One of the longest medical drama's on TV, 'Grey's Anatomy', is back with its 17th season and gives us a glimpse of how the medical fraternity is dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. While we get to see familiar faces like&nbsp;Ellen Pompeo,&nbsp;Chandra Wilson,&nbsp;James Pickens Jr. among many others, there is also the return of&nbsp;a very loved&nbsp;character.

Just like the rest of the world, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is nothing like it was before. Chaos looms around it with both doctors and families of patients feeling nothing but helpless. Being converted into a COVID centre, there are fewer surgeries being performed, and more doctors declaring the time of death of their countless COVID-19 patients. Right from the entry of the hospital to the surgical wings, you will only find doctors, patients who are minors and&nbsp;their guardians. Patients with illnesses other than COVID are being transferred to other hospitals. The waiting room of Grey Sloan Memorial has now been transferred to the parking lot with doctors frequently visiting to give the families an update. This is a cross over episode with 'Station 19',&nbsp;who are bringing cases of extreme burn to the hospital.

Grey's Anatomy displays the courage, goodwill and commitment of the medical community during these testing times. At the starting of the episode, we are shown how&nbsp;Miranda Bailey tries to keep it together as she watches her husband Ben Warren go do his job (firefighter) in the middle of the pandemic and reminds herself that they need to save lives. Even with a heart condition and sprain in the leg, she is always up and about in the hospital trying to manage everything in these difficult times. Even if it means shouting at her friend/senior Richard Webber to learn the new protocols before practising any medicine in the hospital. She is always on her toes, trying to micromanage everything and everyone in the hospital. As the hospital is falling short of masks, the nurses are reusing the old ones by using extra strings, while some doctors are lending them their N95 masks. It's a team effort, even though nothing seems to be looking good right now, they are trying to support and help each other out in whichever way possible.

While the premiere&nbsp;largely focuses on the COVID-19 pandemic, we also get an update on each of the character's&nbsp;parallel storylines. First, let's talk about the elephant in the room. Shonda Rhimes did indeed give the 'Grey's Anatomy' fans an early Christmas gift, one which was least expected by anyone. But isn't that what 'Grey's Anatomy' is known for? Dereck Shepherd aka 'McDreamy' makes a surprise entry into the subconscious mind of Meredith when she collapses in the parking lot. We get to see a new spark or at least starting off one between Jo Wilson and Jackson Avery, although we don't know for sure if it ends up being anything solid. Teddy and&nbsp;Owen Hunt's relationship seems to be broken, at least from Owen's side, while Teddy is still trying to make amends for her brief sexual encounter with Koraisk one day before their marriage. On the other hand, Richard Webber and&nbsp;Catherine Avery are still trying to figure out their complicated marriage after all the drama we saw in the previous season.

Grey's&nbsp;Anatomy doesn't disappoint at all, especially when it tells its viewers that they will be blown away by the premiere of season 17.

To sum it up, it was heartwarming yet realistic at the same time.

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 17 review: It displays courage and goodwill of the medical community during the COVID pandemic

After an extended mid-season break, Grey's Anatomy is finally back. The situation is still very grim at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, with Meredith's health decorating, COVID still wreaking havoc and Amelia and Link missing from the hospital to keep the children safe. If you were hoping for the show to return with any positive news, you're in for some major disappointment. After 16 seasons of the longest-running medical drama, one thing which its viewers have learned is that the makers always have a surprise up their sleeves.&nbsp;

The exit of a cast member is not something new for the show. Staring with Derek, Lexie, Mark, George, Izzie, the list goes on. But, it had been a while since we said goodbye to any of the characters. Well, Grey's Anatomy is back to its basics, with the departure of the beloved Andrew DeLuca. A character who had really started to develop in the last few seasons. After going through a rough patch with mental health issues, Deluca was getting back on his feet. Watching him exit the show at this point will definitely dishearten a lot of viewers.

"I don't regret it," says DeLuca while talking to Meredith at the beach (a magical afterlife place). After being stabbed while trying to bust a trafficking racket, DeLuca lands up in the hospital in a very critical state. Even though Owen and Teddy perform an operation, keeping aside all their differences, they fail to keep him alive. This could be termed as one of the most sudden deaths in the show.

While DeLuca wasn't able to bid farewell to his sister Carina or any other doctor in the hospital, he manages to get closure with Meredith, who herself is battling life after being diagnosed COVID positive. While having a conversation with each other at the beach, DeLuca tries to build a sandcastle before a rising tide comes and washes it away. This is used as a metaphor in the show, to explain that it was just a matter of seconds before Deluca's heart stops beating.

While the writers were successful in making his exit from the show heart-breaking and emotional, a lot of the times they went on to the parallel plotlines of other characters, which quite frankly seemed unnecessary. Owen and Teddy having arguments or Maggie taking time off with her new boyfriend could have waited for some other episodes, and the focus should have just been on Andrew DeLuca. A character's death who no one had predicted and hurt just as much as Derick's death in Season 11.

With DeLuca's death, a lot is left to be seen in the coming episodes. How will Carina deal with the grief of losing her brother? Owen and Teddy's combined efforts failed to keep Deluca alive, will they be able to get over their failure? While Grey's Anatomy lost one of its most favourite characters, Bailey had been sleeping in her mother's room in the hospital. Having lost her mother just a couple of hours ago, how will she take the news of another doctor passing away? If Meredith ever regains consciousness, how will she react to not being able to save DeLuca's life?

Just in one episode, the makers reminded us that nothing stays constant in Grey's Anatomy. Andrew DeLuca and his never-giving-up attitude will be missed. Whether it was saving Richard's life by his extraordinary diagnosis or saving a girl from human trafficking, he never gave up.

Lifelong friendships, group study sessions, and plenty of sleepovers: Hostel becomes a home away from home and its people become your chosen family. TVF's 'Girls Hostel Season 2' manages to go back to our past and give us a large slice of nostalgia, with an added topping of drama and suspense.

While the first season was successful in establishing the base of the story and its characters, it's actually season 2 where we see the characters develop and the narrative takes a serious turn. The rivalry between the dentistry stream and the medical stream of SVM college continues, and so does the rivalry between Jo (Srishti Srivastava) and Zahira (Parul Gulati). In the list of changes-Ramya (Shreya Mehta) makes an entry and becomes the self-proclaimed college President by bribing the Principal. Her journey from President to a contender was just a matter of days, as Zahira decides to stand against her in the first-ever college elections. From the campaigning to the declaration of results, a lot unfolds inside the walls of the girl's hostel.

Through the course of two&nbsp;and a half hours, split into 5 episodes, the show addresses a number of issues that the girls in the hostel go through. From being cramped up in a small hostel to having water problems and security issues, the show will remind you of your hostel days in one way or another. TVF has again managed to ace the 'relatability factor. Unlike many other shows/movies, they strayed away from fancy sets and have just shown regular college students on a regular college campus.

For instance, there was a moment when the Principal told Jo and Richa (Ahsaas Channa) to dress properly and return to the hostel early every day in order to "stop giving opportunities to the guys". Such a shallow remark goes by unaddressed with the right closure by the girls and is just forgotten. Or what happened to the girl's hostel viewpoint (a small tea shop outside the hostel which was a breeding ground for creeps) after Jo destroyed it. Did they set it up again the next day? Did that put an end to the problem of guys circling around the girl's hostel? These were rushed through to complete the series in 5 episodes.

Where the show works is its characters and their relationships. After having a falling out in the previous season, Jo and Zahira don't see eye to eye on anything happening in the hostel. Their conversations are dominated by arguments and sarcastic comments. Still, in times of trouble, they have each other's back and fight the election together. Richa and Aarav (Gagan Arora) have their sweet little romance, which is stuck in the friendship zone, waiting to be taken up to the next level.

Even though they are all helping Zahira to win the student body elections, each character has its own parallel storyline going on in the background. One character that really developed this season is Mili (Simran Natekar). Once shy and quiet,&nbsp;Mili&nbsp;is now much more vocal and is actually finding herself during this season.

Girls Hostel Season 2 takes the series ahead and talks about pressing matters which need to be discussed. While taking us on a nostalgia trip, the show also explains how issues like security and fair elections are so relevant even at present times. Perhaps more episodes would have helped the show seem more complete. Nonetheless, the storyline, characters make it a perfect weekend watch.

With lockdown being one of the most discussed topics of the year, it's not surprising to see many upcoming content being centered around it. The latest addition being Amazon Prime Video's 'Unpaused', an anthology of 5 short films showing various experiences people had during these unusual times. These films have been directed by filmmakers Raj &amp; DK, Nikkhil Advani, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Avinash Arun and Nitya Mehra.

In a candid conversation with WION&nbsp;Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Lillete Dubey, who star in two of the short films in 'Unpaused' speak about their experience of shooting during the pandemic, online promotions, and much more.

How has it been adjusting to the new normal, with promotions for your film being held online?

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: I am not a native of any of the metropolitans, I have been born and brought up in Haryana and it irked me always that for every little thing, any non-metropolitan person is expected to leave the culture, the family and everything behind and be there. So, it becomes a very huge choice. You either choose this world or that world.

I feel one of the blessings that has come in the form of an alternative because of COVID is that people are getting to be efficient with their energy, with their presence and with their time. I have always seen the promotions of any sort of project on screen, however, to make that possible, people would really dress up, travel and be at a particular place. So, they would invest a disproportionate amount of time and efforts would go into something which is promotions. Today I feel content that I am home, I choose some time and invest my energy.&nbsp;

We can choose what is human contact important for. So, for something like a promotional event I can not imagine how people would move from one studio to another or how they would go from one place to another, to be doing what I am doing sitting home.

Lillete Dubey: For the past 9 months, we have been doing so much stuff online that it is not so strange anymore. If this had happened last year, we would have found it very odd. But one has been doing talks, one has been doing interviews, one has been listening to so much stuff online. So, I think if a technically challenged dinosaur like me has been able to do some of that, I think we have all acclimatized to a new way of communication.

Tell us about more your respective short films and the characters you played?

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: 'Vishaanu' is a peep into the hearts of individuals who to me are almost de-humanized, the migrant laborers. We as artists have enough resources to pamper and take care our own selves but there is a large section that is so deprived of basic necessities that I feel they are robbed of their humanity. This story looks into the human aspect of that huge mass that we saw suffering.

When I played Seema, there was so much that went inside me, which I tried to convey through my eyes. I am really looking forward to the audience watching this.

Lillete Dubey: My character in the film 'Rat-A-Tat' is someone who is very close to my age. She is very cut off from the world, has no time for anything except her own life. Someone with her own system and way of living, which gets even more exaggerated obviously during the lockdown. Then a small incident with a neighbor, a girl who has come from a very small town of Maharastra has a great significance for this character and how she changes during the film.

It’s just a 20-22 minutes film, but the character's journey was lovely for me. From where she started to where she ultimately reached through this little relationship.

How was the shooting experience in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic?

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: There was a point in which we understood, that the state in which our nation is in and the place where our country stands as compared to other nations, our number will come very late to get a medicine. And till then we will not be getting money delivered to our homes. So, we will have to step out.

We can not afford to get paranoid. But we also couldn't think that nothing is happening. Yes, something is happening. We had to understand it and then handle the situation. We had to take care of each other and step out.

Lillete Dubey: Though I am in that bracket where everyone was telling me that 'senior citizens' should not go outside and my family and friends were all freaking out. I said look, I can not live in a bubble for the rest of my life. I will be cautious, I will be safe, I will wear the mask. I feel like in this whole thing, we have to be very careful, be cautious but we can not stop living. We simply can’t do that. In fact, I think I was in great spirits and so happy to hit a set, start shooting and performing and being a part of something creative and fulfilling again.

I haven’t been apprehensive after that, I have done recordings, I have shot more and I really haven’t been scared at all. I think you just have to mentally be careful and that’s all.

What is your next venture?

Lillete Dubey: I am going to be doing a play, Shobha De has written a book called 'Lockdown Liaisons', which are 24 shorts stories on the lockdown, including a migrant story. I am choosing 5 out of those and doing them as monologues.

What makes 'Unpaused' unique?

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: 'Unpaused' is for people to see different experiences that people had, different states of different individuals of different strata. So it will be reassuring, they will find identifiable moments.

Lillete Dubey: I think for me doing the film was very important because it is about a period in our collective human history that will be recorded. People are going to relate to it enormously because every one of us, all around the world will relate to some aspect of it, whether romance went out of their lives, whether they found a new friendship, whether the strangest relationship developed, whatever it may be. But it will touch somewhere.

What is art finally, it is the shared human experience, so that is what the film is about, our shared experience of the lockdown?

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: I am not a native of any of the metropolitans, I have been born and brought up in Haryana and it irked me always that for every little thing, any non-metropolitan person is expected to leave the culture, the family and everything behind and be there. So, it becomes a very huge choice. You either choose this world or that world. I feel one of the blessings that has come in the form of an alternative because of COVID is that people are getting to be efficient with their energy, with their presence and with their time. I have always seen the promotions of any sort of project on screen, however, to make that possible, people would really dress up, travel and be at a particular place. So, they would invest a disproportionate amount of time and efforts would go into something which is promotions. Today I feel content that I am home, I choose some time and invest my energy. We can choose what is human contact important for. So, for something like a promotional event I can not imagine how people would move from one studio to another or how they would go from one place to another, to be doing what I am doing sitting home. Lillete Dubey: For the past 9 months, we have been doing so much stuff online that it is not so strange anymore. If this had happened last year, we would have found it very odd. But one has been doing talks, one has been doing interviews, one has been listening to so much stuff online. So, I think if a technically challenged dinosaur like me has been able to do some of that, I think we have all acclimatized to a new way of communication. Tell us about more your respective short films and the characters you played? Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: 'Vishaanu' is a peep into the hearts of individuals who to me are almost de-humanized, the migrant laborers. We as artists have enough resources to pamper and take care our own selves but there is a large section that is so deprived of basic necessities that I feel they are robbed of their humanity. This story looks into the human aspect of that huge mass that we saw suffering. When I played Seema, there was so much that went inside me, which I tried to convey through my eyes. I am really looking forward to the audience watching this. Lillete Dubey: My character in the film 'Rat-A-Tat' is someone who is very close to my age. She is very cut off from the world, has no time for anything except her own life. Someone with her own system and way of living, which gets even more exaggerated obviously during the lockdown. Then a small incident with a neighbor, a girl who has come from a very small town of Maharastra has a great significance for this character and how she changes during the film. It’s just a 20-22 minutes film, but the character's journey was lovely for me. From where she started to where she ultimately reached through this little relationship. How was the shooting experience in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic? Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: There was a point in which we understood, that the state in which our nation is in and the place where our country stands as compared to other nations, our number will come very late to get a medicine. And till then we will not be getting money delivered to our homes. So, we will have to step out. We can not afford to get paranoid. But we also couldn't think that nothing is happening. Yes, something is happening. We had to understand it and then handle the situation. We had to take care of each other and step out. Lillete Dubey: Though I am in that bracket where everyone was telling me that 'senior citizens' should not go outside and my family and friends were all freaking out. I said look, I can not live in a bubble for the rest of my life. I will be cautious, I will be safe, I will wear the mask. I feel like in this whole thing, we have to be very careful, be cautious but we can not stop living. We simply can’t do that. In fact, I think I was in great spirits and so happy to hit a set, start shooting and performing and being a part of something creative and fulfilling again. I haven’t been apprehensive after that, I have done recordings, I have shot more and I really haven’t been scared at all. I think you just have to mentally be careful and that’s all. What is your next venture? Lillete Dubey: I am going to be doing a play, Shobha De has written a book called 'Lockdown Liaisons', which are 24 shorts stories on the lockdown, including a migrant story. I am choosing 5 out of those and doing them as monologues. What makes 'Unpaused' unique? Geetika Vidya Ohlyan: 'Unpaused' is for people to see different experiences that people had, different states of different individuals of different strata. So it will be reassuring, they will find identifiable moments. Lillete Dubey: I think for me doing the film was very important because it is about a period in our collective human history that will be recorded. People are going to relate to it enormously because every one of us, all around the world will relate to some aspect of it, whether romance went out of their lives, whether they found a new friendship, whether the strangest relationship developed, whatever it may be. But it will touch somewhere. What is art finally, it is the shared human experience, so that is what the film is about, our shared experience of the lockdown? 'Unpaused' will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video from December 18.

Here, a flood of emotions hit you from the very first scene till the last one.

Another addition in Netflix's endless rom-com list is 'Mismatched', starring Prajakta Koli (Dimple) and Rohit Saraf (Rishi) in lead roles. Like many other shows, it tries to pen down the careless, carefree yet ambitious attitude of the millennials that is centered around the plot of a boy-meets-girl love story. For Prajakta Koli, who we have mostly seen in relatable YouTube videos, this is a debut in the world of web shows. While Rohit Saraf is not the new kid on the block anymore, as we saw him just a few days back in Netflix's Ludo.

Meet Dimple Ahuja and Rishi Singh Shekhawat, two teenagers from Ambala and Jaipur who have come to do a 3-month app development course at Aravalli Institute.

Dimple is someone who is very career-oriented and focuses on Java more than her looks. Her sole reason for joining the course was to excel in this field and come out with a path-breaking app idea. While Rishi had slightly different reasons, which were very apparent when he walked towards Dimple on the first day of the institute and called her 'future wife.' Dimple was completely unaware that her mother had not hit the pause button on the 'shaadi talk' at home. But, the only reason she was allowed to go to Jaipur was to meet the 'possible future husband.' While the duo did start on the wrong foot, they gradually get to know each other and somewhere in the middle of the show get romantically involved.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing bad in a simple rom-com. It makes a perfect addition to your binge list, after all, who doesn't like a cute love story with bucket loads of drama. It has been working for many years and it will possibly continue to do so in the future. But, the problem in 'Mismatched' is they try to over-complicate the simple love story. Initially, they try to merge it with a coming-of-age plotline with teenagers trying to find their way in life, but as we reach the last episode it just falls apart.

Honestly, the fact that Dimple's mother was pushing so much for her daughter's wedding at the age of 17 did seem a bit stretched. Also, for Rishi to completely be okay, actually enthusiastic for marriage in his teens did not fit quite well in the 'millennial plotline.' Especially when he had seen nothing but just a picture of Dimple.&nbsp;

Let's also talk about the cliché representation of its characters, who for some reason are always rude and angry with each other. There is a bunch of rich kids who like always are extra mean to the 'not-so-privileged' students of the class. A self-declared leader of the privileged group, who is extra angry and thinks he is unbeatable. An NRI who criticizes the way Indians scream and basically everything about the country.

Surprisingly, Dimple was also unnecessarily mean in some situations, whether it was her defense mechanism or a way to deal with situations, make her unlikeable in some scenes. Even if we ignore all these factors, the thing which really went too far and gave us 'Student of the Year' feels, was when they held a proper stage competition with an anchor and fancy lights for a small bet between Dimple and another student. Here is when the word 'simple love story' just went flying past the window.

What works for the show? The chemistry between Dimple and Rishi is on point and makes us root for the couple. That's why the end of season 1 was so upsetting. The story of the other characters- the subtle romance between Professor Siddharth and an older student Zeenat, Namrata's coming out of the closet story and Anmol's fight with disability. All these&nbsp;parallel storylines were executed very well. We also enjoyed the scenes in which Dimple snaps back at all the sexist remarks made by other students and her mother. Whether it was standing up for the female gamers or her dark skin colour, she came back in a way they least expected. 
 
Talking about the music of the show, the song which really stuck till the end, was Prateek Kuhad's 'Kaha Ho Tum.' Just as his last song, Kasoor, this one also has another level of charm.

If you have no other show to binge-watch this weekend, you can give Netlfix's 'Mismatched' a try. But watch it with little or no expectations because it's a disappointing downward curve.

'Mismatched' review: Just another clichéd student rom-com except everyone is always angry!

The HBO miniseries 'The Undoing' is a psychological thriller that takes you through the lives of the well-to-do Frasers and how it takes a turn when they meet an enigmatic woman named Elena Alves. During their initial meeting, little do they know, that this woman will be bringing in a storm and nothing will ever be the same again. The series is based on the 2014 novel 'You Should Have Known' by Jean Hanff Korelitz.

Meet the Frasers- Grace (Nicole Kidman) and Jonathan (Hugh Grant). While Grace is a therapist, Jonathan is a child's oncologist and the couple lives in a posh&nbsp;Manhattan house with their young son Henry. Nicole Kidman's character is someone who is still trying to make sense of the elite&nbsp;Manhattan social circles and even drops a hint at moving out of the city, which is quickly dismissed by her husband. To keep up with the upscale society appearances, she involves herself in a fundraiser committee in Henry's school. During one such meeting, she is introduced to Elena Alves. A 'scholarship mother', Elena is different and unlike many others is not trying to 'fit in'. She is not afraid to show who she really is- a fact that's evident when during a fundraiser meeting, she starts breastfeeding- without caring about people's judgment.

It is a day after the fundraiser night that the lives of the Frasers&nbsp;turn upside down. Elena Alves is murdered and prime suspects keep on changing as more details were&nbsp;unmasked.

From here the nail-biting murder mystery begins with the makers adding a new twist almost every 15 minutes. The show picks up from the first episode itself and manages to keep you hooked throughout the three episodes. Full points for the build-up over here! 'The Undoing' will remind you a lot of another show of the same genre called 'Big Little Lies'. It seems like these two shows are made with the same spices to create two different dishes. Having seen both of them the viewer is bound to make comparisons.

Even though the two have different plotlines and characters, there are certain elements that connect them together. For starters, they share the same writer and creator David E Kelley, and Nicole Kidman as one of the main protagonists. Both the shows revolve around the lives of the rich, upper-class women, with their elite social lives being disrupted by a murder of a known one. Not to forget even though their lives fall apart, their clothes are always as marvelous as they can be. While 'Big Little Lies' had three main protagonists and Nicole Kidman was one of them, 'The Undoing' is entirely Kidman's stage to shine.&nbsp;

You can also draw a little comparison between the characters of Grace and Celeste (from 'Big Little Lies'). In 'The Undoing' we see a little role reversal in Kidman's character, while she was undertaking counselling in 'Big Little Lies', here she is the one who is providing it to other people. However, the indecisive nature of her character remains the same. Just like season 1 of 'Big Little Lies' she goes back and forth on many decisions involving her husband.

'The Undoing' works on an excellent screenplay and non-linear narrative, with the murder mystery unravelling in the most unpredictable way you can think of. It felt like the show till now has been made for Nicole Kidman, and she has shown us why she is worthy of all the attention. Her character Grace is a really complex one, who is experiencing many different emotions all at once, as she tries to make sense of what's going on around her. Kidman manages to ace all these emotions with her facial expressions. Another addition to the promising cast is Huge Grant, who is known for his roles in 'Notting Hill', 'Bridget Jones's Diary', 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' and manages to be as charming as ever. We start seeing him more from the second episode onwards and he plays his part beautifully to make this psychological thriller more nerve-wracking.

The remaining cast members of the series such as Noah Jupe, Lily Rabe, Edgar Ramirez, Matilda De Angelis and Fala Chen also play their parts well and make this thriller an interesting watch.

'The Undoing' review: The build-up to this Manhattan murder mystery is mind-blowing!

Scene: Commander Emma Green (Hilary Swank) looks towards planet Earth from distant space contemplating how far away she is, from not only her home planet but also human civilization, society, and most importantly her family. This opening sequence is a perfect launching point for the sci-fi series 'Away', which unlike shows/movies in this genre, not only focuses on the "space" aspect but also dwells deeper into the raw human emotions, sacrifices and the mental and physical turmoil of those who take such space journies.

The story is about the first global effort to send humans to Mars on the spacecraft Atlas. It revolves around the five astronauts from different nations, working together to achieve this monumental feat. However, 'Away' is so much more - their struggles, sacrifices, relations with each other as they work together and ofcourse their ties with loved ones back on Earth.

The crew is an eclectic mix. Commander Emma Green (Hilary Swank) from NASA leads the space mission to Mars, leaves behind her husband and daughter back home. Russian cosmonaut Misha Popov is the most experienced among the crew and is the go-to engineer among the group.&nbsp;Dr. Kwesi Weisberg (Ato Essandoh) is a leading botanist from UK who is tasked to grow flora on Mars. But, it's their unity, determination and on the spot, problem-solving skills which keeps them going on with a mission that had only 50 percent chances of being successful. The theme of time travel is not new in Indian cinema. From Fun2shh in 2003 to Baar Baar Dekho in 2016, the audiences have seen a large variety of sci-fi scripts in the last two decades. What differentiates SonyLIV's JL50 from the rest of the lot is a certain degree of maturity in the way the concept of time travel has been dealt with.

Created, written and directed by Shalender Vyas, the plot of JL50 is summed up very well by the trailer itself. A flight, called JL50, crashed somewhere in northern Bengal. There were only two survivors of the crash, pilot Bhiu&nbsp;Ghosh (Ritika Anand) and professor Mitra (Piyush Mishra). This would have been just an ordinary plane crash, however, there is something extremely unusual: this flight took off 35 years ago from Kolkata airport. Both survivors have not aged one bit and look the same as they did 35 years ago. So the real mystery is where was the plane and its passengers for more than 3 decades?

The CBI officer Shantanu (Abhay Deol) thinks this is all a setup, however, his interaction with Professor Das (Pankaj Kapur) invites the possibility of the impossible - time travel.

Abhay Deol fits&nbsp;well in the character of Shantanu, an officer who might not be physically strong but tries his best to keep it together throughout his investigation. While Hollywood always amazes us with time-bending masterpieces like The Terminator and Interstellar, Indian sci-fi has failed to do this sci-fi niche any justice. The over-dramatized scenes and an attempt to dumb down the science proves to be a major let down in Indian cinema. However, this shouldn't stop us from appreciating a genuine effort in making this genre of sci-fi more believable. The theme of time travel as stated before has been handled with much more maturity in JL50 than previously done. Here you won't find a magically appearing space ship or time travel happening on its own without any possible logic behind it. In fact, the web show succeeds to Indianise time travel, linking it to mythology, which brings in an interesting flavor.

The show travels from Calcutta (1984) to Kolkata (2019) and reminds us that the City of Joy always had something special to offer. The background music which also includes a Bengali song adds a nice depth to the scenes.

One scene which really stuck was when Pankaj Kapur tries to compare scientific innovation in America versus that in India and how Indians are only bothered about religion, caste politics and superstition. He feels frustrated when we spot an object in the sky, we fold our hands and begin worshipping it, claiming "we do not ask what, why, how?"

JL50 finishes in a jiffy, as it has just 4 episodes of roughly 25 minutes each and ends up being more like a movie than a show. This becomes its double-edged sword. Due to the short length, no scene or episode seems dragged. You actually don't even notice when the fourth episode has arrived. But, on the other hand, the show ends up rushing through many plot points which quite frankly deserve an entire episode altogether. For instance, the explanation of the mythological link to time travel should have been fleshed out more. This, along with many other instances make the plot seem confusing, especially in the first 2 episodes.

However, the biggest let down in the show is its final episode, as the ending of the show has been cramped into merely 15-20 mins. There were loopholes as well which slipped into the linear narrative. For example. we were given a glimpse into Shantanu's personal life as he received divorce papers in one scene. However, the audience&nbsp;never got closure on that subplot. The editing of the episodes could have definitely been better.

With such a good cast and plot, the show is a mixed bag but an honest attempt at this sci-fi niche.

'JL50' Review: This time travel thriller deserves to be appreciated for its honest effort

Zee5's new movie Yaara&nbsp;has a retro feel to it. From the opening credit scenes to the costumes flaunted by the actors, it's like we are being taken back in time. Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, it takes us through the highs and lows of four friends as they work their way through the world of crime.

After working together in Haasil&nbsp;and Paan Singh Tomar,&nbsp;Tigmanshu Dhulia and the late actor Irrfan Khan were supposed to collaborate in Yaara.&nbsp;The film begins by remembering the late actor who passed&nbsp;away&nbsp;battling cancer on April 29, 2020.

Yaara, a remake of the 2011 French drama 'Les Lyonnais', can be summed up as a story of friendship, loyalty and betrayal.

Phagun (Vidyut Jammwal), Mitwa(Amit Sadh), Bahadur (Kenny Basumatary) and Rizwan(Vijay Varma) are the four pillars of the chaukadi gang. Sticking together right from childhood, the four indulge in criminal activities including smuggling, bootlegging and trading of illegal arms. We also see a cameo by Sanjay Mishra who plays the role of Chaman and is the primary reason why the gang came together in the first place. The cast includes Shruti Haasan as well, who plays the role of Sukanya- the love interest and later, wife of Phagun. Contrary to her outspoken leftist past in the movie, she barely has any say with how things unfold after her marriage.

The narrative of the film is non-linear and keeps going back and forth in time. Yaara begins in the year 1997 with the chaukadi gang being split-up and the arrest of one of its members. We are then taken back to the early 1950s where the viewer is told the story of how the gang was formed and managed to stick together through thick and think. The transition of the four friends from childhood to adulthood was done smartly through a song in the film. &nbsp;

Yaara's plot jumps between the early 1950s to the late 1990s. Through the tale of their friendship, the writers display many chapters in India's history. The 1970's socio-political environment is displayed with the portraits of Jayaprakash Narayan on the walls of Patna where the gang robs a bank. There was also a mention of a massacre by upper-caste men in a village in Jehanabad where 61 people were killed. Reminding us that the time was dominated by a corrupt government and caste politics.

We also go back to the evolution of fashion with a glimpse of the 70s and 80s through actors flaunting bell-bottom pants and printed shirts. The film is full of old Bollywood references, such as Bahadur's mimicry of Amitabh Bachchan's evergreen dialogues and the posters of Sholay and Amar Akbar Anthony.

Yaara tries really hard to impress the audience but still fails. A major reason could be abrupt writing. Each decade in the movie shows a different part of the gang's life but they all seem to have abrupt endings. Even though the movie has a decent run time of 133 minutes, it starts testing your patience after the first half an hour itself. It feels as if the plot is not going anywhere and the viewer just keeps on waiting for the movie to pick up and get back on track. Sadly that never happens. With a disappointing screenplay and substandard editing, Yaara is not among Tigmanshu Dhulia's best work for sure.

The music of the film was not great and no song was exceptionally brilliant. There were unnecessarily far too many songs in Yaara. Some were even without any context and felt like they were put just for the heck of it. Even though it was a crime drama, they got a bit overboard with people shooting each other with gunshot noises coming basically every 10 minutes in the film.

Vidyut Jammwal fails to impress us with his 'unrealistic' action sequences. The one in which he successfully escapes after defeating around 5-10 policemen on his own. Not to forget, without a scratch on his body. The overall acting of the cast was just about average and the film seemed longer than its run time.

With many other crime dramas available to watch online, do yourself a favour and skip this one.

While watching the trailer of 'Avrodh: The Siege Within,' the viewer immediately recalls watching Vicky Kaushal's 'Uri: The Surgical Strike'. But, the makers also mention that this web series is more about planning that went behind the Uri surgical strike rather than the execution.

Based on the chapter 'We don't really know fear' from the book 'India's Most Fearless,' it promises to give us the 'true story'.

Backstory: The Indian Army carried out surgical strikes against terror launchpads along the Line of Control on 29 September 2016. The surgical strikes were carried out nearly 10 days after the Uri terror attack where 18 soldiers were killed when terrorists launched a barrage of grenades at their army base in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir.

Directed by Raj Acharya, 'Avrodh: The Siege Within' has 9 episodes that are each roughly 40 minutes long. The challenge lying ahead of the makers was two-fold. Not only was every Indian already aware of the surgical strike but had also seen a film on the same topic back in 2019. So what more does the show have to offer to&nbsp;its audiences in order to keep them hooked?

The answer is - the build-up. Watch Avrodh not for the climax scenes, because the viewers are already aware and can predict when the Indian Army or the militants will strike at each other. But, the focus on the groundwork is where all the attention should go. Since the makers had the luxury of time, they were able to add much more matter to the plot than the movie could. For instance, tension&nbsp;between the two militant groups, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen, how the militant groups trained young boys in camps and the way India dealt with the news of a possible strike internationally.

The show's most known face is Amit Sadh, who plays the role of Videep Singh, the Para (special forces) commander of the Indian Army. Even though the trailer has a lot of his presence, the show sadly doesn't. We only get to see him make an entrance in the second half of the show. Sadh, who has time and again proven his brilliant acting skills, didn't get much screentime here to create an impression. Also, it really feels like he is every director's favorite choice for casting for a man in uniform. Even in 'Breathe' series, we got to see him in the role of a police officer.

The surgical strikes were carried out nearly 10 days after the Uri terror attack where 18 soldiers were killed when terrorists launched a barrage of grenades at their army base in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. Even though the trailer has a lot of his presence, the show sadly doesn't. We only get to see him make an entrance in the second half of the show. Sadh, who has time and again proven his brilliant acting skills, didn't get much screentime here to create an impression. Also, it really feels like he is every director's favorite choice for casting for a man in uniform. Even in 'Breathe' series, we got to see him in the role of a police officer.
