The Pakistan-Afghanistan spat over the whereabouts of terrorist Maulana Masood Azhar is getting more curious. After Taliban-led Afghanistan rejected Islamabad's claims that the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief is in the neighbouring country, Pakistan issued a rejoinder. Pakistan foreign ministry spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said on Thursday that Pakistan has "sufficient reasons" to be concerned that still there are pockets of "ungoverned spaces" within Afghanistan that are being used by terrorist groups as safe havens. Azhar is one of the terrorists freed by India in exchange for passengers of a hijacked plane of Indian Airlines in 1999. Since his release, he oversaw several terror attacks, including some targeting India. It's incredible and amusing at the same time to hear Thursday's statement from Pakistan, which is historically known to harbour terrorists. For many years, Azhar had freely roamed the country. It's unclear when and how he moved to Afghanistan, if at all the claims in this regard by Pakistan are correct. ALSO READ | No more funding from India to Sri Lanka as IMF talks progress: Sources Ahmed was asked about Pakistan's claims that Azhar, the founder of the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed, is currently on Afghanistan soil. He was also asked about the letter that Pakistan wrote asking the Afghan authorities to "locate and arrest" Azhar. Pakistan's foreign office even shared details of regions where Azhar is suspected to be residing. Pakistan says that Azhar is likely to be in the Nangarhar and Kunhar areas of Afghanistan. The Taliban had rejected the claims. The spokesperson replied to a question about Azhar's whereabouts and the Taliban's rebuttal saying the Pakistani authorities have formally raised this issue with their relevant Taliban interlocutors on multiple occasions. He said they have also shared documentary evidence and offered "intelligence and operational" assistance to locate the individual. ALSO READ | With USD 377 million in loans, India is Sri Lanka's top lender in 2022: Report The spokesperson said, "Pakistan, as well as the international community, have sufficient reasons to be concerned that there still remain pockets of ungoverned spaces within Afghanistan that are being used by terrorist groups as safe havens. Multiple deadly cross-border terrorist attacks from Afghanistan only increase these legitimate concerns." Pakistan's foreign ministry spokesperson also said that the Afghan interim authorities have repeatedly assured us and the wider international community that they would not allow terrorist groups to use their territory to operate against any other country. "We expect the Afghan interim authorities would take concrete and verifiable actions to deliver on these assurances. I think this will go a long way to improve their credibility and increase the confidence of the international community on their capacity and willingness to counter the persistent threats posed by terrorism," he added. The Taliban reject claims This comes after the Taliban's interim Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid made the strongly-worded remarks on the claims, as quoted by Afghanistan's ToloNews, Mujahid said, "This is not true. Nobody has made such a demand from us. Jaish-e-Mohammad chief is not in Afghanistan. Such organisations can operate on Pakistan’s soil – and even under official patronage. We’ll not allow anyone to use Afghanistan’s soil against any other country." Masood Azhar's JeM is responsible for multiple deadly attacks in India, including the attack on the Indian Parliament in December 2001. The attack had brought India and Pakistan to the brink of a full-scale war. Masood Azhar is India's most wanted terrorist. Support for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida tumbled to its lowest level since he took office, hit by growing anger over a state funeral for slain former leader Shinzo Abe and his ruling party's ties to a controversial church, an opinion poll showed.

Kishida's support fell to 32.3% from 44.3% a month before, according to the survey by Jiji news agency conducted at the weekend - approaching what is widely seen as a "danger level" of 30% that signifies a government may run into trouble carrying out its political agenda.

Those who did not support his government climbed to 40%, a rise of 11.5 points, Jiji added.

Links to the Unification Church, founded in South Korea in the 1950s, have become a growing headache for Kishida since July 8, when Abe was killed by a suspect who blamed him for supporting the church, which he said had bankrupted his mother.

Revelations following Abe's assassination of ties between the ruling party and the church, which has faced criticism over the years, have fed into anger about the cost of the Sept. 27 funeral, paid for solely by state funds, and how Kishida decided to hold it.

Kishida defended his decision in parliament last week, the same day his ruling party announced the results of its investigation into party ties to the church, but the poll found that 62.7% of respondents did not approve of his handling of the church matter, while 51.9% were against the state funeral.

Recovery from such steep falls in support may be difficult, analysts said.

"Even once the funeral's past, the problem with the Unification Church will continue. He'll probably face harsh questioning in parliament once it opens in October," said commentator Atsuo Ito.

"With the economy under stress as well, I'm not sure what will help him regain support."

'Seize this opportunity': WHO says end of COVID-19 pandemic is in sight

The head of Sweden's Moderate Party, Ulf Kristersson, said on Wednesday he would begin the work of forming a new government after Prime Minster Magdalena Andersson conceded her Social Democrats had lost the weekend's general election.

The Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals appear set to get 176 seats in the 349-seat parliament to the centre-left's 173 seats, according to the latest figures from the election authority.

A handful of votes remain to be counted, but the result is unlikely to change significantly.

"I will now start the work of forming a new government that can get things done," Kristersson said in a video on his Instagram account.

The election marks a watershed in Swedish politics with the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, a party with roots in the white supremacist fringe, on the threshold of gaining influence over government policy.

The success of the party, which took over from Kristersson's Moderates as the country's second biggest, has raised fears that Sweden's tolerant and inclusive politics are a thing of the past.

However, their mantra that Sweden's ills - particularly gang crime - are a result of decades of overgenerous immigration policies have hit home with many voters.

Kristersson said he would build a government "for all of Sweden and all citizens".

"There is a big frustration in society, a fear of the violence, concern about the economy, the world is very uncertain and the political polarisation has become far too big also in Sweden," he said. "Therefore my message is that I want to unite, not divide."

Though Kristersson's party is smaller, Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Akesson cannot get the broad backing from the right needed to oust the Social Democrats.

Kristersson is likely to try and form a government with the Christian Democrats and rely on support in parliament from the Sweden Democrats and Liberals.

WORRY

Prime Minister Andersson accepted defeat, but warned that many Swedes were worried about the Sweden Democrats' election success.

"I see your concern and I share it", she said.

The Sweden Democrats aim to make Sweden the European Union's toughest on immigration policy including legislation making it possible to deny people seeking asylum based on religious or LGBTQ grounds.

The party wants to slash economic benefits for immigrants and give more powers to police, including zones in troubled areas allowing searches without concrete suspicion of a crime.

The Sweden Democrats look set to win 20.6% of the vote, against 19.1% for the Moderates. The Social Democrats will be at 30.4%.

Commanding only a thin majority, Kristersson faces a number of challenges, not least the fact of his party's junior status.

Forming an administration and agreeing a budget will not be easy as the Liberals and Sweden Democrats refuse to serve together - or separately - in government and differ on many policies.

"Sweden is now going to get an administration that is only one or two parliamentary seats away from a government crisis," Andersson said.

She said the her door was open to Kristersson if he wanted to rethink his alliance with the Sweden Democrats.

In addition, Sweden is in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis and could be heading for recession next year.

Russia's war in Ukraine has destabilised the Baltic region - Sweden's backyard - and uncertainty remains over whether Turkey will finally agree to Stockholm's application for NATO membership.

Measures to address climate change and long term energy policy also need to be thrashed out while holes in the welfare system exposed by the pandemic need to be plugged and a planned surge in defence spending financed.

The result still has to be officially confirmed, probably by the weekend.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Swedish right prepares for power as PM accepts election defeat

Erling Haaland grabbed an outrageous 84th-minute winner against his former club Borussia Dortmund as Manchester City came from behind with two late goals to seal a 2-1 win in Champions League Group G on Wednesday.

The Norwegian has now scored 13 goals in eight games since making his move from the Bundesliga club and his latest was a brilliant finish as he leapt to guide home a wonderful cross with the outside of his boot by Joao Cancelo.

The ball was almost beyond Haaland as he leapt off the ground to reach a cross that most players would have tried to hit with their right foot.

But the towering blond forward is not like most players and he hooked the ball with the outside of his left foot into the Dortmund goal, prompting an astonished roar from the home crowd.

There was something inevitable about the 22-year-old, who scored 86 goals in 89 appearances for Dortmund, deciding the outcome but it was a surprise how much City had struggled for almost an hour.

Pep Guardiola opted to rotate his squad a little and his players struggled to find their usual tempo and fluency in a dull opening 45 minutes.

The German defence had coped with City's pedestrian build-up play with neither Jack Grealish or Riyad Mahrez getting much joy on the wings.

SHOT WIDE

The first real chance came in the 52nd minute and it fell to Dortmund with Marco Reus bustling in from the left but he scooped his shot wide of the far post.

Reus was more accurate, though, four minutes later when a corner reached him at the back of the penalty area and he whipped a ball back into the box for England international Jude Bellingham to head past Ederson.

Guardiola had been preparing a triple change when the goal was scored and he soon introduced Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez.

The trio provided the desired impact -- adding the missing pace and inventiveness to City's forward play but when they drew level in the 80th minute it was thanks to a defender.

Kevin De Bruyne played the ball inside to John Stones who blasted a fierce drive past Alexander Meyer from outside the box.

The momentum was with City and all Dortmund's efforts to neutralise Haaland counted for nothing when Cancelo produced his magical cross and the Norwegian his full stretch finish.

"In the end we showed what we are. This is what we are and this is how we have to play. I'm proud of the last 20, 25 minutes," Haaland said.

"We scored two wonderful goals today – mine was a bit better, honestly. It was a nice cross from Cancelo," he said.

Bellingham reflected on the predictability of the match-winner.

"Yeah I knew it (would be him) to be honest. Not many people know how to stop him. We did a really good job tonight and then he did what he does – unfortunately for us," he said.

City, who won their opening group game against Sevilla 4-0, top the standings on six points, three ahead of the Germans.

Microsoft came under scrutiny after Financial Times reported that the US-based tech company's deal to buy videogame publisher Activision Blizzard is expected to face an in-depth probe in Brussels and the United Kingdom.

Microsoft came under scrutiny after Financial Times reported that the US-based tech company's deal to buy videogame publisher Activision Blizzard is expected to face an in-depth probe in Brussels and the United Kingdom. Concerns were raised after reports emerged that Microsoft's $75 billion acquisition of video game maker Activision Blizzard is apparently anti-competitive and will exclude rivals from accessing the popular game Call of Duty. Any remedies to assuage competition concerns were not provided by the software maker. Citing people with knowledge of this particular deal, FT reported on Wednesday (September 14) that Microsoft has opted not to offer any remedies to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) because there were no obvious commitments the UK regulator would be likely to accept. The report mentioned that the UK's CMA is expected to launch an in-depth investigation this week. As quoted by the report, a person in Brussels who is familiar with the transaction said, "It is a big deal, a difficult deal. It needs an extensive investigation."
