The interview was set to take place at the UN General Assembly in New York City by CNN's Christiane Amanpour, who is of Iranian origin. It was supposed to be Raisi's first-ever interview on US soil, which eventually didn't happen.

In a series of tweets, Amanpour, who is a British-Iranian journalist and television host, revealed what exactly happened. She said, "After weeks of planning and eight hours of setting up translation equipment, lights and cameras, we were ready. But no sign of President Raisi."

Amanpour added, "40 minutes after the interview had been due to start, an aide came over. The president, he said, was suggesting I wear a headscarf, because it’s the holy months of Muharram and Safar."

"I politely declined. We are in New York, where there is no law or tradition regarding headscarves. I pointed out that no previous Iranian president has required this when I interviewed them outside Iran," she further said.

The cancellation of this interview came even as Iran is facing unprecedented nationwide protests against the forced practice of hijab in the country. President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia will use all available means to protect its territory as he has ordered the nation's first partial mobilisation since World War II. Putin said that the additional manpower was needed to win a war against not only Ukraine but also its Western backers.

In a televised address, Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu said that Russia will draft 300,000 reservists to support its military campaign in neighbouring Ukraine. Notably, this is a partial call-up as Russia's defence minister says that the nation has a reserve force of 25 million.

Putin's move has been labelled as an "act of desperation" by the West. On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz insisted Russia "cannot win this criminal war" in Ukraine and that Putin "with his most recent decision makes everything much worse".

Since the announcement, there have been several reports on how it has impacted the common people in Russia.

Flights out of Russia sell out

One-way flights out of the country were surging in price and selling out fast. Google Trends data showed an increase in the demand for direct flights from Moscow. There was a spike in searches for Aviasales, which is Russia's most popular flight-booking site.

Aviasales data also showed that the direct flights from Moscow to Istanbul in Turkey and Yerevan in Armenia were sold out on Wednesday. Notably, both destinations allow Russians to enter without a visa.

No tickets being sold to Russian men aged 18-65

In the latest development, media reports stated that the Russian airlines had stopped selling tickets to Russian men between the age of 18 to 65, those who are potential to be drafted into the reservists' list.

Dozens were arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg

More than 700 people were detained across Russia at protests against mobilisation on Wednesday, a rights group said. The independent OVD-Info protest monitoring group said it was aware of detentions in at least 36 different cities. Unsanctioned rallies are illegal under Russia's anti-protest laws.

'I am concerned': Russian in Istanbul

One Russian man arriving at Istanbul Airport said he had left partly over the Kremlin's decision. "Partial mobilisation is one of the reasons why I am here. Very poor step and it seem to be that it can lead to lots of problems to lots of Russian citizens. I am concerned. I didn't believe that the next step would be mobilisation and I feel that not many Russian people want to fight and want to be mobilised and want to go to the army," said Alex as quoted by news agency Reuters. He declined to give surname due to safety concerns.

Kremlin's response

Meanwhile, Kremlin has responded by stating that the reports of an exodus of fighting-age men are exaggerated. In a call with reporters, Peskov said: "The information about the hype at airports and so on is very much exaggerated ... There is a lot of fake information about this. We need to be very careful about this so as not to become a victim of false information on this matter."

Britain on Wednesday launched a six-month plan starting in October to pay about half of energy bills for businesses, as Prime Minister Liz Truss seeks to stop companies going under as a result of rocketing prices.

The news precedes a mini-budget Friday when finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng is expected to unveil tax cuts to help a nation struggling with decades-high inflation.

Wholesale electricity and gas prices for businesses -- except the energy sector -- as well as charities, hospitals and schools will be capped at half the expected cost on the open market, the government said in a statement.

The announcement comes after Truss launched plans for a two-year household energy price freeze which also starts next month.

"We have stepped in to stop businesses collapsing, protect jobs and limit inflation," Kwarteng said Wednesday.

The chancellor of the exchequer will Friday set out the overall cost of both energy freeze schemes.

His budget will seek to boost economic growth amid forecasts that Britain will this year sink into recession on sky-high energy bills fuelled by the invasion of Ukraine by major oil and gas producer Russia.

'Eases worries'

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) welcomed Wednesday's announcement.

"The package will ease worries about otherwise viable businesses shutting-up shop," said Matthew Fell, chief policy director at the lobby group.

The CBI meanwhile urged a long-term energy solution to increase Britain's supplies while ramping up efficiency measures to lower demand.

Truss took office on September 6, two days before the death of Queen Elizabeth II, after winning an election of Conservative party members on a tax-cutting platform.

She is committed to scrapping planned tax hikes on both company profits and salaries that predecessor Boris Johnson signed off upon.

Media reports suggest that the government will also scrap an EU limit on bankers' bonuses following Brexit.

On the London stock market, homebuilders saw their shares rebound on speculation that Truss could cut tax levied on purchases of residential properties.

Trickle-down economics

The tax-cutting plans like those proposed by Truss have come in for criticism from US President Joe Biden, who spoke out against the policy of "trickle-down economics" favoured by the Democrat's Republican opponents.

The approach hinges on hopes that policies which immediately boost the wealthy will trickle down the economy to reach the less well-off.

"I am sick and tired of trickle-down economics. It has never worked," Biden had tweeted on Tuesday.

Speaking ahead of Biden's tweet, Truss addressed this point.

"I don't accept this argument that cutting taxes is somehow unfair," she told Sky News earlier this week.

"What we know is people on higher incomes generally pay more tax.

"So when you reduce taxes, there is often a disproportionate benefit because those people are paying more taxes in the first place," she added.

The two leaders meet Wednesday at the UN in New York.

A day later, the Bank of England is expected to once more ramp up its main interest rate in a bid to dampen sky-high inflation.

Economists warn that the UK's cost-of-living measures will ravage public finances already reeling from pandemic expenditure.

Analysts from British bank Barclays estimate the cost of the government's total spending could hit £235 billion ($267 billion).

While official data Wednesday showed British public borrowing improved in August, it is expected to surge as the government funds the planned tax cuts.

Public sector net borrowing, the state's preferred measure of the deficit, hit £11.8 billion last month, the Office for National Statistics said.

That was down from £14.4 billion a year earlier but was far more than its pre-pandemic 2019 level of £5.3 billion.

In a tougher stance against employees doing a second job after hours, an Indian multinational corporation Wipro Ltd. has fired almost 300 employees for "moonlighting."

Rishad Premji, the company's chairman and a prominent opponent of moonlighting, declared that any employee who chooses to work directly with competitors while still being paid by Wipro has no place in the organisation.

Speaking at an All India Management Association event, he declared that moonlighting is "a complete violation of integrity in its deepest form."

The truth is that there are currently 300 people working for one of Wipro's competitors while also directly working for another company, according to Premji.

Later, when questioned about the actions taken against the 300 employees, he responded that in those particular cases of violation, services have been terminated.

IT companies are concerned that when staff members take on additional jobs outside of regular working hours, it will reduce productivity, create conflicts of interest, and maybe result in data breaches.

Premji has been an outspoken opponent of it and has compared it to "cheating." He stated on Twitter last month, "there is a lot of chatter about people moonlighting in the tech industry. This is cheating - plain and simple."

His tweet received a lot of attention from the sector, and many IT organisations increased their vigilance against similar tactics.

In a memo sent to its employees last week, Infosys emphasised that dual employment is not permitted and cautioned that any breach of contract provisions would result in disciplinary action "which could even lead to termination of employment".

"No two-timing - no moonlighting!," the second-largest IT services provider in India, Infosys, told its staff last week in a stern warning.

Due to the present attention being placed on the difficult issue, some industry observers have encouraged businesses to consider implementing additional security measures to protect sensitive data and operating models, especially in situations when employees work remotely. Analysts have predicted that employers may enforce exclusivity clauses in employment contracts more strictly.

The world said a final goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-serving monarch, on Monday (September 19). The historic state funeral and the public mourning ended when Queen's coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault. World leaders and royals from across the globe arrived in London for the final farewell to the Queen. Huge crowds also gathered in London to watch the Queen's flag-draped coffin. The funeral procession concluded with the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre—symbols of the monarch's power and governance—being removed from the coffin and placed on the altar. After that, Lord Chamberlain, who is the most senior official in the royal household, broke his 'Wand of Office' and placed it on the casket. It signified the end of his service to the sovereign. 'Queen of the world' Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan said that Queen Elizabeth II was "symbolically queen of the world". While speaking outside Buckingham Palace, Queen Rania told CNN that Queen Elizabeth was "public service personified". Queen Rania said, "She is a woman who pledged her life to the service of her people, and for 70 years never once fell short of that promise. She was the queen of England, but she's also symbolically the queen of the world. She means something to all of us." ALSO READ | With Queen laid to rest, British politics to swing back into action Goodbye to a monarch, a mother and a matriarch Queen Elizabeth emerged as one of the strongest pillars of the British Royal Family. She steered the monarchy through many turbulent times. She stood strong during the decades of social change and remained a symbol of national stability in a shifting world. As a monarch, she kept the monarchy relevant through the decades, even during the chants of "abolish monarchy". But now the door swings shut on the Elizabethan Era. As a mother, Queen Elizabeth has seen several ups and downs. She was often portrayed as a standoffish mother, who would give more time to the throne than her family. As per reports, she mainly saw her children during breakfast and teatime because of her busy schedule. Most of the time, she stayed away to perform royal duties and nannies took care of the kids. Just like a normal mother, maintaining a work-life balance was rather challenging. Martin Charteris, a former senior adviser to Queen Elizabeth II, explained in Prince Charles' biography, "Somehow even those contacts were lacking in warmth. The Queen is not good at showing affection." WATCH | Queen Elizabeth II Final Farewell: Royal family to gather for a private burial service × ALSO READ | Queen Elizabeth funeral: Here's why Prince Harry did not wear military uniform According to Lord Mountbatten, Prince Philip's uncle, Queen Elizabeth II's favourite night of the week was "Mabel's night off". This was apparently the night when Charles and Anne's nanny took a break. He was quoted as saying, "When nanny Mabel was off duty, Elizabeth could kneel beside the bath, bathe her babies, read to them and put them to bed herself." From King Charles III's divorce from Diana to Prince Andrew's sex assault case, Queen Elizabeth stood strong during testing times and didn't let the difficult circumstances affect the royal family. Queen Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, and she was just 27 years old when she was crowned Queen of Britain. She wouldn't have thought that she will become one of the most prominent global figures in decades to come when she was just a kid. The eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, would have expected to play just a supporting role in the monarchy. But destiny had something else in store. Now, the world has said goodbye to a prominent female leader in a world dominated by men. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Mother, monarch and a matriarch: Goodbye to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II

After United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8, orders for thousands of British flags were given to a factory in China. As per news agency The Associated Press, more than 100 employees were set aside from other work to make British-themed flags. This comes after a diplomatic spat saw Chinese officials barred from visiting the late monarch's coffin.

In the south of Shanghai, at the Shaoxing Chuangdong Tour Articles Co., employees were putting in around 14 hours per day and they used to start the work early in the morning.

According to general manager Fan Aiping, they turned out at least 500,000 in the first week. The report mentioned that some British flags were to be carried by mourners or hung outside homes. Several flags showed the Queen's portrait and the years of her birth and death.

As per Fan, the first customer sent an order at 3 am (local time) for tens of thousands of flags. She further added that the factory had around 20,000 in stock that were sent out that morning.
