Microsoft lays off nearly 1,000 workers across multiple divisions: Report

Amid a rise in cases after the Ebola outbreak in Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni imposed a lockdown on two districts on Saturday. Restrictions have been imposed on personal travel, a night curfew has been ordered in the districts, which are at the epicentre of the outbreak. The authorities have also closed public places.

Now, the news agency Reuters has reported citing government sources that the United States sent Gilead Sciences' remdesivir and Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc's experimental Ebola antibody drug MBP134 to Uganda last week.

The aid is aimed at safeguarding the healthcare workers who are currently responding to the outbreak. Authorities have also revealed that around 60 people are infected and at least 44 dead because of the virus.

Remdesivir is the undisclosed monoclonal antibody that had been given to healthcare workers. The information was disclosed by the health minister of Uganda, Jane Ruth Aceng, at a meeting of African region health officials last week in Kampala. Aceng apparently mentioned the US shipments of the medicines. Remdesivir has been widely used as a (coronavirus) COVID-19 treatment.

Joel Montgomery, who is the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s chief of the viral special pathogens branch and incident manager for the outbreak, said that providing treatment that protects the lives of healthcare workers could be central to containing the outbreak.

Montgomery said, "If healthcare workers start to fall ill and die, it's going to negatively impact the response." He had just returned from a trip to Uganda.

Ebola outbreak: US sends experimental antibody and antiviral drug to Uganda

A new study suggests that the next viral pandemic may emerge from the Arctic amid melting glaciers caused by climatic change, increasing risks of next Ebola, influenza, or SARS-CoV-2 arriving sooner than predicted by the experts.

A new study suggests that the next viral pandemic may emerge from the Arctic amid melting glaciers caused by climatic change, increasing risks of next Ebola, influenza, or SARS-CoV-2 arriving sooner than predicted by the experts. In an attempt to identify viruses present in the environment, researchers analysed solid and lake sediment from Lake Hazen, a freshwater lake in the northern part of Ellesmere Island in Canada (north of the Arctic Circle). The scientists sequenced segments of DNA and RNA found in the soil. They used a computer algorithm to understand how the viruses are related to animal, plant, and fungi hosts present in the area. After the analysis, the team learned about the viral spillover risk. ALSO READ | COVID-19: Multiple variants dominate the world. What will happen next? The risk is basically the ability for viruses to reach into new host species, and eventually keep spreading. Similar to what the world saw during the initial spread of SARS-CoV-2. In their paper published in 'Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences', the researchers wrote: "Spillover risk increases with runoff from glacier melt, a proxy for climate change. Should climate change also shift species range of potential viral vectors and reservoirs northwards, the High Arctic could become fertile ground for emerging pandemics." ALSO READ | Despite disappointing results, researchers still hope for 'AstraZeneca' The researchers also compared the evolutionary path of both viruses and hosts. They sought to find what are the variations and similarities between the two. The comparison could help the experts to understand the possibility of a change to the status quo and subsequent viral spillover. While explaining it, the researchers wrote in the paper: "From an evolutionary standpoint, viruses are more prone to infecting hosts that are phylogenetically close to their natural host, potentially because it is easier for them to infect and colonize species that are genetically similar." The brutal murder of a 12-year-old schoolgirl shocked the French capital Paris. Her body was discovered on Friday in a container in the courtyard of her apartment building. A source close to the case told the news agency AFP that Paris investigators on Monday (October 17) charged a woman suspected of raping and murdering the young girl named Lola. A 24-year-old Algerian-born woman is the main suspect in the case. She was arrested by police earlier this Saturday. The woman is named in the press as Dahbia B. Reports have stated that she is suffering from psychiatric disorders. She was questioned by the police earlier Monday alongside an older man suspected of sheltering her. The AFP source also said that Dahbia B has been charged with the rape and murder of a minor aged under 15. She is also accused of torture and abuse and a judge has ordered to keep her in provisional custody. Lola's father raised dan alert when her daughter didn't return home in the afternoon from school. The investigation began after that and Lola's body was found inside the container. Reports mentioned that her hands and feet were tied and her body was hidden by a covering of material. The autopsy revealed that the young girl died due to "cardio-respiratory failure with signs of asphyxia and cervical compression" and reports mentioned that she had a gash on her neck. Other non-fatal wounds were found on her face and back. The numbers 0 and 1 were written in red on the soles of each of her feet, which was quite strange. The prosecutors said that she then "committed harm of a sexual nature and other violent acts against (Lola) that caused her death, and hid her body in the trunk." Prosecutors added: "Investigations are continuing to determine exactly what happened (and) to establish the criminal responsibility of the people involved." Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the president of the Indian National Congress on Wednesday (October 19) as he defeated Shashi Tharoor in the party election, only the sixth in its history of 137 years.

Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the president of the Indian National Congress on Wednesday (October 19) as he defeated Shashi Tharoor in the party election, only the sixth in its history of 137 years. A new era has begun for the current opposition party in India as Kharge became its first non-Gandhi president in 24 years. He will succeed Sonia Gandhi, who held the fort in recent years during several ups and downs. Sonia emerged as an anchor during crucial moments, especially when the party's stature was slightly overshadowed by the dominance of India's ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in successive elections, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies. Mallikarjun Kharge received 7,897 votes, and his rival Shashi Tharoor managed to get only 1,072. This huge-victory margin clearly shows what the party members actually wanted as their new game plan. A total of 9,915 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates formed the electoral college to pick next party chief in a secret ballot. Over 9,500 cast their ballot at PCC offices and the AICC headquarters on Monday. Who is Mallikarjun Kharge? Kharge was born in Karnataka, a state in southwest India, on July 21 in 1942. After college, Kharge began his legal practice as a junior in Justice Shivaraj Patil's office. Starting his political career as a student union leader in college, Kharge emerged as a stalwart in Indian politics. Throughout his career, he led many fights for the rights of labourers. He fought legal cases for labour unions early in his career, many of them pro bono. He became the legal adviser to MSK Mills Employees' Union in 1969 and was also an influential labour union leader of Samyukta Majdoor Sangh. Kharge was the leader of the opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and was the president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 2008. The 80-year-old was the leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha during 2014–2019 and the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha from February 16, 2021, to October 01, 2022. He had previously served as the minister of railways and minister of labour and employment in the Union government. He won elections a record 10 consecutive times. He first contested the Karnataka State Assembly elections in 1972 and won from the Gurmitkal constituency an unprecedented nine consecutive times (1972, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2009). G-23 leaders of Congress The change is not sudden, senior leaders have been trying for it for quite some time. After facing a series of defeats in Lok Sabha and assembly elections of several states in the past few years, some veteran leaders of the party voiced concerns and highlighted several issues. The G-23 leaders, as they came to be known, wrote a letter to interim party chief Sonia Gandhi in August 2020 and demanded active leadership and organisational rejig, which intensified with time. Congress party's new non-Gandhi card for a new game After conceding the election, Tharoor said he believed "the revival of the party begins today". To some extent, it appears to be true as voices kept emerging to give leadership to someone, not from the Gandhi family, in an attempt to end dynasty politics. In a letter, Tharoor wrote: "I have always expressed the view that these elections, irrespective of the outcome, must ultimately strengthen the party. It gives me immense personal satisfaction that this has clearly been the case." "Our democratic contest has galvanised vibrancy at all levels and has prompted a healthy and constructive discussion on change, which I believe will serve the party in good stead in the future," he added. But how exactly it will pan out, only time will tell. Especially, Kharge's plan to win elections, keeping an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha battle. Kharge will have to accelerate planning as BJP has already moved ahead with aggressive preparations for the general elections and come up with a blueprint to analyse its position in 144 Lok Sabha constituencies where its performance was not up to the mark in the last general election. World population to reach eight billion this year, but UN warns against 'population alarmism'. Here's why

A giant fish, discovered in the Azores archipelago in Portugal last year, weighed around three tonnes (2,744 kilogrammes). The large ocean sunfish, believed to be the world's heaviest bony fish, was found dead.

Hurricane Ian left a trail of destruction after it crashed across Florida on September 28-29. Recovery efforts are underway but the challenges are not over yet as people now have to deal with environmental hazards that could pose serious health threats.

Millions were impacted by Hurricane Ian, which is one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States. Officials have said that over 100 people were killed in Florida alone.

Those who were impacted, are still struggling as homes, restaurants and businesses were destroyed when the powerful Category 4 Hurricane Ian roared ashore.

As per the officials, it could take months and perhaps $50 billion or more to rebuild the regions in Florida that were destroyed.

Amid the recovery efforts, people across the state are grappling with serious health risks. After the storm and subsequent flooding, there's an emergence of deadly infections caused by Vibrio vulnificus bacteria, CBS News reported quoting officials.

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mentioned that Vibrio vulnificus can cause life-threatening wound infections. There are several instances when people needed intensive care or limb amputations. The report also mentioned that about 1 in 5 people with this infection die.

Earlier this month, the Lee County health department said in a news release that the infection itself "has the potential to cause severe illness or death."

According to state data updated last Friday, at least 29 cases and four deaths have been confirmed in Lee County this year as a result of such infections. At least two cases have been reported after Hurricane Ian.

A spokesperson at the county health department said in a statement to CBS News on Monday: "The Florida Department of Health in Lee County is observing an abnormal increase in cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections as a result of exposure to the flood waters and standing waters following Hurricane Ian."

The statement mentioned that people should "always be aware of the potential risks associated when exposing open wounds, cuts, or scratches on the skin to warm, brackish, or salt water."

The statement added: "Sewage spills, like those caused from Hurricane Ian, may increase bacteria levels. As the post storm situation evolves, individuals should take precautions against and infection and illness caused by Vibrio vulnificus."

The world is eagerly counting down to the start of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. With millions of fans making their way to Qatar, many should also consider neighbouring Saudi Arabia as their destination instead. Saudi has already announced that it will allow multi-entry visas for the holders of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Hayya Card. Tourists who have gained their visa with the Hayya card can make their way to Saudi Arabia for up to 90-days in the country, starting 10-days before the tournament begins. The e-visa is also available for tourists from 49 eligible countries. Tourists can catch all their favourite matches in Qatar while staying in the comfort of the neighbouring country, as the Qatari capital Doha is only a 90-minute flight from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Popular destinations in Saudi for tourists include the capital of Riyadh, where they can stay in luxurious hotels like the Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, the Intercontinental, Fairmont and Shaza; Jeddah, which is fast becoming the hub of Saudi’s burgeoning art and music scene, and AlUla, which is home to Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the capital city of Riyadh, tourists can make their way to one of the tallest buildings in Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom Center Tower. From the Center Point observatory, tourists can see the sprawling city below. If shopping is in mind, then many malls like the glitzy Al Nakheel Mall, the elegant Riyadh Gallery Mall and the sprawling Hayat Mall can fulfil those needs. Cultural areas like King Abdullah Park where water and light shows can enthral visitors and the imposing clay-mudbrick Masmak Fortress are the places, which can’t be missed. The National Museum and the stunning Edge of the World are places to visit when trying to enjoy things at a slower pace. Tourists can enjoy a variety of cuisine like authentic Saudi food, traditional Japanese cuisine, Brazilian steakhouses and French-bistro style food at restaurants throughout the city. In the bustling hub of Jeddah, a visit to the Jeddah Corniche against the sea, also known as the Jeddah Waterfront, is a must for all visitors. A visit to the Fakieh Aquarium will introduce tourists to a variety of aquatic species. For shopping, Jeddah offers a throwback to the past with traditional markets like that in Al Balad and Gabel Street Souq, and modern shopping centres like the Mall of Arabia and Al Salam Mall. A trip to the city, however, won’t be complete without a visit to Nasseef House and Al Tayebat International City. The cuisine in Jeddah is vibrant with world-class seafood being served at almost every restaurant. Saudi Arabia will also be hosting a series of events during the World Cup, including music festivals, film festivals, sports festivals and more. MDLBeast, the biggest music festival ever seen in the Middle East, will coincide with the FIFA World Cup. The country has also prepared to host the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah. Tourists can also make their way to the annual entertainment and sports festival, Riyadh Season in the capital. However, if tourists are looking for cultural programmes instead then they can make their way to the Winter at Tantoura cultural festival in AlUla. All of these festivals and events will be taking place at the same time as the World Cup, giving tourists plenty of opportunities to enjoy other activities than just football during lulls between the matches. Increased Number of Flights from Qatar Travelling from Saudi Arabia to Qatar has never been easier for travellers wanting to explore the authentic home of Arabia. The country has increased the number of shuttle flights to 60 daily flights on the Saudi team’s match day and to 40 daily flights on other days during the FIFA World Cup. The flights will be taking off from both Jeddah and Riyadh. Saudi adventures await World Cup fans from around the world

A princess who speaks to angels and a self-proclaimed shaman who sells pricey healing medallions: the unusual couple are madly in love but struggling to win hearts in Norway.

Martha Louise, the divorced 51-year-old daughter of Norway's king and queen, has rebuilt her life with Durek Verrett, a popular Hollywood spiritual guru.

The princess and Shaman Durek, as he is known to his star followers such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Antonio Banderas, announced their engagement in June, with King Harald's blessing.

But the romance has not gone down well in Norway because the African-American "sixth generation shaman" suggested cancer is a choice in his book "Spirit Hacking".

He has also recommended exercises to remove "imprints" from women's vaginas left by previous sexual partners.

And on his website, he sells a medallion -- for $222 -- dubbed a "Spirit Optimizer" which he claims helped him overcome Covid.

All of which has raised eyebrows in no-nonsense Norway.

"He's an imposter, a charlatan and a crook," according to columnist and humourist Dagfinn Nordbo.

Racism?

A poll last month found 17 percent of Norwegians now have a lower opinion of the royal family, nearly all citing the princess and the shaman as the reason.

The criticism comes amid debate over the role of monarchy in many European countries, with several royal houses announcing moves to slim down and modernise.

Denmark and Sweden have cut back their households, and Britain is reportedly considering the same under King Charles.

Norway's monarchy has long enjoyed broad support, due largely to its down-to-earth ways, with 85-year-old King Harald -- who married a commoner -- known for adopting the country's progressive values.

While Verrett has said he understands his beliefs may be unsettling for some, he claims he is a victim of racism -- echoing fellow African-American Meghan Markle complaints since she joined Britain's royal family.

"White people write all this hate and death threats to us and all this stuff for being together because... they don't want to see a black man in the royal family," he said in a video posted to Instagram on June 9.

Martha Louise said she was "really shocked" to see how he and "black people and people of colour get treated."

Oslo's former mayor, Fabian Stang, is one of the few to have spoken out in support of the couple.

"Selling medallions to bring good health is going too far... but it's strange that so many of those who hate Durek had nothing against the Snasa man," he wrote on Facebook in a reference to a famous Norwegian faith healer who died last year.

"In 2022, should we not be able to welcome Durek with open arms and invite him to a serious debate on the line between science and hoax?"

Still, more than half of Norwegians want Martha Louise to renounce her title of princess, recent polls show.

Several groups of healthcare professionals have also dropped the princess as a patron because of her fiance's penchant for alternative medicine.

'Culture clash'

This is not the first time Martha Louise, fourth in the line of succession behind her younger brother Crown Prince Haakon and his two children, has courted controversy.

A fan of alternative therapies, she claims to be able to speak with angels, a gift she has shared -- and profited from -- in books and courses.

She lost her honorific "Her Royal Highness" in 2002 when she withdrew from royal duties to be a clairvoyant, and in 2019 she agreed not to use her princess title in her commercial endeavours.

Her first husband, the flamboyant writer Ari Behn, with whom she has three daughters, also made waves.

He committed suicide in 2019, three years after their divorce.

This time the eccentricities displayed by the princess and Shaman Durek appear to be too much for normally phlegmatic Norwegians.

"The royal family is meant to be a unifying force. The problem is that Martha Louise and Durek Verrett are exactly the opposite: controversial and polarising with suspicions of charlatanism," said historian Trond Noren Isaksen.

"Most Norwegians despise the fact that you can make money off of what they consider to be nonsense that comes with the stamp of approval from a princess."

According to celebrity magazines, King Harald, Martha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon have held "crisis meetings" to discuss whether the princess can retain her title.

So far the king has said very little about his future son-in-law, referring only to a "culture clash".

"Something has to be done," Noren Isaksen insisted.

"The royal couple have to reconcile two priorities -- of parents who want to see their children live happy lives... and protecting the crown so that it will continue to shine brightly for another thousand years."
