Senior Olympic official John Coates has reiterated that Tokyo must stage a simplified Summer Games next year with the health and safety of athletes the most important consideration in the planning.

“But we must reduce the cost impact of postponement as well as simplify the Games to ensure they can be organised efficiently, safely and sustainably, in this new context.

“With one year to go, there is no clear picture of what shape the simplified Games will take. The situation with COVID-19, both domestically and internationally, is constantly changing.”

Coates wrote that putting in place counter-measures against COVID-19 would be no easy task but welcomed the top level commitment from the Japanese government, Tokyo regional government and Games organising committee to get it done.

“The IOC and our Japanese partners ... are doing everything in their power to ensure that not only will the Games go ahead next year, but the athletes remain first and foremost in all our planning,” he added.

“Yes, we want the athletes of the world to have their Olympic moment of competition, just as they would have dreamt. But critically, they must experience that moment in an environment where their health and safety ... is assured.”

However, it upheld a majority of the accusations against him, finding that the "confirmed breaches of official duty and their seriousness still justify the decision... to opt for the most severe type of disciplinary sanction possible".

"I respect the decision of the Federal Administrative Court," said Lauber, adding that he firmly rejected accusations he had lied in the case.

The Football Writers’ Association on Friday announced that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been selected as the Footballer of the Year for 2019-20 season after Reds ended a 30-year wait to lift the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> trophy.

The Liverpool skipper saw off competition from Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and as well as Virgil Van Dijk and Sadio Mane to claim the coveted honour, the older individual award in the world.

Two other Liverpool players, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Allison Becker also received votes with the newly-crowned Premier League champions dominating the voting process.&nbsp;

Henderson said: “I’d like to say how appreciative I am of the support of those who voted for me and the Football Writers’ Association in general. You only have to look at the past winners of it, a number of whom I’ve been blessed to play with here at Liverpool, like Stevie (Gerrard), Luis (Suarez) and Mo (Salah) to know how prestigious it is.

"But as grateful as I am I don’t feel like I can accept this on my own. I don’t feel like anything I’ve achieved this season or in fact during my whole career has been done on my own. I owe a lot to so many different people – but none more so than my current teammates – who have just been incredible and deserve this every bit as much as I do.

The logistics and operations team from the BCCI will also leave for Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to check on the preparations for IPL.

The IPL Governing Council meeting is set to take place in a few days’ time with the officials expected to decide on the SOPs, issues with broadcasters and scheduling details for the money-spinning tournament.&nbsp;

Unheralded Dale Whitnell, a former courier, fired a flawless second round of 64 on Thursday to surge to within a shot of halfway leader Renato Paratore at the British Masters.

The 31-year-old Whitnell, a former Walker Cup team-mate of Tommy Fleetwood, recorded an eagle and five birdies at Close House to climb to 10 under par on the European Tour's return to action.

"I've been working hard on my game and this course suits me because it's a little bit fiddly in places," said Whitnell, who had not earned any money from five events in 2020 before the circuit shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I'm just trying to go about my business like I normally would and if it's good enough, it's good enough."

Whitnell spent 10 months as a courier driver a couple years ago to support himself while competing on lower-level tours, and claimed his European Tour card from qualifying school last season.

He said he was trying not to think about the first prize of £187,000 ($238,000) and a two-year European Tour exemption, a potentially life-changing breakthrough.

"The peaks and troughs of the golf profession are very interesting. You've just got to try to deal with it the best you can. I love the game, I wouldn't be here if I didn't and my amateur career speaks for itself," said Whitnell.

Italy's Paratore backed up his opening 65 with another bogey-free display, carding 66 after defying soggy conditions in Newcastle.&nbsp;

Justin Harding of South Africa shot the round of the tournament so far with a 63 to sit level alongside Whitnell, while overnight leader David Law is among four players one stroke further adrift.

All players, caddies and officials were tested for COVID-19 before travelling to the venue and again when arriving on site, with no reported positives so far as the European Tour resumed this week behind closed doors.

Face masks are required indoors and social distancing measures observed, although the strict protocols prompted Andrew Johnston to withdraw after nine holes of his opening round.

Johnston, who opened up last year about mental health struggles, said: "Being here and being confined to the hotel and course and not being able to bring my family is ultimately not what I want at this moment.

"I'm struggling to get my head around it all. One minute I'm coming out of lockdown, going out for dinner, and then the next I'm back in lockdown in a hotel room."
