleak at the moment. In this regard, a BCCI official claimed that Iyer has 'no place' in the Test line-up post his Duleep Trophy debacle and stated that he might also not be part of the Test squad for the Australia tour, later this year.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Iyer said, "At the moment, there’s no room for Shreyas to be in the Test team. Who will he replace? Besides, his shot selection has been a concern in Duleep Trophy,&nbsp;especially yesterday (Sunday). He was well set and then suddenly played such a shot (off left-arm spinner Shams Mulani). When you are set and then batting on a flat deck, you need to make the best use of that opportunity."

Further, another BCCI official admitted that Iyer has chances to strengthen his case in the near future, however, a comeback ahead of the Australia tour looks out of the cards owing to his issues with short deliveries. The official stated, "Shreyas could be there (in the Mumbai squad) for the Irani Cup (beginning on Oct 1 in Lucknow). Even if he’s picked for the Bangladesh T20Is (from Oct&nbsp;6), he still might play Irani and then be available from the second T20I onwards. Now, if he doesn’t fire in Irani too, he still has the Ranji Trophy to get runs. It wasn’t too many days ago when he was batting so well in last year’s ODI World Cup. He suffered an injury too, which needs to be considered."

The official added, "Also, with still one round left in Duleep (Trophy), you never know he might score a hundred. He needs to regain form. Most likely he won’t go to Australia for his problems against the short ball, but one can’t just ignore his runs at home."

Iyer last represented India in Tests during the five-match series versus England at home. He featured in the first two games before injury and poor form ruled him out. He has 811 runs in 14 matches at an average of 36.86.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma-led India are gearing up for the two-match Test series opener versus Bangladesh, starting on Sep 19 in Chennai.

No room for Shreyas Iyer in Tests: BCCI official seals star batter's fate, says 'won't go to Australia'

Indian captain Rohit Sharma backed KL Rahul ahead of the first Test versus Bangladesh, starting on September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Rahul is making a return to the Test team after an injury he suffered during the England home series&nbsp;early this year. The right-hander was in good form in 2021 but runs dried up for him from 2022 onwards. While he scored a hundred in the South Africa series, in Johannesburg, and scored a sublime 80 in the first Test versus England, in Hyderabad, he got injured (quadriceps injury) after that to be ruled out. Rohit has backed Rahul prior to the Bangladesh series opener.

Rohit said in a pre-match presser when asked about Rahul's topsy-turvy ride in Tests, "There are a handful of people in world cricket who had a smooth ride. Handful of cricketers had no issues all their life, it was all good. Everyone has an up-and-down career. The best thing to do is to understand yourself, understand expectations from yourself and what do you need to bring to table for the team. The kind of quality KL Rahul has, everybody knows about him. The message to him from our side was we want him to play all the game and bring the best out of him. It’s our duty as well to bring the best out of him."

Hitman further opined, "It’s important to give him a clear message that what he expect&nbsp;from you. He has done well since comeback – scored a hundred against South Africa. He scored an 80 in the first Test against England in Hyderabad and unfortunately got injured and didn’t play afterwards."

Rohit added, "I hope he continues from where he left in Hyderabad. He’s got the game to play spin, seamers so I don’t see any reason why he can’t flourish in Test cricket. Opportunities are there. Important for him to understand how he wants to take his career forward."

Rahul has 2,863 runs in 50 Tests at an average of&nbsp;34.08, including 8 hundreds and 14 half-centuries. He will be eager to get going in whites from the series opener itself, with a hectic Test season ahead for India.&nbsp;

India spinner Ravi Ashwin has revealed that he has not yet thought about retirement, but he's taking it one day at a time. The comments come ahead of the start of first Test against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19 at his home ground in Chennai.

Pakistan-born pacer Zahoor Khan, who was forced to move to the UAE to pursue his&nbsp;dream of playing top-level cricket, had a chance to be a part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) camp as a net bowler in 2014. In 2020, when the Indian Premier League (IPL) shifted to the UAE, Zahoor's impressive performance in the MI nets impressed the big names of the franchise, such as then-captain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, etc.

In a recent interaction, Zahoor recalled his MI days and revealed that Bumrah was mighty impressed with his slower deliveries. In addition, the Team India speedster&nbsp;asked him for tips on gripping the ball.

In a chat with Sports Tak, Zahoor said, "I was with Mumbai Indians for three months. I've spent a reasonable amount of time with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah. He now has been included in England's 15-man squad for the upcoming five-ODI series against Australia at home but will be used strategically.

"Jofra will have to be managed throughout the series," England's designated ODI skipper Jos Buttler told Sky Sports on Sunday (Sep 15).&nbsp;

"He's played a really good stint now of T20 cricket, but obviously you can only bowl four overs in there. There's a jump in intensity getting loads up to taking full part in an ODI - and of course, as an England fan, to push those loads up hopefully to get back into the Test arena as well," Buttler added.

Archer has been eased back into&nbsp;international cricket very meticulously with his first international games after a long injury layoff being two T20Is against Pakistan in May earlier this year.

He then played all the games for his side in the T20 World Cup 2024 but has been put on workload management since then and hasn't fully participated for Surrey in the Vitality Blast. He also played selectively in The Hundred before playing the first T20I against Australia earlier this month.

England's interim coach Marcus Trescothick also echoed the same thoughts as Buttler and said: "He knows the plan. It's discussed long in advance of picking the team on each day. We know what we're doing with him, and where we're going. He's comfortable: he knows what he's doing."

England will hope for Archer to stay fit for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy early next year and the away Ashes in November 2025.

India skipper Rohit Sharma is in the form of his life when it comes to Test cricket and would be hoping for the same to continue in the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. Rohit also has two records in his reach when the series starts on September 19 with the first Test in Chennai.

Rohit, whose Test career has seen a bit of overhaul in the last couple of years, could surpass Virender Sehwag in the upcoming series for the most Test sixes by an Indian batter.&nbsp;

The India batter is also two centuries short of hitting 50 international tons - a feat only achieved by Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Virat Kohli (80) for India.

Rohit has hit 31 ODI tons, five T20I tons and 12 Test tons in his career so far and can very much reach the 50 international tons in the upcoming series.

Rohit has scored 700 runs in 16 innings of nine Tests played in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2023/25 cycle and will be aiming for the same batting performance.

India have a bumper Test season coming up with Rohit Sharma-led side set to host New Zealand after the two Tests against Bangladesh.&nbsp;

India batter Virat Kohli will have a chance to join an elite list in the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. The first Test starts September 19 and Kohli is 152 runs short of becoming only fourth Indian batter to score 9000 or more Test runs.

If Virat, who has 8,848 runs in 113 Test so far, score those 152 runs then he'll join Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar with 9000&nbsp;or more Test runs for India.

Tendulkar, at 15,921, has the most Test runs for India with Dravid behind him at 13,265 runs and Gavaskar at third place with 10,122 Test runs.

Virat will also have the chance to score his 30th Test ton and join the above three as only Indian players to score 30 or more Test hundreds. As of now, Virat has 29 Test tons and 30 Test fifties.

Virat's form this year is a cause of concerns with the batter scoring just 296 runs 15 innings of 14 matches across formats at an average of 19.73.

The star batter, however, has scored 369 runs at an average 61.50 in four Tests he has played so far in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2023/25.

Virat Kohli on brink of creating history and joining ELITE list in Bangladesh Tests

During India's tour of Pakistan in 2004, the visitors played three Tests with the series opener in Multan. While the match is remembered for Virender Sehwag becoming the first-ever Indian triple centurion, who led India to an innings and 52-run win, stand-in captain Rahul Dravid also made heads turn with his shocking declaration call when India were 675 for 5, on the second day, after opting to bat first. His decision left Sachin Tendulkar stranded at 194*, which stunned many. Recently, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra -- who was part of the Indian Test team during the 2004 trip to Pakistan -- recalled Master Blaster Tendulkar's reaction post the shocking declaration.&nbsp;

Speaking on YouTube channel 2 Sloggers, Chopra said, "I was in the dressing room, but I wasn't part of that conversation. To be very honest, I didn't even try to get into it because I was too young. Yes, paaji wasn't happy that day. I think I saw him unhappy for the first time. I never saw him lose temper, and he didn't exactly lose temper that day but he was visibly unhappy. Something wasn't right."

Chopra further opined, "Rahul did call, but Dada (Ganguly) was part of the dressing room that day too. He wasn't playing in that game, but he was in dressing room and I'm sure he was part of the think-tank. It wasn't the captain's decision alone. After the game, Rahul did say that he wouldn't have declared had he known the match would end within 4 days."

He added, "With Rahul, it is possible that in heat of the moment, you agree or disagree. But you don't doubt his decision. You know that even if he was at a similar position, he would've taken the same decision."

India were without regular captain for the three-match Test series opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan. However, they stormed past Pakistan after posting a mammoth first-innings total. In reply, Pakistan 407 and were dismissed for 216, after following-on, to lose the clash convincingly.

Eventually, India also won the series 2-1, post their 3-2 ODI series win early in the tour.

In his column for Mid-day, Gavaskar wrote, "By beating Pakistan in both the Test matches played in Pakistan, the Bangladesh team have shown that they are a force to reckon with. Even a couple of years back, when India toured Bangladesh, they were given a good fight by the Bangladeshis. Bangladesh tour of India 2024: Full schedule, streaming, squads and everything you need to know

Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim opened up on Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) decision to reappoint Babar Azam as the white-ball captain ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, held in West Indies and the USA. Babar had stepped down as Pakistan's all-format captain soon after the Asian giant's miserable run in the 2023 ODI World Cup&nbsp;in India.

Shaheen Afridi was then named the T20I captain, whereas Shan Masood took over in Tests. After just one series as captain, Shaheen was removed -- following a 4-1 series loss to hosts New Zealand -- and&nbsp;Babar was reappointed as the white-ball skipper&nbsp;by PCB, a decision that surprised many. Under Babar, Pakistan fell apart in the T20 World Cup, losing to USA and India and failing to make it to the Super 8.

Imad has now opened up on Babar's reappointment and admitted that the call 'surprised' him as well.&nbsp;“Yes, I was surprised. What can I say, it’s ultimately the selector’s call. Whatever they thought was the best option, they picked and they picked the team [accordingly],” said all-rounder Imad Wasim on Babar’s re-appointment as captain to a local sports platform. “Everybody in Pakistan was surprised, not just me. So, I can’t say no that I was not surprised,” he stated.

On Pakistan's shambolic performance, Imad, who came back from international retirement to play the mega event, said,&nbsp;"Yeah, our performance wasn’t up to the mark, to be honest, and we have to accept that, including myself. So yeah, but it is what it is. I think we had a good side, but didn’t click."

During a presser in the T20 WC, Imad had pointed out, "The problem is our team is so good, our players are so good, that we are good enough to play any kind of cricket. We haven’t tried that but the thing is you have to try that, you have to get rid of the fear of failure. In everything – batting, bowling, fielding, you have to get rid of fear of failure."

Pakistan were placed in Pool A along with eventual winners India, co-hosts USA, Ireland and Canada. They lost to the USA&nbsp;in a thrilling Super Over contest and failed to chase down 120 versus arch-rivals India before beating the other two teams. However, it was too late by then as they bowed out of the 20-nation event.&nbsp;

Also read: Bangladesh tour of India 2024: Full schedule, streaming, squads and everything you need to know On Pakistan's shambolic performance, Imad, who came back from international retirement to play the mega event, said, "Yeah, our performance wasn’t up to the mark, to be honest, and we have to accept that, including myself. So yeah, but it is what it is. I think we had a good side, but didn’t click." During a presser in the T20 WC, Imad had pointed out, "The problem is our team is so good, our players are so good, that we are good enough to play any kind of cricket. We haven’t tried that but the thing is you have to try that, you have to get rid of the fear of failure. In everything – batting, bowling, fielding, you have to get rid of fear of failure." Pakistan were placed in Pool A along with eventual winners India, co-hosts USA, Ireland and Canada. They lost to the USA in a thrilling Super Over contest and failed to chase down 120 versus arch-rivals India before beating the other two teams. However, it was too late by then as they bowed out of the 20-nation event.

What can I say: Wasim admits being 'surprised' by Babar Azam’s reappointment as Pakistan captain for T20 WC

Australia opener Travis Head says India is not his favourite opponent to play against. It is to be noted that Head hit centuries in both WTC Final 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023 to help Australia win both the ICC titles against India.

The Aussie opener, however, acknowledged that India is 'difficult' to play against but was happy to contribute in winning.

“I don't feel like they're my favourite. I just feel like we play them enough, play them lots. And, I guess the last couple of years I've been in nice form. So yeah, being able to, to play well, it's always nice,” Head said in a chat with Star Sport.

"I guess it's not hard to get up for the contest. It's hugely competitive. Yeah, it's easier to get up for the game. So I wouldn't say they're my favourite. They're extremely difficult but it's been nice to play well in a couple of games and looking forward to preparing well and being ready to go and let's look, hope hopefully I can, I can contribute to what's a successful summer for us," he added.

India and Australia will next face each other in five-Test Border-Gavaskar series from November later this year in Australia. While India would be hoping to win their third consecutive Test series Down Under, Australia will be looking to beat India for the first time since 2014 in a Test series.

India last lost to Australia in a Test series in 2014, which was played in Australia. Since then, India have won all four series played between the two countries, two in India and two in Australia.

With David Warner retired from all forms of&nbsp;international cricket, Head could see himself in the opening position even though Australia preferred Steve Smith for the role ahead of Head in the series played against Pakistan and West Indies earlier this year.

India batter KL Rahul has dropped major hints on joining his old Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The conversation happened with a fan ahead of the mega IPL auction scheduled to take place in December.

“Let’s hope so,” replied Rahul in answer to a fan's question, which was: “I am a die-hard RCB fan. I am following RCB since very long, and you playing past in RCB, and now definitely the rumours; I won’t say anything. But yeah, I am just wishing and praying that you come into RCB and rock here.”

Rahul had previously played for RCB twice, in 2013 and 2016, before missing the 2017 season with an injury and playing for the Punjab Kings from 2018 to 2021.

Rahul was bought by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022 mega auction, where he has captained the side till 2024 season. The wicketkeeper-batter, however, has been criticised for his strike rate for quite some time now.

Last season, a video went viral where LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen having an animated discussions with Rahul, which suggested not all is well in Lucknow.

While the two parties involved have denied over and over that there's nothing wrong between them, the media reports doing rounds for quite some time now say differently.

A report recently claimed that Rahul is not expected to remain captain of the side but is likely to be retained ahead of the auction.

Punjab Kings could chase Rohit Sharma

Former Mumbai Indians captain and star batter Rohit Sharma could play for another franchise if MI decides against retaining him ahead of IPL 2025. With all teams involved eagerly awaiting BCCI’s decision on changes concerning auction rules, including the reintroduction of the Right to Match (RTM) card and clarity on number of retentions, one specific team – Punjab Kings, has expressed keenness in bagging Rohit’s service, provided they have the balance.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto says that their spinners are at par with India, but the whole team has to play as one to make a difference. The comments come ahead of the first Test against India in Chennai, which starts on September 19. Bangladesh, however, feel confident of themselves, thanks to their 2-0 Test series win against Pakistan last month.

"We are in a good place with our bowling attack, both spin and pace," Shanto said at the pre-departure press conference in Dhaka on Sunday (Sep 15).&nbsp;

"Perhaps our pacers are behind them in terms of experience but our spin attack is close to theirs. They can bowl in any conditions. All I can say is that our pacers, spinners and batters will give 100%.

"I think we can make a difference only if we play as a team. It is not just the spinners but the pacers and the batters also. The whole team has to play together," he added.

The skipper also acknowledged that it'll be a challenging series, but they have extra confidence and will be looking to take the game into the last session as it can go anywhere from that point.

"It will be a challenging series but we have the extra confidence from the Pakistan series," Shanto said.

"We want to play well for five days, that's our goal. We want to get the result in the last session of the Test match. At that time, the match can go in any direction. It is an opportunity [to get our first win in India]. We will play with a win in mind," he added.

The second Test of the series is scheduled to be played in Kanpur from September 27. India will be aiming to win the series 2-0 to boost their first-place standing on the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023/25 cycle table.

India's ace pacer Mohammed Shami says he doesn't want to rush his comeback and risk getting injured again. Shami has been out ever since his magical performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, in which India lost to Australia in the final.

"I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I have been out of action for quite some time," Shami said at the Cricket Association of Bengal's (CAB) annual awards ceremony as reported by the news agency PTI.&nbsp;

"However, I want to ensure there is no discomfort when I return. I've to work on my fitness, so that there is no discomfort," he added.

India have a bumper Test season coming up which will see them play 10 Tests till January 2025 and Shami is an important part of those plans. The pacer, however, hasn't been included in the first Test against Bangladesh which starts September 19.

After two Tests against the Asian opponents, India host New Zealand for a three-Test series before travelling to Australia for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar series.

"The stronger I return, the better it is for me. I don't want to rush and risk getting injured again, be it against Bangladesh, New Zealand or the Australia series. I've already started bowling, but I won't take any chances until I am 100% fit," Shami said.

The pacer, who is much anticipated to make his comeback in the New Zealand home series, is also okay to test his fitness in domestic set-up if required.

"If I need to play domestic cricket to test my fitness, I will. What matters most is that I am fully ready for whatever comes next, regardless of the opposition or format," the pacer added.

India's most important tour, however, is going to be the Australia Test series where they'll be aiming to win the third consecutive Test series.

The one-off Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand was washed out on Friday after five days of rain, just the eighth Test in history to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. Afghanistan's adopted home ground at Greater Noida, on New Delhi's outskirts, has been hit by persistent rain, forcing officials to call the match off without even staging the toss. However, there were also question marks about the venue, which was hosting its first-ever Test and has only basic drainage and facilities.

Despite some sunshine on day one and two, the outfield remained soaked. Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has blasted Shoaib Malik's appointment as the mentor of Stallions in the Champions One-Day Cup, a team being led&nbsp;by Mohammad Haris. Basit lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for Malik's appointment, accusing him of deliberately losing a match in a domestic tournament. The ex-cricketer was referring to the infamous 2005 National T20 Cup encounter, where Malik was leading the Sialkot Stallions and made the controversial decision to lose to&nbsp;Karachi Zebras, in Lahore.&nbsp;

"Those people who cannot think about the country, should not be appointed. Those who have admitted that they deliberately lost a match, should not be the mentor. If you want evidence I will give it. Ramiz Raja Saheb interviewed Shoaib Malik. What did he say?," Ali said on his official YouTube channel.

In the Sialkot vs Karachi match, in April 2005, Malik-led side were chasing 176 and needed only 25 off the last four overs. However, they fell short by four runs, managing 171/3 and, thus, raising eyebrows. This happened despite Malik remaining unbeaten.&nbsp;

As a result, Malik drew criticism from all corners for his action and was fined significantly. In addition, the result of the match was considered null and void.

Those who deliberately lose..: Former Pakistan cricketer BLASTS Shoaib Malik, accuses him of match-fixing

Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has slammed former England captain Michael Vaughan after he compared Joe Root to Sachin Tendulkar. While the comparison remains fair, the nature of the comment made the former World Cup winner furious as Vaughan reckoned that cricket would be in good hands if Root broke Tendulkar’s record for most Test runs. According to Gavaskar, while the comparison is fair, it should have nothing to do with who holds the record, whether it is an Englishman or Indian.

<h2>Gavaskar slams Vaughan</h2>

"Recently, I heard someone saying it would be good for Test cricket if Joe Root overtook Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs and centuries in Test match cricket," Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his Sports Star column.

"Please tell us what’s wrong with Test cricket presently when Tendulkar is owning the record and how will Test cricket be better if (and that’s a huge if) an Englishman goes on to hold it. In what way will it be better? Kindly enlighten us.”

In the recently concluded Test match series against Sri Lanka, Root broke Alastair Cook’s record for most Test hundreds scored by an Englishman with 34.
