Millions of people in the Chinese megacity of&nbsp;Chengdu&nbsp;emerged Monday from a Covid-19 lockdown that had closed schools, disrupted businesses and forced residents to stay home for over two weeks.

With a population of 21 million, southwest China's&nbsp;Chengdu&nbsp;is the largest Chinese city to shut down since global finance hub Shanghai imposed a strict two-month lockdown in April, leaving many residents scrambling for food.

China is the last major economy welded to a zero-Covid strategy and officials are under pressure to curb virus flare-ups swiftly ahead of a key political meeting in mid-October.

"With the joint efforts of the whole city, the epidemic has been effectively controlled," the&nbsp;Chengdu&nbsp;government said in a statement Sunday.

Government departments, public transport services and companies were able to resume work on Monday, the statement said, after shutting down on September 1.

Chengdu&nbsp;will continue to conduct mass testing, and anyone who wants to enter a public area or take public transport will require a negative Covid test result within 72 hours -- similar to the rules in other large cities including Beijing and Shanghai.

Schools will re-open in an "orderly manner" and returning students will be strictly tested, the statement said.

Gyms, swimming pools, mahjong clubs and other indoor entertainment venues must all check whether patrons have a negative test result within 48 hours.

No new cases were reported in the city on Monday.

During the strict lockdown some residents confined to their homes could not even flee when a strong earthquake in a nearby part of Sichuan province reverberated through the city earlier this month, locals told AFP.

Chengdu&nbsp;will host the world team table tennis championships at the end of September in a "closed-loop" bubble that will be China's first international sports event since the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics in February and March.

Quarantine bus crash

Several other cities including the southern tech hub of Shenzhen and Guiyang in south China, where Apple's China data centre is located, have all had targeted lockdowns and travel restrictions in recent weeks as officials rushed to curb mini outbreaks.

On Sunday, 27 people died en route to a quarantine facility when their bus crashed on a highway in rural Guizhou province in southwest China.

Authorities apologised and launched a probe into the accident, which sparked outrage online.

"What proof do you have that you won't be on that bus at night someday?" read one viral Weibo post with thousands of likes.

China reported 807 new domestic infections on Monday, the majority of which were asymptomatic, according to the National Health Commission.

Thousands of McDonald's employees, mostly women, filed complaints of sexual harassment over the years. Reports have stated that they have been denied a hearing in appropriate forums.&nbsp;

In a report, Deutsche Welle published an account of an employee, who told the media outlet how her first job at McDonald's turned into a nightmare when she became a victim of sexual harassment.&nbsp;

Thousands of McDonald's employees suffer sexual harassment: Report

A Swiss woman was given a nine-year jail term on Monday for slashing two people in the name of the Islamic State group but her sentence was suspended so she can undergo psychiatric treatment.

The court found the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, guilty of attempted murder and of terrorism-linked charges.

She had "no respect for human life", court president Fiorenza Bergomi said as she read out the verdict.&nbsp;

She had "acted in cold blood, had planned her actions and decided what weapon to use, and where to buy it", Bergomi continued.

The 29-year-old woman's mental state was at the heart of the trial at&nbsp;Switzerland's Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona, in the southern Italian-speaking Ticino region where the attack occurred.

The attack, which did not result in fatalities, took place on November 24, 2020 in the plush Manor department store in Lugano, near Bellinzona.

The woman had suddenly lunged at two random women shopping at the store, attempting to slit their throats.

According to the Office of the Attorney General's indictment, the accused "acted wilfully and with particular ruthlessness", shouted "Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) several times and "I will avenge the Prophet Mohammed", and declared "I am here for IS", the Islamic State jihadist group.

No remorse

One of the two victims suffered a serious neck injury, while the second sustained wounds on one hand and managed, with others, to control the assailant until the police arrived.

During the trial, the court heard that the woman has been in contact with psychologists and psychiatrists since childhood, with two experts testifying that she suffers from a range of psychological disorders.

Her lawyers argue the accused's psychological disorders mean the attack could not be considered a "terrorist act" because the woman lived in a fantasy world.

When questioned during the trial, the woman showed no remorse, telling the court: "If I could go back, I would do it better."

On Monday, she was found guilty of "repeated murder attempts" and of violating the Swiss laws against association with Al-Qaeda, IS and related Islamist groups.&nbsp;

She was&nbsp;also found guilty of repeated unlawful prostitution between 2017 and 2020.

The accused was ordered to pay the woman who suffered the most serious injuries, and who was a civil party in the case, 41,000 Swiss francs ($42,000) to cover her legal costs and as compensation for the "moral wrong".

'Lone wolves'

The court president pointed to studies indicating that terror suspects could suffer from stress and psychiatric problems.

"We must not forget that there are... people with psychiatric problems who do not belong to terrorist organisations, but who are considered lone wolves," she said.

Monday's verdict was in line with the prosecution's request, but her sentence was shorter than the 14-year-term it had asked for.

The prosecutors, who had also suggested her sentence be suspended and that she be committed to a closed treatment facility for as long as she was deemed a threat, said Monday that they "took note" of the verdict, but did not indicate whether they would appeal.

The daughter of a Swiss father and a Serbian mother, her adolescence was marked by anorexia and she did not attend secondary school.

Aged 19, she married a man of Afghan origin and converted to Islam. The pair divorced last year.

After falling in love over social media in 2017 with a jihadist in Syria, she attempted to travel to meet him, but was stopped by Turkish authorities at the Syrian border and sent back to&nbsp;Switzerland&nbsp;where she was admitted to a psychiatric clinic, police said.

India: Amarinder Singh joins BJP, also merges Punjab Lok Congress with the party

Terrorist Mohammed Masood Azhar Alvi, who is responsible for multiple attacks in India, recently gained media attention when claims and counterclaims regarding his whereabouts were made.

Terrorist Mohammed Masood Azhar Alvi, who is responsible for multiple attacks in India, recently gained media attention when claims and counterclaims regarding his whereabouts were made. Pakistan claimed that Masood Azhar is in the neighbouring country Afghanistan. Kabul denied the claims, saying such organisations can operate on Pakistan's soil, even under "official patronage". India's most-wanted, Masood Azhar is one of the most dreaded terrorists in the world. He is the founder and leader of the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). JeM is responsible for multiple deadly attacks in India, including the attack on the Indian Parliament in December 2001. The impact of the attack was massive, it had brought India and Pakistan to the brink of a full-scale war. Some reports say Azhar was born in Bahawalpur, Punjab, Pakistan on July 10, 1968, some reports say he was born on August 7, 1968. Accounts of his early life depend on claims and reports. Masood Azhar was the third of 11 children, six daughters and five sons. His father, Allah Bakhsh Shabbir, is said to be a headmaster at a government-run school. ALSO READ | Pakistan and Afghanistan's farce over Masood Azhar. Concerning, but amusing After dropping out of mainstream school after class 8th, Azhar graduated in 1989 from the Jamia Uloom Islamic school. It is said that the madrasa was heavily involved with Harkat-ul-Ansar, an Islamic militant group. As per reports, Azhar was enrolled on a jihad-training camp in Afghanistan. The JeM chief had joined the Soviet-Afghan War and retired after suffering injuries. He was appointed to Harkat's department of motivation as the head. Reports related to his early life showed signs of where his life was actually heading. 'The man who brought jihad to Britain' To raise funds and spread the message of 'Islamism', Azhar visited many countries like Zambia, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Mongolia, the United Kingdom and Albania after becoming the general secretary of Harkat-ul-Ansar. His activities in Britain are quite elaborate. Azhar entered the UK in 1993 with the main objectives of raising funds and recruiting. He has given the message of jihad at some of the most prestigious Islamic institutions including the Darul Uloom Bury seminary, Zakariya Mosque, Madina Masjid in Blackburn and Burnley, and Jamia Masjid. In 2016, BBC published a research-based opinion labelling him as a man who "brought jihad to Britain". In Britain, Azhar made contacts that eventually helped to provide training and logistical support for many terror plots. Was arrested in India, but later released Azhar was arrested by Indian authorities in 1994 from Khanabal near Anantnag. The investigation was underway and he was jailed for his terrorist activities with the groups. But in a dramatic turn of events, the authorities had to release Azhar. He is one of the terrorists freed by India in exchange for passengers of a hijacked plane of Indian Airlines in 1999. Jaish-e-Mohammed The establishment of this new terror outfit, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), was planned by Azhar. If reports are to be believed, he had received help from Pakistan's premier intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, and several other extremist groups. He is responsible for many deadly attacks in India, including the attack on the Indian parliament in December 2001. The Pakistan-based terrorist organisation was also linked to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The Pathankot attack on an Indian air base in 2016 was reportedly masterminded by Masood Azhar and his brother. He also perpetrated the Pulwama attack in 2019, in which India's 44 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed. After the attack, some countries including, France, the United Kingdom and the United States moved a proposal to UN Security Council to ban him. Why did China 'save' Azhar? India and some other Western countries were trying to nab this terrorist, but China appeared to have some other intentions. A UN Security Council Sanctions Committee listing Azhar as a terrorist was blocked by the Chinese government. China cited 'lack of evidence' when attempts were made by UNSC. There have been four attempts to put Azhar on the agency's counter-terrorism sanctions list, but every time China vetoed it. However, in 2019, China pulled the blockade. It resulted in the listing of Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the Al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee. This UN-designated terrorist walks free as two nations continue the diplomatic spat over its whereabouts. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. JeM chief Masood Azhar: India's most wanted, and the 'man who brought jihad to Britain'

From the elderly to small children, millions of people are mourning the demise of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8 at her home in Scotland. She was 96. The sad demise of the Queen led to an outpouring of emotion and public grief showed what Britain's longest-serving monarch meant for the commoners.&nbsp;

London transport chiefs estimated that over 750,000 people could join the queue for the queen's lying-in-state. It is expected that more than a million people will be travelling to London over the whole 10-day public mourning period including the funeral, which is scheduled to take place on September 19.&nbsp;

Around 33,000 people filed past the monarch in the space of 24 hours when her coffin was laid at rest in Edinburgh's St. Giles' Cathedral on Monday and Tuesday.&nbsp;

IN PICS |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/heres-whats-special-about-queen-elizabeth-iis-royal-coffin-515547">Here's what's special about Queen Elizabeth II's 'royal' coffin</a>&nbsp;

On Friday (September 16), entry to a queue to see the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth was&nbsp;paused for "at least" six hours as people were waiting in line to pay their respects in Westminster Hall.

The UK government said that a holding area in a park at the end of the line along the Thames had reached five miles (eight kilometres). Over tens of thousands of people already paying their respects ahead of the state funeral.&nbsp;

Some are fainting, and many are in discomfort, but despite all the evident issues, people are ready to wait in queues, even for overnight hours, to see the coffin and pay their respects. People know that they have to wait maybe 24&nbsp;hours (as displayed by the electronic signs, trackers, etc), but they are still waiting.&nbsp;

What's the reason behind public grief?&nbsp;

But why is it happening? Why are people not even close to the Queen grieving for the loss of someone they knew and loved? The situation highlights the question of whether or not strong feelings of loss for someone you have never met even be considered grief.&nbsp;

What is grief? Grief is a response to the loss, particularly to the loss of someone or some living thing that has died. We grieve for those with whom we form a bond or affection. It is said that the state is focused on the emotional response to loss, but grief also has physical, cognitive, behavioural, social, cultural, spiritual and philosophical dimensions.&nbsp;

What do the experts say?&nbsp;

In a report by Nature, Michael Cholbi, a philosopher and ethicist at the University of Edinburgh, UK, said as quoted that most grief research has focused on the loss of parents, close friends or spouses.&nbsp;

Cholbi said that the one-sided relationships between a person and a well-known public figure are called parasocial relationships.&nbsp;

Cholbi said, "I certainly think that parasocial relationships can give rise to grief. I don't see why we should anticipate that grief would only arise, only make sense, within the context of reciprocal relationships."&nbsp;

According to the report, some researchers attribute parasocial grief to a loss of possibility. Philosopher Louise Richardson said, "The experience of grief is a kind of disruption to the experience of the world overall. When it happens, there’s a kind of shattering of your assumptions." Richardson is a co-director of a project at the University of York, UK, called Grief: A Study of Human Emotional Experience.&nbsp;

She basically cites a theory called the assumptive world, which suggests that a person has strongly held and grounding assumptions about the world.&nbsp;

She said, "The kind of losses that we grieve over are the ones that disrupt that assumptive world, which can explain feelings of grief about the death of the Queen."&nbsp;

Cholbi also suggested that if people have invested their identities with public figures, then they will mourn their loss. It does make sense. &nbsp; &nbsp;

"This is the loss of someone that has played a part in their own values and concerns. So it feels like not just kind of a loss of the person, but in a certain way, a small loss of an aspect of oneself," she added.&nbsp;

From the elderly to small children, millions of people are mourning the demise of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8 at her home in Scotland.

From the elderly to small children, millions of people are mourning the demise of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8 at her home in Scotland. She was 96. The sad demise of the Queen led to an outpouring of emotion and public grief showed what Britain's longest-serving monarch meant for the commoners. London transport chiefs estimated that over 750,000 people could join the queue for the queen's lying-in-state. It is expected that more than a million people will be travelling to London over the whole 10-day public mourning period including the funeral, which is scheduled to take place on September 19. Around 33,000 people filed past the monarch in the space of 24 hours when her coffin was laid at rest in Edinburgh's St. Giles' Cathedral on Monday and Tuesday. IN PICS | Here's what's special about Queen Elizabeth II's 'royal' coffin On Friday (September 16), entry to a queue to see the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth was paused for "at least" six hours as people were waiting in line to pay their respects in Westminster Hall. The UK government said that a holding area in a park at the end of the line along the Thames had reached five miles (eight kilometres). Over tens of thousands of people already paying their respects ahead of the state funeral. Some are fainting, and many are in discomfort, but despite all the evident issues, people are ready to wait in queues, even for overnight hours, to see the coffin and pay their respects. People know that they have to wait maybe 24 hours (as displayed by the electronic signs, trackers, etc), but they are still waiting. ALSO READ | Queen Elizabeth and her beloved corgis; all about late monarch's most loyal companion What's the reason behind public grief? But why is it happening? Why are people not even close to the Queen grieving for the loss of someone they knew and loved? The situation highlights the question of whether or not strong feelings of loss for someone you have never met even be considered grief. What is grief? Grief is a response to the loss, particularly to the loss of someone or some living thing that has died. We grieve for those with whom we form a bond or affection. It is said that the state is focused on the emotional response to loss, but grief also has physical, cognitive, behavioural, social, cultural, spiritual and philosophical dimensions. WATCH | The Royal Family: Here's how you can follow the updated social media handles × What do the experts say? In a report by Nature, Michael Cholbi, a philosopher and ethicist at the University of Edinburgh, UK, said as quoted that most grief research has focused on the loss of parents, close friends or spouses. Cholbi said that the one-sided relationships between a person and a well-known public figure are called parasocial relationships. Cholbi said, "I certainly think that parasocial relationships can give rise to grief. I don't see why we should anticipate that grief would only arise, only make sense, within the context of reciprocal relationships." According to the report, some researchers attribute parasocial grief to a loss of possibility. Philosopher Louise Richardson said, "The experience of grief is a kind of disruption to the experience of the world overall. When it happens, there’s a kind of shattering of your assumptions." Richardson is a co-director of a project at the University of York, UK, called Grief: A Study of Human Emotional Experience. She basically cites a theory called the assumptive world, which suggests that a person has strongly held and grounding assumptions about the world. She said, "The kind of losses that we grieve over are the ones that disrupt that assumptive world, which can explain feelings of grief about the death of the Queen." Cholbi also suggested that if people have invested their identities with public figures, then they will mourn their loss. It does make sense. "This is the loss of someone that has played a part in their own values and concerns. So it feels like not just kind of a loss of the person, but in a certain way, a small loss of an aspect of oneself," she added. PM Shehbaz Sharif says 'even friendly countries think Pakistan is always begging'

The equities market fell sharply on Friday during the afternoon trade due to a heavy sell-off in IT, PSU Banks, and Auto stocks following weak Asian markets on concerns of global recession, dealers said.

At 2.10 pm, Sensex was down 1050.03 points or 1.75 per cent at 58,883.98, and Nifty was trading 326.56 points or 1.83 per cent lower at 17,550.85.

Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Tech Mahindra, Ultratech Cement, TCS, Infosys, Wipro were major losers during the afternoon trade.

Nifty IT and BSE IT index were down 2.91 per cent and 2.69 per cent respectively. Nifty PSU Bank index was down 2.79 per cent and BSE Auto was down 3.25 per cent.

"Indian equity markets are witnessing some selling pressure after a long period of resilience. Global cues continuously remain weak as there is a sharp surge in the dollar index and US bond yields post US inflation numbers. We may continue to outperform, but we can`t remain in isolation for a long time. Global markets are looking nervous ahead of the FOMC meeting because there is talk of a 100 basis rate hike while a 75 basis rate hike was already discounted," said Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd.

Asian markets remained weak&nbsp;on Friday due to growing fears of a global recession after the warnings by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.3 per cent. Australian shares were down 0.94 per cent on Friday, while Japan`s Nikkei stock index slipped 1.2 per cent.

The world may edge toward a global recession in 2023 as central banks across the world simultaneously hike interest rates to combat persistent inflation, the World Bank said.

The economies of the US, China, and the eurozone, were slowing and a slight hit to the global economy further would lead to recession.

"Technically, Nifty is facing resistance at the 18,100 level and it has slipped below its 20-DMA of 17,700 which may lead to some more selling pressure where 17,470-17,400 is an immediate demand zone then 17,150 is a sacrosanct support level. Bank Nifty is outperforming but yesterday it ended at a day's low after hitting a fresh all-time high, which is a little disappointing. On the downside, 40,900-40,700 is an immediate demand zone; below this, 40,270 is the next important support level," Meena added.&nbsp;
